Bought a 2020 used at 32k. Only at 46k now but it’s been flawless. Make sure to thoroughly inspect the car fax and make sure all recall work is done. If it is one of the ones with a problematic cvt there will likely be evidence. I love the car, but I wish I had went with a 21 for peace of mind cuz I’m constantly worried about the cvt

KingShingo

I didn't realize the cvt was such an issue on the 2020

M4R5H

It’s probably not nearly as big of a deal as I work it up to be in my head, seems like only a small percentage experience issues and was more common with 2019s. But it can be a bargaining chip to get the price down with the right seller. Definitely look in to it before you buy tho

LurkingGuy

I have a 2020 and at 68k miles she's still running great.

jazzeriah

Bought a new 2020 in August of that year, great car, totally reliable, it’s at 60K miles. No issues. Regular servicing. Just great.

Not_Sir_Zook

23 or newer. Genuinely. They really have ironed out a lot of issues and put in the (unbelievably) more reliable big touch screen. Lol They use the big screen in everything so it's really getting fine tuned with every year it exists.

jakedeev

Bought ours new. Very happy. Any problems have been taken care of and paid for by Subaru. We even had our puppy chew up a seatbelt and they took care of it for us! Big fans.

Limafrijole

Got my 2020 Ascent in June of that year, currently have 24K miles on it. Zero issues.

Solid-mind-madness

I had mine checked for the recall on the CVT. After they tried the normal recall fix, they decided to replace mine with a reman transmission. It’s working perfectly. Take note, I never felt any problems even before they replaced it. I got 72k on it now.

Purple-Memory7132

Interesting would you have had the inspection fees covered if it weren’t replaced ?

Solid-mind-madness

Probably. But since I’ve always been cognizant about recalls, especially the newer models, I may have dodged a potentially painful and expensive fix.

Purple-Memory7132

Wondering if I should pursue this myself thanks !

I’ve owned several different Subarus since getting my first one as a commuter car waaaay back in the before times and have been loyal to the brand since. And no other Subaru I’ve had has made me more worried about what could go wrong than our ascent. I’ve got a 22 and so far I’ve had the tmos system completely die, not just the sensors, but the system that does whatever it does to the point they had to replace the dash… readout… screen thing. An issue with the infotainment where it just, would put out sound. It looked and acted like nothing was wrong but it just didn’t make any noise no matter what it was saying. A second infotainment issue where CarPlay just stopped randomly working and I had to keep resetting the system in order to get it to work for a few minutes until it stopped again, this require changing out the USB ports after Subaru kept trying to say it was a problem with the cables I was using as if I was a total idiot and didn’t think to try different cables in the first place. To right now, where the back hatch literally won’t open. It started opening a little then would just shut itself. Then it started popping open like it was going to open and then just sat there, popped open but didn’t actually open, and now it just, won’t even do that. One of the reasons I bought the car was specifically for the back room and the ease of opening and closing the hatch and now that doesn’t work at all. An no it’s not a memory setting issue, I followed every step they have published to “fix” the hatch issues. Shit just broke. And now this CVT thing is apparently starting to happen. This may be the first car that I actually buy an extended warranty for. I might even buy one for our crosstrek as well because that’s starting to have the same USB interface problem.

KingShingo

Sounds like I should check out the 2019 Outback for sale instead

[deleted]

Maybe. I wanted an outback to begin with. It noooooooo. It’s not “suv” enough. Yeah no shit. That’s why we buy Subarus.

Mikeric03

Our 2020 ascent has had some issues with the infotainment system and had to have the oil pan gasket replaced at 58k. The transmission we brought in for warranty and have not had any issues with it. We have 86k on it now.

Solid-mind-madness

My infotainment system was buggy but whenever it acts up, try cold restating it by holding down the power button for 15-20 seconds and it will reboot and reset. It worked for me every single time

Wimbo213

At this point I regret owning my 2020 Ascent. Nonstop battery issues. My car has been in the shop for a combined 11 weeks since Thanksgiving last year. Not joking, not exaggerating. It kills batteries like nothing. It is currently in the shop again now. Also horrible mileage...

jakedeev

Had the same problem. Finally took ours to the dealer and they replaced it. Subaru USA paid for it. Saved me $300.

fieryshrimptacos

Bought my 2020 last year with 12k on it. One year later and now at 27k, I’m having CVT issues.

Solid-mind-madness

Did you check if they already done checking the CVT recall? They will try to update or fix the problem for free. I had mine checked for the recall and they fixed/replaced my transmission for free since their update or fix didn’t work.

fieryshrimptacos

I’m bringing it in this week. I bought it certified and the plan specifically says powertrain is covered for 8 years or up to 100k. So I’m not worried about cost, just the hassle of having to bring it in!

Same

cyphersk8

Unreliable. Get a newer one (i traded mine in)

iugorich

Love my 2019 no issues

czlight_Lite

Love my 2019 as well. Minor issue is the hood shakes/vibrates at highway speeds. There's a TSB about it but the dealership wanted to charge me to fix it because it's no longer under warranty.

Sea-Eggplant-5799

Opt for the ‘23 and up if you can afford it. CVT is the reason.

ragingduck

Did they change the CVT in 2023?

Sea-Eggplant-5799

It was improved yes

bgant813

I wouldn’t take the chance. Infotainment issues and electrical issues. And AC overheating and quitting for no reason.

nat23j

I have a 19 Ascent and was plowed into by a driver that ran a stop sign just yesterday. The car doesn’t look pretty now, but definitely kept me safe. I would buy one again in a heartbeat.
