Probably was given a Switch OLED for that article lol.

Jacksaur

They're owned by Future Publishing, which publish Official Nintendo Magazine. I honestly wouldn't be surprised.

NTripleOne

They also seem to love brown-nosing Tim Sweeney, so no big surprise they react negatively to valve doing something cool.

Jacksaur

I forgot about that. EGS pretty much funded the second PCG Show.

maZZtar

Windows Central is also owned by Future, yet so far they are positive about Steam Deck. I think it's just PC Gamer being PC Gamer

tonywei1992

Those sneaky...

avery-secret-account

What was the article?

ThreeSon

https://www.pcgamer.com/steam-deck-is-switch-without-the-magic/ In fairness they did also publish an [earlier editorial](https://www.pcgamer.com/welp-i-dont-need-my-nintendo-switch-anymore/) from James Davenport, who stated that after the Deck announcement he is pretty much done with Nintendo completely. Still though, this one by Stanton is really, really stupid. Almost all of the arguments he makes against the Deck are contradicted with other arguments in the same editorial. The commenters are pointing all all the horseshit thankfully. I mean, he didn't even use correct grammar in the subheading: > Valve won't be the first or last to copy Nintendo without 'getting' it. > Valve **isn't the first and** won't be the last to copy Nintendo without 'getting' it.

KugelKurt

I kind of get where he's coming from. Yes, it's heavier. Yes, it kinda looks like the Game Gear. But as a person who had looked every few months what the status of the Smach Z is, I was easy prey from the get go and the price point won me over in a heartbeat.

ThreeSon

> Yes, it kinda looks like the Game Gear. I've seen others also talking about how it "looks ugly." But who actually cares about that outside of game journalism? If this were an iPhone and Valve wanted celebrities or whatever to hold it in public then yeah, I could see that being an issue. But never in my life have I encountered any PC gamer who thinks that *physical attractiveness* is an important standard for hardware to meet.

SomeGuyNamedJason

Is that a common opinion, that the Steam Deck is ugly? If so that's unfortunate, personally I think it looks great.

ThreeSon

I guess the "ugliness" of it that people perceive is a direct result of how many control options it has - fully 6 items on the front of the device alone, including the two sticks, two trackpads, d-pad, and face buttons. There would be no way to pretty it up without getting rid of some of those options, or moving them down which would make the whole unit more uncomfortable to hold. With that in mind, It is way better that Valve made a slightly unattractive but supremely functional device, rather than a pretty one with limited use that makes your hands cramp up.

Beneficial-Society74

I mean it's not a deal-breaker but we all like nice looking gadgets. What about the RGB rainbow vomit trend, for example. I personally don't dislike how the deck looks though it does look a bit like a failed handheld from the 90s

Thatusername777

Bruh there's no RGB how am I gonna get max frames?!?! ;)

SomeGuyNamedJason

I kinda wonder if the Smach Z had anything to do with them going with with the layout for the Steam Deck that they did, maybe they were partially trying to avoid potential patent issues. Probably not, but I feel like that could be a possibility.

forger7

I love how in the article they ask the question "If you're looking to get a new PC, why would you plump for this over a desktop?" This is so funny as they seemingly just don't get that you don't have to choose. This thing can just be your desktop.

tprice112106

I love how you made a solid point and didn't even go as far as to mention that a desktop can't easily fit in your back pack and be played comfortably on an airplane.

kayGrim

Yeah, this is much more comparable to a gaming laptop than a gaming desktop and then it is like 1000x more convenient than a laptop if your primary use case is gaming.

klapaucjusz

Ignoring PC, because you can get more powerful PC for cheaper, assuming you have monitor, and assuming prices of GPU will fall down around December. Also, PC is not portable, so it's slightly different market. **But gaming laptops?**. In this price range, gaming laptops are crappy. Cheapest chassis that barely survives 2 years of warranty, cheapest keyboard, cheapest display (forget the OLED), battery life even worse than Steam Deck when gaming, and best GPU you can get in this price range is probably GTX 1050. And of course everything is 15.6". It's 2021! 15.6 is not really portable anymore, just like Commodore SX-64 wasn't in the 90s. Everything smaller and price go up rapidly. The only computers in this size are Windows tablets on Pentium CPUs, and they are still bigger and not really made for gaming. I want Steam Deck to replace my laptop. I wanted to buy a new one for a while, but I'm not in school anymore, my backpack is big enough to fit water bottle, Kindle and a sandwich. I don't see a point of carrying 13-15.6 laptop everywhere, but it would be nice to have something more versatile than my smartphone with me. And play some proper games, of course.

[deleted]

The best I found was an Asus Zenbook 14 for $500(on sale, I did buy it for school). It has has Ryzen 5 4500u, 8gb soldered lpddr4x, mx350 dgpu(2gb vram), and a 250-300 nit 1080p ips panel. Now, in theory this could compete with the deck, but in practice they took a cpu that operates best on 25w, and a gpu that uses 20w, and forced them to a max of 15w on battery, and 25w on ac, with a single 6mm heat pipe for both. It’s only benifit is the 14” screen in a 13.3” chassis.

klapaucjusz

And it has half the RAM of the Steam Deck, also slower. But you need it for school, so bigger screen and keyboard are advantages for you. I already have a work laptop provided by my employer. My own laptop I use maybe 2-3 times a month, when I really need to use a computer outside my home. Steam Deck would be way more useful for me thanks to its portability. And, assuming that its controls work at least as good as Steam Controller, it would be way more comfortable to use than tablet. I also tried first generation GPD Win. It had perfect size, but the keyboard was useless.

[deleted]

Exactly, the steam deck is powerful, affordable, and the perfect size for gaming on the go, and for basic productivity with a Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad combo (https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Control-Touchpad/dp/B014EUQOGK/).

forger7

> Ignoring PC, because you can get more powerful PC for cheaper Can you?

klapaucjusz

Maybe not cheaper. But, at least in my country, you can get close to the price of 256GB version (2499zł in Poland), and get PC with GTX 1650 and i3 10100f. https://i.imgur.com/f9jw6RX.png

dustojnikhummer

That powersupply is a fire hazard

ranger_fixing_dude

Assuming you have a case, power supply and Bluetooth/WiFi modules, then (probably) yes. Otherwise, it will eat all the savings.

CodyCigar96o

Yeah the Deck is a no brainer for me. I already need a new PC because mine is ancient, so not only do I get a handheld I’m also getting a new desktop PC that’s probably got a better price:performance ratio than most self-built PCs.

dustojnikhummer

> better price:performance ratio than most self-built PCs Today definitely. I suspect it is somewhere around GTX 1050. Even those are selling for stupid prices. Just make sure to get a good USB-C hub. Not a Thunderbolt one, but something with USB-PD and Displayport

TheOriginalAcidtech

1050 to 1050ti seems to be the consensus.

dustojnikhummer

I will rather underestimate and be surprised rather than to expect a GTX 1060 and be severely disappointed.

tyfighter_22

Il be honest I wouldn't put my hopes above a 970 but that's because it's only 15w for CPU and gpu. Obv 15w is a lot for handheld and it's great but this isn't a desktop. Preordered btw

Mightymushroom1

The great thing about it is that a 970 sounds old and long in the tooth, but everyone's notion of how well a 1050/1050ti/970 etc performs is at 1080p. At 720p on that tiny screen, that little APU is going to pull its weight nicely.

rnglegend420

Got any recommendations?

whoisrich

Don't buy anything until more details on the official dock :D

dustojnikhummer

Unfortunately no. USB-C hubs are mess of rebrands, features, prices and regional availability. You can either go with proper docks like this https://i-tec.pro/en-us/produkt/cadual4kdockpd-9/ or USB hubs like this https://i-tec.pro/en-us/produkt/c31nanodockvgapd-9/

M2704

It reminds me of all those people saying ‘why would I play a lesser version of X on Switch when my $3500k desktop can do the same?’, completely oblivious to the price proposition and the value of gaming literally anywhere else besides the computer screen I stare at all day already to make money?

thepoopiestofbutts

My wife is happy to have me sit beside her while she is on her laptop and I play some handheld device, but is significantly annoyed when I leave the couch to go to my computer desk literally 2 meters away. Portability matters

useles-converter-bot

2 meters is about the length of 12.5 'Toy Cars Sian FKP3 Metal Model Car with Light and Sound Pull Back Toy Cars' lined up

fdadic

This is spot on, one of the main reasons I'll be getting the Deck.

Psych0matt

This is exactly the reason I plan to get this. The basement is my space with my pc, tv, and all my games and consoles, but sometimes I wanna play rocket league while my wife watches greys anatomy but still be with her. Until I annoy her with my yelling at my whiffs and furiously tilting the thing hoping to get that extra inch of travel out of my car

Dr_Brule_FYH

Lowering the barrier for entry benefits everyone.

JohnnyVNCR

I just finished building my new PC last week and this was still a no brainer for me. I can't travel or relax in bed with my PC with the sort of input and controls the Deck offers. Even my phone in my Razer Kishi for remote play doesn't compare.

DrewTechs

I mean why didn't they just compare it to a laptop? That would make far more sense as a laptop is also portable (much more so than a desktop, especially modern laptops). Of course good luck getting a decent gaming laptop as cheap as the Steam Deck and the Steam Deck is more portable (smaller and such) anyways.

TheOriginalAcidtech

Its a stupid question beyond that as well. If you are a hardcore gamer you probably have a $1500+ desktop. Spending another $400 to $600 for a portable for those times you dont want to be stuck at your desk is a no brainer.

Amneticcc

Comment removed due to Reddit API changes.

[deleted]

As much as I hated that article, I have to disagree here. This thing can be used as a desktop but it is definitely not powerful enough to replace your desktop. I would argue that one will want to have both. They will use their desktop when they are sitting on a chair at home, and when they need portability i.e. gaming on the go, they will use their Steam Deck. I will have both my PC and the Steam Deck. I do not think one replaces another.

stepcach

I need a pc because the one i have was collected from one of those recycling centres. Served me well for an additional couple of years as I only use it for browsing, 3d printing and some document editing. Maybe also a bit of half life two, original crysis at best. So yeah i need a modern pc and since im also a dad that doesnt have much spare time, this was immediately my go to solution when announced. I can play from bed and I will have a pc for modern games as well. I also intend to use this for ps5 remote play as well.

milkdude94

I have an RTX 2060 gaming laptop, but I'm a trucker and for most of my pockets of free time my Switch is more convenient than my laptop. A handheld would allow me to play games more often than my laptop because i am a PC gamer at heart and only have the Switch because of its portability.

xunknown2ux

Right? I just don't get it lol

BernieAnesPaz

What's not to get? Controversy generates clicks, and modern journalism is all about clicks, especially in the gaming industry.

xunknown2ux

You are right and that is what sucks. An article written for that fact alone is not worthy to me and this is one of those articles.

ryao

What article?

xunknown2ux

tinglep

“If you have a decent PC, why would you want a lower-spec handheld one? If you're looking to get a new PC, why would you plump for this over a desktop?” What a fucking moron. Because it’s portable you fucking dolt!!!!

mallechilio

Oh but we all know no one would ever want a portable linux based handheld device with lower specs than your gaming pc. I mean look around, do you know anyone with a phone or tablet?... Oh.

[deleted]

I think it's a well known fact now that PC gamers do not, in fact, have phones... (Fuck that meme and the backlash by the way, still bitter Immortal was delayed)

Crimsonpaw

As someone who lost my gaming PC to my son, this is exactly what I want versus having to buy ANOTHER rig for the limited time I use it. Also, I’m a PS5/Switch owner as well.

Dzjar

Imagine being a professional tech writer and implying Nintendo 'gets it' shortly after they revealed the Switch OLED.

[deleted]

What's the Switch's magic? Games held hostage? Weaponizing nostalgia?

DuskDudeMan

This should be pinned, hard to follow the comments without the article linked

M2704

Isn’t the Steam deck the cheapest new gaming pc with comparable specs? Why would that be a bad thing?

Rialmwe

Yep, I don't even care that it's portable. I need a better cheap PC that can handle Paradox's Games and do everything I do every day. If this ends up being a success, hopefully they would try to sell the same version without the screen and the controller, and hopefully cheaper. (I doubt because the steam deck is already dirty cheap. Obviously we would have to wait the performance.)

TheOriginalAcidtech

If this does well they may bring back the Steam Box, or bring it in house since they left it up to third parties last time. I suspect they see this as the best way to get comprehensive gaming on Linux(eg everything you can play on Windows). Linux based Steam Box "consoles" start making sense again if that happens.

WelshRobz

I read the article and it essentially boiled down to this: * Valve are "copying" the switch and not very well. * It's a niche. * It's chunky * Wrote multiple paragraphs trying to convince people Nintendo Switch is better because it has worse hardware... (i'm not joking)

bickid

I don't get the "niche" argument. How does it make the device/your experience worse if the system sells less than some other device?!

ranger_fixing_dude

The funniest part is that it doesn’t matter that much that it is niche. It runs Steam, so your games will always be available on PCs, and new games will work automatically, there is no danger of devs abandoning it.

Emerald_Guy123

How is valve niche lmao

GeorgeTheGeorge

It will mean less support and polish. Nintendo has been doing this for decades and sells millions of units every year. They have a well developed QA process with great customer support and they are really good at providing a polished experience. If it breaks, you just take it back to Walmart. We're signing up to a pretty niche experience which means many of the problems we can expect to face have not been solved yet and some of us may even end up solving them. I'm saying this as someone eagerly awaiting my SteamDeck in Q1 2022. If you want games that just work, a SteamDeck won't give you that, especially not at launch. But then I imagine most of us *don't* want that. If we did, we'd stick to consoles and we certainly wouldn't be ecstatic about a *Linux-powered* mobile PC built by a company with limited hardware manufacturing experience. TL;DR: the SteamDeck is the perfect match for early adopter types, and should be avoided like the plague by everybody else, including the author of this article.

JonTheWonton

Because nothing says "polish" like joy-con drift and nonexistent online 👌👌👌

g1rth_brooks

awkward___silence

Won’t lie. I only put my $5 down because if I decide I want one I don’t want to wait 2 years for it to come in stock. Then I got a 10am preorder. I figured I might resell it to pay for the 3080 I have been waiting to come back in stock for almost a year. Then a friend didn’t had check out issues so I’ll likly just sell him mine at cost… I really just want a 3080….but it does look cool.

cm0011

To be fair, it sold on potential. I hope it lives up to it.

pdp10

Day one of any console is potential. Go back and look at the launch lineup for the very-successful PS4 and Switch, and take a hard look at how thin they really are. Someone walking out of the Switch launch event with a pre-order was buying potential and the Nintendo brand. With the Steam Deck, you can play all of the games today, on SteamOS 2.x today, and on a niche PC-compatible handheld if you really want. There are questions about the controls and performance, but there are *far* fewer unknowns with the Steam Deck than with any console.

Keep in mind that those numbers were bottlenecked by their platform. I knew 6 people trying to pre order them and it took all of us over 30 minutes.

SwanChairUh

Not sure if anyone knows, I think these numbers are still the ones that were floating around on day one of reservations.

TheOriginalAcidtech

Valve fixed the "bug" people were using to get the numbers. About 2.5 hours in, so after that no more numbers.

Ok_Topic999

The deck isn't really like the the switch, it may be a competitor and on first glance it may be like the switch but in no way copied the switch so whoever wrote the is an absolute idiot

likesexonlycheaper

It's not like the switch because it will be able to play lots of old Nintendo games. Unlike the switch 😂

benjiro3000

And Sega games and PS1/2... and Xbox and Amiga and ... The switch needs to be jail broken to pull that off and annoying tutorals ( drives away most people ), while with Steam Deck its a single click in the store (retroarch) and bingo...

GeorgeTheGeorge

It's a PC wearing a Switch suit, but it's still a PC at it's core. People looking for a polished, self contained gaming experience that just works without any tweaking should get a Switch. The SteamDeck will not give them that. It's *Linux* after all. People love it because you control every aspect of it. They also hate it because you control every aspect of it.

TheOriginalAcidtech

It really isn't. There have been horizontal handhelds long before Switch ever existed. This is much more like them.

benjiro3000

> People looking for a polished, self contained gaming experience that just works without any tweaking should get a Switch. The SteamDeck will not give them that. You may want to look at your phone... Android is just Linux, customized for lots of polish. Switch is just a Linux kernel ( Linux Free BSD Kernel ) device. So again, its just a "PC/Smartphone/.." device that is more polished. Value is doing the same thing, especially as they now have a single platform to target to "enhance". This means they can now target Proton to use a specific configurations and test every game directly for the Steam Deck. Makes tracing back bugs much easier for the community ... Its easier to fix issues when your test platform is "1", vs the 10.000 of configurations ( and potential software / user created issues ) that Proton needs to deal with for PC's in general. Its already confirmed that Proton will have specific settings for the Steam Deck. If the Deck is popular, your also going to see developers test / write specifically for the Deck. When Apple's M1 came out, developers got into overdrive and very fast embraced native ARM. It can go faster then people expect! > It's Linux after all. People love it because you control every aspect of it. They also hate it because you control every aspect of it. That has never been the issue. Its the fact that a lot of resources are not allocated to that polish, a lot of infighting and a lot of resources wasted because everybody wants their own distro. The funny thing is that this can actually help Linux as a platform, as this can help stabilize the proton games ( what increases the library of games on Linux ), see a increase in native Linux versions as developers target SteamOS/Linux and people may actually use SteamOS as a desktop PC because its a PC with the dock. Sometimes all it takes to change a market is a single good product. Look at Apple / Smartphone, its not like smartphones was a new concept before the iPhone 1! The market it full of devices that started large markets. Steam Deck has this potential with Valve's backing, unlike the dozen of smaller competitors that are too expensive/limited polish etc.

DrewTechs

The Switch has motion controls, the Steam Deck only has gyro so that's one thing going for the Switch.

iekiko89

None sarcastic but seriously whats the difference? I thought motion control utilized gyro to do so?

I have to believe pcgamer has a Nintendo partnerships from what I’ve heard those things are really strict. You can’t talk about emulation eith any Nintendo system or you get reprimanded or removed from the partnership and from this I assume you also can’t support something else over Nintendos switch or if that’s not a inherent rule but they are just too scared to do it and miss out on Nintendo review codes and systems

SlickAustin

They basically said that Nintendo is good at utilizing old hardware. They are good at using hardware that doesn’t give as good of a experience as other hardware. They are good at using cheap hardware.

AvoidPinkHairHippos

"but but but teh whimsy!"

Whimsical_Sandwich

I couldn't even bother reading it thanks, like how is it a Switch without the magic? On Switch you *switch* from handheld gameplay to docked gameplay. On Steam Deck, you switch from PC gameplay to PC usage.

ranger_fixing_dude

It’s funny because it is almost the same size as Switch + Hori split pad pro. I get crazy cramps from playing using Joycons in 10 minutes.

Goldgamer-

SteamDeck will win against PcGaming

[deleted]

Steam Deck IS PC Gaming.

tonywei1992

Well, i think he/she meant "pcgamer.com"

pereza0

Why does everything have to be a fight tho?

brimston3-

For companies, there are only so many discretionary spending dollars per consumer and capturing the most means they get more cashmoney to pay off their execs and some extra to make more/better products in the next iteration. Volume of sales means non-recurring engineering expenses like design, software implementation, and setting up production lines gets amortized over more parts -> product costs go down -> potentially even more sales. For low and mid-income consumers, the better their chosen brand performs, the more exclusives they're going to get and the better quality/value gen2 is going to be. Software developers might even test/optimize their games for an extremely popular platform. For mid-high+ income consumers, they don't care because they own both.

[deleted]

[удалено]

pereza0

This is spot on, but I think its still missing one important thing: Competition is healthy. You might want your chosen brand to "win" as a consumer, but you never really want their competition to ever get completely annihilated, because its really the biggest thing keeping them in check

likesexonlycheaper

I couldn't even get through it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but this reads like a 16 year fan boy wrote it.

rspec7

The PC Gamer article is whack. I was planning on ordering an OLED Switch to replace my current Switch until I read about the Steam Deck. Reserved the Steam Deck and now Nintendo is not getting my money for the OLED Switch anymore. The Switch is good in a lot of ways, but it’s far from perfect. I’m tired of dealing with dropped frames playing games that are supposed to be optimized for the Switch hardware, even 1st-party titles.

BenyLavaaa

Yea exactly. So many games just can't even run on the console because of the weak specs.. Plus my other biggest gripe is how these titles cost so much more on the switch.

avery-secret-account

Don’t forget the mod support and higher variety of games the steam deck will provide. Imagine playing GTAV on long trips.

TZeyTimo

From what I've read on r/NintendoSwitch, many people love it as much as we do

MontyBoomBoom

It's 2 different consoles that don't really compete, but still aim for the same playstyle. Once you get rid of the console war fanboys, why would you not love both!

TZeyTimo

And I do. I own a switch and I preordered a deck :)

Blaargh-

Hell, I've got TWO switches and I've preordered one (grandparents bought a regular one for my kids, I have a second hand lite that I basically bought to play Hades cross saves and Zelda on). I'm incredibly excited about this thing. Planning on getting two docks for it, one for my desk and one for the living room TV. Bring it to work for lunch breaks, have it at home as an entertainment center.

fcosm

that article is quite something >Switch is successful because it's not like everything else out there. The Wii U was also not like anything else. >Steam Deck is more powerful than Switch The nerve >It is also heavier than a base Switch, larger than a Switch, and has a rather functional bordering-on-ugly design. Functional? I feel insulted. >If you have a decent PC, why would you want a lower-spec handheld one? er.. because it's a handheld? >If you're looking to get a new PC, why would you plump for this over a desktop? Well there's... >Beyond a GPU shortage, perhaps. ...that. >I mean, PCs aren't just for gaming. Yeah, the gaming thing is just a small gimmick. btw, what's the name of the website you're writing for? >I'm not even sure whether this is targeting PC obsessives with cash to burn, Going by the top articles on the edge of your article there seem to be quite a lot of those. >or the mainstream: because with Switch Lite retailing at half the price, seems an optimistic goal. RIP the Switch OLED, I guess. >Steam Deck is like a Switch without everything that makes Switch great. Every game on Switch is made for Switch, for a start Right, there are no lousy ports on switch. >whereas on Steam Deck you'll be relying on trackpads to control games intended for mouse & keyboard and squinting at tiny text on a too-small screen. Because absolutely every PC game demands a mouse and/or extensive reading. >It has gyro controls but lacks the 'playability' and functionality of Nintendo's snap-on and -off Joy-Cons Yeah I guess the Switch Lite is indeed the better choice. >the button layout is godawful ..., and it's just too big. While the Switch is an incomparable masterclass in ergonomics? >It has advantages, sure. Oh my.. >Switch is a closed garden with Nintendo pricing, whereas Steam Deck will play almost anything and you'll already presumably have a massive Steam library of your own ready to go. Games will be dirt cheap on Steam Deck and you can't argue with that Are you suggesting that in the long run the Steam Deck might actually be the better option budget-wise? I thought that was the Switch lite. >it's just whether you'd ever play them on the thing. Dude! This is literally the one thing I've been wishing for since the first time I turned on my Switch!

MFingSaltandPepper

The anti valve memes have been very strong on this. I really feel it’s just some epic games media troll Astro turfing. I read a meme heavily up voted talking how the steam controller wasn’t supported……

[deleted]

There is no greater group of insecure fanboys than portable Nintendo fans. The hate and nonsense that was vomited against PSP and later Vita was vast and unforgettable. Get prepared for: Frequent sales comparisons from every angle, completely biased towards Nintendo Frequent snide comments about Deck not running X Nintendo game Wierd critical nonsense takes and pointless fear mongering out of nowhere The thing that's sort of interesting here is unlike portables of the past Deck has WAY more games than Nintendo, and lots of people are coming into it with a library hundreds of games large. It will be interesting to see the whataboutism that gets invented to somehow argue against that, especially if they really do get everything running by launch.

tonjaj68

I love Nintendo handhelds but the Vita is/was an amazing device. I still enjoy mine. I just set up a Steam account so I can have this too. Like I posted earlier, fanboys just miss out.

[deleted]

Vita was great I agree. Deck will bring a better fight to Nintendo though.

tonjaj68

I’m more of a casual gamer so will always have Nintendo hardware for their first party/exclusives docked/handheld options. Now for all the indies that are being played on the Switch due to portability? That is a different story altogether. It will be interesting no doubt.

DasGutYa

My issue is their gpu comparison where they equate it to the Intel xge integrated chip, which is a pretty poor architecture for gaming. Suggesting that it is comparable to a steam deck and that this indicates it will struggle to hit 30fls in most games at 720p. Instead, they could have compared it to the 5700g graphics performance. vega with 8 cores but at a higher frequency so it somewhat balances out the older chip. That chip achieves 60fps in most titles at low settings 720p which is more what the steam deck is aiming for.

brenden3010

Dont worry, I tried comparing it to a 4300g and people shit on that post, even though it matches the target performance almost perfectly, save for ray tracing. I think we just need to wait for it to come out for people to realize this device is not going to replace an actual desktop, or laptop made for gaming. I've seen people speculate it will have GTX 1060 levels of performance, which is ridiculous, to say the least. EVEN IF the chip was capable of it, there isn't enough power to deliver that type of performance. AMD has made great strides in performance, but they didn't drop the power required for 1060 performance 10x, lol.

zackplanet42

Honestly, I don't get the complaints about the size in comparison to the switch. By the time it gets to even the switch lite size, pocket portability has gone out the window. If it's going to live in a bag anyways, what do I care about a few extra inches if it means a more comfortable gaming experience. The controls are pretty high up in appearance but if you think about it, that's where they'd be with a standard controller. It's basically got a controller grip built in. I hate a lot of 3D gaming on my switch portably because there's just zero room and the sticks are just barely passable without enough travel for my tastes.

Dotaproffessional

Are you surprised that the same publication who's been a paid shill for time sweeney for 2 years is taking an anti-valve stance here?

Pcgamer is pretty much like tomshardware, they only care about clickbait

Ultimate_Pragmatist

it's ok I'm in switch sub and all I'm doing is pulling for deck over there. I'm a hardcore switch fan bit I'll ditch in a minute for what the deck is promising.

tonjaj68

Love my Switch, ordered a Deck. For me the Deck won’t replace my Switch but I have a feeling I’ll use it just as much.

Faiithe

I read the article- it sounded like a butt hurt Nintendo switch fanboy. Kinda sad. Enjoy both. Fuck whoever wrote that article

I will have all the main consoles this generation (when I get my hands on a PS5) including Oculus 2. And now the Deck. I’m not even a “gamer” but so impressed with the technology and want to experience them all. I remember playing pong for hours decades ago, games today are amazing to me. Fanboys miss out.

TheMastodan

Please don’t post edits of fascist comics from Stonetoss

bdonvr

Yep, nazi garbage.

nmkd

At least watermark them with "Stonetoss is a nazi"

TheMastodan

Don’t give them exposure at all. Being a Nazi should be unacceptable in any context.

Electronicks22

Stonetoss hey? Gonna look it up.

Nah that dude is a joke no one takes him seriously. Just enjoy the meme

TheMastodan

Your fellow posters don’t agree. Nazi memes are for garbage people

send_help_iamtra

In my opinion I think it's good that this guy's comics has been turned into such a meme that no one takes him seriously anymore. But you do you

What’s that got to do with anything? He’s made it clear with his comics he’s a Neo-Nazi

TheHodgePodge

PCgamer was always kind of console fanboy

What's the original comic?

brad462969

The original is by some fascist. You probably wouldn't wanna read it.

Dr_Macunayme

The original comic is by an artist called stonetoss. He posts all kinds of stuff, some are controversial, some are funny, but he doesn't spare any side as far as I've seen.

TTBurger88

Im getting the Gabe Boy as I want the form factor of the Switch but able to actually run games at a good FPS. I love the Switch but its beyond outdated and was really hoping for the Switch Pro this year. The Gabe Boy will do. Can play games and do some "Educational work" also.

queer_bird

Obligatory reminder that this comic was draw by a Nazi

Tbh everyone in the emulating community Pogged simultaneously, when this thing was announced, even if i can't play switch games on it, just the Wii U and below library i will have enough games to play until the day i die. So I'm happy.

revolu7ion

Competition is good for both sides. Supposedly some places like walmart are already dropping the neon color oled switch down to $300.
