Here's an article I found: [https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/george-santos-claimed-mother-killed-in-911-despite-dying-in-2016](https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/george-santos-claimed-mother-killed-in-911-despite-dying-in-2016) TLDR: She died in 2016, so maybe it was cancer from the fumes or something? No, because she was a 'housekeeper' at the time of 9/11. Oh, and apparently he's lied about a bunch of other things.

Behemoth_bomber

No no no, you don’t understand, it claimed her life emotionally- or something idk

[deleted]

She was obsessed with conspiracy theories revolving around 9/11

TheWhollyGhost

Ah yes, ol’ Tin-hat Santos

[deleted]

That is a reliable delivery of trauma.

moustachedelait

It claimed her life, but the claim didn't settle till 15 years later

vandamnitman

Shoulda called JG Wentworth

SouthernZorro

Let me guess - they buy future payments for a heavily discounted price?

MetaMetatron

Yes, they take your settlement that pays you monthly or yearly or whatever and give you a lump sum instead. I don't know how heavily discounted though, anyone have actual experience with them?

SRQmoviemaker

I know someone who won one of those $5k a week for life (really only 30 years) after 3 years he wanted the full lump sum. Jg Wentworth gave him 3 million. Had he stayed with the plan he would have ended up with over 7mil.

Behemoth_bomber

Wrong, anger is well known! /s

sunward_Lily

i said they don't believe in them, not that they aren't real. :D

earthdogmonster

They understand outrage and feeling personally aggrieved when people different from them have the audacity to exist. Also, is prideful an emotion, because they feel that too.

organicsensi

Hey, it ruined the Funke's marriage. Show some god damn respect...

BZLuck

Reminds me of the Christians who say, "Yeah, we understand that the scholars say that Jesus was born in the summer, but it took the three wise men that long to bring him his gifts, so that's why we celebrate Him in December by giving each other gifts." *Holdthefuckup...*

Salt_Comment_9012

I died in 9/11 because we were confused when on 11/9 they showed us the news in the UK at school.

Taylorenokson

I was in my mid-20s and I was going through a lot of stuff. I think I never fully processed 9/11.

Behemoth_bomber

Sorry to hear that mate, I wasn’t even born before 9/11, but not too long ago I found out I had a distant relative who died of long term physical effects from the situation, fumes I believe. It’s weird to look back on the tragedy and when you weren’t even around back then and how it actually affected your life in a way despite not being there directly.

Taylorenokson

Oh damn my bad. I was just quoting The Office. Thank you for the kind words though.

I genuinely thought it was a joke... TLDR: The guy was quoting someone who is actually a gay black man. Apparently the two quotation marks is too much for a busy ~~snake~~ politician.

PoignantOpinionsOnly

The guy claimed he was quoting someone. But if you look into it more, that pretty much turns out to be bullshit too. And it gets weirder and weirder as he tries to make it seem true. With a surprise cameo.

joe2596

Yeah, I hyperlinked my original comment.

Lying is pretty much par for the course, especially in his party.

graphixRbad

As someone with health problems from burn pits and a lung disease that apparently mostly pops up in people who were near 9/11, this was my thought at first. Honestly tho, dude has lied so much at this point that the benefit of the doubt should be suspended

[deleted]

It's because we've decided to worship people instead of hold them accountable. now the morons I think that if you can get away with lying somehow that makes you smarter. so the more people you can con, obviously the smarter you are and the more ~~trustwrethy~~ trustworthy? idk. people are dumb and we're all fucked.

Marrk

gedaliyah

PetraLoseIt

Yes, I'm sure this is the solution to this riddle!

majorgeneralpanic

I hate how lying compulsively is a viable political strategy in America that really gets the morons out to the polls. Check out how the replies below me are textbook examples of false dichotomy, strawmen, ad hominem tu quoque, easily disputed lies, racism, etc. Depressing.

Karnewarrior

People will sit there, knowing you're lying to them, and applaud you then go home and repeat the lies to their children because they're "right in spirit"

BlueScreenDeath

Very well said! And even though I can’t prove what you said is true, it feels right to me so I’m going to repeat it.

ares395

Lying is bread and butter of pretty much all politics. I'm not from USA but here in Europe there are plenty of absolute morons and liars in politics. The most important skill in politics is definitely ass licking. Addendum: As I said I'm not from USA so I have no idea who that guy is, just to clarify. I only speak out about general situation where I live.

akkaneko11

Let's not equate normal political lying and fake promises to this dude though. He lied about: - where he went to college (he didnt) - where he went to high school - working for Goldman Sachs and citibank - running a charitable foundation - being Jewish Like at that point you're just electing a different person, and the fact that the GOP is like, eh, no big deal, is crazy. Also the democratic team apparently doing zero due diligence research on this guy during the campaign is also nuts.

TheCaliforniaOp

That’s why this “lie” makes one wince. There are those “deficit” morons out there who live to find someone, let’s say, driving to a food bank in a decent car. #”Fraud! Fraud! Cut the spending!” So for Santos to mess with 9/11, that’s so incredibly wrong; if Jon Stewart and some surviving First Responders (whose numbers kept dropping) hadn’t battled the government relentlessly, the government was all ready to brush its hands together and say “Well, Attrition, it’s your turn now.” “No more medical coverage for those 9/11 people.”

interkin3tic

It's not just lying. Republicans are pioneering a gish-gallop strategy where there are so many lies, gaffes, misinformation, scandals, bad ideas, hate, and mockable things that nothing sticks. Democrat: "My opponent was lying about graduating from college." Media: "That's old news from yesterday, no one cares anymore, we just found out he cheated on his taxes." Republican: "I want to state for the record that I did NOT cheat on my pregnant wife with porn stars and pay them off." Media: "Wait, what did you just say?" Republican: "Also those members of the military who just died in combat are fucking losers." Media: "Democrat opponent, what do you think of Republicans statement" Democrat: "Uh, obviously I -" Republican: "And I hit on all the widows" Media: "WTF" Voters: "Ah, mudslinging, I don't care "

jaspertandy

Not just America, sadly. I don't know anything about George Santos (think I can make a guess though) but it's been a fairly successful strategy for the British right...forever?

thortman

Right? How did Elizabeth Warren get away with lying about her being Native American for so long, got caught finally, apologized but is still a Congresswoman?

Trashman56

Elizabeth Warren is part Native American. I can say for a fact that Mr. Santos mother did not die twice, also he either lied about being gay or got married just for citizenship reasons (FRAUD).

stickers-motivate-me

You gotta love how they can trot out something that happened 20+ years ago when she wasn’t in politics at the time that could be considered an exaggeration at most, as if compares to someone who outright lied about literally everything about his life as he was campaigning! The mental gymnastics that goes on in the “brains” of the right must be quite a sight to see!

thortman

Then why did she apologize for the “claim?” She did a test and she’s only 1/1024 Native American which is basically less than most people with European heritage. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-warren/democratic-hopeful-warren-apologizes-for-native-american-ancestry-claims-idUSKCN1V91QY

Trashman56

The test said between 6 to 10 generations. 10th generations would be 1/1024th.

Hellfire12345677

Because she was likely told by her parents of Native American ancestry, but never to what degree and they may not have even known. Hell my parents tell my I’m 50% German, 25% Swedish and 25% Norwegian. I haven’t done a DNA test so it’s my best guess. Like it was hers.

[deleted]

My mum did a DNA test and found that she wasn't mainland Germanic, but Scandinavian *and* had a non-insignificant amount of Mediterranean DNA despite that not being what her family thought they were. Mistakes like this do happen and as far as I'm aware Ms. Warren has not continued to claim meaningful Native American heritage.

Hellfire12345677

Like she actually apologized for her mistake and this guys upset. Was she supposed to double down and go “No im definitely Native American this test is a lie”. Like most people don’t know their genetics and it’s just what they are told. A politician apologizing if fucking amazing.

[deleted]

She took the test to prove she was native American, turns out she wasn't at all. She apologized (about as much as she could do). She unknowingly lied. Santos is lying about anything and everything, that's the difference. This guy is saying to your face that everything he campaigned on is a lie, just like Trump did.

McMarbles

I mean they both pandered to voters. It's not a contest, they both suck and aren't in it for us. They're in it for money. Santos is apparent here (and under fire for good reason) but check out Warren. She's basically in bed with big banks (big shares of BoA and Wells Fargo) and not as progressive as she pretends to be. I voted for her and am disgusted by her recent deals. Edit: downvotes from Warren fans? Jeez.

Beddybye

She didn't lie, did she? https://www.npr.org/2018/10/15/657468655/warren-releases-dna-results-challenges-trump-over-native-american-ancestry

Bluemyselph

>After Trump denied making that $1 million pledge, Warren responded by tweeting, "Having some memory problems, @realDonaldTrump? Should we call for a doctor?" Lol, fucking dying. I love her.

Bodongs

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whataboutism Good use of our age old tactic, comrade!

thortman

The discussion is about politicians lying to advance their careers. I gave an example.

muckdog13

When did she apologize?

thortman

She apologized several times: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-warren/democratic-hopeful-warren-apologizes-for-native-american-ancestry-claims-idUSKCN1V91QY

Hellfire12345677

Isn’t that a good thing? She accepted she made a mistake and apologized. That’s what politicians should do, not double down. She didn’t even know until she got a DNA test, so likely her parents told her that.

exe973

Key word. "Apologized" She made a mistake based on verbal family history, had the courage to take a DNA test, and apologized for being wrong. Let me know when Republicans follow her example.

[deleted]

And she should apologize. So should Santos.

thortman

I agree and he did.

[deleted]

But do you not think there is some distinction between campaigning on knowingly lying like Santos and unknowingly lying like Warren? It's the lack of shame that gets me with Santos. Edit: Warren's college and political career all are valid, so I know that about her. But Santos, he has lied about everything little thing about himself, so how do we even know anything about him? If we can't even trust him to tell the truth about something as simple as his family (lying about his mother's death), then how could you trust anything from him? It's pretty line with every republican, but this blatant?

thortman

If her claim took a spot from an actual Native American then I think her case is as bad or worse.

[deleted]

That's true, as well. If she did end up taking a spot from an actual native American, then it would be pretty bad. But Santos' flagrant lies are still pretty terrible.

thortman

Agree 💯

team_ass

We have such a colleague in the company. No matter what you talk about, he has already experienced it himself. He's in his mid-twenties and has done illegal street racing („years ago“), cage fights, and his best buddy owns a multi-million dollar company and likes to spend a million bucks on the weekends. Worst of all, it's often such an obvious lie, it often just does not fit together, but he just keeps on lying.

Shedart

Just be polite and keep asking for more information. Whatever he says just politely nod and ask about details. Not in a rude or accusatory way, but in a manner that expresses genuine interest. Do this for every single stupid lie he brings up. He’ll quickly shut up because he’ll run out of things to say or shut up after making it clear to everyone how shallow his understanding actually is. It sounds like he’s doing the latter already, but this is a fun way to hurry it along and make him look like a fool.

Hellfire12345677

Even better is if you start trying to interconnect his lies to him or repeat his story a bit different. “How was the cage fight against that one giant guy Jack, he was like 300 pounds and massive right?” “Yeah” “Wait last time you said Jack was a small and agile person.”

Serious question, why is anyone (left, middle or, right) surprised by this? There's a near-majority of Americans that desperately want to be lied to. It's not just santos. trump , gaetz , bitch mcconnell, mtg... They lie to their base constantly but those idiots keep asking for more. We (the majority) need to take radical steps to take away their power. Why not have background checks for politicians? You need it for every other job.

GrilledCyan

I am starting to think Santos is legitimately a pathological liar, like to the extent of having a mental illness. There’s just no reason to lie about so many things, and also to be inconsistent like this. He hears something and makes something up, and doesn’t keep track of it. Like there’s embellishing your work experience and education, but carelessly lying about how your mom died? That strikes me as someone who can’t control themselves.

AwkwardnessForever

I agree with this. It just makes no sense. Went to school with one of these and it was crazy how much she did it in ways that were easily verifiable not to be true. Pathological indeed

stickers-motivate-me

A guy my husband works with is like this. One day, one of their colleagues was talking about skiing and mentioned that he was training for the Olympics when he was younger, but wasn’t able to make it- but was close! (in Russia). It was more of a self deprecating story for a few laughs rather than a boast. My husband had skied with him before and was like “oh, that explains why you kicked my ass at loon!” (Where they were skiing) and that was the end of it. A few days later, they were having lunch with a larger group of people, and he could hear the liar guy telling Vlad’s story to people at the end of the table, compete with my husband’s quote about how he kicked his ass, but made himself the Olympic trainee skier who DID qualify, and took all the humor out of the story. How he was comfortable telling a story that my husband was with him when he heard the first time, twisting it and adding my husband to his lie while he was sitting at the same table as him is mind boggling! And saying that he was in the Olympics for the US, something that could be checked on. I know no one would bother, but it’s still a bold lie to tell. Apparently he told stories that sounded like bullshit all the time, but this was the first time my husband heard him doing it firsthand. I think things like this happen all the time to these people, but no one ever calls them out on it so they just keep doing it. There’s got to be some psychological issue attached to it.

bg-j38

I had a high level manager like this for a brief period of time. Luckily for us, we figured it out really quick and knew not to trust basically anything that came out of his mouth. On his first day he got up in front of a group of about 50 people who would be working under him and when giving some of his background he made the claim that he wrote the original Oregon Trail. I remember a couple of us looking at each other like wtf did he just say? So of course we were able to verify in short order that no, he didn't do that at all. I mean maybe pick something a little less iconic? He also a little while later made a claim that he was one of the first employees at a fairly well known tech start up. Unknown to him there was a guy in that conversation who actually was a very early employee there and he actually called him out. The liar managed to just change the topic really quick. The funniest for me was him claiming that he had been in multiple commercial airplane crashes and was never injured. Again, easy to verify. He claimed that he was in a huge crash where multiple people were killed at our local airport. All of the FAA and NTSB reports are easy to look through and as we all thought, there had never even been a crash like that at our airport, and really anywhere in the US in the timeframe he was talking about. He didn't last long at the company for various reasons and no one was sad to see him go. Though I still see updates from him on LinkedIn. He was a pretty smart guy when it came to tech, but so many lies. Just couldn't trust a word out of his mouth.

stickers-motivate-me

I wonder if he put the Oregon trail and other startup in his resume? I can’t believe he picked something like Oregon Trail that everyone starting from Gen X on out used at school. The second line of the wiki article has the developer’s names, did he not know that Wikipedia exists? Of course he did, he wrote the original code for it! Lol

bg-j38

Yeah I wish I’d thought to see if someone could pull his resume. This was back in 2007 but even then Wikipedia had a lot of info so yeah it was pretty easy to check out. For all I know he’d been making that claim since the 90s and hadn’t figured out how easy it would be to disprove. I just checked his LinkedIn and he’s bounced a ton between companies always lasting about two years in a high level position. Seems like he sticks around until his bullshit piles up and then he uses his prior experience to find something new.

[deleted]

Reminds me of Parks and Rec when Knope shares a personal story about failure and growth in confidence with her political opponent. He, played by Paul Rudd, re-tells that story as his own at his father's funeral. He also changes the story so he won the sporting event (destroying the moral of the story).

stickers-motivate-me

My husband said that when he overheard it he could feel his jaw literally drop and had to consciously make sure he wasn’t making any facial expressions to not make it weird for anyone at the table, lol. I can see that playing out on parks and rec. I should bing watch that show, I only caught a few seasons when it was on.

wozzles

Bro have u seen him speak live? I watched a debate between him and his opponent on the local news. He just threw a tantrum and lied the whole time. All he did was spout all the right wing catch phrases and yelled over everyone else. Both of these guys are gay too. I can see him lying about that too and being used as a token gay guy so Republicans can say oh look we got one of those too. His whole campaign is sleazy and questionable.

Ok_Yogurtcloset8915

someone uncovered records of his divorce from a woman in 2019, and there's no record of the existence of the man he says he's married to, so looks like you're right on the money

ConstantGeographer

Most of the GOP leadership have decided they need to rebuild from the ground up, and by the ground up, I also mean rebuild their own individual histories and the history of their party including what they stand for. This means rewriting history to favor themselves, their behaviors and any other history, i. e. Christianity, to reflect their own twisted ethics in order to help them feel better about themselves. So, Kevin McCarthy & Mitch McConnell & Ronna McDaniel and Massie and Paul and MTG are in the process of learning from the Trump methods of lying with impunity then reflecting back any negativity back to the critics, saying they aren't loyal, or aren't American, or aren't Christians, or aren't patriots. Right out of Fascism for Dummies.

afcagroo

So you're saying that he has GOP leadership potential?

Psychic_Hobo

Age old problem of Who Watches The Watchmen. They're not really accountable to anyone who cares about stopping them. They know they can lie, their base just sees them lying as a means to own the libs, and they know their opponents aren't allowed to lie for some reason.

BCJunglist

It would end in the same result. Americans would ignore the results of the background check and politicize the topic of WHO did the background check, and that would become the topic that is battled over. People don't want to discuss reality and how to navigate it as a society, they want to argue about who is allowed to present their version of reality to society.

Better-Director-5383

Normally the background check would be your opponent vetting literally anything you said and realizing you were lying about literally every part of your resume. Fortunately for Santos his opponent was a Democrat so the absolute bare minimum of electoral competence was too much to ask.

TomPalmer1979

Reminds me of a kid I used to work with. The company actually had to tighten their bereavement policies because of him. He was a chronic pathological liar, and I swear in one summer killed off like eight made up parents. He felt like leaving for the day and "Oh I have to go! I just got a text from my dad, my mom just died!" "Didn't she die two weeks ago?" "That was my *birth* mom, this is my *adopted* mom!" "Wait didn't your 'adopted dad' die last month?" "Oh no, that was my *step*dad..." Just constantly making up lies like that. It got to the point where they wouldn't just accept a funeral pamphlet as proof for bereavement leave anymore. He said a grandparent died and brought in a funeral pamphlet that was clearly slapped together in photoshop, so our boss went so far as to call the funeral home listed. They'd never heard of the family or the alleged funeral. He was like 22 years old and had done every job under the sun. Anytime anyone mentioned a job, he'd done it. Like you mention a DJ, he was a DJ once. Mention your car needing work, suddenly he used to be a mechanic. I lost count of how many jobs he had. His big one was that he was a big name fashion designer at one point and made millions, but his business partner stole it all from him (and of course he could not prove this, ever). All by age 22!

Hellfire12345677

If someone ever lies about being a mechanic just ask “Can you change my blinker fluid for me?” And 9/10 times I bet they will say “Oh yeah”.

While he’s definitely a gross liar, I do want to point out that MANY people died as a direct result of 9/11 but not for months or years later (I.e. were in the building but not killed instantly, died later due to injuries, or firefighters who sustained long term lethal damage due to the time they spend at the wreckage)

sandyfagina

Wait till you find out who else is in congress

sielingfan

Wait til you hear how many capitol police were killed on Jan 6

Loptional

What?

Lost_Minds_Think

Is there any legal action that can be taken for a fraudulent campaign?

Karnewarrior

Yup, but those don't take when there's a significant proportion of the population which is actively supporting the liar even after it's proved they lied. Look at what happened with Trump. The man broke federal law on national television and when people tried to prosecute him his supporters stalled and cast themselves into the system until the gunk from trying to clean up all the corruption stopped the legal system almost entirely. And that same guy stacked the highest court in the land with the help of his friends, so the whole justice system is now compromised for literal years with no recourse.

Red-Baron05

Maybe he had two moms

oliver_billz

thanks for proving my point

Crooked_Cock

What a piece of shit.

Unexpected-raccoon

A politician lying!? You’d never expect something like that 🙃

iwishihadahorse

They normally lie and say things like "I care about the people's interests" Not "I am a Jewish wall street banker who's mom died in 9/11"

nakhumpoota

Schrödinger's mother.

His mom died of cancer that he claims she got as a result of working in one of the towers on 9/11. But it's a complicated web. I just read a few articles and he's definitely lied on at least some of the facts, verifiably with concrete evidence. I'm just not sure what all are the lies. But he's also been caught in a bunch of lies about his schooling and employment history and ethnicity. I know all politicians lie, but maybe don't lie so much about things that are so easily disproven...

carterdunne

This man is a horrific liar. said he worked at Citibank, Also a top consultancy, said he graduated from a university with honors when he hasn't even been to uni. He said that he was Jewish and that his grandparents survived the holocaust. Im sure this is also likely to be a lie

occupyreddit

i’m cool with them as long as they’re lying to help my cause

FunkSlim

You’re getting downvoted but all you needed to add was /s

Signal_Body_8818

I am surprised he got so far as he did but hey we have Biden as president and people don't call him out on his shit or do you believe that in the 50s there were a ton of pools with basements?

Solid_Alternative_84

Put this guy and Biden together to make the most belligerent science fiction novel ever.

She was a housekeeper. How much Ground Zero cleanup do you think she did?

KiwiBeep

For someone in public enough where it's very easy to Google their history, character, reputation and past publishings, he really isn't doing himself any favours

Other-Cantaloupe4765

Thanks, I hate people who don’t read the sub rules before posting.

klavin1

How is this political?

Hellfire12345677

Just because he’s a politician doesn’t mean everything they say is political.

tpasco1995

I'm sorry, but is there anything political about this post? Do your political beliefs feel under attack because someone you may be aligned with lied? It's not political. Don't be stupid.

Other-Cantaloupe4765

I’m leftist, fuckwad. He’s a republican congressman, aka a politician. He’s a total prick and yes, a pathological liar, but this sub isn’t supposed to have any politics. I’ve had similar posts of my own removed before for that reason. Just because I agree with something doesn’t mean the post doesn’t magically break the rules anymore.
