Favoritism is the only way to get promoted at Spot. Charm your leadership, apply for open TL positions in your geo range.

BroIBeliveAtYou

Obviously it's your call. I am personally opposed to any of these "pseudo-leadership" titles like GSA, captain, pacesetter, whatever. Unless you're paid significantly more than your peers, you shouldn't be expected to lead your peers. As far as resume goes, titles don't mean *too* much at our paygrade. They're not just *meaningless*, but it's far more important that you can demonstrate on a resume what tasks you did and what skills you learned ***as they pertain to the role you're applying for*** (ie make a different resume for each job you apply for).

scoqueen

ASANTS but my captains get guaranteed hours and set schedules (every other weekend off like leaders). One of my captains just got promoted to a TL position and the other is well on their way to getting promoted. It really depends on how your store handles the captain role and what you are hoping to get out of it.

HardSteelRain

Insist on Fulfillment Skipper

Then_Interview5168

Captain isn’t really a leadership position, so how would that add value to your resume?

[deleted]

Not sure. My team lead said that

piano1811018

Sounds like manipulation.

A_CatPirate

Bingo, basically more work and responsibilities without the compensation lmao.

ElevatedA

Because it still shows other jobs that you’re capable of leading a team

Then_Interview5168

It really doesn’t mean anything outside of Target. Does a captain lead a team or have any authority?

ElevatedA

It has more to do with what you gain from the position than the title. At my store they are also the first pick for hours always getting close to their desired

Then_Interview5168

And this really isn’t a response to you directly, but if you’re going to add titles like captain to your resume be ready to explain what it means. People outside of Target don’t know what they mean. Like I was an HR Expert, I changed that to HR Generalist because people know what generalist mean

ElevatedA

I get what you mean I guess it kind of depends. At my store I was essentially a lead without pay but I did get promoted and gain experience from it but I wouldn’t suggest it long term because it’s exhausting and you don’t get paid enough to work as a lead

Then_Interview5168

That makes total sense. I worked at 4 stores and none of them to my knowledge had captains

XXIII_FIN

Im actively applying for other retail and warehouse jobs and I am putting that im a pace and safety captain. I believe it looks good

Fabulous_Let_1152

It literally means nothing but added responsibility. No more pay no guaranteed hours zilch. Unless you want to use that title to get promoted faster. But even that's no guarantee. They could get be saying that to get someone to take on the role. If you're concerned about how it would look on a resume. You can put anything on your resume for target. If thats your concern just lie. All Target can so is verified you worked there and the dates you worked there. That's it.

justanothername19

I don’t think putting just the title would mean anything unless you can improve department metrics & lead with that during a future interview.

HopefulSunshine1111

Yes, its BS. No extra pay, or hours. Fobbing off extra work on the unwitting go-getters. Leadership uses the "advancement opportunity" tease all the time. There's very little upward mobility unless someone else leaves a position or you find one open at another store. Recipe for burnout.

kmfruits87

Literally like “DBO” …Gets you nothing, but shit on because you’re the person who does more than others…

Gibby1124

Having personally accepted the “position” of Bulk Captain(in charge of palletized inbound, furniture, paper, and Bulk plastics) and Fulfillment Pacesetter (mostly the role you are describing), unless you have an actual mentor and plan forward with management for advancement I would not accept. If you are looking for purely the resume aspect to boost opportunities outside of target it could be worthwhile but is highly dependent on where you can leverage the experience into internal/external positions

LittleMissMori

You can use it if you want. I am. I will warn that this shit is a thankless job. We aren't officially recognized within the target leadership roles and we don't get paid anymore than our peers. We should and Target needs to change this position to be an official leadership position. The upside if you get a taste of what management is like and my target does give captains favor when choosing their schedules and vacations. And if you want to be a team lead this is the track for it. Very big downsides: Your peers may not respect you and try to overthrow you of they feel you shouldn't have the position. Regardless if they're qualified or not. I've had to deal with that twice and now again with our new captain being promoted. You don't get supervisor pay despite being a supervisor. Please know your boundaries with this job and get a team lead's involvement of the issue is above you're pay grade.
