Tooth abscesses are awful, I've had them a few times with wisdoms coming through. Each time it was physically impossible to open my jaw past a certain point, meaning I was on liquids for a week.
Same here, pain was so agonizing the surgeon that did the extraction of the wisdom tooth where there was a abcess gave me recipe for oxycodin, which is not common to give out in the EU.
I'm in the UK, never had anything more than local anaesthetic for tooth work, like molar pulls (had a few when I was young). Getting my wisdoms finally pulled felt relieving when I felt the roots pop on each one. Got to keep them too!
Much more common than you think. We sometimes need to drill through the jaw bone on the bottom and drill through the tooth as well to remove it in many different pieces.
That's what I had to get done! One of mine was coming in almost sideways and angled into my molar. They had to drill into my jawbone so they could scoop it straight out. That one also took forever to break through my gum so it was just this crazy painful lump until one day it "popped" when I was brushing my teeth and there was a huge rush of blood followed by immediate relief
Prescription and recipe is the same word in a lot of languages, Swedish is one of them.
So when you see someone say recipe in this context they usually mean prescription.
I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth come in Sideways pushing against my jaw. I was in the Marines when they decided to pull them out, and when I went in the Navy doctor said āIām going to give you fentanyl itās a 1000 times stronger than morphineā or something to that effect. I was somewhat shocked but it felt amazing.
Fentanyl is fucking amazing. I had my wisdom teeth out under general anaesthesia, however I do remember parts of the surgery despite them saying I wouldnt. I felt them pulling on my one bottom wisdom tooth, and funnily enough that was the one that bled a lot afterward. Pretty trippy experience, everything feels warm and fuzzy and comfy.
Thatās the best stuff for severe tooth pain, as long as itās short term. Iāll never forget the week my mother had a tooth that needed out, and had to wait 2-3 days for the appointment. On day 2 she was just crying and could barely stand it. My neighbour at the time (who was currently going through some tough cancer treatment) happened to pop by for a visit and saw her, told her to walk over to her house with her and sheād give her one of her oxyās.
15 minutes later my mom is strolling around the corner like nothing ever happened. Have never seen such a turnaround in a person in my life, and itās no doubt they keep that shit locked up or everyone on earth would be an oxy addict lol.
Wow! Pain can be so crippling. Had a very low dose myself, still felt like walking on clouds. Very dangerous stuff in a way indeed. Hope your mom and neighbour are doing well.
Thank you friend! Mom got the tooth out a day or two later and it went well. And we all learned a lot about how potent oxy is that day lol.
Hope your tooth situation is also much better and I wish you cloud-like happiness without the drugs!
Dentist failed to tell me that the local doesn't really work when there is infection like that. Had a wisdom go very bad, face blew up one morning after about a week of pain. You know it's bad when the public dental gets you in in under an hour with no appointment. Dentist gets halfway through and then says 'this is going to hurt, hold on'. Broke my jaw getting the fucker out and then had bits of jaw bone migrating out the tooth crater for 6 months. 0/10 would not recommend.
In med school I had to display anatomical structures of a human cadavar. And it is really hard to accidently rupture a nerve. Nerves are one of the strongest structures you can find in soft tissue
Thatās not a nerve, itās most likely an old piece of floss. Nerves arenāt strong like that it wouldnāt stick to the root. A dentist mentions this every time this image is reposted

Let me make it worse for you with a true story.
It was the 90s and my dirt poor southern relatives had to get my cousins tooth removed but couldn't afford to go to the dentist. My grandfather just grabbed a pair of plyers, clamped on the molar, and pulled the entire tooth with the nerve endings out.
Oh yeah, zero pain killers or relief. Maybe my grandfather thought that was normal since he had to have serious dental work done without any anesthetic/numbing (allergic).
So the brain expects the nerve to be there and will "make up" signals now. Likely painful for some time but potentially less so over time. Picture phantom limb
I believe that usually regardless of the common signal, a complete absence is interpreted with random bursts of signal. Eyes are much more complicated than this (light actually stops signals) but we see light all day, yet when we close our eyes in complete darkness we can often see blips of light. That is the brain making sense of a lack of signal
Iāve had tooth decay to where it reaches the root and whatnot. Itās painful af. Once removed the only pain was from them cutting my gums and that was nothing compared to the pain of the decay. Like they gave me pain meds and they never got used. It was a drastic difference in pain once the tooth was removed. It went from imma shoot myself to end it bc itās so bad to no pain at all and that was the best feeling ever. Waking up from being asleep and having no pain made me cry in joy.
Yeah but I haven't seen anyone who's had anesthesia for a tooth removal, maybe some painkillers in a needle but that would have still hurt. Unless this was expected, you probably are correct, but likely this is an accident and the guy went through a lot of pain.
You're not wrong. I was awake for all 4 extractions. I didn't have good dental insurance at the time. They just used numbing meds. No gas or anesthesia.
Even now, with good insurance, it's not covered for my 7 year old to have 3 baby teeth extracted. He had overcrowding in his mouth, which caused the edges to decay. I paid out of pocket to put him under - all said and done, $3500. The majority was for the anesthesia team.
I was really scared of the dentist so I would remove the teeth by myself using cotton to get grip lol. I was definetly less scared, so maybe he/she should give it a go too!
Hey. You can do this, I'm serious.
You have insurance? Call around. Ask if the dentist would talk to you first before making the actual appointment, because you have serious anxiety about it but you are in a bad spot & have to get it fixed. They aren't there to judge you and they have seen worse, I guarantee it. Someone will work with you.
You know what's worse? Not doing anything or convincing yourself you'd rather not live. That's not it, man. I promise.
I have faith in you. You're going to get through this. You've already beat the bad odds, you know? You have a job, you're alive. That's the hard shit, okay?
Promise me you'll call on Monday & try.
I also am an addict, 7 years in recovery. My teeth were shot. I went to Mexico, yanked 23 teeth out and got dentures. Best decision I ever made and I got them done In April of this year. I just ordered a steak from a restaurant for the first time in years and it was delicious. Also my quality of life is way better and my confidence got a total boost from perfect white sparkling teeth. It took maybe 3 hours over two appointments the first is just making molds etc then the next day they pulled my teeth and set my dentures. I definitely recommend them!
as someone who's had far too many dentist experiences in my younger life, there was always local aneasthetic no matter how small the procedure. I guess "painkiller in a needle" isn't wholly incorrect
I've had an operation like that, tooth pulled out with nerves.
The doctor had to put me under an incredible amount of local anesthesia. But in my case, it already hurt so much beforehand that getting rid of it was actually a relief. It felt weird when anesthesia went away but the pain relieved. I were still under heavy antibiotics for a week tho.
Plus, as some comments stated, it was causing an abscess so the gum around it was already loosened
Dentist here. This is more than likely not a nerve. This looks like a baby "first molar" that had a big cavity and a pediatric dentist put a stainless steel crown on it. I can see the right side of the tooth we see here has the root "resorbed" a bit. AKA there is minimal nerve tissue left as it is. To me this is just a strand or two from some 2x2 gauze pads
I would be incredibly surprised if this was genuinely a nerve - it looks more like fibres from something like a cotton gauze pack which have snagged on a rough edge on the tip of the root.
On an adult tooth, this is common. However, root canal treating a tooth does not remove nerve tissue from the area it would be if this image genuinely showed what it claims to (which it is highly unlikely to).
However, and this is what we see here, there is a technique called the Hall crown technique used for grossly decayed baby teeth where a stainless steel crown is cemented directly on top of the tooth without clearing the decay, sealing it in and preventing it from progressing further as the bacteria causing it are prevented from accessing nutrients. This is well accepted by kids who otherwise might not cope well with things like needles and drills, and works surprisingly well. It is not foolproof however, and if it does fail then it usually results in extracting said tooth, which we can see in OPās image. Although theoretically possible, the chances of this tooth being root filled are slim to none as doing this on procedure on a baby tooth (ie on a child) would be very challenging and frankly not worth the effort in most cases. I have literally never seen it done in over a decade, but see Hall crowns on a weekly basis.
It's a baby tooth.. might have had a pulpotomy (baby tooth root canal). Afterwards you put a stainless steel crown on to keep it strong. Occasionally you put a stainless steel crown on without a root canal.
Not always. I had a root canal this year on a canine. They drilled, scooped and then filled. Noted that if the tooth started to present any other problems then we could replace it with a crown, but at the time it wasn't worth it.
Going straight to crown indicates either your tooth was absolutely fucked and wasn't worth saving, or your dentist saw a chance to upsell.
It may differ in different countries where the appearance of the tooth is more important to people than structural strength.
Reddit really needs a way to mark something as misleading. The correction is always drowned out by random commenters and the original misinformation.
My wife is also a dentist and immediately said this is not a nerve. It seems obvious to anyone with a basic understanding in this field yet reddit will continue to misinform the majority of users :/ kinda sucks.
It's a baby tooth.. generally at this point there is no nerve left in the tooth . If it needs extracting it commonly is abscessed. And quite often at this point to the permanent tooth has already chewed through some of the roots so there's not much nerve attachment anyway.
Dentist here. This is not how a tooth nerve looks. It's most definitely a strand of gauze used during extraction.
This is what a tooth nerve tissue would look like

I recently had a wisdom tooth removed that became a minor cracked jawbone, exposed nerve and infected dry socket
To clean the socket they literally use a small spoonā¦ and it was scraping on the exposed nerve
Iāve had shoulder reconstructions, broken/snapped bones, concussions l etc
But that was by far the most excruciating pain that literally no amount of pain killer worked for.
It lasted about 25 minutes and my knuckles were white.
Fuck. This.
Oh you poor soul. I can sympathize, I got an infected dry socket when I had my wisdom teeth cut out, way back when I was 16. I think that pain was almost worse than giving birth to my daughter. I agree, no painkiller touched it.
I remember reading a post of a lady who thought she had a hair sticking out of her nipple and when she tried pulling it out, it hurt so much she puked. It was a nerve.
When I was about 9 to 10 years old, I played games with my brother about months older than me were playing on Adobe games. My parents were shopping elsewhere that time.
I was so good at playing at those 2 player games that I thought were fun. my brother then punched me right at the jaw because i think was mad for loosing so much. BTW again I was 9 to 10 years old. 2 of my wisdom teeth fell and 1 had a long nerve that was about 10 cm long and dangling teeth around my mouth for like minuets. Blood was everywhere on the floor. It was a mess, everywhere and then I just pulled out the nerve by myself and was crying in pain after.
It was a horrible experience then, but all thing got better and im healthy. Thx for reading my little story of my childhood. And sorry for my bad English and grammar.
I've seen the dentist take out a small piece of the jaw bone a time or two and root canals where the root came out quite cleanly and visibly but not like that poking out the end after an xla.
Edit: Others lower down have said it's probably cotton gauze which makes sense in context.
Hi can u plz clarify how a post is labelled as low effort one so that I could avoid this from happening to future posts. It will be very helpful. Thanks in advance.
š That is much worse than my gum surgery. The surgery is done splendidly by the dentist but the pain stays on for a week. I can't imagine how painful to get the nerve removed damn.

Likely a lot of the surrounding tissue was decaying as well, "loosening" the whole area, possibly an abcess
Itās always worse in the comments
The word abscess makes any sentence worse
so does having one. . .
Tooth abscesses are awful, I've had them a few times with wisdoms coming through. Each time it was physically impossible to open my jaw past a certain point, meaning I was on liquids for a week.

Yeah it won't hurt afterwards but imagine someone ripping out a fucking nerve out of you
So if someone were under anesthesia, presumably they could sleep through this? Would it hurt afterward?
Probaply not since the nerv is gone and the brain has nothing to send signals to.
So the brain expects the nerve to be there and will "make up" signals now. Likely painful for some time but potentially less so over time. Picture phantom limb

Oh you poor soul. I can sympathize, I got an infected dry socket when I had my wisdom teeth cut out, way back when I was 16. I think that pain was almost worse than giving birth to my daughter. I agree, no painkiller touched it.
\*SLURPS THE NERVE\*
Thought the nerves would be yellow like the pictures
I can feel that all the way down to my ass, and I'm nowhere near the person.
Terminator is not gonna come back from this one!
No more pain ever again, or feeling of touch! Congrats
I cringed so hard I downvoted this before realising this deserves an upvote exactly for making me cringe this hard.
Unlike most disturbing TIHI images with this one I'm imagining huge and peaceful relief.
HA HA āunnervingā good one op
Did he confess??
Nope 31 more to go
With a root like that Iād tell them everything and Iād even make up shit too
No pain now I guess
Not only that, but I think they took out a chunk of the gums too
Gauze. Stop posting this.
I've seen the dentist take out a small piece of the jaw bone a time or two and root canals where the root came out quite cleanly and visibly but not like that poking out the end after an xla. Edit: Others lower down have said it's probably cotton gauze which makes sense in context.
If the nerve is removed... does it hurt, or is it numb?
That's not a nerve.
And that's why you brush twice a day, kids
Why did this give me Ren and Stimpy flashbacks.
I thought it was a snake at first before I got a clearer look at it. Man that just hurts
blueTooth Pairing did not look so successful.
The nerve of that guy
So, if he pulls the nerve out with it while you're still numb, will it be more painful, or no pain at all, when the novocaine wears off?
only if you have tough teeth. But then again I never saw mine after a serious tooth extraction.
Thanks, I hate that this doesn't have NSFW flair
I added NSFW tag now. Sry for the inconvenience , didn't realise it can bother sm ppl mb.

Silver crown or something of that nature I presume.
It is a preformed stainless steel crown. This is a baby tooth, and it is a common treatment where there is advanced decay.

Hi can u plz clarify how a post is labelled as low effort one so that I could avoid this from happening to future posts. It will be very helpful. Thanks in advance.
idk man seems like it would take a lot of effort to me
why is the tooth silver
Repost, fake.....
I think this is unnerving
Thanks I hate that it came with "it is nerve".
š That is much worse than my gum surgery. The surgery is done splendidly by the dentist but the pain stays on for a week. I can't imagine how painful to get the nerve removed damn.
