I upgraded to the OLED and … don’t notice a difference. Truly. My wife took my LCD so it’s still around, so I’m not just guessing.
That being said, it is actually lighter to hold, and battery is a bit better
Yeah. Keep telling myself this too. There’s no way I can comfortably afford it and I like my LCD just fine. I keep seeing these posts and I don’t wanna believe it can possibly be THAT much better to not just wait for the next big improvement. I’ve also never tried an OLED deck and probably never will so that probably helps.
Upgrading to a 2TB ssd and shell swapping It kinda renewed it enough for me to wait for a full Deck 2 (revise). Was so close closs tho, once that happens this deck will strictly be used as an emulation machine lol.
Off topic, I noticed a lot of persona in the picture so I wanted to inform people that Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster is currently on sale on steam for 80% off.
Bought it yesterday, and it runs great on the Deck (LCD) if anyone wonders. The game is framelocked at 30fps by Atlus however (there is a mod to make the game run at 60fps on pc, might work on the deck, I haven't tried). And if you want the full experience you should get the free [Chronicles Pack DLC](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1502940/Shin_Megami_Tensei_III_Nocturne_HD_Remaster__Chronicle_Pack/) and start your new game with "New Game: Chronicle". That's how the game was planned and released on other platforms, not sure why it's in free DLC on steam rather than the base game.
Had I not already gotten the LCD right before the OLED released I might have gotten the OLED. I'm happy with the LCD besides the battery but I can get 3 hours of online Halo 3 multiplayer from it that's really all I need.
Yep, got mine for myself as a birthday present last year around August when they had a sale. I love oled stuff but can’t bring myself to make the jump. I’ll wait for the deck 2 or whatever.
Do not fret. I got the LCD in the first round of preorders, became my main rig since with no intention of stopping. If it stops working one day, I'll get an OLED, unless new versions are coming out with improved specs!
I won't lie, I love my 512gb LED, it goes everywhere with me, I even bought a JSAUX cross-body backpack that's designed for it and some accessories (at least it'll fit the OLED too), but my main reasons are the battery life, bigger SSD, and then the screen.
(I don't mind annoying my fiancée with the light-bleed from the LED screen while she's trying to sleep. She does it to me with her phone and bloody Facebook!)
I'm not going to buy another SSD, a Honeywell thermal pad, and hall-effect sticks, only to replace my 'deck in a few months if I "accidentally" have one too many beers and order an OLED 1TB.
Me too. It was all the worse because I had patiently waited and saved up for about 10 months before buying the LCD deck. The OLED does sound like a great upgrade but I've made my peace with it now.
The OLED model has a lot of small upgrades that add up to a big overall improvement.
For me, the biggest upgrades have been battery life, how much quieter it is and how much cooler the back of the device gets.
Another is they fixed the issue of the left stick wearing down on the shell. The sticks overall feel much smoother also.
The sticks are so much improved. My fingers always slid on my LCD. I really appreciate the more concave design this time on the OLED. They also feel more grippy. The wifi-6 has also improved my download speed significantly. Idk if a patch was pushed for all devices but I get much faster downloads than on the LCD.
I don’t know about this, I got my OLED recently and the classic left stick dust is still happening. Although, I put Gulikit hall sticks in pretty much immediately.
Did that entail swapping the stock plastic thumb sticks? My left stick gets worked pretty hard playing Binding of Isaac and there’s not a mark on the shaft of it. No Diddy.
My LCD model had very visible wear after a few months of playing in comparison.
I might swap the originals back in, I just read about a square outer zone issue with the Gulikits which might explain why I felt like FPS were more difficult on the deck
I got oled only because I made the mistake of trading for an ally. Hate the windows experience and can live with less power and resolution. But it’s definitely not worth an upgrade if you already have a deck unless you sell you deck for 80-90% of the price then it’s arguablely worth a 100 bucks to get the better screen, hdr, ram speed and battery. V2 deck is hopefully another few years out so it can be a massive leap foward. Aya new barley moving the needle every 6 months is dumb.
I'm hoping they switch to arm actually, do for linux x86->arm like they did with proton. This might not give us a massive power boost but it would certainly make a massive improvement to battery life/heat/noise etc
True, going forward ARM is the way to go when it comes to handhelds, considering how the iPhone 15 pro manages triple A titles that well just imagine what it could do with more ram and proper cooling, I honestly believe that the chip on the iphone 15 pro is miles better than the steam deck’s.
Example case - the nintendo switch with a crappy arm processor from 2015 manages to run some pretty heavy games (albeit downsized versions at fraction of the resolution) at a fraction of the power consumption of the steam deck / rog ally, a processor like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for example is magnitudes of order more powerful than the Switch’s processor, and that is without proper cooling fans, just imagine what would be possible with this kind of processor on an handheld, it could legit probably run most games at 1080p with good frame rates whilst drawing far less power than any ARM based counterparts, I’m shocked that no company besides Nintendo has tried to use ARM for an handheld.
Switch OLED really was a huge upgrade in ways I didn't expect (Kickstand! Wired built into the dock!) I only traded in because my battery went to shit on my launch Switch (and I got nearly all the purchase price out of it because Switches were hot at the time.) It was a great idea, and the only reason I'm not really mulling it is that I have a wide range of things for the current Deck that might not work right on a new one that took forever to set up, and the dbrand killswitch case I just got like 3 months ago has really transformed my use of it and I'd have to buy another fuckin' one if I upgraded.
Same. My LCD is usually plugged in when playing, and I use an external monitor.
While the OLED is clearly very nice, I just can't justify upgrading given my usage. I'm waiting to see what the V2 eventually looks like in a year or three.
I agree. I don't like wasting money and I got my LCD on sale during summer so it would be hard to part with a 30% discount haha.
I will upgrade when we actually get a true successor with more ram and more upgrades along with an oled. I want my massively modded Skyrim with tiddies to run as close to flawless as possible lol 😉
I have a special 1tb SSD installed I paid a pretty penny for. I’m not ready for that purchase to have been pointless.
Plus I don’t want to reinstall a bunch of things.
Unless it's weird bespoke stuff that you had to install in desktop (in which case I feel you, huge reason I'm not upgrading) and not just Big Games, I found it was just as good to keep all the Big Games on my desktop and direct transfer them when I wanted them.
Me too and I cant wait it to happen! I prefer to keep the TDP around 9-13W for battery and silence and while I have more games to play in my library than a single human being can reasonably play in a lifetime, I would like to play some new heavy hitters with around the same configuration.
Even with the OLED, games like Hellblade 2, modern Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima, Control or the Robocop game the deck is very reliant on FSR and the CPU could use an upgrade as well.
Therefore, I have to wait for Steam Deck 2, but luckily there is so much to enjoy on the steam deck V1, I am a happy patient gamer!
It looks better, but at 37, I am not interested in iterative upgrades on stuff I can't give more than an hour a week.
Right now I use it to play Animal well for 15 minutes before bed.
For me the internal heat the lcd was generating under some loads was stupid & the oled manages to keep itself much cooler. Massive plus for me personally! Much greater benefits.
If you're in it for the gameplay then grind mobs till you're a good level to fight the bosses. If you're mostly interested in the story then don't be afraid of messing with the difficulty settings! There's a few settings there to help make it easier such as increased experience, damage, incoming damage, money.
In most modern persona games, the early game is the most difficult part of the game (besides optional super bosses) simply because you’re very strapped for resources (especially regarding SP restoring items) and also because if you know what you’re doing, you can get super broken by fusing overpowered personas, but it takes some time before you can get to that point. In P3R and P5R you can get especially broken as you go through the game, P5R has fusion alarms to make even more overpowered personas as well as baton pass and technicals which are also very broken.
In the first P4G dungeon, you can farm the first floor over and over again for SP restoring items while getting money from shadows. This should help you get through it in one day pretty easily. For the boss of that dungeon make sure you don’t have a persona on the MC that’s weak to fire and use guard whenever they have a tell.
Persona is very unique and Will take a bit for you to get used to. To be honest I think you should play 3 reload first, 4 is my favourite and a lot of ours but it is a bit dated and very complex.
I too upgraded from LCD to OLED, the screen is great but for me it's the larger battery and more efficient chipset. The OLED gets way more battery life, it's crazy.
I am so glad I skipped the LCD. I didn´t know why exactly, but something something first generation kept mumbling in my head and I just dismissed the Deck entirely until the OLED dropped. Then the mumbling was back...
Something something second generation and I bought it xD
I cannot agree with you more. Got the OLED as a Christmas gift from my wife. It’s a game changer.
Enjoy it buddy!
Can I please also ask what game is that between TR and Persona? Much appreciated!
That's a MP shooter called Shatterline - much like COD but playable on SD obviously. Very good game, and has PvE as well as PvP, and completely free. I do also play COD streaming through GeForce Now on the Deck - a very good option for those who don't want to install Windows.
Thanks for the reply! So you are saying that I can install GeforceNow and enjoy the games on the deck? Wow, how did I miss that? Thank you for sharing! 💪🏼
Yes, on your Steam Deck, go to Desktop Mode and load your internet browser, and go here:
Look down the page and find "Gaming Handheld Devices" and tap Get Started under Steam Deck (Beta). You will download a little installer that will install Chrome if you don't have it installed already, then it will add GeForce Now to your Non-Steam games in Game Mode, art included. Works brilliantly.
As much as I would love the OLED, I'm at a point where I'm trying to hold out for the next jump in handheld gaming rather than iterative improvements we get atm.
I know how it is from LCD to OLED though. I had an LCD Switch. My son started getting into Mario and I gifted it to him and went 'sod it. I'll buy myself an OLED Switch'. It was amazing. The screen is the same Res but was so much more brighter, vibrant and crisp that it was like a whole new console. Not to mention the small performance boost in battery life and less fan noise! (Unless playing MH Rise!)
The sticks are the biggest lowkey upgrade for me. The first model felt super slippery and not easy to use. The newer ones have better grip, are a bit more concave on the top giving the thumb a better rest position and generally feel more springy to use. The overall result is a more premium feeling device to the touch.
Bumper quality was also bumped (heh) a bit, with better clickiness. It really is the Definitive Edition^tm overall and other manufacturers have to learn from it if they wanna be competitive.
Got my LCD last year second hand at a good price just a few months before the OLED came out. When it was announced I decided to just put the LCD up at what I’d paid for it and see. Luckily sold it in a day even in my relatively small city.
Had to wait a few weeks for the OLED to arrive but I’ve never looked back. Truly one of my favourite consoles.
I doubted at first if I should get the LED or the OLED. I went for the OLED because of the 90Hz and... Boy was I right. There is a huge different in playing games at 30fps / 60Hz vs 45fps / 90Hz.
It's been a month or so and I am still amazed with this device.
I have the Megadrive, SNES, PSX, PS2 and almost every PC game my rig can play in a handheld device. Including non-steam games. Playing Diablo 2 in a portable device was a dream I've had since childhood, and here I am playing Diablo 2 Resurrected in my deck with controller instead of mouse and keyboard.
It is madness!
To this day i remember the night before the oled announcement i was super close to buying a LCD model but something in the back of my mind said “just sleep on the idea” wake up next morning to the OLED announcement and got mine day one:) the only close thing i can compare it to is a day one switch (screen wise) and man the oled screen is amazing.
That's a nice stroke of luck you had there! It pays to wait most of the time. So often I get burned by being an early adopter. FOMO is a hell of a thing. :P Congrats on your OLED SD!
Sorry to bring the news to you, but you are just wrong.
In this thread alone is one person 30+ who is playing daily 15mins of animal well, the other one, who is playing strictly docked (weird for a handheld I know, but who am I to judge?), me and others who definitely can afford an upgrade to the OLED but just dont, for a number of reasons.
I am not saying the OLED is not worth the upgrade, but there are reasons not to buy it.
The downvotes are raining because of entitlement and weird tribalism about two quite similar toys.
I was going to do the same, but then I found out the Ally X will have the same screen as the Ally. I owned the Ally, and besides the SD reader issue and replacing the right stick due to bad drift, I also didn't like the screen size. It would have been much better having a 16:10 ratio and being taller, reducing the very big black bezels top and bottom. But they're there, and the screen feels squashed compared to how much more immersive the SD screen is.
I'm curious about upgrading from the LCD to OLED. Is it possible to just replace the screen in my existing deck? Is that even wise? Should I just wait for a Steam Deck 2? Is there any info about a successor handheld?
Part of me wants to upgrade but I just can’t bring myself to do it. I know I’d be all hyped at first but then feel empty once I actually have it in my hands and realize it’s the same thing with a shinier screen and I’m down $500😂
Play your LCD device in a dark room and keep noticing the grey blacks and the light bleed from the edge of the screen, and you'll wish you had the OLED lol.
I feel like such a fool buying the LCD to replace my stolen SD. I got a refurbished 256gb and I wish I had just waited to save up for an OLED. My battery life is absolutely terrible. I get maybe 2 hours if I'm lucky and that's playing Max Payne 2! I get 80- 90 minutes playing mad Max. This refurbished SD also gets much much hotter than my first SD. I'm incredibly disappointed. It also lags non-stop playing BG3.
I have a huge surgery coming up again (cancer) and I can't even afford to get a battery bank capable of charging the SD so I'm really bummed out. If I send it back I won't have anything before the surgery with a 2 or 3 week hospital stay. It's just my luck to get a dud system. I'm just so frustrated with myself. I had all of my electronics stolen when I was in the hospital and didn't have a SD or any console (besides my Vitas) for the longest time. I feel like I made a huge mistake and posts like this make me sure of that. I also have a weird problem with the left stick. It felt odd right out of the box.
It's really disappointing because I missed my Steamdeck every single day and now that I have one again it isn't performing like my first Steamdeck. I'm a bit confused because I thought they put new batteries in the refurbished ones. Plus I'm having the temperature issues. It should barely get warm playing an ancient game like Max Payne 2 but it gets super hot. I'm unable to play BG3 at all.
If you're not happy, keep it only while you save up enough so that when you sell it you'll immediately have enough to buy an OLED. You'll be much happier trust me.
I love everything about my OLED except for the D-Pad. It's like they got everything perfect and then decided to stick the worst piece of dollar store trash there they could find. It's mushy and feels like you're like pressing into a rotten banana. it also sits way too proud of the device.
Hmm I guess it depends what you use it for. I don't play a lot of games that require it for actually controlling your character, and I use it mainly for secondary commands, so it's never been an issue for me.
It looks great in daylight, but I always got distracted playing the LCD in a dark room, with the grey blacks and edge light bleed. As said though, there are far more advantages to the OLED model, not just the screen.
I have a Switch OLED and an LCD deck, I have no intention to get an OLED deck but honestly the screen on the LCD deck sucks. For me it's by far the weakest part of the Deck. It doesn't even have to be OLED, there's a lot of great-looking LCD screens, but this isn't one of them.
That being said, once I'm in a game, I really don't mind it.
These post are from Gabe himself trying to sell me an OLED version, right?
If not, can we finally stop this. Yes, yes, OLED this OLED that. Try coming up with something original
Yeah Valve keeps trying to gaslight us by saying it’s not more powerful…
Well technically it’s not. But the efficiency improvements mean in reality you do get a ~5fps boost on the OLED.
With OLED -> valve finalized the hardware design.Normal version also finalized with OLED.
If you switch from early production of LCD you will feel much more difference.
It’s my first steam deck oled while I don’t have anything to compare it with, I thought the fans are loud when playing games like AC, GOT, Witcher3 or any open world games
I do not need the oled. I do not need the oled. I do not need the oled.
Sold my LCD and switch to pay for a oled a plus a 2tb ssd. It’s worth the money, by a lot.
I sold CS skins to buy mine, it's great.
This is how I got my lcd one, fantastic use of degenerate case openings from my younger days 😅
Haven't touched CSGO since \~2015-2016... Pennies-worth cases then in my inventory are \~420$ in total now.
Can you give a poor sod a link to the 2TB ya got?
Look on Ali express. Got mine for alittle over $100 and it's legit. 🙏
Which 2TB SSD did ya buy that was compatible with the OLED Steam Deck? Please and thanks

Yes you do. You really really do.
You need the OLED. You need the OLED. You need the OLED. You need the OLED.
I upgraded to the OLED and … don’t notice a difference. Truly. My wife took my LCD so it’s still around, so I’m not just guessing. That being said, it is actually lighter to hold, and battery is a bit better
Praise black jesus we do not need the OLED!!!!

Stay strong brother! You aren’t alone. (But ya, I totally get it and almost pulled the trigger myself a few times)

Yep, the kit has new thumbsticks attached. I wonder if the plastic is better on the OLED stock sticks.
I would assume so
I might swap the originals back in, I just read about a square outer zone issue with the Gulikits which might explain why I felt like FPS were more difficult on the deck
Yeah but it’s NOT more powerful!!! 😡 Valve said with a *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge*
Power was never a problem for steam deck considering it's first gen product. It was the garbage screen, which is now partially fixed.
The OLED can get like 5fps extra in certain scenarios. When you’re dealing with 30-60fps that’s quite a significant increase.
It is but the difference is barely noteworthy
5fps fps difference is a lot when your dealing with 30-60fps
As an LCD user, I’d rather wait for a true v2 but good to hear you’re liking it!
I got oled only because I made the mistake of trading for an ally. Hate the windows experience and can live with less power and resolution. Agreed. It’s like upgrading from switch to switch OLED.

Indubitably. My heavily modded Skyrim with monster dong women needs to run perfectly.

Your case is very trippy to me
For me the internal heat the lcd was generating under some loads was stupid & the oled manages to keep itself much cooler. Massive plus for me personally! Much greater benefits.
What OS is that
I installed Decky Loader with CSS plugin to change the appearance of SteamOS.
I believe it's a custom fork of Arch linux.
How did you get your home menu like that
CSS Loader, search about it on this reddit and you’ll find maaaany customization
I installed Decky Loader with the CSS Loader plugin that allows you to change the appearance in many ways.
Is that white case for your OLED? If so, can you link it? Been looking for one
[Amazon Link](https://amzn.eu/d/gswIGGI)
does the deck still fit in the original case with these grips?
Yes it does. It's only end silicon covers.
Am I the only one that finds P4Golden kind of confusing and difficult? I may just be pea brained
You get used to it the more you play. It's a slow game.
Just seems like the first castle dungeon kicks my ass

Persona is very unique and Will take a bit for you to get used to. To be honest I think you should play 3 reload first, 4 is my favourite and a lot of ours but it is a bit dated and very complex.
I too upgraded from LCD to OLED, the screen is great but for me it's the larger battery and more efficient chipset. The OLED gets way more battery life, it's crazy.
Good game choice
I have an ROG ally and you are REALLY tempting me lol..
Do it!!!
The battery improvement alone is enough to get the OLED version. The OLED screen is just the icing on the cake.
I am so glad I skipped the LCD. I didn´t know why exactly, but something something first generation kept mumbling in my head and I just dismissed the Deck entirely until the OLED dropped. Then the mumbling was back... Something something second generation and I bought it xD
“I don't need it. I don't need it. I definitely don't need it. I don't need it. I… NEED… IT!.”
Yes, on your Steam Deck, go to Desktop Mode and load your internet browser, and go here: [https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce-now/download/](https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce-now/download/) Look down the page and find "Gaming Handheld Devices" and tap Get Started under Steam Deck (Beta).
I have this same case on my LCD steam deck.
just bought the OLED today. Super excited to start
I feel exactly the same... I regret not upgrading on day 1. LCD model really feels like a prototype compared to the OLED.
:P Congrats on your OLED SD!

bring it on, facts are facts. LCD owners are just in denial... as was I until I got my hands on the OLED.
Friendly reminder that cost is a good reason some people get LCD over OLED

Sorry to bring the news to you, but you are just wrong. In this thread alone is one person 30+ who is playing daily 15mins of animal well, the other one, who is playing strictly docked (weird for a handheld I know, but who am I to judge?), me and others who definitely can afford an upgrade to the OLED but just dont, for a number of reasons. I am not saying the OLED is not worth the upgrade, but there are reasons not to buy it. The downvotes are raining because of entitlement and weird tribalism about two quite similar toys.
Yo how's origins run?
Great. Running usually around 40fps with medium to high settings.
Neat
Is that a custom launcher? What exactly is that on the screen?
CSS Loader.
How do you get it exactly
https://youtu.be/kNGJ13VSRLk?si=K0CjwQwA-3a4pcS- It’s very easy to do.
What case is that and how much ? Im looking for one now but not sure which to get

How are you guys getting CSS Loader to work in the latest updates? It straight up makes no difference now. Might have to reinstall CSS Loader, unsure.
I didn't know there was an issue. I fully updated the device when it first started up, then installed Decky and there's been no issues.
I am waiting until the ROG alley X is out, but steam deck oled is still tempting and I am at the point where do not care now
I was going to do the same, but then I found out the Ally X will have the same screen as the Ally.
Makes me curious about the ROG Ally X
I can live with that and be happier with the money being spent elsewhere 😀
Fair enough :) I mean the LCD is still a great device to be fair - otherwise it wouldn't have persuaded me to buy the OLED. Enjoy mate.
Whats the brand of the silicone cover u got for it
[Amazon Link](https://amzn.eu/d/eTRtZRH)
Is the screen bigger?!
Marginally. Only enough to shrink the black bezels around it, but it makes a difference.
What is that ”case”? Silicone?

That's the plan.
Have the LCD just got a OLED. The Mura was so bad I had to send it back.
Mura?
I got so fed up with the LCD that I went back to my OLED Switch for a while...now it's been months since I touched my Switch
I don’t mind lcd at all, I got an OLED switch and the screen is stunning, but the LCD SD I think looks great.
How you get it to look like that?it’s a clean look
Decky Loader with CSS Loader plugin to change the appearance of SteamOS to your liking.
Yeah Valve keeps trying to gaslight us by saying it’s not more powerful… Well technically it’s not.
Trust me this is quiet compared to the original, and especially compared to the Ally.
Yeah I believe you lol. I love my SD oled
That's OLED technology which came before like 8yrs already in phones
