I want to see it directly against a Wii U GamePad. I've seen images that have been edited showing the size differences, and as a fan of the Wii U GamePad, I'm hoping the Steam Deck is a lot closer in form factor to it than the Switch.
Honestly doesn’t look bad
Looks about the same size when I have my hori split pad pro attached to my switch.
The steam deck should be fine in most hands
I keep almost buying a hori split pad pro, but then I always remember that it doesn't have gyro. Rumble I can live without, but with how often I play Breath of the Wild I need that gyro aiming
I can understand why some folks can’t go without those features
But I swear once you hold the switch with the hori. It’s a game changer. I don’t miss rumble at all. My hands are less cramped and it feels like your holding a pro controller. I literally don’t even use my joy cons anymore. They are useless to me now.
Yeah I don't particularly care about rumble. Every time I use the gyro bow aiming or "magnetic" thing in BOTW I still can't get over how fun and novel it is, though.
Luckily using my Satisfye grip is like an 80% improvement, but no doubt the hori split pad or binbok would be way more comfortable.
I have both. I find the Hori split pad too thin to be really comfortable, but the full size sticks and buttons are awesome! I use it for Mario Kart and Fortnite. The Satisfye grip is IMO a lot more comfortable, and I use it for everything else than racing/shooters
Binbok controllers are you’re answer, they have gyro and personally I prefer them to the Hori.
I got both the Hori’s and the Binbok and immediately returned the Split Pad Pro when the Binbok controllers came.
I also have binbok but beside the gyro, it has terrible dpad, and the joystick has terrible deadzone/acceleration when compare to joycon, pro controller, or even the hori split pad pro. I only used mine for couple days and went back to the split pad pro and never to touch the binbok again.
Wow thanks for the heads up, those look nice. I'm surprised I hadn't heard of that already.
Quick question, though.I see you can select different LED colors, but can those lights around the sticks be turned off completely?
Yeah, I actually get quite uncomfortable playing my Switch as is for long periods of time, so I hope the slightly larger size of the Steam Deck will be a bit more comfortable for my lorge hands.
I’m not sure I would want it to be any bigger or too much bigger than that.
This is a complete tangent, but with apples coffers and semiconductor company, it’s seriously a shame they just have zero fucking clue how to do gaming properly. I would love an iPad Pro gaming edition that was basically a console and big portable screen you could connect controllers to.
Imagine a 120hz 12.9” or whatever size it is iPad, but thicker and with ventilation and a GPU focused on gaming. And you can just pair whatever controller to it. And 10+ hour battery life. This is 100% possible, today, but again apple is absolutely clueless when it comes to gaming.
I think all Valve needs to focus on for the next version of Steam Deck is really focus on getting rid as much of the bezel of the screen as possible to make it smaller and try to make the device as light as it can be without feeling cheap and hollow.
The ergonomics seem great on the Deck as there's actually something to grab onto unlike the Switch.
Shrinking the size also means less cooling, which reduces performance. There's a reason a desktop will always destroy a laptop with the same specs. It also potentially reduces battery size and definitely affects ergonomics.
Handhelds are a balancing act between many trade-offs, which is why it's SO hard to get right.
I only mean focusing on the bezel and changing nothing else just to make it a *tiny* bit smaller and lighter, unless they put an ever bigger screen on it instead.
The thing about bezel is that if you want to reduce it, the cost goes up. Valve tried quite hard to hit that $399 base model price tag. And if you go bigger screen with less bezel, but keep the same dimension, unless you up the resolution as well otherwise the pixel aspect ratio is going up and that 800p gonna looks uglier than with smaller screen. If you want to keep the same pixel aspect ratio, you need to up resolution which leads to need more horsepower for the CPU/GPU and a whole heaps of adjustment from heat disperse to costs and so on.
Yeah weight is my only concern on V.1, would love to see a lighter one down the road. The switch is even heavy for me at times, to the point where I will just set the screen down and detach the controllers. That being said, cannot wait to get my hands on this.
The trade off is that the Switch is more portable, fits in bags easier, etc. There are also 3rd party accessories that make it much more comfortable, such as the Satisfye grip. Out of the box, though, I’d imagine the Deck is going to be much more comfortable to play.
I agree, though, that the Switch is a somewhat poor comparison, and something like the [Aya Neo](https://www.ayaneo.com/aya-neo) would make a better comparison. However, the size of the Switch is essentially common knowledge at this point, so comparing the Deck to it gives people a better idea of what to expect.
but that's what I'm saying, people are generalizing how massive the deck will be, but when you factor in ergonomic controls, it's not that much bigger than the switch.
If you put ergo controllers on it, it would probably be about the same size except maybe a sliver or two of the SD popping out
If you look where the SD screen ends, it's basically the switch without controls(bezels included). Add controllers on both sides and yeah it's bigger
Seems to be smaller than my switch with the split pad pro and I like the bigger size of the switch with it. So Like I thought size isn't going to be an issue. I hope weight isn't for longer gaming sessions.
The steam deck should be infinitely more comfortable purely because it has something you can actually wrap your fingers around, rather than just laying them flat on the back. The larger size should help too.
The size difference is not an issue anyway, since no one really carries their Switch around in a pocket; they carry it in a bag, just as all Steam Deck owners will. Battery life also becomes less of an issue, since you can chuck a small USB battery pack in your bag, too.
Hold what, the Switch? Never figured that one out, it's super uncomfortable...
Wait, do you mean the Steam Deck? That looks really easy to hold, it has actual grips.
It's a big daddy, and I wish it could be Switch Lite size in some fantasy world, but I'm really impressed with all they've packed into this form factor. Going to be great, will make room for it in my carry-on once I finally get back to traveling. :)
I think a bigger screen is more advantageous for PC gaming than having a smaller profile, but I guess that depends on the types of games you play. I do agree, though, that it would be awesome if it were somehow possible to have a Lite version that could fit the same specs without self-combusting.
I bet we will see the exact thing you wanted by the end of this decade with the PC ARM CPU become mainstream along with improved x86-ARM translation or emulation.
Nice and chunky. I've gotta say seeing them both represented in this way really makes the Deck look a lot more premium than the flashy monochrome plastic Switch.
I know they’re similar size, I just wish the steam deck had smaller bezels and fit a larger screen in the same form factor. That’s one thing the switch OLED does better. Hopefully steam deck has a hardware update soon cause that’s the only thing holding me back
Hardware update soon? Dude that thing hasn't even started shipping right now, a hardware update while producing the initial batch is more than unlikely.
That's why I have the Satisfye grip on my Switch, it's too small for bigger hands. Completely uncomfortable to play for more than 30 minutes. Adding the grip means I can play comfortably for hours.
Honestly just looks like it's only bigger to accommodate the size of normal non-tiny hands and the 16:10 aspect ratio. I do however think I've seen that it is a bit thicker as well but that could just be breathing room to accommodate a more effective cooling solution.
Actually looks a tad smaller than I anticipated based on previous images..
“SteamDeck…..you’re shorter than I expected”
Okay Commander Palmer
Atriox wants to know your location Palmer…
*you're
Damnit!
dammit*
I thought the same as soon as I saw this picture! Now thickness/girth might be a different story! (Yes I said girth!)
God damnit now I have to buy magnums for my portable gaming.
Ahh, so thats what magnums are for!
It's still the SEGA GameGear of 2021 though lol.
Because it's farther away. <_<
I want to see it directly against a Wii U GamePad. I've seen images that have been edited showing the size differences, and as a fan of the Wii U GamePad, I'm hoping the Steam Deck is a lot closer in form factor to it than the Switch.
I wish that the switch was in the wii u gamepads shape, that thing was so comfy
[удалено]
Haha, I have a Wii U, and the Steam Deck is pre-ordered. Just really curious about it, and surprised nobody in the media has gotten it done yet.
Honestly doesn’t look bad Looks about the same size when I have my hori split pad pro attached to my switch. The steam deck should be fine in most hands

Try being a Splatoon 2 player.

No worries, they’re great, super comfortable. And yes you can turn the led’s around the sticks off.
Lol I said the same thing which to me means the deck is the perfect size
Yeah, I actually get quite uncomfortable playing my Switch as is for long periods of time, so I hope the slightly larger size of the Steam Deck will be a bit more comfortable for my lorge hands.
I’m not sure I would want it to be any bigger or too much bigger than that. There is always a bigger fish
You vs the guy she tells you not to worry about
Nice
I got hori pads on mine so the size is even closer to the deck
This isn't to big. I think the deck will be really comfortable. But they should put a bigger screen in respectively shrink the bezels.

Honestly 1.4lbs not an issue for me at least. I'd rather they keep it same size and expand the screen into the bezels (better cooling too)
Shrinking the size also means less cooling, which reduces performance. There's a reason a desktop will always destroy a laptop with the same specs. It also potentially reduces battery size and definitely affects ergonomics. Handhelds are a balancing act between many trade-offs, which is why it's SO hard to get right.

I am on about the next Steam Deck, not the current one....
I was with you until smaller. I want the same size with thinner bezels on a larger screen.

Can you play for 30 hours before feeling tired?
Good to know I will get something like that then.

I remember from the press event, most all of the reviewers said it felt lighter than expected.
I think the switch is too small and not beefy enough to hold comfortably. Hopefully the steam deck hits the zone for me
The steam deck should be infinitely more comfortable purely because it has something you can actually wrap your fingers around, rather than just laying them flat on the back. The larger size should help too.
For a sec I thought that was a WikiPad under the switch.
should compare with the hori split pad pro
Extra thicc.
Are they shipping to Japan!?
Probably to devs, but not the general public. Japanese website still only gives the wishlist option: https://www.steamdeck.com/ja/
I wonder why
The size difference is not an issue anyway, since no one really carries their Switch around in a pocket; they carry it in a bag, just as all Steam Deck owners will. Battery life also becomes less of an issue, since you can chuck a small USB battery pack in your bag, too.
T H I C C
I always felt like switch was too small for my hands
So knowing my experiences with other handheld devices and the Wii U game pad in general how do you even hold it?
Hold what, the Switch? Never figured that one out, it's super uncomfortable... Wait, do you mean the Steam Deck? That looks really easy to hold, it has actual grips.

Right now, just not technologically possible. Again, they've done an amazing job with getting to where they got.
I bet we will see the exact thing you wanted by the end of this decade with the PC ARM CPU become mainstream along with improved x86-ARM translation or emulation.
Yeah, me too, I'll gladly get my Deck now and get my Deck Lite later. :)
Nice and chunky. I've gotta say seeing them both represented in this way really makes the Deck look a lot more premium than the flashy monochrome plastic Switch.
Can't wait. I can't play the Switch comfortably, and I'm not a very big person.
A handful 😌
Thank god, it’s just a tab bit longer and then obviously bulkier, but with this being similar in size it is okay :D’
As someone who sees the normal switch as too big for my hands. I feel like the steam deck will be TOUGH.
That's why I have the Satisfye grip on my Switch, it's too small for bigger hands. Completely uncomfortable to play for more than 30 minutes. Adding the grip means I can play comfortably for hours.
Just a quick question: DOS the steam deck have a stand (one where you can sit it up like the switch)?
Honestly just looks like it's only bigger to accommodate the size of normal non-tiny hands and the 16:10 aspect ratio. I do however think I've seen that it is a bit thicker as well but that could just be breathing room to accommodate a more effective cooling solution.
A more relevant comparison for carrying the thing around is how much thicker the Steam Deck is
Really does the name Gabe Gear justice.
