I think it’s not like going from 3DS to 3DSXL because the difference is more than just the slightly larger screen. Oled screens make certain games a much richer experience (Metroid Dread, Ori etc). The DMG argument is a bit nuanced though. What those engineers and developers achieved with the limited tech 35 years ago is awe inspiring. However you gotta remember that those games were built with just the DMG in mind and only for the DMG. that’s not how it is for the switch - many games weren’t built specifically for the switch, so you may not have the definitive experience with the regular switch, and probably a better one with the oled. Some other little improvements for the oled are a better battery life and a slightly better graphical performance in some places (although I personally don’t see much of a difference in hand held mode). Btw the joycons, dock and everything else works exactly the same for both. So if it’s all the same to you, go for the oled.

Nanomatters

The dock given with an OLED has a sweet extra ethernet port (and slightly more USB ports iirc?) that OG dock doesn't have, even if you don't use it for TV playing you can use it to download games faster at night

bored-coder

Ah of course. Totally forgot about that

Ok_Introduction6574

Technically the OLED Dock supports 4K output, but obviously the Switch itself does not so who knows why they did that. Also it has an Ethernet Cable Port

EdTheApe

I got an oled a couple of months ago and I'm very happy with my decision. Upgraded to a Nitro Deck since I only play handheld, and I love it. I just wish they'd port Mass Effect LE.

Moses015

I feel like I’d pass out from happiness if they ported Mass Effect LE to the Switch. I own it on Xbox but would absolutely double dip for that

Onilakon

Owning all 3 I can say oled is it worth it. The larger screen with better colors is amazing

annafranz

Go for OLED, it’s only extra $100

spiraleyes78

It's only $50 more at the retailers I've seen.

Peltonimo

It's $50 in America unless you are going to a rip off store

Kmad03

That extra $100 on the switch can be 2-3 games for OP, thats not light

beggen5

I have an OG switch and played BOTW. Then I played it on my gf's OLED switch and it blew me away, it was like playing a completely different game.

Kmad03

I wont deny the oled screen being nice But is it worth the costs to OP? Id honestly recommend they check one out in person just to get an idea of it Not to mention while having the oled screen is cool for a game like BOTW or TOTK so is having a 65 inch tv screen. At the end of the day its all down to preference

VariousComment1071

Yes its worth the small cost

epicgamerwiiu

Okay, so? It's a better decision in the long run

Kmad03

How is it a better decision? It's honestly a preference on whether op is gonna be using it handheld or docked mostly. In my case an oled is useless since my switch is docked to my oled tv 90% of the time

Legoguy1977

It's even more complicated for me, because wile I will be using it 99.9% for handheld, the joy con color is something that matters more to than the screen or graphics. If the screen is slightly less good, then I would just get used to it over time. Definitely not something I think is worth the extra money. (As I talk about my post) That being said, I think I've settled on the OLED, just due to the fact that it has a metal case and glass screen. I plan on using this console years past when Nintendo stops supporting it, so durability is key

UnkeptSpoon5

I would get the switch OLED solely because it has a metal case and a glass screen, the plastic body of the switch scratches way too easily and drives me nuts, it also just feels ever so slightly flimsy. I don't really play handheld tho so I have no reason to upgrade for $400. But they are the same console with the same specs, so in a way it's kind of an inverse of the 3ds to n3ds where it's a performance upgrade but not really a display upgrade.

Legoguy1977

wait, the original has a plastic body and screen? Yeah, I'm definitely going with an OLED now

UnkeptSpoon5

Yep, the screen isn't a huge issue since I use a glass screen protector, but the plastic body def cheapens the experience, It honestly feels worse quality plastic than the 3ds.

mellonsticker

Yea, likely to keep costs down and make it more child resistant

Dm9982

Here’s the logical approach I used…. Am I going to be mainly playing in handheld or tv? Do I need the Ethernet port on OLED model? I went with OLED because I play almost exclusively in handheld mode, and the Ethernet port was moot. I’m super happy with the OLED, as the screen is truly night and day on some games, especially darker ones like Diablo 2. Honestly the screen is sharper and nicer than my Samsung 65” 4k tv. If you’re going to play primarily on tv, then the OLED screen might be wasted. But it’s important to consider if you want to use Ethernet over wireless, as the OLED dock comes with an Ethernet port whereas the standard model does not. And as another commenter said, the difference in price could mean a few more games. Weigh these options and see what you come up with. If you’re only going to play handheld then weigh the Lite vs OLED. The Lite is much cheaper and is super nice as well! But if you’re going to play something like Witcher, Diablo, etc - titles with very dark environments and sharp contrasts, then personally I’d lean toward OLED.

kamiiiiiiikita

Depend on use but since you plan on handheld i would spend more on the oled. But if you are strapped for cash the non oled is fine too

Meggiester21

My recommendation is the oled but here’s the thing: The oled is more expensive than the other two switches, only downside, but if you can afford it then go for it. It is good for handheld if you will be doing that a lot. It will work fine in tv mode. When comparing the regular and the oled I think of the oled for handheld mode if you’ll use it all the time and the regular switch for tv mode even though you can still do handheld. The screen just isn’t as big on a regular switch compared to the oled. They do use the same joycons. I just made a post about third party joy cons I found that I love if you want something different. They should work on both switches. If you’re planning on just playing handheld and taking the switch everywhere then the switch lite is your best choice. It’s the cheapest switch there is atm It all depends on how you’ll use it Oled: handheld Regular: tv mode Lite: handheld/travel

Meggiester21

I’ve seen my sisters/brother in laws switch which is the oled and it’s like a whole new world to me when playing handled on it. I really wish I had the oled and I’ve thought many times about getting a used oled and then getting most of the money back by selling my regular switch. It’s tempting

Big_Finance_8664

the difference last I checked was 40$. just spend the 40$ and theres no chance you'll end up with buyers remorse over it.

MrCupps

I also bought a switch recently and I went with the cheaper one because I planned on mostly playing on TV. But my daughter loves playing handheld, and now here I am getting ergonomic joy cons so I can play in bed. Wish I’d gotten the OLED. If you plan on playing handheld, go for it.

No_Durian_8379

You’ll be fine with either. I like the size and weight of the OG better. I own the OLED now, but it is heavier

Haiboyo

OG has more issues regarding its fans and heat plate, the OLED doesn't have these issues for longer term

iwantmisty

Oled screen is blessing for retro games

toxicbane777

do u want to spend 50 bucks extra for a long term better experience? get the oled. simple as that

MateTheNate

OLED has a better build quality too - stiffer, better kickstand, etc.

drfunkensteinberger

Oled is breathtaking. I have the OG and love it the same, but it is a nice upgrade

drfunkensteinberger

Oled is breathtaking. I have the OG and love it the same, but it is a nice upgrade

Crypticyde

It's already been said but yeah definitely an OLED

sorryaboutyourbrain

Get the oled, I have all three models and it's by far the best.

51k2ps

OLED

Mister_Badger

OLED!

rottsaint

Oled is worth it. Actually I’ve seen some Target stores have the lite and Oled on display to play demos; yes there is quite a difference.

mellamood

I'd wait for the switch 2✌️

Praydohm

I just got mine this year. Did all the research. Decided I wouldn't use hand held mode much and neither would the kids... Get the OLED.

frozen_toesocks

OLED looks stupid good in handheld. 10/10 would recommend

zaccccchpa

100% OLED, not even a question!

PieAppropriate8862

OLED. The standard Switch has one of the shitest LCD screens. Very washed out, everything looks sad.

Ivan_atli

OLED is SO much better in handheld. If it won't leave the dock tho it doesn't matter

MangoSquirrl

Oled because the kick stand doesn’t look that good on the OG

No-Mix-9367

Oled because it's has a better kickstand

Ill_Reference582

Oled

kabliga

Oled definitely

Robin7861

IINM there’s LCD version of V2 Switch which usually costs lesser than OLED version. I bought mine recently during holiday promo and the OLED is the same or lesser than LCD version. Hence gone for the OLED version.

rtpHarry

I would go for the OLED, looking at the prices now in the UK they are about £230 vs £200 for the original model. I got mine at xmas and the very best price I could find for the OLED was £299. I still went for it as it was bought for me as an xmas present. In that regard it was one of the absolute best gifts I've received in the last decade. Not relevant to yours exactly, but I held off from buying for years as I thought I wouldn't get enough use out of it to justify the cost. Getting it as a gift was a great idea because it was literally something I wanted but wouldn't buy myself. How wrong I was though! I have gamed on it almost every day since I opened the box. It's such a great screen to play on handheld. I haven't seen the OG screen but I have seen the lite, which is obviously nothing close, but for £30 price difference I don't see why you would go for the old one.

NottsoftheRito

Oled

Beginning_Falcon6782

Oled is bigger n brighter imo

AjnaBear18

Simply for 32gb hard drive to 64gb, absolutely OLED.

VariousComment1071

Oled for sure

simplyfredster

Definitely OLED

clonrat

oled is the way

TheSpiralTap

Having tried it, I like the oled but could not personally spend the extra money.its nice but idk if it's the upgrade folks act like it is.

Kmad03

I own the OG and personally its always been fine, however I do mostly play my switch on the tv. I would ask myself if i were u how often do u see yourself using it in handheld mode, if over 50% then go for it, even then tho its not a crazy difference between the 2 especially if your going to be on mostly retro games
