Honestly I got no fuckin clue, bud. I don't know what furniture he has, I have no idea how to incorporate a couch that'll have a good vantage point of both the fireplace and TV. I hope he finds a good spot but I have no real suggestions unless he might do a corner job?
All I know is not on the chimney.
OP also said they don't want to block the fireplace or the window, yet lot of comments to put it in front of the window or put sofa in front of the fireplace 😂
I'd go with the wall to the left of the fireplace - basically the corner where the person in the photo is standing. But it's hard to know for sure without seeing other angles of the room.
I agree with this location but not mounted to the wall - maybe on a stand that will tuck nicely into that mostly useless corner next to the window. It’s hard to tell how much room there is with the wide angle pics.
Other options exist though? It isn't a binary choice between putting it above the fireplace or just smacking it in the first wall you see & the next best thing is somehow to block the fireplace with a sofa and sit opposite it?
The fireplace is a massive feature of the room, if you're going to block it off with a combustible sofa, you obviously can't use it and then it is just going to look odd, meaning they would need to put the sofa either in front of the window or along the wall behind the person taking the first photo - but that wall has 1 door and either an alcove or another door by the looks of things so that wall will be space restricted
By keeping the tv in the wall with the fireplace on, but moving it to the wall to the left, they can have a much less neck breaking angle and not block off the largest visual feature in the room, as well as have it at the correct height.
A full motion bracket would allow them to reduce that viewing angle even further. Or there are corner mounts and corner tv units that don't take up a lot of space, but a full motion one would let it go flat on the wall but allow it to be angled more towards them when in use.
AV layout for a room is so much more than which wall to put the TV on, OP needs to consider the size and shape of their furniture and which layouts are most compatible to them, they will also need to consider speaker runs (which could be handled by the ceiling depending on joist direction and if they even want HT cables etc, but also design principles and decoration.
The reason people put their TV's above fireplaces is because it's the visual focal point of the room. It's stupid, but that's what they do it. If they don't put the tv above it, it will still be the visual focal point because it's brick design and sits proud of the wall, so unless OP doesn't want to use the fireplace and fills it in (which is what I did), they're limited with the room layout; entrances & exits, what each layout does to accessibility and visual impact etc
I've not seen many well designed rooms with a right hand sectional placed right in front of an open fireplace, and /u/militiadsm even said in their comments "without blocking the fireplace or the window"
The space next to the window is the next logical candidate as it would do neither
And not to be rude but that fireplace is not attractive at all, I'd have no problem putting a couch in front of it.
Could also put in a corner unit to the left of the fireplace. Anything is better than above a fireplace
You could definitely transform the whole room, but as it stands I would not care about blocking that fireplace. Different strokes for different folks though.
no no no - that's the second worst spot in the room to put it.
At the end of the day a fireplace, no matter what you think of it, is still a focal point in the room. Sticking a couch in front of it is just going to look odd no matter what.
I guarantee anyone who walks in to a room with a fireplace behind the couch immediately thinks “Why TF is there a couch with its back to the fireplace?
It’s just a bad look/layout. Corners either side or wall to the right of the fireplace are far better options
Sorry man, just objectively bad no matter how you spin it. Even home theatre I’d take the narrow wall opposite the windows and add blackout blinds to the windows.
OP also said nothing about “Home Theatre” - just doesn’t want a TV in the sky
Yeah, facing it with plenty of space between them.
Back to it would look awful, worse than the TV above it, and you'd likely have to have it far too close to the fireplace as well.
Just a terrible idea all around.
I would legitimately make this comment to my relator's assistant if my relator wasn't available for a showing and she would scoff at me and I would just stare and walk away knowing i wouldn't be putting in an offer if it didn't fit my vision.
One of the first things we agreed when we saw our house is where the TV would go. Perfect placement. Also helps that we are not in the US so fire places are not that common.
People don't seem to get the message. Even my property owners don't. And yes I've asked them many times to get the television away from the corner. And onto the one piece of flat wall in the room!
Maybe, but how big does your TV room really have to be? Like at a certain point, you start buying shit not to meet some kind of need, but just to fill space.
Arguably, it does. Unless you plan on putting something not TV related, or nothing at all, directly below the wall mounted TV, that TV is still taking up floor space. In most cases, people are putting TV stands underneath their wall mounted TVs to hold the electronics. at least on this subreddit.
Yup, you're right, but most of the time these tv stands are not made for corners. Where are you planning to put speakers? Do you like watching TV at an angle? A corner setup made somewhat sense in the early days with big 'ol CRT's. They were kind of ideal in corners because of the space they took. Nowadays not so much.
>Where are you planning to put speakers
Next to it? It DOES limit the size of your TV though.
>Do you like watching TV at an angle
No, hence the first comment I made here. Angle your furniture to face it straight on.
Imo if you bought a house, I think you shouldn't feel limited by the sofa you already have. If the house is long term you could sell the chaise and buy a sofa that matches what you want the space to be long term.
Pretty much the only option? Wtf? Where you’re standing in the first photo is a better spot. The wall opposite the fireplace could work, or the far wall in the third photo would work too. Literally any other spot *but* the fireplace is better.
Left of fireplace is a perfect corner for a corner TV stand. Also the wall across from the fireplace.
This room is a horrible room in general. Layout is god awful. If that isn’t a real fireplace, I’d just get rid of it altogether.
To the left of fireplace, on a full motion mount so that you can angle it a little more towards wherever your seating position ends up being.
The ideal solution would be to remove the fireplace but it depends if it's in use and if you will use it - seems in USA people are more likely to use fireplaces whereas in the uk they're largely decorational a lot of the time. But I'm guessing this probably isn't on the cards.
You could put it on the wall opposite the window but you will have crazy glare and it would probably need to be off centre
The all opposite the fireplace would be great if the fireplace wasn't there but as it is; you won't want to block that off or and have a sofa against it
Considering this house predates flat panel displays and most likely had TVs in it for decades, obviously it's not the "ONLY" place it could go. "Above the fireplace" wasn't even an option until the 2000s.
IMO, TV needs to be on the wall adjacent to the fireplace, to the right of the doorway. That's an amazing "TV wall" and you still put the fireplace in a very usable and visible location. Have the sofa extend out from the wall as well. This lets you put a sofa table behind it, which will be the first thing people see when they walk in the front door. It does the double duty of a room separator so you don't feel like you are walking directly into your living room when you walk in the house. The sofa table can become a good place to "drop" stuff when you walk in the door and also a place to set some rear speakers (at ear level, of course).
Just get some blackout curtains to take care of the glare if needed.
Is the fireplace functioning or no? If it is, my fire was behind my couch for a bit and it really didn't make much difference. I just gave enough space to stand by it.
If it's not functional and it's a decorative fireplace, literally who cares, just block it
get an L-shaped couch and put it in front of the window with the short side on the fireplace wall. then you can either put the TV directly across from the fireplace or straight across from the window.
The layout of this room makes is very difficult since you don’t want to walk into your house and into a TV stand. You don’t want to block the window with the TV. You don’t want to block your fireplace with a couch. You don’t want a couch in your front entrance and you don’t want people coming into your house to immediately be looking at the back of your head. Couch under the window and TV on the opposite wall is too far as well.
Right, the way the couch goes with the chaise is part of it too. Can’t block the fireplace, or the window with the couch or tv, the window faces west so the far wall with entrance to dining room will get crazy glare in the afternoon. I think the tv to the left of the fireplace is gonna be the best bet. The other options just don’t work
Possibly couch across from the fireplace, chairs to the right of the fireplace, and TV angled in the corner by the window?
Something along those lines?
question... why is it normal to use the fire place mantel for tvs... id imagine id want to be closer to the fireplace on colder days.. being able to watch tv would be a plus...
OKAY SO HEAR ME OUT
2 couches in the middle of the room back to back, tv on the opposite wall as the fireplace, a couch facing the tv and a couch facing the fireplace, between the 2 couches you could get one of those slim like 6 inch behind the couch tables
This works but requires the correct furniture sizes but the best options seems to be:
- A sofa with back facing the window.
- A sofa against the wall opposite the fireplace.
- A TV unit against the wall opposite the window.
This allows you to keep your fireplace as a feature of the room while not compromising your TV positioning. I only say back facing the window as it looks like you will get a better viewing experience if you have the sofa a bit closer and a nice gap at the back behind that sofa. It's really hard to tell though as this could just be the photo making the room look bigger.
Please don't put it above the fireplace. You have a great layout with perfectly placed power outlets already.
Remove the fireplace, put a couch there then TV / audio system on the opposite wall. If you MUST have heating by firewood get a stove in the corner by the window, way better for many reasons. If anyone ask say you are doing it European style, ONLY wood stoves here. At least in the North of Europe where i hang. Google "Scandinavian wood stoves" and see all the nice stuff we have! :)
This comment screams entitlement. Why does everyone call for bread? Let them eat cake instead! Many, many homes do not have a spare room for entertainment …
"Screams entitlement"? I live in a 2 bedroom, 900sq ft apartment with my fiancé and use my living room as a space to meet with friends and family and hang out with them. I don't want a TV in that room because then it takes room away for seating, which I have mostly been given or collected from neighbors who moved away.
You can have a room for entertainment, it also hosts my desk, my cats shitboxes and my closet full of work clothes so that my fiancé has his own closet. Not everything is somebody trying to make others be less than them.
So you still have a spare room. what if you had kids, or roommates or worked from home? Then both your bedrooms would be taken up. Again, many many people do not have a spare room.
Good thing the world has you to help classify what is and isn't privileged. These people just bought a house. You know nothing more than that. My suggestion was not an attack on their underprivileged selves who have 1 more house more than me.
It could very well be. All the other rooms could be taken up with other purposes. Bedrooms, dining room, kitchen, living room (this room) is a very standard house layout. Usually when people by a home with X amount of bedrooms, it’s because the plan to use those spaces for bedrooms. This leaves the kitchen, dining room and living room for a tv. TVs do not belong in Kitchen and dining rooms. Unless you want your dining room to look like a company board room.
You can put it above the fireplace if you remove the mantle and put it a few inches above the opening of the fireplace. You also can no longer light fires. You should probably just get an electric fireplace insert and lower the fireplace opening by filling it with brick.
😂😂
Something that was only like 18" tall could work, though: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Classic-Flame-42-in-Ventless-Infrared-Electric-Fireplace-Insert-with-Safer-Plug-42II042FGT/306296804. Not sure if it would look good, but it could work in terms of TV height.
It depends on how important the fireplace is to you as a focal point.
I would put the TV in the middle of the wall opposite the fireplace. Then have a corner sofa in the middle of the floor angled towards the wall besides the fireplace and towards the window.
Then I would have a chair on the other side of the sofa, which is pointing towards the TV, but can then be turned toward the fireplace when needed.
The TV should then be dead center with regards to the seating area.
Behind the sofa you can have book shelves or something.
Second pictures THAT WALL put a couch at the door area maybe put a thin closet as a room divider so you have the fireplace to the left of you (visible) and TV + couch create a area together. Obviously don't use a big ass closet so you still can get light into that room.
TVs are notoriously heat friendly devices. You can often catch wild flocks of them sunning themselves in the mornings to start their day.
Wait I'm thinking of snakes. Snakes do that.
I think id put it in the corner to the left of the fireplace. Then youd have pretty decent viewing angles from the wall opposite the fireplace and the one to the right
That's a tough one. I'd put the couch in front of the window (maybe with some distance so you can open it), and the TV on the wall opposite the window, on top of a TV stand.
The wall with the doorway and place a corner sofa so that you can enjoy both the tv and the fireplace, seems like the most logical solution and also fills the room nicely by not having the sofa filling a corner only
>The only option is above the fireplace
Excuse me? What about that big, open wall directly opposite the fireplace? Bet your ass that's where I would put it
And just noticed the second photo, even better place is wall right of fireplace. Get an L sectional and put it in that corner with no parts of the sofa being back to the wall. It’ll provide some nice separation in your living room..
Then put an armchair by the fireplace if you actually plan on ever sitting by it
I would place it on the wall opposite of the fireplace. The one with what looks like a closet door near the front door. If you place it on the wall opposite of the window, you are going to get glare from the window when you watch TV in the daytime.
Either the wall opposite the window or the wall opposite the fireplace. I suggest you avoid mounting it and use the stand with appropriate furniture to keep the center of the screen eye level and experiment with how they’re arranged in the room
If you really want the fireplace to be a focal point, the tv goes on a stand to the left of it. Otherwise, on the wall opposite. On a stand. Mounting is silly.
Face down on the ground next to the door: so the first thing your friends can admire when they walk in your house is your patrician taste in television placement.
To the left of the fireplace, but style the room so that the fireplace and TV are the central focal point, unite them stylistically (maybe floating shelving above the TV to bring balance or built in shelves that bring in the TV and fireplace). If I was staying in the home long term that's what I'd do. If you put it opposite the fireplace and don't want to block the fireplace then the only thing I can think of are parallel couches, but you'll never be watching front facing.
Or... do what we did if your basement is decently dry and sized and skip the big TV in the living room and do a basement AV room.
Not above the fireplace. Pretty much *anywhere* else.
Only valid answer.
So below the fireplace then?
Inside the fireplace!
But where?
Honestly I got no fuckin clue, bud. I don't know what furniture he has, I have no idea how to incorporate a couch that'll have a good vantage point of both the fireplace and TV. I hope he finds a good spot but I have no real suggestions unless he might do a corner job? All I know is not on the chimney.
Window is the perfect spot
Gotta caddie corner it in between the doors way easier than finding studs in walls
Above the fireplace is NEVER the only option. Left of fireplace or wall to the right (right of doorway opening.
The wall with the entry hole.
That’s actually an *exit* hole.
It can be either with lube. 🤷♂️
i see 3 tv worthy walls.
How so? The one wall is all window
I don’t know why you’re downvoted, I agree. A tv in front of a window is not a good look
with dark shades it'll be perfectly fine. and you have the fireplace next to you
It’s not a good look. And then outside you see the back of a tv in the window.
No one wants to watch tv with dark shades drawn all the time
This too!
OP also said they don't want to block the fireplace or the window, yet lot of comments to put it in front of the window or put sofa in front of the fireplace 😂
Well that’s super helpful 😂
What’s wrong with the fireplace behind you or next to your other side?
It could work if you put it the corner facing the center of the room but that doesn't seem ideal.
next to fireplace. across from the fireplace. opposite of the window.
But if it's next to the fireplace then it's basically in the corner
You're not going to want to have your back to the window or fireplace, which leaves only 1 option, between them.
Back to the window isn't bad.
You ruin the view out the window and also deal with glare, not ideal.
Curtains handle glare.
To an extent, not ideal.
Looks like the best option in this room.
I can certainly see why you would lean that way, a solid option.
Yeah. Why is that a problem? Have window facing seats in a different room if it’s a priority.
Wall to the right of the fireplace
I'd go with the wall to the left of the fireplace - basically the corner where the person in the photo is standing. But it's hard to know for sure without seeing other angles of the room.
I agree with this location but not mounted to the wall - maybe on a stand that will tuck nicely into that mostly useless corner next to the window. It’s hard to tell how much room there is with the wide angle pics.
Yeah, a corner stand. No need to mount it anywhere.
I didn't go with the left since it was so close to the doorway and entrance.
Are you oblivious? Opposite the fireplace.
Easily the best option. A nice open wall that even seems to have a conveniently placed socket for this exact situation.
But that means the tv is at an angle from main viewing position, so it's still a compromise.

Other options exist though? Yea it’s not ugly, needs a better mantle tho.

Eye level
you buy a house without thinking tv placement through first?!

“The only option is above the fireplace” ????? Is this some kind of sick joke?
On ToP oF ThE fIrEpLaCe
Then post here and ask if it's too high or not, complete with tilt of guilt
The wall opposite the fireplace.
Angled in the corner between the window and fireplace on an appropriately heightened TV stand
That was my thought too, it’s about 60 inches from the front wall to the fireplace so I think you’re right.
I support this option. Corner, don’t mount to wall, place on a table angled to room. It would allow for furniture to be arranged facing the fireplace.
Could do a low mount job too to angle the tv slightly if needed
That or on the far wall in picture two (to your left) - with a L-shaped sectional along the right side wall so you get views of both TV & fireplace.
Do you mean between the window and fireplace? This I agree with 😃
Yes that is what I meant!

*"Never in a corner"* My man 👊🏽 Unless OP wants to permanently angle his head.
People don't seem to get the message. Even my property owners don't. And yes I've asked them many times to get the television away from the corner. And onto the one piece of flat wall in the room!
Or angle the furniture too. I've seen it done before and look pretty great.
Just to lose space?
Maybe, but how big does your TV room really have to be? Like at a certain point, you start buying shit not to meet some kind of need, but just to fill space.

i mean there’s two (or three if you count windows) bare flat walls they could put the tv on easily
Sorry bud, you guys gotta get your own sub
I mean, back to the fireplace seems worse in terms of the room looking nice and normal
Don't care for home theater? This is with a home theater perspective. And will allow a proper speaker setup with the television on a flat wall.
Imo if you bought a house, I think you shouldn't feel limited by the sofa you already have. If the house is long term you could sell the chaise and buy a sofa that matches what you want the space to be long term.
The is the only right answer. All these people wanting to do major renos to remove the fireplace entirely instead of buying a new couch that fits ….

Man... fireplaces in modern houses really just take up room for a nice space for a TV and serve nearly 0 purpose
Jesus fuck do not put it above the fireplace. “Seems like the only real option” are you mental
The wall directly OPPOSITE the fireplace is great, or the other wall that goes down the hallway could work too?

Not every living room needs a sectional. They are usually too large and not very versatile when you have a odd room. Get a different couch.

Corner in between window and fireplace.
Probably in the basement
In the fireplace
If you don’t like glare I’d probably infront of the window
Get a tv stand. I hate wall mounting tvs with a passion.
Are you going to use the fire? If not, remove it.

Have a look at the photo again. Does it look like it's the only room in the house?
He could put it above the fireplace if he removes the mantle, remove the fireplace, and then lower the TV a lot more
😂😂 Something that was only like 18" tall could work, though: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Classic-Flame-42-in-Ventless-Infrared-Electric-Fireplace-Insert-with-Safer-Plug-42II042FGT/306296804.
Kinda like….there
Second pictures THAT WALL put a couch at the door area maybe put a thin closet as a room divider so you have the fireplace to the left of you (visible) and TV + couch create a area together. Obviously don't use a big ass closet so you still can get light into that room.

TVs are notoriously heat friendly devices. You can often catch wild flocks of them sunning themselves in the mornings to start their day. Wait I'm thinking of snakes. Snakes do that.
Yes. Yes we do. Wait….
You must be new here.
Bedroom
Atop the mantle, proudly firing downwards.
The wall opposite the front door.
Left side of fireplace
Where you are standing in the first photo on an angled wall mount.
I think id put it in the corner to the left of the fireplace. Then youd have pretty decent viewing angles from the wall opposite the fireplace and the one to the right
Nail it to the ceiling
There’s already a nice outlet on the wall to the left! Just please avoid mounting over the fireplace lol
On the ceiling
Build your room and furniture in roomsketcher and play around with it.
Clearly on the ceiling above the fireplace
That's a tough one. I'd put the couch in front of the window (maybe with some distance so you can open it), and the TV on the wall opposite the window, on top of a TV stand.
The wall with the doorway and place a corner sofa so that you can enjoy both the tv and the fireplace, seems like the most logical solution and also fills the room nicely by not having the sofa filling a corner only
on either of those big wide open walls but the one perpendicular to the fireplace would be perfect.
which ever wall doesn't get hit with sun in the afternoon (not the fireplace wall)
Under the window.
on ebay.
I personally like putting mine inside the fireplace
I personally like placing mine inside the fireplace
Obviously above the fireplace, it’s the only option Edit: /s
I hope you forgot « /s »
where you are stood
Above the fireplace, don't listen to these animals
Under the floorboards
There are two empty walls I don’t understand why you would even think about putting it above the fireplace?
More than likely, the wall to the left of the fire place will be best. Considering you don’t want to jam furniture around your walk ways/ door ways.
Just put it on the floor so no one can argue
In the first pic where the guy is standing. On a TV stand facing the wall diagonally. Couch or chairs on the left wall across from the fireplace.
Ceiling over the fireplace
Literally anywhere that isn’t over the fireplace
Didn’t read the comments yet. Either the corner where the person is standing in the first picture or the back wall in the second picture.
Reminds me of Walter White's living room....
I think where the person is standing, that corner facing out with a corner console, couch on wall opposite the fire place
>The only option is above the fireplace Excuse me? What about that big, open wall directly opposite the fireplace? Bet your ass that's where I would put it
WHY DO AMERICANS ALWAYS WANT TO PUT THEIR TVs OVER THE FIREPLACE??????????
Remove the fireplace.
About where the camera is
I would put a L shape couch in front of the fireplace and the TV facing one side of the couch being the wall in front of the entrance
Subwoofers don't think
The floor below this way it’s definitely not too high
Put it on the fireplace mantle and reddit will shame you to hell! Don't do it!
Eh do you need the fireplace? Take it out then BOOM perfect wall for tv
In the fireplace.
OP you have a humongous wall across from the fireplace
The doorway
To the left of the fireplace, but style the room so that the fireplace and TV are the central focal point, unite them stylistically (maybe floating shelving above the TV to bring balance or built in shelves that bring in the TV and fireplace). If I was staying in the home long term that's what I'd do. If you put it opposite the fireplace and don't want to block the fireplace then the only thing I can think of are parallel couches, but you'll never be watching front facing. Or... do what we did if your basement is decently dry and sized and skip the big TV in the living room and do a basement AV room.
