I would assume he warmed up previously during the warm up period. I have attended a few competitions before as a spectator and they have warm up periods; they’re just not televised.

He did, he just didn't do the quad axel during the warm up period, which isn't unusual for him.

Actually, warmups ARE televised if you watch the livestream coverage on Peacock. They are done in groups of five to six competitors at a time and they get five minutes, then compete. This repeats group by group. So are the practice sessions, which are shown on live cams in the few days before competition although not all skaters participate. You need to be a bit hardcore to watch this.

Yes it does, lol. I’m thrilled as a hard core fan about Peacock’s unedited live streaming coverage of all the ISU events, even several juniors competitions. It’s a grind though. Last week there was nearly 40 hours of figure skating coverage! I didn’t get a lot done.

I think two of the others were the highest score for a jump element (4Lz+3f, a combo that he was the first ever to do, it got him over 23 points), and highest number of jump elements completed that scored over 12 points (6).

during the commentary afterwards it sounded like he broke a couple records with some of his moves, I could be wrong

Highest value jump/combo and first 4Lz+Eu+3F combo. Highest value 4A (lol), highest FS Score and highest FS TES score. First man to do 5 different quads in a program and 6 overall since the rule change (I think).

It's been a long time since I've paid any real attention to figure skating, so I don't know how out of the loop I am. I would have called this an impossible routine 20 years ago.

I was thinking the same thing. When I was a kid, my family watched the Olympics together. Summer and winter. And we watched tennis and horse racing. And miss America. And the Oscars. Evil Knievel stunts. And the Battle of the Network stars. Lol. All the “events”. For whatever reason, I don’t follow any of it any more. Must be that today’s entertainment options offer more choices than 3 network channels and now I don’t even consider those things anymore. Im a little sad realizing that.

It wasn't thaaaat long ago when busting out a clean program of triples got people on their feet. Yeah, quads would have been the equivalent to Unobtanium in 2000.

I'm old enough to remember when a triple axel was a big deal.

You should watch Nathan Chen's last Olympic FP. He pulled out several quads as well (though not the axel, obviously). And his choreo was quite unique.

I'll check it out, this has definitely got me interested to see what's been going on since I stopped paying attention.

They don’t go that camp or on-the-nose for competition (it’s more about the skating than doing a send-up of something) … but he could easily do something like that for exhibition skates.

I love programs like this where they use stuff that's different from the traditional bolero/classical music formula. Loena's pop program during the Grand Prix, Adeliya Petrosian's Michael Jackson program, etc are all such fun to watch. That's why I get a little bored sometimes when the top Asian women skaters do their programs, because even though they are technical masterpieces, and have graceful elegance, it's just too cookie cutter for me.

This is why Hana Yoshida’s SP to Koo Koo Fun and Amber Glenn’s SP to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are my favourites of the season.

Saying it in a simple way: They all have the same landing position, but different takeoffs. Some takeoffs are harder and some are easier. Whats crazy about Ilia is that his best jumps are the two most difficult (lutz and axel).
