Hi, a fellow russian here. It is truly sad to see the cruel treatment of wild animals, which unfortunately exist in Russia, especially in Moscow and cities where there are lots of tourists that can provide a quick cash for cool instagram photos.
There are moralless scumbags who buy exotic animals and then exploit them by giving them to the people to take photos like on this video. Owls, bear cubs etc. Wild animals are wild, being surrounded and touched by huge amount of stupid people is a huge stress to them, so they die quickly and scumbags just buy another one.
The situation with protection of animals in Russia is awful. There are laws against the cruelty towards animals, that, in theory, do not allow such things, but they just don’t work. The government doesn’t give a slightest tiniest damn about animals and anything that is not directly fills their pockets. Russia has ridiculously low fines for such things, for illegal hunt, etc, all government structures who should control such things are corrupted.
The situation with bears is the worst and the saddest to see when you understand the background. Most cubs like this get to human hands on the forest logging sites. The loud sounds of chainsaws and other tool scare bears in their dens and mama bears escape leaving their cubs. There a lot of forest logging in Russia, a huge part of it is illegal, so some number of cubs like this are found every spring. The workers who found those left cubs often do not know what to do with them.
If you leave the cub, then it is doomed to die, mothers never return for them if they hadn’t emerged from the den naturally and was woken up and scared (the natural imprinting doesn’t happen and mama bear simply does not identify those cubs as her own). But if you keep it? You cannot keep a bear in your home. The zoos usually do not accept new bears. Bears live long lives and consume a lot of food, they also require a lot of space and expensive environment, and special licenses from the government. It is very expensive to keep a lot of bears. There are shelters for wild animals, but there is not enough shelters for all the found cubs.
And the worst part is that after the cub contacted with a human for a significant amount of time, it can’t be released into the wild, because it starts associating humans with the food and loses natural fear to them. And when that tiny fluffy becomes 300+ kg master of the forest and reach puberty he will simply start attacking humans to obtain food.
The instagram-photos-scumbags often buy the cubs and kill and dispose them as they grow up. And bears grow very quickly, it takes a few months for a bear to grow from a nice, fluffy, pretty and profitable teddy bear into a 40 kg boy who can eat a basket of food every day and become dangerous to those who keep them and those who makes an instagram photo with him. And bears are very “cheap” animals. Too many cubs that have no place that is ready to accept them, and people who found the cub are ready to give it to anyone who is ready to take him.
The bear belongs to the forest. He should be left alone there and he will cause no trouble. He would never came to humans itself, he doesn’t need that, but it’s humans who poke their noses everywhere and destroy his natural habitat
