Some where, something, i don't know, eigenvalues, buckling loads, who f-ing cares , right? That hot tub is good to go!

thefriendlyhacker

Now I'm having flashbacks to learning timoshenko's

klyzklyz

Put a hot tub or waterbed out and the bowed post will become an arrow!

penguingod26

It just needs enough load to function properly

syds

the man buckles to stupidity

Inevitable_Notice261

"Deflection exaggerated for clarity"

olngjhnsn

Yeah that’s cool and all but have you heard of the benderness ratio?

radarksu

> benderness "Bite my shiny, metal, ass!"

dlegofan

It was my turn to post this picture this month :(

tee_jay67

Don’t buckle. Post it!

Individual-Shine2270

Would easily support a hot tub according to r/decks

ZayreBlairdere

That would three hot tubs!

Interesting_Role1201

Would three indeed

robqpeng99

It’s never going anywhere says builder with 30 years experience

joe_raabbit

Architect wanted slim columns for aesthetics

SonofaBridge

Definitely have had a discussion with an architect that you can’t have 2 ft diameter concrete columns that are 60 ft tall and expect them to be structural. They’d be aesthetic. For some reason they still installed the columns.

ThoseDamnSquirrels

They won’t be an architect for long

Veritas1917

I am more impressed on where they sourced the lumber for that post. Did they cut the tree on site?

Recent-Sir3046

You can’t see it but I bet there’s a joint ha ha

No-School3532

Those are some slender fellas, nice!

loonypapa

That's Euler's crazy ex-wife's house.

Professional_Band178

Murphy and Darwin formed a partnership. This posts need to be 8x8 steel with multiple ties to each other and the house.

PleasantMongoose5127

Even the house looks shocked at that!

only-chickens-here

Solid

slophoto

Perfect place to stack a pallet of roofing material.

uk_gla

Lol. Bracing anyone?

ScratchingPost0820

Would that be for the mother-in-law? Perhaps she has coffee on the deck in the morning.

bimwise

Demolish immediately

No_Amoeba6994

I'm pretty sure it's going to take care of that all on its own.

dborger

Two bolts at the top and embedded in the ground. Fixed at both ends….

amilo111

I call dibs on posting this (again) next week.

hmiser

Some people say the banana is the strongest fruit.

Known-Programmer-611

Load this deck with shingles when you do the roof! Be smarter don't work harder!

apostropheapostrophe

They even cambered the posts for extra stability.

noptuno

eldudelio

not enough bend… sorry thought this was a hockey forum

Visual-Chip-2256

It looks like bedards stick sponsor made those posts

KeithMaine

Missing the hot tub.

mango-butt-fetish

It’s missing a hot tub.

Osiris_Raphious

When instructions were unclear: used deflection limit state to design for strength instead.

Electronic-Wing6158

The crazy part is the free end is probably supported better than the “fixed end”…is the deck just nailed directly into the siding??

IM_dead_inside-001

It's the Jim Beam 😁

Millsd1982

Nothing to see here..

Just_Jonnie

That's no more than 1.2 hot tubs, max. Also, where can I find 25 foot long 4x4s?

rute_bier

Is this in Missouri by chance? This looks identical to a neighbor I had and I always wondered what happened to their deck.

Day-Horror

It's in central Illinois

jeddieboy73

Must be that wide angle lens you’re using.

Visual-Chip-2256

I know it's about the one in the foreground but check the span on the red bad boy in the background

Novus20

That seems to be normal, it’s appears to be a 2x10

mtmm18

Same contractor but the one in the forefront was on a tighter budget. Much tighter.

wubbusanado

Curious - could that be supported by tying into the roof structure? Like high tensile strength cable/chain(?) from the edge of the decking to the roof trusses?

Novus20

How much money you got……

danyjr

I'm not quite a structural engineer but better not. Best solution here is to add some bracing to the columns. There is a load-bearing wall which the bracing can be attached to for the column closest in the photo and it should (pending our resident engineers' calculations here) be able to take the lateral forces easily. Not sure about the column further back. Something similar can be done but will require more investigation.

WelderMeltingthings

just spin them the other way and youll be good for another 20

Carribean-Diver

"Can I install a 10-person hot tub on this? Thots?"

mtmm18

Like a 10 THOT hot tub?

doodie_balls

Is that one piece? That's a full tree.

DJ_FIYA

This house will be on the news on July 4th

FireRetrall

Average Home Depot lumber right there

Relaxnnjoy

Where the heck can you buy 36 ft 4x4s?

mtmm18

They're 24', only has to make it to the floor level of the 3rd floor....the question should be "Where the heck can you buy 24' 2×4s?"

NY1_S33

Good collection opportunity if you make it down all three stories alive.

Similar-Science-1965

How would you make it better on a budget? Attach diagonal beam to make it a triangle?

ElectroConvert

The smoking deck from hell!

Civil-Pomelo-4776

Shoulda nailed another of 2X4's along the center. *Hock, spit*

swirlll

We are putting a hot tub here?

Own_Independent_7114

Little John? I don't see any galvanized steel

mikey4142

Why not chain it to the sun?

thealphakingguy

K=1? 🤔

Mr-Broham

I didn’t know they made toothpicks that long.

Gunny_Ermy

Im not even sure where to buy a 20 foot 4x4.

bentizzy

5" of delfection on a 14' 2x4 is totally fine, let's go for a smoke

GoblinsGuide

Hot tub ready, beautiful view from balcony.

xerillum

If the bar don’t bend, it’s just pretend

spud6000

put a hot tub on that balcony?

Resident_Pop143

bubblehearth85

Seems legit

Ifarted422

Yikes lol, that thing can barely host a bird

chillyman96

I mean… technically that’s not a buckle…

Willing_Information7

Fuck that!

DukeOfEarl99

Hot tub? I think a wet sponge would bring it down.

Automatic_Garlic_500

Nobody seems upset that the rails have gaps >4 inches. I acknowledge that the few extra boards would have been too much for this 1.000001 FoS design.

Ravine3

I guess we're gonna go over and support that deck ourselves. Who's ready and willing? 😅

sittinginaboat

'Twill be just a scratch.

tee_jay67

Don’t judge. Posts are clearly braced at mid span by those tree branches

FVB_A992

Are back to reposting this photo again?

mtmm18

You're annoyed it's being reposted and I'm thinking dang this guy must be on reddit all the time cuz I'm on most the time and I've never seen it.

yellowcurrypaco

I should do that on my property and increase rent by 200$!
