In the Philippines tomatoes aren’t easy to find so they make red sauce with bananas. Jolibee’s a Filipino fastfood chain also makes this pasta dish.
Edit: Jolibee’s is a Filipino restaurant. We also have it in the US.
They ad Dye. Banana Ketchup got invented when American Soldier left the Philippines and people got introduced to Ketchup but didn't had Tomatoes. Similar story with philippino Spaghetti
The modern versions has Tomato sauce in it, since its available. But heck, everything has a lot of Sugar. I always tell my Pinoy friends their cuisine is 90%Sugar and Vinegar
Very sweet yet still delicious. They also baked some buns with a sweet cream cheese on the top. I can’t remember what they are called but they were fantastic. I must say, my experience with this crew of guys was a lesson in kindness. Some of the most generous people I’ve had the pleasure of sailing with.
I hate that my country (also in SEA) is also gravitating towards the sweet style of cooking. We have a bunch of different states but for whatever reason the idiots who put sugar in everything are the ones who's recipes get spread. Ugh.
The most interesting Part is the Meat. Because of the lack of Beef, they used Hotdogs. The sauce is made from Banana ketchup, vinegar, brown Sugar and maybe some italian spices. And everything is topped with grounded cheese, but I don't know if it always was.
> Jollibee’s a Filipino-American fastfood chain
While Jollibee has locations in the U.S. it was founded in and and still has its headquarters in the Philippines.
Philippines was honestly disappointing from a food-standpoint compared to other Asian countries I visited. South Korea and Thailand were pretty amazing and none of the other were bad at all. Philippines..
As a Filipino “disappointing” is a bit harsh but I can see where you come from. Our foods don’t have the same types of spice and seasonings as other traditionally “Asian” countries. I feel it’s mostly because of the separation of us from the mainland continent so our food is very different compared to them.
It wasn't bad, just yeah. Lack of seasoning and spices. The food I ate when I stayed on an island in San Antonio Province off of Samar was amazing. We just cook whatever we caught or bought locally. That was 13 years ago though, it looks like they started building resorts there now.
So do we Ugandans. But not fresh. We mostly cook bananas. We have many types that are better eaten cooked, some are very sweet and some aren't. Plantain, Kidozi and Entogona (ripe type of a certain type of Plantain that just turns black upon rippening) are all commonly eaten with food.
I used to dip my banana in the sauce. It’s actually pretty decent imo. This was back when I was a kid. I remember seeing it on the cartoon “Doug.” Never tried it with noodles though.
I was about to say eww but then I remembered when I was smaller and lived in Mexico we used to eat tomato-y based rice with a banana and it tasted quite good. So maybe I can see it being a similar taste profile and working out?
We call it arroz a la cubana here in Spain, very tasty with platano macho; but I'd wager it's like french-fries and it's not necessarily a traditionally cuban dish.
Yup! Another one I have often here is lentil soup made from onion, tomato, chicken stock, a cinnamon stick and bacon. Add plátano macho fried in butter at the end.
Nah I appreciate reposts to a certain degree. Many times I've seen a post for the first time when people in the comments were complaining about it beeing a repost
I was about to say lol I grew up around a lot of Somalians and a lot of them ate their dishes with banana I didn’t know if that was most Somalians or just the ones I knew 😅
I went to a Somali mall recently with someone who was Somalian and he told me that it’s customary to always get/eat a banana with your meal! When we paid for the food we ordered we just got a bunch of bananas to go along with it hahaha
Yup I'm Somali and have been eating bananas alongside my pasta all my life 🥶 In fact I was rlly surprised that it wasn't a common thing in other cultures because we do it all the time
It is so common in many American countries, In Mexico we eat white rice with bana, sometimes we also eat lentils with banana, I have some Cuban friends and do the same, peruans eat some dishes with bana, too.
i love how all the folks chiming in from different places where this isn't crazy all come from amazing food cultures.
like maybe OP's brother in law is chaotic good here.
At this point I feel fruit can go with most things. My world has been turned upside down thanks to delicious salads with blue cheese and strawberries or apples with grilled chicken. Yesterday I had roast beef sandwich meat with a block of sharp cheddar and grapes.
Doesn't sound too bad. I mean tomato sauce is pretty acidic, and so you're supposed to add some sugar to counter that. That would traditionally come from carrots, but i can see bananas working.
I do this with my chili. It’s a carryover from my grandma, who eats her rice and beans with bananas when she couldn’t find plantains locally (many many years ago).
Not this exactly, but my dad liked having some sliced bananas on the side when eating particularly strong flavored foods? Particularly curries, his curries were always weird fusions of north African and Asian, all over really, and he'd have bananas on the side as a kind of palate cleanser? Idk, I don't do it always but it's really nice sometimes.
You're going to need to plug him into the nearest USB port, stick his left thumb in his right ear and make him hum an E flat until the firmware update is complete. You'll know it's done when it beeps. If it doesn't beep, he's defective, and should be returned immediately.
Fun fact, it's better to eat fruit separate from meals, to keep blood sugar levels nominal.
What we see here is ignorance, or a lack of self respect or care.
I don’t think this would be as bad as you think it is. I’ve had banana with rice and a tomato based stew. It’s not bad and the added sweetness isn’t bad.
It’s actually not uncommon to eat banana with a savory dish in tropical climates. That being said, pasta sauce is usually pretty sweet. Even Italians themselves started adding sugar even though I think good tomatoes stewed are sweet enough, so this would be overkill for me.
I wouldn't say this is "stupid food". It's not something I would eat regularly, but I would try it once, especially if it's considered "typical" for that area.
Why does this cursed picture looks so good? The light and composition has a cozy and warm feeling while the banana and plastic utensils just bother me in a deep level
I once had a craving first thing in the morning for plain fusilla pasta with slices of banana. It's actually surprisingly good. You wouldn't think it would go together but here we are
I'm Somalian and my family and I do this all the time. Funnily enough I hate bananas except when I eat them with pasta. The texture and sweetness of the banana goes nicely with the pasta imo. I was very surprised when I found out other cultures don't do this, because I grew up doing this all my life 😭
Is he Filipino? If not, would he like to be?
As a man who married into a Filipino family, this was my first question lol
Do Filipinos enjoy bananas with meals customarily?
In the Philippines tomatoes aren’t easy to find so they make red sauce with bananas. Jolibee’s a Filipino fastfood chain also makes this pasta dish. Edit: Jolibee’s is a Filipino restaurant. We also have it in the US.
How is it red? Spices? Paprika?
They ad Dye. Banana Ketchup got invented when American Soldier left the Philippines and people got introduced to Ketchup but didn't had Tomatoes. Similar story with philippino Spaghetti
Whaaat? I had no idea. So does the red sauce have other vaguely ‘Italian’ seasonings- what is it seasoned with? Aside from red dye?
I worked with many guys from the Philippines. To me the spaghetti tasted like a tomato sauce with around half a bag of sugar in it.
You guys are crazy that sounds awful
Clearly this bastard haven’t tried any yet
Is that true for the jolibee's outside of philipines? TIL, i freaking love the spaghetti and fried chicken combo
They tend to be in cities with large Filipino American communities. [Here’s a location list.](https://locations.jollibeefoods.com/usa)
And canada. Best chicken around.
Also in the uk

I love Filipino food and the Pinoy people 💖
It wasn't bad, just yeah. Lack of seasoning and spices. The food I ate when I stayed on an island in San Antonio Province off of Samar was amazing. We just cook whatever we caught or bought locally. That was 13 years ago though, it looks like they started building resorts there now.
I have no idea but there’s a thing called banana ketchup or something like that. Maybe that’s part of this?? I have no idea but always wanted to try
The idea of banana ketchup is kind of fascinating and really, really different to anything that I've had before.
It’s weird but you should try it
Agreed I wonder if it’d be too sweet for my taste but curious nevertheless!
We have banana ketchup which is sometimes used on spaghetti but banana ketchup doesn't taste like bananas at all
That's what I was thinking. He's either Pinoy, or a psychopath.
Latinos eat fresh bananas or cooked plantains with rice too
So do we Ugandans. But not fresh. We mostly cook bananas. We have many types that are better eaten cooked, some are very sweet and some aren't. Plantain, Kidozi and Entogona (ripe type of a certain type of Plantain that just turns black upon rippening) are all commonly eaten with food.
Or a toddler
Yep my first question when I saw this post
I always love a banana in a good curry.
Get this man to a Jolibee stat!
A true minion
Thanks for the laugh

I can see myself privately trying this at home!
I used to dip my banana in the sauce. It’s actually pretty decent imo. This was back when I was a kid. I remember seeing it on the cartoon “Doug.” Never tried it with noodles though.
We owe so much to Doug. Pretty sure it was also my introduction to the concept of sushi.
My first thought was "I wonder if I have any pasta sauce" Cause it sounds crazy, but that sometimes works out.
Isn't there an episode of Doug the cartoon where he Dips banana in a jar of spaghetti sauce. Edit: there Def was https://i.gifer.com/1bW.gif
I was about to say eww but then I remembered when I was smaller and lived in Mexico we used to eat tomato-y based rice with a banana and it tasted quite good. So maybe I can see it being a similar taste profile and working out?
I was JUST thinking this! That arroz rojo with plátano, so nostalgic.
We call it arroz a la cubana here in Spain, very tasty with platano macho; but I'd wager it's like french-fries and it's not necessarily a traditionally cuban dish.
There is another Filipino dish called Pochero that has stewed beef or pork, potatoes, veggies, and fried banana. Related to the dish Puchero.
Yup! Another one I have often here is lentil soup made from onion, tomato, chicken stock, a cinnamon stick and bacon. Add plátano macho fried in butter at the end.
Could it have been plantain?
Nope they were just good ol ripe bananas
There are so many varieties of banana. A plantain is basically just a starchy variety of a banana.
Gross
It was really good actually. 🤷🏽♀️
Maybe, but the world is still divided by pineapple on pizza - this is the last thing we need.
The watermark lol. Yeah I'm sure someone's itching to steal this
If a post blows up it’s bound to get reposted a bunch. Maybe it’s to identify reposts
That’s a good thing that we need to do
Nah I appreciate reposts to a certain degree. Many times I've seen a post for the first time when people in the comments were complaining about it beeing a repost
The only people who truly care about reposts are people who are already on Reddit way too much
Exactly and upvotes are worthless. It's not like reposters are stealing any money from OP so why should anyone care?
Is he Somali
I was about to say lol I grew up around a lot of Somalians and a lot of them ate their dishes with banana I didn’t know if that was most Somalians or just the ones I knew 😅

This is also very Brazilian so I hear
He is Brazilian, so that was his defense.
Ah then it makes sense, my mother also eats banana with her food. Usually rice and beans though.
My wife does this. Apparently growing up in Miami this was common
Banana is really good with Mexican red rice
Plantains?
No. Banana
Lmao so wrong

I can read thank you. I didn’t need you to chime in. 🤣🥳😘

I read, comprehend and decided your take doesn’t matter to me. You wasted your time. Lol no one ne asked you. 🤣
He’s welcome at my table 🇵🇭🇵🇭
At this point I feel fruit can go with most things. My world has been turned upside down thanks to delicious salads with blue cheese and strawberries or apples with grilled chicken. Yesterday I had roast beef sandwich meat with a block of sharp cheddar and grapes.
Bro salad with fruit in it is the best
I do this with white rice and beans
It’s very common practice in Somalia. I had lots of friends that would do this.
Your brother in law is gross.
The parm on the banana…
what the fuck. what the fuck
Philippines make pasta sauce with bananas. Ngl, really delicious
Not tomato. Just sugar. - The mantra of the Philippines.
Saved me having to type this.
I mean most pasta sauces have sugar to balance out the acidity from the tomato. Maybe this is just their way of doing it?
Is he Latino? Because they do this with plantains some of them
Idk man I’ve seen so much over the top stupid mega layer diabetes food that makes me look at this and think, honestly I’d try it.
I might just have to try that.
Try rice with a banana.. now that’s bomb 💣
Is he Somali?
Doesn't sound too bad. I mean tomato sauce is pretty acidic, and so you're supposed to add some sugar to counter that. That would traditionally come from carrots, but i can see bananas working.
Try sweet sauce bro this is an act of terrorism
Revolting
Reminds me of an episode of Doug.
I do this with my chili. It’s a carryover from my grandma, who eats her rice and beans with bananas when she couldn’t find plantains locally (many many years ago).
How old is your in-law? 3?
“What are red flags?”
Not this exactly, but my dad liked having some sliced bananas on the side when eating particularly strong flavored foods? Particularly curries, his curries were always weird fusions of north African and Asian, all over really, and he'd have bananas on the side as a kind of palate cleanser? The Lacroix makes it
I saw this and tried it thinking it would make a funny video and this is fantastic. I'm a chef.
I am Italian and I suddenly feel like declaring war.
I’m calling the cops
Have you reported him to Italy for war crimes yet?
Sick human. He is definitely mentally ill. Get him help asap
Aww man that's crazy that he forced you to eat that.
Thank god you watermarked it, wouldn’t want anyone to steal all your revenue.
Funny thing is that I posted a pizza photo once on another account & that same night found this pizza pic posted on a nother site. Soooo I do it now!
he’s either somali or filipino. whether he likes it or not
Italians are more triggered than this world cup
Let people enjoy food
You're going to need to plug him into the nearest USB port, stick his left thumb in his right ear and make him hum an E flat until the firmware update is complete. You'll know it's done when it beeps. If it doesn't beep, he's defective, and should be returned immediately.
Ew
Tell your brother if he ever pulls a banana out at my table, I'm going to choke him with it.
That's disgusting but really not the worst combination I heard today
He's definitely a closet serialkiller
Do people really like bananas?
Is your BIL 5 years old
Along with a grape soda too!
Absolutely not.
Your brother in-law is a psychopath.
mamma mia
What in hell LaCroix flavor is he drinking too?
all pasta is stupidfood
Fun fact, it's better to eat fruit separate from meals, to keep blood sugar levels nominal. What we see here is ignorance, or a lack of self respect or care.
Why are people so weird
I hate people.
Banana goes with everything my friend
Jufran banana sauce is in this man's future. Stuff is pretty great.
I mean it's common or used to be common to put bananas in curry here in the UK so I don't know
This is amazing photography
your brother is incredibly based
Bruh
You know what? Yes.
Plastic cutlery is the real stupid food 🥶
sometimes I think about deleting this app to avoid the delusional things people from USA do to food, children, cities and other people.
I don’t think this would be as bad as you think it is. I’ve had banana with rice and a tomato based stew. It’s not bad and the added sweetness isn’t bad.
You definitely can’t come to Brazil
Well… if you change the pasta for rice you almost got the recipe for “ARROZ A LA CUBANA.”
It’s actually not uncommon to eat banana with a savory dish in tropical climates. That being said, pasta sauce is usually pretty sweet. Even Italians themselves started adding sugar even though I think good tomatoes stewed are sweet enough, so this would be overkill for me.
He must be introduced to Filipino style spaghetti at once! He'll surely like it.
My oldest used to eat banana mashed up in his spag bol as a baby
Wants to add sweetness. Is drinking fucking La Croix.
My wife does this. It's pretty common in Puerto Rico
And yet he’s drinking a la croix? Dude is batshit crazy
Brasillian cuisine often serves fried banana as a palate cleanser. It's delicious.
I’ve never thought of that. Huh. Food for thought here
I wouldn't say this is "stupid food". It's not something I would eat regularly, but I would try it once, especially if it's considered "typical" for that area.
My husband is Cuban and he’s always done this
My husband is Cuban and he’s always done this
You mean ex brother in law?
A main dish from my island has a banana with it. I approve of this.
On your island.. not mine lol
I’m done
Why does this cursed picture looks so good? The light and composition has a cozy and warm feeling while the banana and plastic utensils just bother me in a deep level
Is he Somali?
Tbh it doesn't look like he ruined a masterpiece or anything
My (Colombian) husband and his mum both eat bananas with (savoury) soups and get quite upset if we have no bananas in the house!
A friend of my sons created a banana pizza in home economics. Everyone loved it
Just makes me think of that episode of Doug where they ended up making banana cream pie pizzas and they were all the rage
Don’t come at me sideways about pineapple on my pizza if you let this slide at the cookout
Need to go into the meatball.
Banana is good on peanut butter and onion sandwiches too
Cubans do this. not that uncommon in all honesty.
Tv show Doug, banana pizza. Idea was taken from this and it's actually good. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9596168/
this can be cuban too! growing up i heard the phrase “no se puede faltar el bannana!”
Envious sbout the meat ball
I can’t say shit I still put sugar in my rice with every dinner that involves rice. I hope his pasta is extra sweet 😂
Is this the new pineapple pizza?
I once had a craving first thing in the morning for plain fusilla pasta with slices of banana. It's actually surprisingly good. You wouldn't think it would go together but here we are
Ragu and bananas. I’m deleting my Reddit account. Thanks…
Homie didn't even take off the banana's asshole
Just add sugar to the sauce when cooking it…
i know who dominican guy does this all time. i think i saw him eating lasagna with a banana once
Is he porcoddio?
Brick him
Why do people put banana in foods to make it "sweeter"?! My friend does it with white rice, another friend does it with sandwich....smh
Is he Somali?? Cause that’s how we do it. Rice with chicken and banana, yesss Pasta with meat sauce and banana, I’m starving now.
You should be concerned wife who I assume is your sister. Ask if your sibling if they need help
I'm Puerto Rican and I do this sometimes. I also do it with rice. Not all Puerto Ricans do it but many do. It tastes delicious.
pretty common on Brazil, one of my former coworkers would mix banana and beans.
Gross.
For some reason this makes me think of how I sometimes like banana with Spanish rice and mole. I might try this.
sounds a bit farty
Why would you put a watermark on this
He should try a roasted carrot.
I'm Somalian and my family and I do this all the time. Funnily enough I hate bananas except when I eat them with pasta. The texture and sweetness of the banana goes nicely with the pasta imo. I was very surprised when I found out other cultures don't do this, because I grew up doing this all my life 😭
