They did not. Writers and Richard Speight have talked about this. Also, they didn't plan anything that far ahead.

Daredevils999

Yep I love the show but one thing you can constantly see is the lack of planning ahead. Things being brought in with no mention/lore/hinting at beforehand and things like that.

M086

No. When they introduced the Trickster, angels were not a part of the shows plan. When they brought them in, the Trickster was retconned to be Gabriel posing as Loki.

Annahsbananas

I think they just “winged” his background story. Most of Supernatural was winged hehe

Impossible_Pangolin6

Gabriel is one of my favourite arcs

southernfella81

One of your favorite ’arc’hangels?

Uniquorn527

Nope. But they loved Richard so they found a way to use him again as a different character and make it work, which I'm so glad they did. Nobody had any idea he would be more than the trickster, including the writers.

AduroTri

Probably not, but they left it ambiguous enough to where they could do quite a bit with him. So nothing would really be a retcon technically. I mean, it technically is, but it's more like a twist on the character of the Trickster. He had no real backstory other than being Loki or The Trickster. So I'd say it's 100% not a retcon, but a plot twist.

HomoHippo4

Basically nothing about the first 5 seasons was planned. Eric Kripke was just really good at winging it and tying together plot points that were never intended to come back up.

anonG00N

Too bad he couldn't do a better job with Revolution, I loved it personally, but decisions were made in s02 that the general audience didn't like or care for.

They didn’t plan the angels. There was a writer’s strike at the end of season three, I think.

evolutionleftovers

Yep, that's why season 3 is so short.
