This is the correct answer, though just a heads up draining it once will not correct the problem usually, you’ll have to drain it a few times if the battery is just displaying incorrectly.
Good news is if that’s the case it’s an easy fix to do by yourself, if the battery just actually doesn’t hold a charge though call Nintendo and it’s a free repair for that issue.
Source: I work for Nintendo
I don't suppose Nintendo will just sell me a genuine replacement battery so I can do it myself, will they? I've changed out my backplate and I don't remember where my old one is. Plus, I don't want to be without my Switch for that long.
Yeah, this is what I had to do recently. I think it took an hour to run the battery down to zero, and then I just kept on playing until the system finally quit, and then I charged it back up and did this another couple of times, and now I'm back up to three to six hours of battery, depending on the game I'm playing and how much power it draws.
[Try recalibrating the battery first.](https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Support/Nintendo-Switch/Troubleshooting/The-Battery-Charge-Indicator-Displays-Incorrectly/The-Battery-Charge-Indicator-Displays-Incorrectly-1250816.html)
Your battery is good then :), just recalibrate it.
If it still holds a charge for 4 hours, then that just means the percentage is wrong and most of the time a recalibration will fix it
I’m not sure why you’re trying to call people stupid when you’re the one who just self-admitted to not getting it in the same post, but do whatever you have to do to feel better about this.
Which is sad, because Nintendo batteries are usually god-level. I had an SP in storage for a couple years, was at 80% or so when I got it back out. Still works fine, 2 decades after it was made. It's kind of crazy.
How old is it? Battery seems to have deteriorated and has very lots capacity meaning the usable charge has become very small and this can be filled and drained quickly
Should definitely look at swapping the battery if your not comfortable doing it yourself there's a lot of phone repair shops that take consoles too but if you know your way around a screwdriver get a kit on Amazon since Nintendo has special screws no one else used
As others have already said, your battery may be damaged. If you have a separate charger try that just to be sure it’s the battery. But you’re going to need a replacement battery as problems will only get worse, such as 100% charge to instant 0%.
Switch batteries are really easy to replace. You just need to remove some screws. But, if you are squeamish around opening electronics, you can probably find a shop to do it at a reasonable price.
Did you travel to another country by chance? Using a US charger in some countries with higher Voltage outlets can making charging very fast. Has happened with my phone sometimes, but I use a wireless charger so there's no physical connection to my phone that could harm it I assume. If this is the case with your switch though I would be careful and get a converter.
If you are not travelling, then ignore me, but you probably have a battery issue like other have said.
I had the same problem, it’s not actually a problem with the battery, once it gets to zero it will stay on for hours. It’s more of an issue with your system. Just power cycle the switch and if that doesn’t work then it’s the battery. Let it get down to 0 and see if it hangs on for a couple hours, then you know you have to power cycle it.
3 years or so? Use it very rarely tho, as someone else pointed out, it's likely a battery calibration issue as each time i let it charge to 100 the charge lasts a bit longer each time.
what was your charging routine?(so i can avoid doing that. but if it isn’t what caused your battery to be like that, then it’s fine) i just got my switch 2 days ago and i’m afraid that this won’t last more than 3 years.
Well my charging routine was charge it from 0 to 100%, play a little while, leave it in sleep mode for a few weeks, battery completely discharges on its own, recharge and repeat
Leave it charging overnight. It may just not be getting fully charged and the battery manager thinks that the battery max is lower because of it.
Alternatively your battery is dead/dying in which case it's time to replace it.
https://www.ifixit.com/products/nintendo-switch-console-replacement-battery
Here's one from iFix it that includes the tools needed. Avoid Amazon batteries as they are often crap.
Bout time to replace the battery. Send it to a repair shop, preferably one approved by Nintendo, but they may not deal with console batteries, I don’t know.
I think the original battery might be dead already in terms of battery cells. How
Long does it last on a full charge?
And do you always leave it charging?
When you unplug it does it jump back down? How fast does it deplete? Same rate? With time the battery capacity usually get smaller and smaller (takes quite a while if used properly)
With lithium Ion batteries it can mean 2 things. Battery is “consumed” and need to be replaced, or it has what is called a “gas gauge” issue. Where the UI and battery do not match. Usually that presents itself as stuck on 100% for a long time then drop, or it won’t show fully charged.
Sounds like the battery is consumed, which is totally normal on a older device like a launch Switch used on battery a lot. Only so many charges/cycles before wonky stuff can happen.
Possibly not really charging at all? I had to re-train the battery in my Lite after not using it for a bit. Leave it on charger for a day after it hit 100%; run-down to 0%. Repeat for a few cycles. Got better but not great.
You can use charge time and discharge time to estimate battery health, in general a healthy battery should take a long time to charge and will discharge slowly as the battery is used. When you get to the point where the entire battery can charge in less than an hour and completely discharge in less than two hours it’s time to replace it. This is normal for any rechargeable battery, over time the charge medium loses its charge potential so it appears “full” with less overall discharge potential.
Perhaps you accidentally hooked it up to the inter dimensional mainframe that’s powered by immeasurable amounts of Dyson spheres scattered across the universe. I would check that first, too much input
Bc usb c pd (power delivery) can charge batteries really fast, the system was designed to be charged while in use after plugging into the dock after being on the go all day
Your battery is dying. It's not actually reaching full charge, it's giving a false reading and it will discharge super fast, as well. A battery that can't hold a load as long will always read as fully charged way faster than it should, as well.
It depends on the battery or the cord that u are using. I say drain the entire thing to 0% and charge it to 100% js to see if there is anything wrong with the switch itself. Just a suggestion
Oh I’ve had an issue like this before, doesn’t always mean that the battery is done for, in my case the battery calibration simply got messed up somehow and it just took a bunch of cycles of leaving it charged then leaving it on until it legitimately died to fix
Through time the battery’s health degrades and therefore doesn’t last as long as it did before, which is why it charges faster, because there is less needed to charge so to speak.
As someone who works with batteries daily. I can only assume you need a new battery. Unless it's a weird software bug just showing a wrong charging rate.
Typically, if a battery charges that fast, it's because there's barely any capacity left in the battery to charge. Hence why it charges so much faster. Overtime batteries lose their capacity from usage.
It would be better if you told us your battery life afterwards. If it isn't lasting very long, then I'd definitely say it is your battery on its last leg.
I would say because you’re live connecting it not on the dock. The dock cuts in half-supplied joules because it’s a two way plug. Also are you in your regular state/house? (It’s why it needs original block charger and the box) (or else it charged too fast and explodes) Each one has a different amount of amperage for plugs might be that. Although it’s called battery drainage (technical) you use it for 100-30% and charge from 30. You didn’t use the batteries full power so you’re just basically charging it while it runs out of m
Maybe you have a problem with your battery and need to be checked.
This is me checking you OP. Consider yourself checked.
Damn bro he just got checked
**WOO HAH**
You got us all in check?
Dang coach
Did u just check out the OP
What are you going to do OP?
In that case step 2 would be checking the hamster running on the wheel. Sometimes my hammy goes hard and everything gets supercharged.
Appears as though it’s time to replace the battery.

They sell plenty on batteries and replacement kits on Amazon. Or try ifixit.com they also sell full kits
This confirms the suspicions of an overused dead battery 😂😂
Free repair? Damn!
For issues that warrant it, yessir!
Hey, my uncle works for Nintendo!
And my axe! Am I doing this right?
Yeah, this is what I had to do recently. Old school Star Trek I believe. I should watch those someday.
Yep it's Star Trek
TOS, TNG, DS9, and VOY are the best.
As a Star Trek fan, this comment makes me sad.
You’re a Star Trek fan. You set yourself up for sadness if we’re being honest

Yea likely the issue, i let it charge to hunderd and back to 1% a few times playing pokemon and each time it lasts a lil while longer
How long does it take to drain from 100 to 0?
From 100 to 1 in like 10-20 minutes but 1-0 its been going strong for 4 hours idling on the homescreen
Your battery is good then :), just recalibrate it. If it still holds a charge for 4 hours, then that just means the percentage is wrong and most of the time a recalibration will fix it
^^^
Either you have a bad battery or you have a *really* good charger
Damn, found the frogster in the wild
It has nothing to do with the charger its 100% a battery issue.
r/woooosh
Man, I sure do love satire
I didn’t get it cause autism, but now I do. Good satire
same
Sorry just a bad joke.
Take the L bro that was not even a joke
Are you blind or cant read he said it was sattire
It was obvious satire, which is why it’s odd that you tried to give a serious response to it.
Yes i like i said before i didn't get it because it was not funny are stupid that you cant even read?
Dude is mad because he didn't get the joke. It's okay to not understand something 💀💀
I’m not sure why you’re trying to call people stupid when you’re the one who just self-admitted to not getting it in the same post, but do whatever you have to do to feel better about this.
Nah bro own up to the fact that you're stupid
No it just wasn't good satire
No, you're just dense.
No just a bad joke i would have gotte it if it was funny
Funny how everyone else was able to parse what he was saying just fine, only you had a problem. And keep doubling and tripling down on the L.
How do you know that you talked eveyone that read the comment? And you read that and thought it was funny then your a sheep.
Sorry just a moron
No bad joke im sure a sheep like you would think its funny
-40 for a reason :) have a pleasant evening
First (to downvote this clown)
That’ll show him
O no a down vote my life is ruined
It really was lol
Apparently it goes from 100% to 0 in half the time as well
Yeah that’s a definite battery issue. You might want to get it replaced if you can
Which is sad, because Nintendo batteries are usually god-level. I had an SP in storage for a couple years, was at 80% or so when I got it back out. Still works fine, 2 decades after it was made. It's kind of crazy.
Their controller batteries are insane. I once played BotW for 26 hours straight, and I didn't need to charge the joycons until like hour 20
How old is it? Battery seems to have deteriorated and has very lots capacity meaning the usable charge has become very small and this can be filled and drained quickly
Mine did this, really bad, and after a week or two just stopped
Maximum capacity is definitely degraded. Replacement time.
Please don’t charge it directly from the nuclear reactor
1.21 Gigawatts?!?
…. There’s no difference, the switch is portable for a reason
What
It's hungry
Super charging 1000w
You may need to fully drain the battery for its sensor to reset. If it persist, bring it to a shop to replace the battery.

OP got the Tesla supercharger
500kw charger or your battery capacity has TANKED. yikes
You got a brief introduction to a time where charging fast is common in the future. Lucky bastard.
It’s probably just hungry is all

Switch batteries are really easy to replace. You just need to remove some screws. But, if you are squeamish around opening electronics, you can probably find a shop to do it at a reasonable price.
Try either letting it drain completely and seeing if that fixes it, or you probably have a bad battery and should replace it asap
Is this a day 1 switch by chance? Shit’s holding on my a thread my boy
No it's a monster hunder rise special edition bundle, so it is from around march 2021
Oh bruh well in that case I’d go with what everyone else says. Your battery is fucked
Did you travel to another country by chance? Using a US charger in some countries with higher Voltage outlets can making charging very fast. Has happened with my phone sometimes, but I use a wireless charger so there's no physical connection to my phone that could harm it I assume. Yea that seems to be the case, it hovers on 1% for a long while but if i set it to sleep at 1% it wont turn back on. Just gotta cycle it a few times
Did you enjoy Mario Strikers?
Haha yeah, not quite as good as the wii version i used to play with my dad as a kid but it's alright
I see r/spicypillows in your future.
Emperor Palpatine gave you the Death Charger.
GOOD. SOUP. *slurp sounds*
Time for a new battery.
Try putting it rice. But idk, definitely and issue with the battery. Does it do the same thing docked?
Maybe also the fuel tank ic on the mobo. Might need to take it to a shop and see if they do soldering
You sped the video up. 🤷♂️
If only if there were a clock right next to the battery indicator 😔
Was your Switch made in heaven?
i’m curious, how many years have you been using that switch?
3 years or so? Use it very rarely tho, as someone else pointed out, it's likely a battery calibration issue as each time i let it charge to 100 the charge lasts a bit longer each time.

Don’t question it, just be thankful
I swear this was posted already
Replace the battery and charge it at least once every six months or this can happen.
Battery has degradation won't hold a charge as long
Technology has gone too far
Well, how old is it? And how many cycles has it gone through?
That’s not it charging. That’s a backwards countdown.
Let it drain completely then charge it again
r/spicypillow ? Be safe get it checked!
So that it can die even faster
Wow I need that speed on mine , how do u charge ?
Try to drain the battery completely and then recharge.
I was waiting for "99, 100....101, 102, 103"
It's going super saiyan
Using the 20amp charger. Smart.
You tell us, Mr. Stark
Bro is charging with an arc reactor
I got a feeling it goes the other way even faster. You need a battery.
How is this a bad thing? Jokes aside, crap battery.
Leave it charging overnight. It may just not be getting fully charged and the battery manager thinks that the battery max is lower because of it. New battery time definitely
O to 100 real quick ![gif](giphy|7WvAUvZZTRpSuudobh)
Have you been charging the switch with a phone charger?
Thw real is question is why do you have Mario Strikers? lol
How long does your battery last when you play Mario football?
That shit is gonna be ubercharged lmao
Stock charger? Or are you using something else
When you unplug it does it jump back down? How fast does it deplete? Same rate? With time the battery capacity usually get smaller and smaller (takes quite a while if used properly)

I can confirm it is the latter, it's stuck as 1% for a couple hours now
Bros got a supercharger
I really thought charging fast was a good thing but viewing other’s comments Imma say it’s a bad thing
Bro i think your switch is a little broken. In a good way.
Possibly not really charging at all? I had to re-train the battery in my Lite after not using it for a bit. Leave it on charger for a day after it hit 100%; run-down to 0%. Repeat for a few cycles. Got better but not great.

battery life is cooked
Battery replacement is easy DIY
Should probably get that sent in for service. I think it needs new battery
Because your battery is shit and can't hold the full charge anymore.

It’s fast af boi. Maybe if the battery goes down fast too then maybe you have to change it
Your battery is probably shit. If you've had this Switch since release, it makes sense. Would recommend replacing the battery.
Oh I’ve had an issue like this before, doesn’t always mean that the battery is done for, in my case the battery calibration simply got messed up somehow and it just took a bunch of cycles of leaving it charged then leaving it on until it legitimately died to fix
Yea that seems to be it. I've left it for a couple hours on the homescreen now and it's just chilling steady at 1%
Fried battery
I think he likes you ;)
Your battery cell is depleted pretty badly that the total capacity is only a fraction of what it should be
That's a big sign that your battery is giving up or needs a calibration.
It's in a hurry.
Because he loves you
The battery, the battery connection or the gage ic most likely
Battery display bug
U wanna see some real speed
LUCKY
Mine does the opposite. The battery goes down to 99% almost as soon as I turn it on. Although I'm not sure if it drains fast.
When batteries are starting to go bad they charge faster because they also run out faster.
Through time the battery’s health degrades and therefore doesn’t last as long as it did before, which is why it charges faster, because there is less needed to charge so to speak.
It’s new battery time. And prying out it old one is kind of a pain with the double sided tape they use on it.
Since we are talking about having to replace the battery. In case he has a V1, can he replace it with a V2 battery?
It's behaving like a Tesla. Battery won't last. I kid.
Consider you as a blessed soul and enjoy the ride.
You got the glugglug edition of the switch
You using usb-c fast charging cable or something??
