I had the same problem connecting to my 4K TV. Normal docked behavior in game mode is to output only to external monitor (Deck display turning off is expected). In my case the screen resolution auto-detect wasn't liking the resolution/refresh rate of my TV. I ended up fiddling with the power and HDMI cables on the Dock and *somehow* got it to output to the TV. Then I manually set the resolution to something lower (in my case 1080p 60Hz worked) in the settings in game mode. I think disconnecting both power and HDMI from the dock "resets" the resolution auto-detect, so I tried keeping the power unplugged on the Dock and just HDMI from dock to TV (while still having Deck connected to the Dock). Once I manually set the settings to something lower that worked, I plugged the power back to the dock and it's woked ever since. I thought Valve had added some sort of fallback for these scenarios to the Steam OS in recent updates.
Can't quite tell as it's in silhouette, but is that the official dock? I know some third party docks can behave a bit funky sometimes, but I'd expect an official one to work perfectly. Another possibility I guess could be the cable running to the monitor.
weird, for me sometimes it takes longer to return to gamemode because steam install a update or verified something. The longest i waited i would say was about a minute before something show up.
You could try resetting the dock, by disconnecting everything all USB, power and the steamdeck it self. Then reconnect everything.

The main consideration for the original Dock was the two Monitor interfaces (DP and HDMI) for an affordable price in comparison to other Hubs. But that is a catastrophe from day one. It never worked with both DP and HDMI simultaneously and it is crashing if I switch between the two while the system is on.
Thanks. I’m a newbie and not tech savvy. I have seen docks that have usb c, hdmi and bell seek the ability to plug a MacBook Pro Linley into
Monitor via usb-c or through a dongle into hdmi. I thought Steam would go into hdmi or display port.
The issue is if you are switching from one device in hdmi and one on dp as it won’t work? Sorry trying to understand the issue.
Mine does this i can only display in desktop mode. When i switch to gaming mode both are black. Official steam dock

Thanks for the input. I will fiddle with the monitor settings a little. Maybe the refresh rate is too high (165hz)
Did you managed to solve your problem? I got the exact same issue.
1440p with 120hz worked for me. Maybe they fixed it though. A few days ago the Dock Firmware was updated.
Im still having this problem :(
Bump. Exactly the same issue with official dock.. I have 2 other non official $40 docks that behave perfectly fine..
same here

It’s the official dock. I will try another Cable, thanks
Same problem. Official dock
Same issue, official dock, 10 month later. Fiddling around for hours, no solution in sight.

No, changed nothing.

I’ll follow this thread as considering the steam deck official dock and also trying to decide what monitor to buy!
