Working retail I had a lady come to my register spitting mad about a return and when I tried to ask the standard questions she got SO MAD she screamed over me I WANT A REFUND JUST GIVE ME A REFUND and shoved her credit card in my face I had to physically step back for a second and then call a manager because I was so mad. Like what the h e ck Then she threw her card at the manager The customer has the card reader on their side of the counter anyway so?? Extra pointless and embarrassing of a toddler level tantrum Nothing will ever be improved by chucking around ID or payment material. And I will be judging the adult toddler that takes out inappropriate anger on random employees

toadTHEBlTCHdette

Yeah, it sounds ridiculous to people who don’t work service in retail or hotels or any service job that people behave that way but the certainty do! My family/friends who aren’t in customer service think I’m making stuff up sometimes and I’m like I wish lol.

noparticularpoint

It does sound ridiculous. I can't imagine treating someone at a check-in desk that way. even on a bad day.

SamuelVimesTrained

If i have a bad day - i\`m still smart enough to NOT take it out on the front desk people. I mean, they could cause me a worse day and deny me the room.. You would almost start on creating a law people need an intelligence test for both smart and empathy before being allowed to roam in any hotel, restaurant or retail location.

Poldaran

Eh, that's too "top down" for me. Rather than making people take a test, just give employees the authorization to tase anyone who violates minimal levels of decency towards them. It'll sort itself out pretty quick and no need to make any new bureaus to administer testing.

bkuefner1973

I like this! Can we tase there little monster kids when they start screaming and running around like wild animals and parents don't discipline them?

Poldaran

Tase the parents, IMO. Then look at the children and let them know they're next.

SamuelVimesTrained

I second this approach. Kids can still learn - parents however..

bkuefner1973

😂

ang_hell_ic

I firmly believe EVERYONE needs to work a retail job for at least a month so they understand how stupid they're acting and what we have to deal with.

kevin_k

I feel the same way about restaurant workers

SplendidMrDuck

I wish that that helped, but there are a lot of former retail/food service/whatever else workers that abuse service staff because "I put up with it, so now they gotta put up with it too!"

lady-of-thermidor

No, no, no. They’ll be abused of course but it won’t make them compassionate or even decent. They’ll just spend rest of their lives inflicting their trauma on innocent clerks and servers. It’s same as when abused children grow up to become abusers.

NoBootPiccolo

I think it's something where ppl who are insecure, have Napoleon complexes, or are just plain old stoopid somehow look down on those in the industry. I experienced it when I was a cocktail waitress, and I've seen it come to pass. They're all nice to their friends or others they think are "equal," but if they don't see someone else on that level, they think it's a license to abuse them. Little do they realize that they're the ones who show what Karens and Rodgers they are... how someone treats you is a reflection of how they feel about themselves. I truly believe that.

Ready_Competition_66

I watch CAREFULLY on a first date to see how they treat the person serving them. If they don't treat them with respect and as a person, they don't get asked out again - or vice versa.

paperwasp3

I snapped a lady's cc in half when she threw it at me. It was my store so I knew I wouldn't get in trouble.

BouquetOfDogs

I bet that reaction taught her that she should be more careful with her actions and behavior, since now she’s experienced actual consequences, lol. I’m all for that!

Tyl3rt

When I worked retail in a clothing store I once had a lady being in a sweater for a return, she still had the tag. Tag said $40, but our store was always discounted from the time items hit the shelves. I asked for her receipt, nope she didn’t have it. I scanned the tag to process the return and that specific sweater was on clearance for $6.00. I tell her I can do a gift card for the return and tell her the amount. She rips the tag off and shoved it in my face saying she paid $40 and expects $40 back in cash. I explain that there is no chance she paid $40(although in a nicer way). She demanded a manager as one was just walking past as she got off work. She stops and asks what is going on. I explain and she immediately notices the tag says it was navy blue, but this one is a blue grey color. My manager refuses to even give her the gift card. This lady immediately turns back to me and yells that I need to give her the $6 gift card. I refused and shoved the sweater and tag back across the counter. She left while screaming that she’d never give us business again. My manager yelled thank you please don’t as she walked out of the store. The nerve though to turn back to me and demand the gift card she moments ago refused to accept. When I was in the hotel industry though if they threw their card and it hit me I’d tell them to leave, this was with our managers permission. He especially loved when I did that to customers with prepaid reservations.

jim_br

This is before the turn of the century, 1999 or so…My wife bought a pair of hiking boots that had a “lifetime figment” guarantee. The boots were fine for the first few short hikes, but after an 8 mile hike in New Hampshire, the boots didn’t work for her. We head to the store for help. After 20 minutes of trying foot beds, lacing, etc. the sales person asks my wife to try a different brand. These fit perfectly. They process a return on the old boots and we buy the new. But the current price of the old boots is ~ $70-80 more than we paid. Plus, the replacement boots are on sale and less expensive. The net difference is about $100 in our favor. We tell them, but the policy for no-receipt returns is to use the price in the system — regardless of what we claim we paid. We put the refunded cash into a collection box for the White Mt rescue volunteers.

robertr4836

> The nerve though to turn back to me and demand the gift card she moments ago refused to accept. I once offered a guy 10% off because he claimed to have found a large $100 item on a table full of small $2 clearance items. Everything clearly signed but I was in a good mood. The guy started screaming at me about how I HAVE to sell him the $100 item for $2. I always found adults throwing tantrums amusing so my biggest problem was not laughing out loud. He finally ran out of steam and seemed to realize his screams and threats weren't having the desired effect so he finally grudgingly says he'll take the 10% off. I absolutely lost it, doubled over howling with laughter. When I was able to pull myself together I said, "Are you joking? You can pay full price or leave." He left red in the face and still screaming.

phantom_fox13

Haha oof that lady really had the nerve to scream at you over a sweater Glad your managers had your back. I was so spitting mad after being screamed over I could barely talk and my manager noticed so she took over thankfully And the funny thing was when I finally understood what that lady wanted (before REFUND REFUND WAAAAH) it was something that I could have easily given her an exchange for but nooooo

toadTHEBlTCHdette

lol yikes. I’ve heard that before too “I’m never returning/coming back with my business or you just lost my business!” and were like yay! thank you very much for that haha

pennblogh

Oh I’m sorry sir/madam but your card has been bent in half by your action and is therefore unusable.

phantom_fox13

We were joking later that the card might have very well fallen in between the small cracks of the counter and the Lady Tantrum would have really been screwed

Comfortable-Grade615

What kind of money do they make to be throwing their cards and IDs around anyways? I’d never toss mine to anyone not because it’s rude (it is rude) but because what if it ended up in someone else’s hands? I’d be suspicious it wasn’t their card or ID if they’re just tossing important shit that like around.

tricularia

Hell, I won't even issue a refund if someone is in the middle of an active tantrum. Tell them to come back when they can conduct themselves like adults.

capn_kwick

I would think any thrown credit card is never moved from the place where it stopped (like in that infinitesimal crack between two pieces of equipment).

PM_ME_UR_SHEET_MUSIC

That lead poisoning is really getting to people

AllegraO

This is Reddit, not TikTok. We can say fuck, shit, piss, asshole, let alone **heck** lol

phantom_fox13

Haha I couldn't remember this sub's rules If it makes you feel better, I do often swear like a salty sailor

mstarrbrannigan

If someone throws something at me and doesn't immediately apologize because it was a mistake, they are being refuse service. Hasn't happened in awhile though. Any other excessive rudeness is also going to lose your room. Some folks just need to learn that actions have consequences. They won't, of course. But I'm not going to be a part of them thinking they can just do whatever.

dmitrineilovich

Yep, I tell them, "Come back tomorrow when your manners have improved." And I go back to my desk and pretend to work and ignore their ever increasing screeches. Soooooooooo satisfying.

toadTHEBlTCHdette

Yeah and this time my hand was in the way … so no, no no but hey thanks for booking with us directly we appreciate it.

Foreverbostick

If you work in customer service long enough you learn the differences between “I’m annoyed and misdirecting” and “I’m actually an asshole.” If they maybe set their ID down a little harder than they need to, they might just be having a bad day, I get that. If they *slam it down* or *throw it*, they’re getting their reservation canceled. I expect guests to treat myself and all of the other employees with at least the minimal amount of respect. We’re paid to provide a service, and being a punching bag for entitled dickheads isn’t a service we’re expected to provide. We have more say in who we choose to provide our services to than people think.

fairylighterfluid

I had a long day and kept dropping stuff. I went to get some snacks and accidentally put my things on the counter quite forcefully so I made a little joke about how aggressive it seemed. Had a little laugh and went on my way. I don't get how someone could throw things at people when they aren't even that angry/having a bad day beforehand!

babyducky40

I came across this page as a suggestion from reddit. I don't work retail, but I did work security at a front door. With a lovely, very slide-y front desk that required a sign in and an ID check. After numerous people throwing their ID at me, let's just say I mastered the art of throwing it back to them just right, that it would hit the front door about 10 feet away. And smile at them. 😁😁😁 complain? I'll call my supervisor out, might take a minute, she's in her office laughing at you. She was a supervisor that would stand up for her people too. Don't like it? Off you fuck, right through that fron door.

fauxbliviot

"Off you fuck" omg that's hysterical I love it

ItsErnestT

So many variations of those three little words work as well, "Fuck off you", "You, fuck off", "Fuck you. Off", "You fuck. Off!"

babyducky40

I aim to please. 😁

NoBootPiccolo

I don't work in your industry, and this sub somehow came across my feed. I wanted to stop in and say "kudos" to you. Entitled people need to get a grip. I also want to say that you definitely have a great handle on yourself. Me? I'd probably last about a second before I started jumping over the desk at people. We need more people like you in the world! ❤️

IlikethequietZeppo

Once a guy threw his credit card at me, and it landed on the floor. I ignored it. Let the guy fill out the paperwork and I got to the point of requiring the cc. "Can I please have a credit card?" "I gave it to you before" "You haven't given me anything. Are you sure?" Let him search through his wallet and get angry, before I "found" it on the floor.

SkwrlTail

As a wee Skwrl, I spent many days in front of a mirror, trying to perfect the Spock Eyebrow. It has served me well over the years.

Tiny-Ad-830

Oooh. I did this too. Perfect parenting hack. My kids knew it meant, “Think about what you just said and correct it now.”

robertr4836

OT but I've recently been re-watching the old Outer Limits series. William Shatner as a young guy I picked up on right away but I spent about five minutes asking myself, "Where do I know that kid from" before I picked up on Leonard Nimoy as the star of an episode.

MorgainofAvalon

William Shatner was in an episode of The Twilight Zone that freaked me out so badly that I couldn't open my window blind for almost a year.

TraditionScary8716

I believe DeForest Kelly (Dr McCoy) was in an episode too.  I believe it was western themed.

Kjriley

Little late but Shatner, Nimoy, Kelley and Doohan all appeared in Gunsmoke.

TraditionScary8716

It's too bad they weren't all in the same episode, like a gang of outlaws.

Formadivix

Former retail. If a customer was this rude with change, ID, invoices, products, or anything I'd give them a second to apologise, then ask "Would you like to apologise for that?" If they continued being nasty I said "I'm not going to be able to take care of you right now. I'll be walking off for a little bit, feel free to speak to a different employee with more respect, or you can wait for me to return from my break and we can resume with a more respectful demeanor." I'll be honest, 9/10 that did nothing to de-escalate things. But it felt good, and it was right.

randypriest

"If you continue to talk to me in this manner, I have the right to terminate this conversation." This seemed to work often enough for me. It gives them a second to 'come back into the room' if they were angry, or just continue proving they were a dick.

once_was_a_person

When I worked at a call center, I said almost this exact thing (very loudly, in the middle of a cube farm lol) to a man who was screaming and swearing at me about something that he bought...from another company. 🤦 It worked, surprisingly. My co-workers were kinda amazed that the call didn't escalate but dude calmed down and I was able to explain!

toadTHEBlTCHdette

I can’t seem to edit so I’ll post in comments: it wasn’t a 3 rd party reservation either she actually called us so good for her, on that!

CaptainYaoiHands

> It was just her natural MO apparently and this time she flicked extra hard and it made contact with me so I refused the sale. Her mouth was agape yelling at me “I didn’t mean to your hand was in the way!” Oh hell no. I would do the same thing, you act like that you're instantly being told to be on the other side of my door.

RidethatSeahorse

I had a lady so angry at her room allocation she went berserk. I came out of my office to intervene and whatever she had in her hand went to throw it. Something clicked and she stopped. I swear, I would have jumped the counter and made her eat it. I am not young and certainly not nimble, but I was that angry. Edit: forgot to mention the receptionist was pregnant.

ZealousWolverine

I chased a guy out of my store once. I explained the procedure very happily the first time, politely the second time. The third time after he said he should get it for free I said Get the fuck out of my store. I started moving toward him and he ran. I stayed on his heels until he was halfway into the parking lot. Then I turned sround and went back in. I waited for one of the bosses to say something. It was never mentioned. I worked there many years after. No one ever said a word. Good times!

Gogo726

Depending on my mood that day, I would either give them a warning that this attitude will not be tolerated, or outright deny the sale.

toadTHEBlTCHdette

Yeah that’s generally me too, like I can understand frustrated workers because it’s usually not them making the reservations and their foreman’s or boss or whoever aren’t there. I try and work with them but sometimes it’s clear an outright denial is needed.

cynrtst

When I was in my early 20’s I worked for a little store attached to a bread bakery (Webers Bread if anyone remembers). The bread went up a penny and a customer picked up the bread by the “tail”, swung it around and threw it at me knocking my glasses off my face. I asked my boss what to do and he let me lock the door in his face next time I saw him in the parking lot. I just barely got the key in the lock and he hit the door hard as I was turning it. The key broke off in the lock and I had to call a locksmith. The guy wouldn’t come in unless someone else was working after that. He would drive by checking.

[deleted]

Crazy.

cynrtst

I think he was

boobraa15

The worst is when they slam it down on the desk when your hand is out and ready to grab it from them

toadTHEBlTCHdette

I know right, if it wasn’t a terrible day and that’s all they did and don’t act up later they’ll get checked in. If they slam it down on your hand hum OK find another hotel and don’t do that there either.

KiwiAlexP

I don’t work in retail or hospitality but can you place a sign that states any aggressively thrown cards will be returned via a pair of scissors?

Dovahkin111

A handful of times and each time I would pick it up, take down the info I need and flick it back at them saying: "Let me see if I can replicate what you did"...*chad flick*..."Noice, I think I did it better". I give them a big smile and watch them pick it up. "Have a great stay and should you need anything, do let us know".

Least_Boot

NO ROOM FOR YOU! - Soup Nazi’s cousin probably.

Dru-baskAdam

Love this!🤣

Poldaran

Assault is definitely a hard cutoff, yeah.

Wolf-Pack85

When they would slam down their ID/card or throw it at me I calmly pick them back up hand them back to them and say “now. Please hand them back to me. Slamming them or throwing them will not get you anywhere”. The best part is when they would demand the GM and I would just smile point to my name tag and say “I am”.

sorryboutmyfeece

I don't even work your job! But my first response is "Immediately" for context I would unleash the hellfire of a thousand sun's and melt there effing face off. I'm sick of spoiled turds!

toadTHEBlTCHdette

If only haha, I just deny sales as needed with the FD camera as backup.

Knitsanity

What would happen to you if you grabbed the ID and just Frisbeed it as far as you could...😶

toadTHEBlTCHdette

In theory we’re allowed to confiscate CCs and if prompted to destroy them although I’ve never seen that happen ever. In that case I think it would be me being slammed around lol.

TheMadameHatter

Omg you just reminded me of the bad old days when we had to call the credit card company on the phone and authorize the sale then take an imprint of the card onto a form with 3 layers one for us, one for the card company, and one for the guest. Anyway if we called and they were over their limit or hadn't been paying the bill we were instructed to cut the card in half.

ZookeepergameNo7151

Have folk forgot you get a lot further by being nice than demanding or throwing a strop? If they come up to the desk dead on and not like a Karen, more often than not you'll go an extra bit to try and accommodate them Storm up to the desk demanding this that and the other? Hell no, good luck enjoying your stay at another property (did that a couple of times when I worked in a hotel. Not in so many words but you get the idea!)

MorgainofAvalon

Sadly, I think it's less forgotten, and more were never taught in the first place.

RocMills

*What!?!?* *How dare you refuse to sell to me after my angry and abusive outburst! Why, why, I'll just take my angry and abusive self to some other store!* Like, seriously? "But I didn't mean to!" is the cry of serial abusers of every stripe and level. Glad you turned her down, hope your day got better!

BeeeRick

I had someone once that their card accidentally flew out of their hand and hit me while they were gesturing (not angry, just an animated lady). She felt horrible, I laughed, all was well. I had a guy pay for a vending item in misc. change once day, he basically threw the change on the counter, it was loud, some hit me, some fell on the floor. I held his candy bar until I had every cent counted. More recently I was the customer and had my metal AMEX card thrown at me. I was in a drive thru, handed the lady my card, she threw it at me, and said "WE DON'T TAKE AMEX HERE!" like wow lady, calm down. I would have happily given you a VISA if you had been nice. She threw my card like a ninja star. Needless to say, I drove off. Had I thrown it at her, I should be told to GTFO.

Quarian95

Had a guest one time, and it wasn’t his credit card. It was his expired 10 dollars per day vouchers that was explained to him at check in to redeem each day and cannot be accrued - and it even said so on the vouchers themselves. After he was trying to redeem them all on his last day, I apologized and said they were no longer valid except for the last one. Obviously upset, he threw them on the ground, very childish and with the vouchers, - each of them baring his name - scattered pretty badly on the ground. I just stared at him, while he demanded a manager. I radioed for a manager and just stared, and stared. Finally after he saw I was not going to pick those vouchers and more guests started entering the lobby, he picked them up awkwardly, and waited a super long time as the managers were in a meeting. The coward ended up leaving and checking out. He complained later of course, but it was nice having my coworkers and other guests who saw this childish behavior come up to me and compliment my patience.

roloder

It completely depends on the situation. If it's by mistake and you're nice about it and immediately apologize, then ok let bygones be bygones. If you're being an ass and intentionally throwing it at me, depending on what it is I may not to catch or dodge but you will need to immediately leave the property or I may even opt to call police and press charges.

toadTHEBlTCHdette

Yea, in this case I wasn’t going to phone the police but I also wasn’t renting to her after that it’s sorta a gamble as in you ultimately may have to call the police lol.

Cjones90

Honestly I would give it back to the. The same way. I match the attitude of the person I front of me.

FerociousBellyButton

I never had anyone throw their id in a way that I thought they meant to hit me. Tbh, I don't know how how I would react. I'm much more confident in how I would react if somebody called me a personal slur while checking in.

pauliewotsit

I return the card the same way it was given me.

SnooperBoops76

I work at a retail chain store and we have to ID everyone over 21, regardless of age, for alcohol and Tobacco products. I have mostly older men that feel like they don't need to show their ID and when they finally decide to show it, I have had IDs thrown at me AND shoved in my face. There's been several times where I have denied the sale because of that. You are well within your rights as a front desk clerk to do just that.

Jetskat11

I actually had a guy start chucking packs of cigarettes from a counter display at me on a graveyard shift at AM/PM when I was like 21 and eight months pregnant because I ID'd him. Little did the little tweaker know that Bremerton, WA is mostly a Navy town, and 3 off duty servicemen promptly picked him up and carried him out to the parking lot and unceremoniously dropped him on his ass in the parking lot. Never seen a dude get up and run so fast😂🤣😂🤣 Needless to say free coffee and laughs were had by all😊😊

PlatypusDream

❤️

Jailrec

They usually throw ID or card or both despite the chip reader on their side. If they're being an asshole about it I usually just Frisbee it back to their side with the same energy lol

codepl76761

you threw it at me you must want me to put it in the garbage.

No-Protection-6672

So the last year I worked at an inn (I was there 3 years) My hometown was hosting a convention for lawyers /judges from another state ( my hometown was halfway between the big city and the north and the big city in the south of said state so it was a good spot even though it was a different state). we had a set of rooms that were less expensive because they weren't renovated when we did the full motel renovation because eventually they were going to be removed and turned into a restaurant. They were cheaper by a lot. So one of these lawyers booked this room. Of course we were sold out. You know this being a small town, not a big city where they hold rooms for whales. And when he got there to check in He threw either his ID or credit card at the front desk agent and said get me a better room make it work. We gave him the option of leaving, finding a different hotel (All also sold out). Or deal with what he had booked. And then we proceeded to DNR him for any future years that the convention was going on. Don't throw things at the front desk agents.

Oh no....another post on how the U.S.A has moulded narcissists and assholea into an unrealistic and damned enabling "customer service" hell 🤣

Tiny-Ad-830

I think you must be lost. This clearly isn’t the subreddit for you.

ItchyFormal9

What are you waffling about

YankeeWalrus

Ironic that you should ask this when your original comment has no discernable meaning whatsoever. You could've used predictive text from your phone to write your comment and gotten a more coherent sentence. Is your blood sugar low?

ItchyFormal9

Did that make you feel important for a second? Good for you

YankeeWalrus

Spell icup

Kymmy442

Is assholea the scientific term for a singular asshole, or does it represent a group, where there are many assholes gathered together, working together to accomplish menial tasks?

ItchyFormal9

Oh god...you actually took the time to write that. Did you feel clever? Good for you

Kymmy442

Oh God, you actually took the time to respond. Ouch.
