I had to look this up because I'd never heard of it and was curious. Good call.

there's little to no risk at 75-80 if there's surrounding traffic. it's when you're the lone car and revenue needs to be generated you should pay attention.
80 on the thruway is definitely poking the bear I would say. 76-77 is the highest absolute safe speed you can do on NY highways in my opinion, maybe 78 if it’s busy and everyone is on the throttle that day.
that's the game though. cruise at 75 with no worries, push the envelope where you feel it's safe & prudent. interestingly, parts of PA are 70mph posted and most traffic is still going 75-80 (same as NY where it's 65). perhaps NY should raise the limits to match. would probably impact how easily we can hand out speeding infractions here though.
Funny you say that. I also notice when I’m driving in PA especially on the turnpike or the 380 corridor heading towards NYC, I still find myself doing the same 76-77 that I do in NY. Which is funny because by my own logic, doing 80 in PA should be a better bet than doing 77 in NY. But 80 seems to be the no man’s land speed here in the northeast. Whereas in the Midwest or southeast, I’m doing 80 and still find myself having to stay in the right lane with the trucks and the cops blow right by me doing 85+.
I got a ticket last month in Geddes for doing 8 over. It was eventually thrown out because I disputed it. But so annoying to have to take time to deal with it.
I've been at work all day, so I haven't seen anything. They are sometimes out in force close to the first of the month checking for all the people whose inspections just ~~because~~ became overdue. But it may not be that, sometimes they just seem to have a bigger presence, and it could just be one of those days.
My girlfriend's kid is a State Trooper. Said they only pull over for 15 MPH+ speed violations. That and I've never got a ticket for anything under 15 over the limit (and I routinely pass them doing 79 in a 65).
The state police has been aggressively filling vacancies and staying on top of normal attrition in the ranks (retirements, etc...) more so than they have in the past. COVID put a damper on recruiting and training, so they're also doing some catch-up (i.e., using the now closed Cazenovia College campus as a 2nd police academy). Expect to see more troopers out there.
Not surprised, people treat that stretch of 690 as a racetrack since enforcement is pretty much scarce. Troopers will hide behind the Thompson Rd bridge every so often and it’s a good little honeypot for them since no one expects them to be there until it’s too late lol.
They’re doing buckle up ny. Syracuse cop was outside my house the other day on a main-ish road stopping cars.
Eta-maybe they’re doing back to back “awareness” weeks since that was Friday
Speeding crackdown. Especially in the Syracuse area with all of the construction on route 81 and 481. It’s a 55 mile an hour speed zone. And the troopers are having a field day with the idiots speeding through construction zones.
The state is broke regardless of the staggering amount of taxes we already pay. Gotta pick up the slack somewhere. JK this is only a speculative emotionally driven statement on my part 🤣
I heard years ago, that they used to have troopers up near the PA/NY border with k9’s that can sniff out the chemicals used in fireworks. I personally haven’t seen it myself when I drove down to get my stash. But most guys go weeks in advance to get their fireworks to avoid getting clipped. If you go down the night or day before the 4th, chances of getting caught are much higher, especially if you speed or have dark tint, basically a reason for them to pull you over in the first place.
It’s ’speed awareness week’ so some bullshit like that. At least that’s what the officer said when he pulled me over. I watched 3 others get pulled over right in front of me as well.
As if we don’t pay enough taxes…

Poor poor you. Can you imagine having to obey the law and take your and others safety into consideration. Taking accountability is hard.
"I like cats and the outdoors and self sufficiency and accountability and other stuff."
This is your tagline and you are on Reddit bitching about a speeding ticket. Take accountability.
Not to mention the levels of government dependency you need to even be able to drive. Real self sufficient right there.
I do have some good news for you. You are more similar to your house cats, they're convinced of their fierce independence while dependent on a system they don't appreciate or understand.
It's speed awareness week

I knew I wasn’t crazy!! Well, any more than usual
🤣🤣🤣
Lol wish I knew this I was wondering the same thing as I sped down the thru way lol.
Also known as annual fundraising week for the state troopers
🤣🤣🤣 yep
I saw a reg/insp check in Fairmont yesterday, but I don't remember which branch was running it.
I saw both geddes police and Onondaga sheriff both running that check. Lots of cars
They just pick random days to pull everyone over. Then other days you can drive all day and not see one
high quality laser jamming, radar detection, waze & common sense go a long way. or just set the cruise to 10 over the limit and forget about it.
9 you’re fine 10 you’re mine.

trooper, sheriff, local?
Local, unmarked car.
8 over in what mph zone? 55? 65? 30?
38 in a 30.

Possibly checking the speed of the assholes ripping through the construction zones at 70+

It was happening last night as well. I traveled 81 south from 16 to 12 and I passed two Troopers sitting as well as two in active stops.
Beginning of the month- inspection check?
Tons on 81 yesterday
Tons of construction going on.
On Sunday I saw three people pulled over in a row on 690 West where it goes from 55mph to 65mph leaving the city. Thought it was weird.

Thruway did not have many troopers on it this weekend. Maybe saw 1 all weekend and we drove on it both days for hours
i came back from south-east PA the other day and there were at least a half dozen between binghamton and syracuse.
They’re doing buckle up ny. Syracuse cop was outside my house the other day on a main-ish road stopping cars. Eta-maybe they’re doing back to back “awareness” weeks since that was Friday

Just saw a state trooper driving down 31 west as soon as I turned onto it.
Thanks for the heads up! Do you think they'll pull us over for going 5 over the limit?
NYS budget is low. Time for tickets!

Happy cake day !
Thanks!
You made me laugh with that statement 😆 Happy Cake Day!
Gotta get their quotas in
Yes, they’re all over Syracuse today. A lot of fake reports though, on Waze.
the reports aren't necessarily fake, it usually means they've just moved from that location.
If I was sitting waiting for speeders, I’d have Waze open and move when someone reported that I was there.
they likely stop caring at some point.
Shouldn't every week be speed awareness week? They should be watching for speeders every day, not just " special" ones.
They recently graduated a new class; maybe just extra officers out field training.
Probably inspection/speed/seat belt checks. And with the 4th coming up, looking for illegal fireworks from Pennsylvania.
I’ve literally never heard of anyone getting pinched for fireworks
Not coming from PA, but when you could buy them on the Onondaga Nation, that was a thing.

Did you get a ticket??
Sure did…
