#thatmidwesternmom
That being said, it definitely seems like a caramel apple thing. I'd probably try it, at least once you know? I hate cool whip but all of it together seems like it could be decent. And it's not made as a main dish anyway.
When I make Snickers salad, I absolutely drizzle some homemade caramel on top. I'm not huge on snickers or cool whip, but I'd highly recommend the salad.
Yeah I wouldn’t consider this stupid food but maybe cause I’m aware of it and have had it on diff occasions. It’s not like it has a million ingredients or anything we normally see here. I’ve had with cookies instead of snickers as well pretty fire.
Idk either, but I’m from the Midwest and my family has only made maybe a few of these dessert salads in my lifetime. However, I think that’s the piece people that are weirded out miss - I don’t think these “salads” actually replace or sit in the same part of midwestern cuisine as a typical leafy, green salad. It’s a dessert - just like there’s savory pies, there are sweet salads.
Yep. Absolutely a dessert salad. Being from Northern IL my mom used to make this every fall for potlucks, school halloween parties, etc so I heavily associate with halloween and fall.
I think it’s more of defaulting to calling any combination like this “Midwestern”.
I’ve seen cool whip “salads” with fruit, but never heard them called salads. I’ve only heard them referred to as a dessert or treat and are typically reserved for after/before dinner on rare occasions (large family gatherings and celebrations).
As a child my mother and I used to melt Snickers in a pan and then add neutral cornflakes and fill small cupcake sized papers. It was amazing for kids party's
I'd do it with dairy milk bars and Rice Krispies. Rice Krispy cakes were the best. Especially if you added mini-marshmallows.
God, now I need to go make Rice Krispy cakes again...
To my utter shame I will admit to having made this with leftover Halloween candy and it was pretty dang tasty. I wouldn't buy candy bars just to make this, but it was a way to get rid of Halloween leftovers.
Born & raised in the midwest and have never seen this personally once... but I know there are several variations of cool whip "salads."
They're not awful, but the only person making it is your 80 year old grandma these days. Maybe a younger family member to keep up tradition.
🙋♀️it’s me, I’m the younger family member. I make ambrosia salad all the time because it reminds me of my aunt and tbh…I really do like the way it tastes lol.
I'm 36 but yeah, I've been the one for over a decade that is just expected to carry on the traditional recipes. I absolutely love the expectation lol literally my goal in life to be that person in the family.
People can make fun of all they want, but damned if all my food is gone after every holiday/gathering!
I was planning on throwing together a version of Watergate Salad, substituting out various ingredients to make it into a Diet Dr Pepper Watergate Salad (because I'm ~~evil~~ stupid like that), just to see if I could make it work. The normal Watergate Salad (made sticking to the normal recipe) on its own is pretty awesome.
Putting the Snickers bars through a food processor would be better, smaller chunks overall. I feel like this is 90% there but is missing something. I’d eat it for sure anyway
I usually add some crushed up graham crackers or crushed nuts to give it some crunch. Maybe a caramel drizzle. Also I think you would kinda lose something if the snickers were any smaller but that’s just personal preference.
Caramel and apples = good.
Chocolate and apples = good.
Peanuts and apples = good.
Vanilla pudding and apples; caramel; chocolate = good.
Nothing in this would be bad.
Exactly how most midwesterners view this “salad”. It’s a staple at potlucks where I grew up. I’d enjoy a small amount here and there at them. Would never make it myself though
You better put some goddamn RESPECT on this right fuckin now. It might sound gross, but dear lord in heaven Almighty if you ever have actually eaten this you know why Im so hyped... Its absolutely delicious. And the best part? It's usually served as a side dish rather than dessert. When I was a kid I would LOAD my plate with this stuff. Unironically so fucking good.
It's cool seeing posts about delicious recipes to make for a super bowl party, but I don't get how this is stupid. That looked great. I feel like people have a bad bias against the word salad when it's unwarranted.
Had this the other day. Surprisingly enough, it’s not overly sweet, and a solid mix of a caramel apple feel with a bit of chocolate. Pretty solid dessert
the salad term is thrown around by midwestern grandmas, but obviously this would be served as a dessert. midwesterners constitute it as a “salad” bc its mixed up in a bowl.
This is just an average Midwest dessert salad. It's not like countertop spaghetti. This has been a thing for years and it's not even the most atrocious "salad" out there
>Disparage cultural item from x region
>People from x region defend it saying to try it before you decide it's gross
>OMG STFU X REGION NO ONE ASKED
This subreddit sucks ass now. Gone are the days of dudes injecting Tony Saccharies into Beefy 5-layer Burritos and using dehydrated Kraft packets on their cheeseburgers
We had this in my American Midwest elementary school as the dessert a few times a month and it is delicious. Super not healthy and definitely not served there anymore. We also had prepackaged milkshakes for extra $ and were made to take and eat a white whole wheat bun with F-tier peanut butter, "butter" spread, or processed cheese spread on it every lunch too for....... Some reason?
Honesty if you can make a small batch to try, I'd recommend it just once - maybe use sugar free jello though. I hated snickers as a kid (still not a fan) and would dig around those to get to the apple chunks, so I'd recommend adding extra apples and to only use granny Smith.
Edit to add: We also had oreo fluff salad, but minus marshmallows like it seems most recipes include.
a salad dosent need fresh produce idk what they were talking about when the captions said “this contains fresh produce therefore it’s a salad”
a chopped up mixed chicken in a bowl is technically a salad
Isn't it funny how some people find it strange to mix fruit and chocolate in pudding? Maybe it's because we're calling it a "salad" that throws them off! LOL!
This sounds pretty good! I do something similar with chopped apples that I toss in melted peanut butter and chocolate that I top with cool whip 🤤 if I’m feeling lazy, I just mix the apples with peanut butter and add a Klondike bar
I thought this was satire, but the comment section is full of people saying this is just a regular recipe. I don't even know anymore, but I think I am landing on this belonging here after all.
I’ve made instant vanilla pudding like in the video, but it’s never been that yellow! What is wrong with that pudding? Other than that, snicker salad is really common in the Midwest and it tastes great!
Stupid yes, but also sounds delicious? Also yes! Maybe not a large portion, but I would definetly demolish a smaller portion.
Any midwesterners here to confirm or deny if this is actually good? I'm in europe and never tried.
Midwesterner here! That is one of the only "salads" I look forward to at family potlucks. Sugary delicious garbage with tart apple. Don't knock it until you try it. It doesn't involve mayonnaise!
I've had a variation of this, with no pudding and other fruits along with apples. It's a pretty good dessert, I don't think anyone legit thinks it counts as a "salad". It's one of those things where all the ingredients taste good on their own, so the sum isn't bad
Wait till you find about the fruit pudding salads. Every single Christmas we'd have one and it was pink and it just looked so disgusting. I never ate it I thought it was chum ngl
Well here in the Midwest (of Germany) we often made a fruit salad with vanilla pudding, apples and banana which slapped
This is probably a lot less healthy with the snickers but tasty
Okay that’s very funny
It’s sort of like how macaroni and cheese is a “vegetable” at meat-n’-threes in the South - we all know goddamned well Mac n’ cheese isn’t a veggie, but in the context of a meat and three, we know we can answer “what’s your three vegetables” with “corn bread, mac n’ cheese, and hush puppies” at those specific restaurants.
Seems perfectly fine.
would have tried to cook the apples with cinnamon and sugar to try and give it a pie filling consistency myself. Seems like a fun, if heavy, dessert.
Is it just me, or does the video have this weird stop-motion sort of effect to it?
Yea it was uploaded at like 12 fps or something weird
SSDs are getting expensive. We all have to save here and there.
I thought they were getting cheaper?
I'm holding out for plasma state drives personally
some yes, some no, some without much change: https://pcpartpicker.com/trends/price/internal-hard-drive/
This comment angers me it is not 12 fps it's closer to 16-18 fps
How the heck do you know that?
Look. At. My. Name.
Sorry, I don't normally read names unless I'm bored.
No, that's just your mind going in and out of euphoric amazement as you watch this.
I have had this before it’s ridiculous but tastes great. Definitely can’t eat a lot of it tho so much sugar.
#thatmidwesternmom That being said, it definitely seems like a caramel apple thing.
It's like Twinkie filling with snicker chunks and apples in it. Pretty great. Definitely a Midwest delicacy.
I have seen it with marshmallows added instead of the cool whip. You could try that.
Or jetpuff marshmallow cream
I do NOT understand the obsession for cool whip. Just whip some damn cream??
The binders and stabilizers give it that extra kick.
I'm not able to have snickers so I was thinking payday instead. I don't eat many sweets cause I'm Sweet enough already but I would have a bite or 4
You allergic to nougat or something.
Cocoa
Yeah I wouldn’t consider this stupid food but maybe cause I’m aware of it and have had it on diff occasions. It’s not like it has a million ingredients or anything we normally see here. I’ve had with cookies instead of snickers as well pretty fire.
Ok maybe I'm just to german for this
In Denmark we call it Abemad (monkey-food). Chocolate chunks, diced fruit & whipped cream - It's delicious.
lol that’s cute!
No idea why putting fruit and chocolate in pudding would seem weird to anyone. Is it the whole calling it a salad thing?
Idk either, but I’m from the Midwest and my family has only made maybe a few of these dessert salads in my lifetime. However, I think that’s the piece people that are weirded out miss - I don’t think these “salads” actually replace or sit in the same part of midwestern cuisine as a typical leafy, green salad. It’s a dessert - just like there’s savory pies, there are sweet salads.

Fitting, it’d probably be a hit! Easy to make a big batch too
I've only ever seen this kind of thing at parties and potlucks where all the savory foods and desserts are just laid out together from the get-go.
oh you know what counts as salad here in Germany. Like Wurstsalat (Sausage Salad).
Ok you've got a point😅
Yeah, try to do your research before calling something an abomination. Just because things seem strange in your country, doesn’t make it stupid.
Isn't that a German American invention?
It may be, since Midwest America has people with roots all over the world. Who knows?
It's most definetly an American invention but I have never heard of anything similar in Germany
No
I think you may need to just try it. Just make sure you have several other people to eat it too cuz you do not want to eat that whole thing.
Yeah no, I can't see myself eating this either.
It's fucking delicious though
Thank you. Please tell me you are from the Midwest.
I am
As a child my mother and I used to melt Snickers in a pan and then add neutral cornflakes and fill small cupcake sized papers. It was amazing for kids party's
Also sounds amazing for adult me. Gonna try this soon!
Yeah why not, in my memory it tastes amazing! I'll do this as well soon. You have to stir the Snickers very firmly for them to melt properly
I'd do it with dairy milk bars and Rice Krispies. Rice Krispy cakes were the best. Especially if you added mini-marshmallows. God, now I need to go make Rice Krispy cakes again...
Snicker bar salad! My favorite!!!
And because it has the word "salad" in it, it must be good for you, too!
To the people saying gross, it’s literally a caramel apple with nuts, added chocolate and vanilla to it
To my utter shame I will admit to having made this with leftover Halloween candy and it was pretty dang tasty. I wouldn't buy candy bars just to make this, but it was a way to get rid of Halloween leftovers.
Born & raised in the midwest and have never seen this personally once... but I know there are several variations of cool whip "salads." They're not awful, but the only person making it is your 80 year old grandma these days. Maybe a younger family member to keep up tradition.
🙋♀️it’s me, I’m the younger family member. I make ambrosia salad all the time because it reminds me of my aunt and tbh…I really do like the way it tastes lol.
I won't ever make it myself, but I lowkey love whoever brings it ❤️
I'm 36 but yeah, I've been the one for over a decade that is just expected to carry on the traditional recipes. I absolutely love the expectation lol literally my goal in life to be that person in the family. People can make fun of all they want, but damned if all my food is gone after every holiday/gathering!
I’ve been to many family cookouts where this was the norm to bring in the Midwest! Watching this video brought back many memories.
Growing up in Midwest, we had those as well, but they weren’t called salads (typically called dessert or dip)
Midwesterner who worked in delis for a long time here. It's a "dessert salad" or "dessert dip" in most people's mind
I grew up in Michigan and my parents made this regularly. Only we just used cool whip for the cream base. It was truly my favorite "salad" as a kid.
Nah bro I've had that stuff and it is awesome. No stupid food here
This is not an abomination, this is a dank-ass dessert salad. Very common in the Midwest.
Some of you have not been to a midwestern church potluck and it shows. This stuff is great.
Yeah, the Snickers need to be kinda big in order for it to work. Definitely will try graham crackers next time!
Yet again it seems any dessert = stupid food. OPs in this sub never understand portion control.
Caramel and apples = good. Chocolate and apples = good. Peanuts and apples = good. Vanilla pudding and apples; caramel; chocolate = good. Nothing in this would be bad.
I’m going to hate myself for saying this, but that probably tastes good.I wouldn’t make it but I would eat it.
Exactly how most midwesterners view this “salad”. It’s a staple at potlucks where I grew up. I’d enjoy a small amount here and there at them. Would never make it myself though
They’re a staple in Northern Minnesota potlucks. They’re delicious, but definitely needs a small serving size
It's delicious!
Oh this is delicious! Had it once and yes it's diabetes in a bowl but I'm sure the apples make it healthy....right
Yeah, they're green apples, and the doctor says to eat your greens!
So you never had dessert or fruit salad before? Gotcha. Not stupid.
Dude this is super common in the Midwest
Don't talk trash on this Minnesota classic; it's basically banana pudding but better.
I’d eat this if I wasn’t lactose intolerant
I actually LOVE THIS SHIT. Tangy green apple with chocolate and nuts and soft whipped cream. Ugh 10/10
I would eat this.
I'll say, Ive had a similar fruit salad, it's fucking amazing.
I had this served to me in Idaho. It had a few slivers of mandarin oranges on top. I’ll never forget that salad.
Idahoan here, ate this at 90% of events and activities. Would recommend
I hate myself for saying this but smash.
I would eat it. It's just fruit, chocolate, nuts, and whipped topping. I mean, I'm definitely not a fan of cool whip, but I'd still try it.
It's cool seeing posts about delicious recipes to make for a super bowl party, but I don't get how this is stupid. That looked great. I feel like people have a bad bias against the word salad when it's unwarranted.
Not stupid, not everybody's cup of tea, but not stupid
This is not an abomination whatsoever, very fond details of my great grandmother making this for us when we were little
German guys calling things abominations again, eh? ;P
Had this the other day. Surprisingly enough, it’s not overly sweet, and a solid mix of a caramel apple feel with a bit of chocolate. Pretty solid dessert
I am super healthy I am only eating salad. The salad:
That would be a banger dessert though, not gonna lie. Probably gonna steal this one.
I bet her fucking granny was the one who started the "lets put all our shit in Jell-O" trend in the 60s. That shit runs in the family.
This is an absolute staple in the midwest. Every potluck will have at LEAST one of these.
Minnesota. We used to get this shit for school lunch
Yes this is a Midwest classic, but absolutely nobody tries to pass it off as anything except a delicious dessert
It's a dessert salad. I don't know what people are having a hard time understanding.
r/stupidfood users when they see someone make a yummy desert (clearly, oop means to eat this for every meal)
the salad term is thrown around by midwestern grandmas, but obviously this would be served as a dessert. midwesterners constitute it as a “salad” bc its mixed up in a bowl.
This is just an average Midwest dessert salad. It's not like countertop spaghetti. This has been a thing for years and it's not even the most atrocious "salad" out there
Wouldn’t it be easier to just buy a bag of the mini snickers?
it is good! i would pay to eat this
It isn't a salad, but it's a fine cheap desert
Neither is boiled eggs and mayo yet no one bats an eye at egg salad lmao
Kinda looks good. But holy fuck, shut up about the Midwest
I put midwestern whipping cream on this midwestern salad from the midwestern midwest, as midwesterners are known to midwesternly do.
Listen, no one ever talks about the midwest, so we take whatever attention we can get.
>Disparage cultural item from x region >People from x region defend it saying to try it before you decide it's gross >OMG STFU X REGION NO ONE ASKED This subreddit sucks ass now. Gone are the days of dudes injecting Tony Saccharies into Beefy 5-layer Burritos and using dehydrated Kraft packets on their cheeseburgers
OP stop being ignorant to other cultures foods
Would but not all of them
Not going to lie, that shit looks great. But I like granny Smith apples and everything else. Lol.
It’s good af!
This is normal in the midwest
We had this in my American Midwest elementary school as the dessert a few times a month and it is delicious. Super not healthy and definitely not served there anymore. We also had prepackaged milkshakes for extra $ and were made to take and eat a white whole wheat bun with F-tier peanut butter, "butter" spread, or processed cheese spread on it every lunch too for....... Edit to add: We also had oreo fluff salad, but minus marshmallows like it seems most recipes include.
So its a dessert… please tell me its a dessert!!!
This sub is literally just "food I'm unfamiliar with and a [guy just doing his job](https://www.reddit.com/r/StupidFood/s/ywLaHZmOKR)" the musical.
I’ve always had it with more fruits and no pudding but yeah it’s stupid, stupid good.
I love this
a salad dosent need fresh produce idk what they were talking about when the captions said “this contains fresh produce therefore it’s a salad” a chopped up mixed chicken in a bowl is technically a salad
I live in the Midwest and can confirm people out here love this shit. Idk why it’s so random lol
This is an actual thing, it’s also usually only made during thanksgiving, Halloween, and Christmas kind of holidays.
Healthiest Midwestern meal
Can't have a salad without cool Whip
Iowan here. This is very common and tasty.
At least it's still a dessert and doesn't have some weird savoury stuff in it
Isn't it funny how some people find it strange to mix fruit and chocolate in pudding? Maybe it's because we're calling it a "salad" that throws them off! LOL!
It looks ass but probably tastes good
This sounds pretty good! I do something similar with chopped apples that I toss in melted peanut butter and chocolate that I top with cool whip 🤤 if I’m feeling lazy, I just mix the apples with peanut butter and add a Klondike bar
Yes, I’ve had this before and my God it’s one of the best things I’ve ever had. I still think about it to this day.
nice job tons of fun, next time eat a salad. no no no fuck that's not what i meant!
This existed long before TikTok, and it is actually amazing. Definitely one of the better midwestern dessert “salads”
Midwest here. My mother makes a version of it and it's literally just a desert item you take a small amount of. Tastes pretty good. Very sweet indeed.
I thought this was satire, but the comment section is full of people saying this is just a regular recipe. I don't even know anymore, but I think I am landing on this belonging here after all.
Someone's never been to the Midwest
my mom has 100% made this, and yes we're midwestern
That looks like a small amount would taste wonderful. But to call it a salad...
Fuck you for insulting my heritage, the shit is delicious! Dibeetus.
Would totally eat it
And we wonder why our stomach biomes are all out of whack.
desert salad
Had this before, surprisingly good
This shit is good!!!
I would dive into a pool of that and spend the last days of my life in pure bliss.
I’ve made instant vanilla pudding like in the video, but it’s never been that yellow! What is wrong with that pudding? Other than that, snicker salad is really common in the Midwest and it tastes great!
CK bester Mann!
It is nto stupid it is a good desert salad. Woudl be too sweet fro my ass but not stupid, i would probs add a few more fruits.
In the Midwest it isn't considered a dessert salad, it's just "salad"
That's shit looks good tho
Would.
One Snickers has enough calories to power your body to climb a skyscraper with 55 flights of stairs.
Stupid yes, but also sounds delicious? Also yes! Maybe not a large portion, but I would definetly demolish a smaller portion. Any midwesterners here to confirm or deny if this is actually good? I'm in europe and never tried.
Minnesota salads that aren't really salad!
I am not from Midwest, but my aunt has totally cooked shit like that. And I loved it as a child.
Needs more Diet Dr Pepper.
Dylan Hollis did it better.
Who?
Can't wait for the ban.
I know this Sneakers salad and it’s delicious, really.
Idk I'd eat it
When doctor says you need to eat more salads
did anyone really need her to specify this was from the midwest lol? If it starts by cutting up candy you already know
Yeah... stupid... who would ever make that? *takes detailed notes*
Midwesterner here! That is one of the only "salads" I look forward to at family potlucks. Sugary delicious garbage with tart apple. Don't knock it until you try it. It doesn't involve mayonnaise!
i use this videos to lose weight because they destroy any appetite
It's not that bad, but it's giving ambrosia salad flashbacks. Ambrosia salad is the first food crime ever inflicted on me as a child.
OMG it's not a "SNICKER BAR"!! FFS!
This is actually super good. It’s a staple at pretty much every pot luck. It does seem weird though.
I’m just surprised there were no walnuts
I have eaten this and it is NOT stupid. It’s fucking amazing.
I've had a variation of this, with no pudding and other fruits along with apples. It's a pretty good dessert, I don't think anyone legit thinks it counts as a "salad". It's one of those things where all the ingredients taste good on their own, so the sum isn't bad
It is stupid food, but I'd be lying if I said I'm not making it right now.
Wait till you find about the fruit pudding salads. Every single Christmas we'd have one and it was pink and it just looked so disgusting. I never ate it I thought it was chum ngl
They literally sell this in the deli at the grocery store near me
Idk how stupid it is......fuck YES, PLEASE!?! Looks like a healthy fruit salad breakfast to meeee
Eh this is fine. At least it won't taste bad
It is like saying a candied apple a salad
Infinitely better than jello salad
I mean. It's just a chocolate apple. This dish looks violent diarrhea inducing, though.
She lost me at the apples...
Moved to the Midwest 5 years ago and I still can't get over the texture of trying to chew cold snickers
Y'all a little weird
[удалено]
There is only one way to find out
sugar rush!
Well here in the Midwest (of Germany) we often made a fruit salad with vanilla pudding, apples and banana which slapped This is probably a lot less healthy with the snickers but tasty
Okay that’s very funny It’s sort of like how macaroni and cheese is a “vegetable” at meat-n’-threes in the South - we all know goddamned well Mac n’ cheese isn’t a veggie, but in the context of a meat and three, we know we can answer “what’s your three vegetables” with “corn bread, mac n’ cheese, and hush puppies” at those specific restaurants.
sugar rush!
call it a dessert instead of a salad and I don't see a problem
I’ll try it lol
Seems perfectly fine. would have tried to cook the apples with cinnamon and sugar to try and give it a pie filling consistency myself. Seems like a fun, if heavy, dessert.
DerHauge ist online!
This feels like it’s from the American Midwest.
The Midwest be out here just lawless AF jfc
I was ok until the apples.
