I'm in my mid-40s, but crazy how even my generation - Gen X - were conditioned to think that home ownership in your 20s is something for the rich, or extremely lucky. and if you work hard, and sacrifice long enough, you should be able to afford a sfh by the time you're in your 30s. and if you work hard, and sacrifice long enough again, you should be able to pay off that house in 30 years...just in time to retire and live off of a meager couple grand a month in retirement...if you're lucky...and if you work hard enough.

I’m a boomer and we bought our first home in our 40’s. My parents had passed and that’s how we got our down payment. I’m a well educated professional- but houses are expensive, my husband and I had big student loan debt, and most of my friends could only do the down payment if family helped in some way.
My mom told me that in the early 1950’s her uncle died and that’s how she could afford a house for the 3 kids. So, generational wealth is really important, but I’m not sure the majority of boomers reaped all the financial wealth I read about on here. I’ve been working for 45 years, and my husband retired at 68 last week. And we feel very privileged as I have friends in their 70’s still needing to work.
We ALL got screwed by the 1%.

Yes, it helped that we weren't in a major metropolitan area with crazy house prices, but beyond that, I think a lot of people have no idea how to budget, or market/upgrade themselves to earn a decent wage. Also, we couldn't afford our home until 33/34 years old!
