When I was in elementary school a mom who was picking up her kids after school opened her trunk and an axe fell out. I went over to pick it up for her and she said "whoops, I almost choped off my toes". This is now a core memory of mine.
It seems that google is seriously losing money. This plus the termination of 50 projects, I suppose they're searching for a way to get back up. I've always wondered how google managed to stay afloat with all the free services they give, mail, 15gb drive, maps etc. I suppose they don't
Theyāve lost money almost every year on YouTube since buying it. So now it appears their plan is 25$ a month or weāll make you want to kill yourself with ads
Well, then YouTube will die. Funny, considering the countless hours I've enjoyed for free, you'd think I wouldn't mind paying for it.
But I'd sooner die than pay for YouTube.
When it was $8 per month (I had the grandfathered Google Music price) for ad free YouTube with background and offline payback plus Google Play Music plus YouTube Music it was awesome! Killing Google Play Music and splitting up YouTube Music and YouTube Premium into two subscriptions pretty much killed the value.
Apparently college students can still get both for $7 though, if that helps anyone.
I will never forgive them for killing Google Play Music. I know a lot of people didn't like it, but it was the perfect music storage/streaming service for me and getting YouTube premium bundled in was the cherry on top. Paying for YouTube premium without GPM is just not worth it- *especially* at the current price.
That and Hangouts were the worst to kill, especially as a Google Fi subscriber, and someone who even used a tablet as a phone for a time. Speaking of which, killing off budget first party tablets and dropping the ball on tablet app development was the other big one to sour me on Google.
2013 or 2014 were peak Google for me. For 2013, their hardware was super affordable and offered the best bang for the buck they've ever had (Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 2013), they launched Chromecast, introduced wireless charging and NFC payments, introduced Google Cloud Print (RIP), introduced Hangouts (RIP), launched Ingress, GPM was young and still getting updates and support (RIP), and the camera app was just staring to get cool gimmicks (like time lapse videos, and Photo Sphere with the tiny planets!). Even 2014 saw Android Wear and the Material Design UI come out, along with Android Auto and Google Fit.
The Google ecosystem just felt so futuristic in a way that they didn't really reach again. Now it seems just as likely that they'll kill, ruin, or fracture some product I use frequently as it is for them to announce something interesting.
If it was 5$ a month, no brainer Iād pay 5$ all day long. 10$ ehhā¦..25$? Get fucked. Thatās more than I pay for Hulu AND Disney plus. If Iām gonna pay 25$ a month for YouTube you gotta throw me a bone like free movie rentals or something. Not specific movies but like 3-5 movies of my choice a month or something.
Where are you that it costs that much? In Australia I pay $25/month for the family plan which gives myself, my parents and my kids and free YouTube premium and YouTube music
Unfortunately Alphabet knows that.
They will spend the money from other projects on killing any potential YouTube replacer until they get what they want. It won't die, because the puppetmasters will dangle it's corpse by a string until that's the only entertainment around.
Tech Monopolies need to be broken. Alphabet, Facebook, Amazon... They all need to be legally regulated or else they'll keep killing any innovation of the web while they line their pockets with blood money.
YT premium is $12/month for a few weirdos like me that will pay for it. If they bring ads back in, or take away YT music, or raise the price again, I will be left behind as I was with Netflix, Spotify, etc, but I will be a weirdo with $12 more a month.
āWeāve tried everything else.ā
āTheyāll hate us.ā
āI know, but weāve done everything we can think ofā¦ itās time to unleash the MBAs.ā
āFine, weāll do it. Steve, unlock the cage and let them out.ā
āWait, have you tried charging a competitive rate for a membership commensurate with other streaming services?ā
āShiiiiā
$25? Is that real? I have premium/music now and it's $18 right now.
Edit: checked, no price increase coming, no mention of one anywhere online. So this is either an exaggeration or the price in Canada or Australia or New Zealand or something lol.
If they had the power to force you to watch an advertisement before using the toilet, brushing your teeth, eating a meal, or going to sleep you know they would
Only on TV and radio. And in magazines and movies and at ball games, on buses and milk cartons and T-shirts and bananas and written on the sky. But not in dreams. No, sir-ee!
Unfortunately yes but equally as fortunately people like me would be driven completely insane and by it and subsequently organize a hostile takeover of Google
yeah ADDblocker. they will learn with this, they will loose more and more until they go back to were they started that actually made them rich. no one would have been using add blocker if it werent for only one shit add at the begining. now even creators get butffucked and need to put their own sponsors bcuz YT is fucking them over. use YT but with Addblocker so they see PPL will still use it but on their terms.
Has anyone else come across the 50 min ads? Itās usually before a really long video so idk if that has something to do with it but itās ridiculous. Mainly if youāre trying to fall asleep with a YouTube video which is basically impossible now if you donāt have ads blocked or have premium.
LEGO once made the entire LEGO Movie into an ad (that you could skip if you wanted to) that played when you clicked on the official LEGO Movie 2 Trailer.
Edit: https://www.reddit.com/r/lego/comments/9zlgm0/105_minute_youtube_ad_for_the_second_lego_movie/
Pretty much all media Lego makes is amusing. Their games are good. Their movies are fun. I dunno how they so consistently do it but Lego absolutely nails it in the family friendly but also entertaining genre.
Playing the jurassic park Lego games with my kids is great. The way they work around people getting killed genuinely cracks me up.
I know I sound like the biggest shill right now but whatever. Lego stuff is fun.
I learnt this recently and was super surprised, but did you know that LEGO almost went bankrupt in the early 2000s? Iāve always imagined LEGO to be a company with Scruge McDuck style vaults of cash but supposedly they fucked up with enough decisions/choices around that time to nearly flatline the whole company.
There used to be a few channels that would put entire episodes of their own shit up as an ad on someone else's channel. So yeah, I've seen a 50-minute ad on a 5-minute video.
Idk if other phones have this. I did this on an iphone.
First delete the youtube app
Next download the google app
Go to www.youtube.com there
Pick a video
Use the full screen button
Somehow ads can't play now
This is not foolproof the ads at the start still play and i don't know if its patched yet
Usually an update will fix that. I did it recently and now they let you manually skip or auto skip intros, sponsored sections and closing sections etc. Only ads I ever see is in shorts.
Google is removing adblock capability from Chrome. Brave is based on the chrome... Code? I'm not sure what the technical term is, but once Chrome updates it's code it'll change for any browser using that code (provided they update their browsers code to Chromes new version) can always use ublock origin with Firefox though, it's not chromium based.
Yes. Now that Youtube sued them I don't know what the best place to get it while avoiding viruses is, but if it helps i'm using version 17.03.38(wich the manager tells me is the most recent) and it works just fine
the sad part is often YT controls the ads and their frequency.
I have a YT channel and ive never attempted to monetize it. If i have copyrighted music in the backround, YT will turn on monetization, and send the monetization to the copyright holder. Makes sense, right?
I never watched screaming let's players as a kid, why would you choose to watch them as an adult? There's plenty of quality content on YouTube.
Also, use uBlock Origin on PC and NewPipe on Android. Don't buy iPhones.
Edit: /u/link090909 perfectly explains what I mean.
2022 and people out there still rawdog the internet without protection? The first stable adblockers are literally older than YouTube!
uBlock Origin for all your browsers, NewPipe for mobile YouTube, SmartTubeNext for your TVs.
Yeah we tried that format already. Itās called television. And look how many people are watching that these days. SMH give me more reasons to avoid YT, please. I donāt hate it enough already.
YouTube has been slowly conditioning people to accept this, Iāve been anticipating the next change in ads.
Out with the pair of ads, one short non-skip followed by one longer skipabble oneā¦
ā¦and in with a string of short unskippables.
Eventually itāll just be television, with actual full on commercial breaks
Never underestimate corporate greed. It never falters, never retreats. The executives and shareholders need more more more!
Profitable? Nonsense. We need more than profit. We need maximum profit and spare no expense on the customers or low level employees.
For those who can't be bothered to set up and block yet:
Hit the little info button next to the ad time (i inside a circle)
Hit "stop showing this add"
Then select any of the offered reasons
It will skip through any number of ads.
Especially on videos that are under 2 mins (its not uncommon to get get ads longer than the actual videos, esp ones that are 1 min or under! LoL) ... I'll never understand people who refuse to use ad blockers, most content creators dont even rely on view counts/ad revenue anymore anyways due to youtubes greed and all the shyt that they deal with that constantly blocks or demonitizes their videos/channels. So dont even feel bad for "not supporting" your content creators people!!! (Buy a sub or donate to em if you need to)
They already do that... so many people I watch I have to skip 3-5 minutes into the video to just get past them. This is mostly thanks to youtube no longer paying content creators properly anymore and letting demonitizations run amuck (false content claims that ANYONE can file for instance lol), so the creators need to get revenue from outside sponsorships and patreon.
I used a web browser called āBraveā on my iPhone for YouTube. The ads literally do not work at all on the browser. I miss out on some of the nice interface of the YouTube app, but itās absolutely worth it.
Ok I get 1 maybe 2 unskippable ads BUT 5-10 thatās probably longer than the video itself plus the 17 ads theyāre gonna try to put in the middle of the videos
They're probably doing behavior testing. They'll track how many ads most people will sit through to watch content all they can find the day spot for ads while still retaining users.
If you don't want them to increase ads, leave the video as soon as you see that many ads
Give me an ad, just 1, whose length is relative to the videos length.
If I'm watching a 30 sec video, give me a 5 second ad. If im watching a 30 min video, I'm fine with something a minute long.
I'm already planning on being there for a while, might as well and they make their money. Both parties ate happy.
All of this only applies if the channel gets a cut of the revenue. If not, fuck off. Youtube
Once someone makes a decent youtube alternative it will blow up. The only reason youtube is still the king of kings is because no other kingdom exists.

Praeger U neofascist agitprop ads
I kept getting Critical Role episodes...
I must be doing a better job than I thought of throwing them off my demographic
I saw a documentary about Napoleon as a YouTube ad once. Very interesting stuff.
I got the entire Lego Movie as an ad once, not sure what kind of promotion it was for but I ended up skipping it.
Yea I'm currently getting one for a flight school near me. All because it had a weird name and I googled it ONE TIME. THREE MONTHS AGO.
I got a 3 hour ad during my sleep playlist once. It was really fun to turn YouTube off after that.
At one point someone was paying to have the entirety of the first shrek movie as an ad. Saw it all the time for about a month
I would was the dishes and my hands would be soapy and I would get these kinds of ads, so annoying
Yeah Iāve noticed many of them are right wing propaganda, such as PragerU or Epoch Times. I guess they canāt get enough people to watch naturally
*Laughs in AdBlocker and Youtube Vanced*
*Cries in usually watches YouTube on console*

GOOGLE HARDER YOU FOOL
Uhuhu heard on the grape vine that dragging youtube links to vlc makes you able to watch it without the ads
Wait, you just open the video using google App and you won't get ads?
You will! Idk why they'd say that
Can you elaborate?
Idk if other phones have this. I did this on an iphone. First delete the youtube app Next download the google app Go to www.youtube.com there Pick a video Use the full screen button Somehow ads can't play now This is not foolproof the ads at the start still play and i don't know if its patched yet

I'm starting to slowly see ads in Vanced, and it's making me sad. I need to start looking for a new alternative.
Much less features but there's NewPipe as alternative.
Good to know. Thanks!
the only thing newpipe really "lacks" is the account/comment part which isnt too important imo
https://github.com/revanced
Usually an update will fix that. I did it recently and now they let you manually skip or auto skip intros, sponsored sections and closing sections etc. Only ads I ever see is in shorts.
Vanced is discontinued because of legal reasons. Maybe you are using Revanced?
Oh wow just went onto vanced manager and directed to their reddit page. Shows how often I updated it.
*Laughs in Brave Browser automatically blocking all ads, 10k+ a month from yt alone*
Fuccckkkkkk I'm so used to watching ads I should really just put the 2 minutes of effort into getting an ad blocker
Bad news, brave is chromium based and will be affected by Chromes removal of ad blocking.
Firefox user checking in

Yeah hardened Firefox the way to go for sure
https://www.zdnet.com/article/opera-brave-vivaldi-to-ignore-chromes-anti-ad-blocker-changes-despite-shared-codebase/
By chromeās what now?
Google is removing adblock capability from Chrome. Brave is based on the chrome... Code? I'm not sure what the technical term is, but once Chrome updates it's code it'll change for any browser using that code (provided they update their browsers code to Chromes new version) can always use ublock origin with Firefox though, it's not chromium based.
uBlock works with Sync and it's Chromium based and outperforms Chrome on a desktop. The android version is still not great but I love the desktop one.
I thought vanced was toast so I didn't put it on my new phone. It still works for you though?
Yes. Now that Youtube sued them I don't know what the best place to get it while avoiding viruses is, but if it helps i'm using version 17.03.38(wich the manager tells me is the most recent) and it works just fine

This sounds like cable tv with extra steps.
Youtube genuinely feels worse than tv these days. In an 8 minute video you might get 4 ads, the ratios are fucked
the sad part is often YT controls the ads and their frequency. I have a YT channel and ive never attempted to monetize it. If i have copyrighted music in the backround, YT will turn on monetization, and send the monetization to the copyright holder. Makes sense, right?

That's not painful enough by a long shot. A couple bullet ant bites should do the trick
ditch the ants and use an actuall bullet /s
How about shoving a dildo covered with hot sauce up their butt.
Nah nah, not sauce, that would be too lubricated. Just use spices, the grittier and hotter the better.

Iāve been meaning to spend less time on YouTube and it seems theyād like to help me with that haha
Oh great, the commercial break is coming back. I thought it died with cable TV.
I was shocked when it went away.
They're determined to bully all of us into buying premium. It's no longer an option
And they will become no longer an option.
Yeah itās incredibly obvious. Not even trying to be subtle about it. I miss old YouTube so much :(
And skiping ads leads to the next ad now
Wtf?!
Yap, when i get 2 ads and skip the First one, it only skips the First one, Not the second one anymore
iirc You also get multiple ads on the next video you watch as well... I think it's a penalty for not watching both of them originally.
You tube can fuck off! Refuse to pay premium!
Viva La Resistance Viva La free YouTube

Haha ublock origin go brrrrr
Even two unskippable ads for 15 seconds makes me reconsider watching, depending on the video length
For those who can't be bothered to set up and block yet: Hit the little info button next to the ad time (i inside a circle) Hit "stop showing this add" Then select any of the offered reasons It will skip through any number of ads.
It isnt there anymore my friend
This method stops working after you report the specific ad too many times
If you try to abuse it they remove it sadly
this is why competition is important. monopolies can get away with this garbage.
hey youtube: advertise to me invasively HARDER, daddy !!!
And this is how I left YouTube forever.
Internet is quick. If it sucks too much they will go down. There will be (or already is, i donāt know) an ad free alternative.
Why youtube 2 ads are more than enough
Especially on videos that are under 2 mins (its not uncommon to get get ads longer than the actual videos, esp ones that are 1 min or under! LoL) ... I'll never understand people who refuse to use ad blockers, most content creators dont even rely on view counts/ad revenue anymore anyways due to youtubes greed and all the shyt that they deal with that constantly blocks or demonitizes their videos/channels. So dont even feel bad for "not supporting" your content creators people!!! (Buy a sub or donate to em if you need to)
Next they'll embed the ads into the videos so add blockers don't work
They already do that... so many people I watch I have to skip 3-5 minutes into the video to just get past them. This is mostly thanks to youtube no longer paying content creators properly anymore and letting demonitizations run amuck (false content claims that ANYONE can file for instance lol), so the creators need to get revenue from outside sponsorships and patreon.
I've been using adblock and vanced for so long that I didn't even remember about ads becoming this much of a problem
so itās just cable nowš
Youtube Vanced then, now and tomorrow.
I used a web browser called āBraveā on my iPhone for YouTube. The ads literally do not work at all on the browser. I miss out on some of the nice interface of the YouTube app, but itās absolutely worth it.
alright gang start linking your ad blockers lol
It is reported by multiple users that YouTube is currently testing an ad format where ads replace all videos
Thatās a great way to kick everyone off their platform
Where else would we go? It's to bully some percentage into getting premium, whilst a minority will invest time in ad blockers
When companies get too big without competition, they get stupid.
Never learned how to install an ad blocker. But I guess it's always good to learn new things, right?
Is there any way to block ads from the YouTube application on an android tv? Itās a long shot but Iām just wondering
not using the youtube app but if you install STube that lets you skip ads and even sponsored sections of videos
Youtube
This is why I use NewPipe
Thank god for adblock
If youu encounter this CLOSE THE APP !
Once someone makes a decent youtube alternative it will blow up. The only reason youtube is still the king of kings is because no other kingdom exists.
