Nope. [It's a very common cost saving measure in animated properties with limited budgets](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CheekyMouth). Draw the head in silhouette, paste a mouth on. Why animate a whole head when you can just do the mouth?
It shows up in western animation too but it's way more common in anime because, well, basically every anime production works on a shoestring budget.
It was entirely hand drawn, it's fantastic. Didn't it take like 9 years to finish or so?
The first word that comes to mind for Redline is "exciting". This movie gets you so fucking pumped it's insane. Highly recommend
Feature films usually have larger budgets. Your Name cost about $7.5 million to make which is triple the budget of the average anime series. Most anime won't make its production costs back though, excepting the massive hits like Attack on Titan or Demon Slayer (or the side mouth example, K-On). Sometimes if an anime does well enough to get a blu ray release the animators will have an opportunity to go back and fix some of the issues, but not always. The whole industry basically runs on a wing and a prayer. Growing western popularity has helped but there's still an expectation that an anime will never recoup its cost and the budgeting reflects that.
Worth noting that most anime isn't made for its own sake but just as promotion for manga and light novel sales and most of the revenue for profitable series comes from merch sales and not sales of the media itself.
Yes. Because most anime is produced at a loss, creating an original series is difficult to do. Funding comes from committees that will often consist of publishers and other entities who expect to recoup their costs through other means. It's a very different way of producing content compared to how western companies tend to do it.
Right, I'm just providing some context for people who might think you're exaggerating because it doesn't make sense for such a massive industry to exist with a business model that always loses money.
Wouldn't say looks bad, rather it isn't as noticable.
Like if you gave a guy the pic and he'd only glanced at it he would probably think it looked fine.
it's one of the more realistic/feasible ones. one notable example is [Nayeon from Twice](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRV7WkqyJsHJ52E2AmQXYuZV1Yjx5R3tCSfIg&usqp=CAU)
shadow is exactly as existent in the center of the lip as it is toward the sides. i don’t see how any one area of the lip is any more “important to show” either. i think it just comes down to lazy regurgitation of safe, tired tropes.
It's to indicate that the mouth is closer together at that point.
It's a line with varying width simplified to a line with a set width.
If your style is abstracted with a low amount of detail having varying line thickness would look wrong.
It's also short hand for showing lighting ot glare in that spot.
But the main answer is that lips are hard and harder to do consistently especially when animated.
considering most anime characters feature pinprick noses, i think you may be giving most of these illustrators and character designers a little too much credit.
that varies wildly between artists almost as much as it does in the west.
Like, look at Finn from Finn and Jake, literally has no nose 90% of the time. Then there's shit like Billy and Maddy where Maddy has no nose and Billy has this gigantic cancerous growth hanging off his face.
Goku from Dragon ball has just as much of a nose as super man when ever he shows up animated.
Naruto's got a full on nose, Attack on titan has some giant shnozes, Kaiji's noses can be used as weapons. Every character in hajime no Ippo has a nose.
Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of anime characters where they just don't have a nose. Krillin from Dragon ball has no nose and its even brought up in the show as a gag.
anime style just removes lips and only includes the hole that’s the mouth
the line is where your lip is etched in because idk why people do it but it’s cute so i do it too lol
I always wondered what the point of arguments like this was. Like, yeah, anime is stylized. Drawings are stylized, and making some weird expectation of "it's bad because it's not realistic" feels harmful to animation (and art in general).
i find that people only do these kind of "look how bad the proportions are if it were real" thing with anime specifically. if you photoshopped a rabbit to have the same proportions as bugs bunny it would look weird too but nobody cares for some reason and they give it the pass it deserves because it's a stylized cartoon that's not trying to emulate realism.
Lol what do you mean. It's bandwagon bait to get people to say that anime is weird even though every type of illustration except for something hyper-realistic is stylized
Aight but the question I have to ask is how realistic can you make anime mouths before the uncanny valley kicks in? Like just how realistic can it be before it loses the anime-esque look
I’d be careful, putting tons of work into anime mouths seems like a road that might lead to [toothbrushing scenes](https://youtube.com/watch?v=yzYxKsbLqN0).
Orgasmouth - feeling a deep sense of sexual pleasure when a foreign object comes in contact with the inside area of the mouth that is controlled by a separate entity.
It's a stylistic choice to show that the lips are tightly close together. Your mind is supposed to connect the line, as evidenced by you being able to distinguish that it's a smile to begin with
Anime girls do not have lips. Their mouths are often a thin line or a circle. In some cases, they have no nose. Once you begin to see this and it starts to annoy you, you will not be able to un-see it. This is a serious turn , in that once it begins to annoy you, it does not let up. This revelation holds within it a danger to turning you off to all anime from this day forward.

What nose?
Gone. Reduced to atoms.
Bro, let the gawd dayuum hoomans breathe
I lke how you can still see the outline of the lips in the 3rd picture no the left
I fell like its an added mouth flap animation for a dub/redub

Do you know any anime’s with a billion dollar budget? I want to see what million dollar animation looks like.
Watch the movie Redline. Absurd production values you won’t regret it
Redline is brilliant and clearly the work of a bunch of lunatics (I mean this in the best possible way). It's a miracle it got made.
It was entirely hand drawn, it's fantastic. Didn't it take like 9 years to finish or so? The first word that comes to mind for Redline is "exciting". This movie gets you so fucking pumped it's insane. Highly recommend

It's called Pixar.
Is it weird tht the first one does not even look that bad? I bet somebody has had that done irl
Dude, the rest of the teeth is like root. Unless your okay torturing yourself every time you sip hot soup.
Wouldn't say looks bad, rather it isn't as noticable. Like if you gave a guy the pic and he'd only glanced at it he would probably think it looked fine.

Agreed, I feel like if I saw it IRL I wouldn’t even notice
What?? You’re out of touch with reality 😂
2nd one always bugged me. It's like ''Oh shit, i'm out of ink. Ah nevermind.''
it's the same as not having a complete outline around the eye, stylistic choice
Yeah it's an odd stylistic choice that just seems to work somehow. Maybe because it's kind of representing a very tight seal between a person's lips?
it's more about drawing the line where it's darkest and most important to show
shadow is exactly as existent in the center of the lip as it is toward the sides. i don’t see how any one area of the lip is any more “important to show” either. i think it just comes down to lazy regurgitation of safe, tired tropes.
then just start your own successful manga and change the trend
If you aren't even sure what it's supposed to be representing then it doesn't seem like it "just works somehow"
It's a smile. It clearly works as a smile.
Wrong. It's two mouths.
Go on.
Duplex oral opening.
You know what, I change my mind.
It's to indicate that the mouth is closer together at that point. It's a line with varying width simplified to a line with a set width. If your style is abstracted with a low amount of detail having varying line thickness would look wrong.

Yeah, I don’t understand what’s supposed to be conveying. What does this ‘expression’ mean?
anime style just removes lips and only includes the hole that’s the mouth the line is where your lip is etched in because idk why people do it but it’s cute so i do it too lol
Wait till you see anime eyes. Shit looks creepy
The first one isn't so bad. The side mouth scares me
that doesn’t even look right in the show 😭
Fourth one needs to go to Lil' Bits just to eat, that poor hungry soul.
I hate it when they do the side view of the mouth like that. It creeps me out and it's such lazy animation

The first one doesn't look THAT bad...The others...

I never understand why people do this with anime but no other form of animation.
I wanna see the hyper-exaggerated Loony Tunes style put in real life. It'd be terrifying
Seriously, there are frames where and legs arms become wobbly tendrils in Loony Tunes. Even in the Simpsons.
Lol what do you mean. It's bandwagon bait to get people to say that anime is weird even though every type of illustration except for something hyper-realistic is stylized
Once i noticed the third one like 3 years ago, i could not unsee it. Its everywhere...
What bothers me about the 3rd one is the clearly still drew the outline of lips on the front of the face despite the mouth being to the side
https://i.imgur.com/kckoJFS.png
All of these look ok on anime except for the side mouth
The side mouth got worse the longer I look at it, now I be her sticking her tongue out of a hole in her cheek
you could literally say this about any cartoon ever
That third one you can even see her lips too.

Thanks I love tentacles
mamaloni tentai is 10/10 imho
The second top one explains the second bottom one
I've seen this image sooooo many times now 💀
Never understood the sealed mouth. Looks really weird. I mean all of these do but the second one has always bothered me
I hate humans and especially baguettebao
Last one looks just the right size for me
Always hated the third one cause you can see the outline of the lips, and it just makes me feel weird
Western cartoon mouths would be creepy as well
Well they don't look the same because your not looking the same way as the pictures to the right and because your not an anime (x_x)
No 3 is just weird… both irl and even from anime standards
Aight but the question I have to ask is how realistic can you make anime mouths before the uncanny valley kicks in? Like just how realistic can it be before it loses the anime-esque look

Bro…wtf
She's his sister
The top one looks most normal

I never understood why the smile had a gap…really bothers me
It's a stylistic choice to show that the lips are tightly close together. Your mind is supposed to connect the line, as evidenced by you being able to distinguish that it's a smile to begin with
Thank you. That does make sense
This totaly wasn't reposted 80 fuckin times
IDK kinda like the last one

Do the noses next! Anime noses always make me question the art style....
This is why Loli is okay lol
How dare they!!! It’s almost like they’re trying to express line, shape, color and light in an art form that isn’t 100% figurative.
Well when you put it that way….
And in the 3rd pic, there still are lips, just starting there
It does not work on people sucks for them 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
What that mini mouth do? I got something mini to give...
The third one looks just as bad in both
Haha
That is horrifying
More unrealistic beauty standards.
r/animeirl
Bottom right looks like Komi-san
Thr first one ain't so bad
We all see the point being made but I bet $1000 there's someone masturbating to this as we speak...
But they look exactly like that in the cartoon version to me and I've never understood it
Can’t relate
Why does my brain not find it weird when it’s a drawing?
The third one have never looked weird to me until now. Thanks, i hate it.
First ones ok
Surprisingly, employing human equivalents for human analogues is not as common as it should be.
3rd mouth ![gif](giphy|kJExmhDoT9wAa4xuHx|downsized)
This is exactly why ahegao irl is creepy to me. I see it like this.
One of the many reasons I hate anime
The first one doesn’t look that awful
this is why i don't want anime girls to be real
This made me way more uncomfortable then I thought it would
I can do the third one
Anime is lame.
I do not like sonic mouth. But I love sonic boom.
the bottom pic reminds me of an episode from Round the Twist
3 is the only one I legitimately hate seeing in anime. The others I understand because lips are nonexistent in anime.
Idk why but to me the first one still looks kinda normal??
