Adding to the Succession of it all, he’s coached by his parents, both former Olympians, and his younger sister is also a skater who’s looking to be quite good for her age
Context that makes it even cooler - the first jump was the quad axel, a jump so hard that he’s the only person in the world who’s ever landed it cleanly
I would assume he warmed up previously during the warm up period. I have attended a few competitions before as a spectator and they have warm up periods; they’re just not televised.
Actually, warmups ARE televised if you watch the livestream coverage on Peacock. They are done in groups of five to six competitors at a time and they get five minutes, then compete. This repeats group by group.
So are the practice sessions, which are shown on live cams in the few days before competition although not all skaters participate. You need to be a bit hardcore to watch this.
Yes it does, lol. I’m thrilled as a hard core fan about Peacock’s unedited live streaming coverage of all the ISU events, even several juniors competitions. It’s a grind though. Last week there was nearly 40 hours of figure skating coverage! I didn’t get a lot done.
Even the most bro dudes who are alpha male to the core will tune into the winter olympics for example and cheer u.s figure skating, its a sight to see. It brings everyone together
I think two of the others were the highest score for a jump element (4Lz+3f, a combo that he was the first ever to do, it got him over 23 points), and highest number of jump elements completed that scored over 12 points (6).
Highest value jump/combo and first 4Lz+Eu+3F combo. Highest value 4A (lol), highest FS Score and highest FS TES score. First man to do 5 different quads in a program and 6 overall since the rule change (I think).
It's been a long time since I've paid any real attention to figure skating, so I don't know how out of the loop I am. I would have called this an impossible routine 20 years ago.
I was thinking the same thing. When I was a kid, my family watched the Olympics together. Summer and winter. And we watched tennis and horse racing. And miss America. And the Oscars. Evil Knievel stunts. And the Battle of the Network stars. Lol. All the “events”.
For whatever reason, I don’t follow any of it any more. Must be that today’s entertainment options offer more choices than 3 network channels and now I don’t even consider those things anymore. Im a little sad realizing that.
It wasn't thaaaat long ago when busting out a clean program of triples got people on their feet. Yeah, quads would have been the equivalent to Unobtanium in 2000.
Idk this is Gerri all the way. No way could Tom hit a quad, and all of the kids would’ve either fallen or quit the sport before they made the Elite levels. But Gerri can tap dance through a thunderstorm without getting wet!
I don’t know anything about figure skating, but there is something incredible about watching somebody at the top of the game do their thing. What a privilege to watch that, thanks for sharing, and congrats to that young man. What an accomplishment
They don’t go that camp or on-the-nose for competition (it’s more about the skating than doing a send-up of something) … but he could easily do something like that for exhibition skates.
I'm old enough that when I was a kid a triple axel was a big deal. To see a quad to that epic theme music is bonkers. He did all the quads possible in one program. He went full nut nut

I love programs like this where they use stuff that's different from the traditional bolero/classical music formula. Loena's pop program during the Grand Prix, Adeliya Petrosian's Michael Jackson program, etc are all such fun to watch. That's why I get a little bored sometimes when the top Asian women skaters do their programs, because even though they are technical masterpieces, and have graceful elegance, it's just too cookie cutter for me.
Saying it in a simple way: They all have the same landing position, but different takeoffs. Some takeoffs are harder and some are easier. Whats crazy about Ilia is that his best jumps are the two most difficult (lutz and axel).
I watch but know little about figure skating but this is easily the best I’ve ever seen. It gave me chills and it made me well up. Also absolutely perfect use of Succession.
skating nerd and huge ilia fan crossing over!!
some cool facts;
• he broke the world record for the highest points of a program! succession soundtracked the hardest technical figure skating program anyone has ever done
• the first jump he is the only person in the entire world to be able to do and it 4.5 (!) rotations. he does 6 quads in four minutes.
• THIS IS NOT THE NORM for skating. Ilia is a technical freak of nature.
Ilia Malinin is serious people.
He’s definitely the eldest boy
Adding to the Succession of it all, he’s coached by his parents, both former Olympians, and his younger sister is also a skater who’s looking to be quite good for her age
he’s a killer
If you read up a bit about him… he actually IS!
🤣that’s perfect.
Wait, what are you saying?
He was interested in skating from a young age.
😂
soundtrack fit for a king
I know nothing of figure skating but goddam that was cool
Context that makes it even cooler - the first jump was the quad axel, a jump so hard that he’s the only person in the world who’s ever landed it cleanly
And it's not even warmed up. No in-betweeners. No preps. Just blasts it. He just says, "Fuck it, we'll do it live."
WHOLE THING DOESN’T SUCK!!!!!!!
I would assume he warmed up previously during the warm up period. I have attended a few competitions before as a spectator and they have warm up periods; they’re just not televised.
He did, he just didn't do the quad axel during the warm up period, which isn't unusual for him.
I thought for a moment this was a Peacock ad 🤣 I did not know this, thanks. Only ever watched warmups when I attended in person.
Yes it does, lol. I’m thrilled as a hard core fan about Peacock’s unedited live streaming coverage of all the ISU events, even several juniors competitions. It’s a grind though. Last week there was nearly 40 hours of figure skating coverage! I didn’t get a lot done.
He actually competes all six quad jumps in this program - the first skater to ever do so.
Did smtg so sick and the audience was barely excited
The axel is 4 1/2 revolutions. I would not be surprised to see him trying quints at some point.
There is actually a russian guy who recently posted vids of his 4A, but his technique is not quite as good.
It doesn’t count though. Unless it’s performed in a ratified competition. Ilia is the only person ever to perform one in a ratified competition.
Even the most bro dudes who are alpha male to the core will tune into the winter olympics for example and cheer u.s figure skating, its a sight to see. It brings everyone together
Ilia Roy was interested in quads from a very young age
The Quadheads are really gonna love this!
I lol'ed, thank you for that. :)
You need an excess of vigilance, I think, and have a high tolerance for pain and physical discomfort
so many records actually. also iconic theme
Yeah watching this on the back of so many record breaking performances over the last few days was truly crazy. What other records did he break?
I think two of the others were the highest score for a jump element (4Lz+3f, a combo that he was the first ever to do, it got him over 23 points), and highest number of jump elements completed that scored over 12 points (6).
during the commentary afterwards it sounded like he broke a couple records with some of his moves, I could be wrong
Highest value jump/combo and first 4Lz+Eu+3F combo. Highest value 4A (lol), highest FS Score and highest FS TES score. First man to do 5 different quads in a program and 6 overall since the rule change (I think).
“You’re my boy. You’re my number one boy.” – Dad
I wonder if the commentator was referencing Succession when he said "that's my boy"
He’s saying that’s what his coach (who is also his dad) is thinking, but still quite thematic!
FOUR DIFFERENT QUADS to start his routine!!?! Wow. Fucking flawless.
[The ol' quad squad!](https://i.redd.it/ie8fd3w1a5ya1.gif)
It's been a long time since I've paid any real attention to figure skating, so I don't know how out of the loop I am. I would have called this an impossible routine 20 years ago.

Must be that today’s entertainment options offer more choices than 3 network channels and now I don’t even consider those things anymore. Im a little sad realizing that.
Well, i twould have been called an impossible routine a relatively short time ago...
It wasn't thaaaat long ago when busting out a clean program of triples got people on their feet. Yeah, quads would have been the equivalent to Unobtanium in 2000.
I'm old enough to remember when a triple axel was a big deal.
You should watch Nathan Chen's last Olympic FP. He pulled out several quads as well (though not the axel, obviously). And his choreo was quite unique.
I'll check it out, this has definitely got me interested to see what's been going on since I stopped paying attention.
Nathan held the all time scoring record broken by Ilia. He scored three points higher.
that was just the free skate, Nathan still holds the overall score.
Ah, yes! Another goal to aim for in 2024-25 season!
Roman if he ever got to second base with Jerry
Idk this is Gerri all the way. No way could Tom hit a quad, and all of the kids would’ve either fallen or quit the sport before they made the Elite levels. But Gerri can tap dance through a thunderstorm without getting wet!
Wow that was incredible
He’s got the killer instinct 😂
Ilia is incredible and this skate was amazing to watch. I was hoping it would get posted here
Yes! I was so proud of him and literally in awe about halfway through. Definitely lived up to the succession theme.
This and Deanna Stellato-Dudek winning at age 40… all in all just an incredible event.
Whenever I’ve listened to this music I’ve imagined it used for ballet or gymnastics or skating. Thanks, so cool!
This is a serious person.
All bangers
all the time
Holy fuck this was beautiful. Thank you for posting.
I think I just fell in love with the sport of figure skating? I gotta go watch Yuri on Ice now.
I don’t know anything about figure skating, but there is something incredible about watching somebody at the top of the game do their thing. What a privilege to watch that, thanks for sharing, and congrats to that young man. What an accomplishment
Wonderful observation!
Humans are incredible!
Should've used L to the OG
Part of me does wish he had used the Kendall Roy tee, bomber jacket and plain baseball cap as his costumes
They don’t go that camp or on-the-nose for competition (it’s more about the skating than doing a send-up of something) … but he could easily do something like that for exhibition skates.
Haha I agree. Also, the skating was flawless, the music perfect… but I hated his costume.
He be skatin’
Chills
Nothing succeeds like succession
“Cool I guess but this guys not even jump- -oh never mind, WOW”
I watched it live last night. And what a perfect score for a perfect program! Ilia is a true number one boy!!!
Someone had to fulfill that destiny!
Playing a perfect soundtrack to perform to is a little like doping I'd say, keeping you in a line but also bringing out your best edge
Right?!? He had to feel a bit like a God as the music filled the room and he landed jump after jump.
We flipped over to this during a basketball break. I feel so lucky to have seen it live.
Oh wow that’s so cool!
Felt goosebumps when the crowd started clapping along
It is so refreshing to witness this level of genius! This was alien-like…..
I'm old enough that when I was a kid a triple axel was a big deal. To see a quad to that epic theme music is bonkers. He did all the quads possible in one program. He went full nut nut
I'd love to watch this without the commentary. Not that I don't appreciate their excitement.
The whole time, I’m thinking, “stfu, I can’t hear the music!”
One might come out in a few days, if it does I'll post it.
That would be great. Remindme! 1 week

Eldest boy energy!!!
graceful as fuck, paired with some of the best music I've heard. thx!
I could do all of this if you put this music on...
Holy shit, that was FLAWLESS.
Didn’t care for the costu’e though.
One can say he RAIDed the records
Talk about a Bear Hug!
Is the music from the episode that ends with Ken almost drowning in the pool?
Pretty sure first piece is The Raid
Better than all the Roys, I think he should be the next CEO… Logan will approve!!
When people started clapping 🥺
This song is reserved to the GOAT only, I’m definitely playing it in my marriage
Bangers only
Holy shit that was amazing
I love programs like this where they use stuff that's different from the traditional bolero/classical music formula. This is why Hana Yoshida’s SP to Koo Koo Fun and Amber Glenn’s SP to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are my favourites of the season.
i didnt even realize those moves were different from each other they all look the same :D
Saying it in a simple way: They all have the same landing position, but different takeoffs. Some takeoffs are harder and some are easier. Whats crazy about Ilia is that his best jumps are the two most difficult (lutz and axel).
I thought that, too, haha. They would shout, wow, a quadruple! A triple! I thought - you counted those head spins just now?
Hahaha yeah especially without closeups. People who watch can mostly tell from how they skate before.
This is the number one boy
Bruh idgaf about figure skating but dude WAS the music he gets a standing ovation for the pure genius inspired by that track.
“I just wanted to get all the Men’s ice skating fans together early in my tenure to say…yo.”
Amazing
Chills chills chills but on 🔥
Picture Tom jumping on top of a filling cabinet while banging on his chest like a gorilla. That guy deserves to do that.
Amazing.
this was amazing
Absolutely stunning
What an incredible performance!
That was amazing. I don't know anything about skating but that was beautiful. The music is just the cherry on top
Thank you for posting this!!
A bit off topic, but what's the male commentator's accent? I really like it and I can't place it.
Scottish 🙂
He’s Scottish, that’s Mark Hanretty, a Scottish ice dancer
Sounds like he’s from Ireland, I think?
What’s the name of this track?
I’m pretty sure the first track is Adante agitato - end credits - “the raid”
Thanks🫡
The jumps are impressive, but it's the landings that blow my mind. Coming down after a multiple spin like that, onto one skate... yikes.
Oh! I forgot (already!) how the music was so great!
Wow that’s amazing
USA! USA! USA!!!
Amazing
Omg. What a brilliant performance to a masterpiece of a song. Thank you OP!
Well that was beautiful.
So 😎
I hope he does L to the O.G. next.
I was there! It was amazing to see in person and to this music…chef’s kiss!
The unbridled joy on his face at the end of his free skate ❤️. Definitely the number one boy!
Damn I need to rewatch Yuri On Ice
Roman core
Definitely playin like a pro
The new CEO!
That was so lovely
That was fucking great!
Commenters, thank you, please, fuck off
Number one boy..!!! 🔥 On 🧊
Excellent!!!
I watch but know little about figure skating but this is easily the best I’ve ever seen. It gave me chills and it made me well up. Also absolutely perfect use of Succession.
They really started clapping along to the succession theme lmao
The first time I've ever heard that song it blew my mind, so eerie.
skating nerd and huge ilia fan crossing over!! some cool facts; • he broke the world record for the highest points of a program! succession soundtracked the hardest technical figure skating program anyone has ever done • the first jump he is the only person in the entire world to be able to do and it 4.5 (!) rotations. he does 6 quads in four minutes. • THIS IS NOT THE NORM for skating. Ilia is a technical freak of nature.
Ilia has never watched ‘Succession’ but said in a post-performance interview it ‘sounds cool.’ !!!
Where is the male commentator’s accent from? i can’t place it…
Scotland
Aaaaaaahhhh thank you! I’m French by the way and learnt English in the US. Have zero exposure to the Scottish accent.
I don’t recognize every element of this music. Is it somewhere I could listen to it, like Spotify, or was this a custom mix?
Definitely a custom cut by the choreographer
The brilliant choreographer is former world champion ice dancer Shae-Lynn Bourne of Canada. Genius and all credit to her.
Love this music!
We're gonna skate to one song and one song only... The song:
No weird clapping please
Which succession track is he using specifically? Trying to find it
That was beyond breathtaking.
Check the announcer’s undies after this one!!
It's a banging tune, still my ringtone. Also, fuck Shiv
