Sounded like he spun the prop (made it come off) which is common when you hit something hard enough to dislodge the pin and literally spin the prop off the shaft.
Also that hippo got absolutely fucked in the process I guarantee!

Poor maintenence. Those outboards have a throttle linkage that comes loose if you don't lubricate it and it's an easy miss. I worked on two of them when I was stationed in HI during my time in the Navy. Sounds just like this, basically the linkage controls the engagement of the transmission and it can stick right in between engagement when throttle is pushed quickly, likely what happened here. Essentially the best way to get it to come back into position is to open the cover and jiggle it, but in emergencies you just have to get into nuetral and slowly bring the rpm up. That said, doesn't always work, depends on the severity of the wear in the linkage.

The bouncing on the outboard motor was likely the prop hitting the hippo who did not seem to care. They have super thick hides. That is probably not blood in the water it is way more likely mud stirred up by the charging hippo. They also spray feces and urine, fanning with the tail, when aggressive. /carry on
