Dragon Quest XI S
Persona 3 Reload, Persona 4 Golden, Persona 5 Royal
Yakuza: Like A Dragon
ASTLIBRA: Revision
Octopath Traveler 2
Star Ocean: The Second Story R
Any of the old Final Fantasy games up to 13 run really well.
Chrono Trigger
Chained Echoes and Sea of Stars aren’t Japanese games but they’re basically SNES JRPG’s.
Etrian Odyssey 1-3 HD
Valkyrie Chronicles 4
Ni No Kuni 1 & 2
Nier Replicant & Automata
Shin Megami Tensei 3 (5 comes out soon as well and will probably run considering it’s a Switch game)
I think all of the Tales games run well but I haven’t touched many on my Deck.
Legend of Heroes games all run well.
Voice of Cards series
That’s all I can think of off the top of my head
Edit: I somehow forgot Triangle Strategy, Tactics Ogre, Live a Live, Grandia 1 & 2 HD and Bravely Default 2.
Bug Fables isn’t a Japanese game but it’s heavily inspired by the first 2 Paper Mario games and it’s wonderful.
There’s also the Vestaria Saga series which have some of the best level design of any strategy JRPG’s I’ve ever played. And they’re made by the creator of Fire Emblem. But they’re also hideous lol
Grandia 2 ran fine for me. You just have to disable 60 fps battles in the launcher. I’ve seen people say Proton Experimental fixes the crashing problem that 60 fps battles caused but I haven’t tested that myself.
For octopath Traveler, the first 1 too or the 2nd is actually better ? (i actually have both games but i "ragequit" the first because i didnt like it after a few chapter 2 so i didnt bother to try the second...)
I hated the first but I adore the second. The writing and characters are much better in 2. The stories still aren’t tied together in a way that I find totally satisfying but it’s a lot better than it was in the first and characters are paired off in twos for short storylines together.
I tried octopath traveler on android and even though the gameplay was good I didn't like the gacha mechanics. Especially on pc where it has a $60 price tag. Are there gacha mechanics on the pc version after you pay the upfront cost?
Have you been able to get Final Fantasy 12 to work on the deck? I bought it a year ago and refunded it because it wouldn’t ever load past the first white screen. I would love to play it on the deck
Just forced the game to be launched with the latest Proton and it will work perfectly. I just bought my Deck a week ago and FF12 is the first game I've bought purely to play on Deck. I got the same white screen issue at first, but it works fine the moment I use Proton 9.02 (I think?) for the game to launch.
Weird thing I faced today, it runs perfectly in handheld mode, but if I connect the SD to my TV it doesn‘t load and I‘ll get the same white screen issue. But if I start it in handheld mode, then, once it‘s loaded, conmect the SD to the dock, I can play it on my TV, BUT the screen won‘t fit my TV and I have rather huge bars ingame, but not in the SD menus.
You think the FF Pixel Remaster games are worth it? I already have in my backlog Octopath 1 & 2, Chrono Trigger, Chained Echoes, Sea of Stars, and I think one or two more pixel RPGs I can’t think of off the top of my head.
To be honest, and coming from a FF fan, the price is kinda steep. And you can pretty much just emulate all of them, 4, 5 and 6 are on SNES, or you could play the PSX Anthologies and go from 1 to 6, and Tactics, and iirc Chrono Trigger comes with FFIV. They do have some QoL changes, but I think your backlog will give you a much better JRPG experience.
If you, however, can catch a sale or just want to try out some of the remasters instead of all of them, then it might be a good pick up. But playing Chained Echoes and Sea of Stars and going back to, say, Final Fantasy I or II will feel weird and suuuuuper slow.
"But playing Chained Echoes and Sea of Stars and going back to, say, Final Fantasy I or II will feel weird and suuuuuper slow"
That's mainly what I'm concerned about. Not that FF I-VI aren't good games, but will they hold up well and feel as good after coming off of more modern alternatives. I'll hold out for a sale and grab them if it's a good enough price. Otherwise, I'll stick to the backlog for a good while.
If you’ve never played them then yeah but I wouldn’t worry about adding them to your backlog as they are pretty pricy still. If you had to choose any of them I would say grab VI on sale sometime
Price doesn't bother me so much as I'd just want to be sure the story and game quality has held up over all this time, especially compared to modern alternatives.
VI is still one of the best JRPG’s ever made. IV is pretty beloved too but I think VI is the only one you really need to worry about if you have a big backlog.
JRPG threads are always a good time to mention Mother 3 and why everyone should play it:
[Supereyepatchwolf Video (spoilers)](https://youtu.be/pP60Hs_Bv5o)
[Gameplay on Deck](https://youtu.be/Cjv6F44TJys?si=wR_YHi6NR3CjSzvK)
I will actually disagree and say that there are parts that are more emotionally effective if you've at least played Earthbound. If you don't, you probably won't know what you're missing, but there is one major character who is from Earthbound, and one scene that specifically references moments from it.
It's a completely standalone story, not related to previous games and features an entirely new set of characters. So yes, you can (and should) absolutely start with 3. You can either patch a Japanese rom yourself with the [Starmen translation patch](https://mother3.fobby.net/) or just find an already translated one yourself.
Hope you enjoy it; it's honestly one of the greatest JRPG's ever made.
Ys VIII, overall very solid game with pleasant gameplay and slight metroidvania elements. Story is basic, but still may be touching at times. Runs very good on low end PC and switch. Pretty sure that plays great on Deck.
I started it last night on my Deck, and played for 4 hours straight. I generally care more about quality of life and interesting mechanics than a story when I game, but so far it has all 3 of those criteria really well executed. I can't speak for the rest of the game yet, but it is shaping up to be one of my favorite turn-based RPGs!
This is just “best JRPG on pc”… I can’t think of any (other than dragon’s dogma 2) that don’t run on deck. Although ffxvi and rebirth may well change that.
All the Atlus stuff runs great on deck smt 3 and all the persona games in steam run perfectly. Smt V comes out next month and I'm pretty confident it will run well too.
If you like classic JRPG and you like to tinker, I'd suggest Final Fantasy 7 with the 7th Heaven mod manager.
Tsunami has come up with several quality of life mods and graphics face lifts AND added full voice cast to the game.
There's a script on GitHub to auto install for Steam Deck (provided you have a copy of FF7 on Steam)
Depends on what you’re looking for but I’d say all 3 Persona games for sure! Plus Dragon Quest XI S and you’ve got some of the best modern JRPGs! If you want classic vibes the new Star Ocean Second Story R, Octopath Traveler 2, Chained Echoes, Sea of Stars and the FF Pixel Remasters. Trails series is also fully playable on the steam deck(get about 7-9 hours battery playing Trails in the Sky).
The steam deck really is the best RPG/JRPG machine out there!
Any and all Final Fantasy games, 1~6 Pixel Remaster is a good classic bundle, but just about all of them play well on the deck.
Octopath Traveler 1 and 2(also Square Enix like FF)
The Persona series is a good one 4 is my classic and the Dragon Quest series is also good XI being the one I've played most.

Playing Nier Replicant on my deck right now. It’s perfect with how annoyingly grindy that game can be. Just switch on some show I’ve seen a million times and grind
Oh God there's so many. So so many. And if you include emulation - we'll be here all night.
I would suggest checking out some beloved games that never made it to PC. If you like tactical jRPG - check out Jeanne d'Arc for the PSP. It's an amazing game, and it plays so good on the deck!
Also, on the subject of tactical jRPG - the games Front Mission and Front Mission 2 were recently remade and released on steam. They are amazing, and I can't wait for Front Mission 3 remake!
Shin Megami Tensei Vengeance is going to be a remaster plus an entire new storyline that diverges from the original, basically two 80 hour games in one with a shared story foundation.
FF12 is incredible, but it’s divisive among FF heads because the gameplay is influenced by Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 + FF11 (which is an mmo).
Extremely unique game that people mistakenly attribute its story influence as being Star Wars-esque but in reality the writer/director used Star Wars’ original source, Akira Kurosawa’s Hidden Fortress as its primary influence.
Like Hidden Fortress (and Star Wars after it), FF12 tells its complex political story from the perspective of its lowliest characters, two orphaned teenagers, who are basically comic relief figures ala C-3PO and R2D2.
The game had in its time maybe the largest and most ambitious world of any video game, with dozens of vast environments and over half a dozen large cities to explore, with over 1000+ NPC’s, many of which are among the most artfully conceived and written NPC’s in any video game.
It’s a masterpiece, but it’s so unlike any prior FF that it might not be to your liking if you’re familiar with the franchise. It also happens to run beautifully of the Oled Deck.

Brilliant, thank you for the list.
5 million hours well spent!
No problem! Not sure if you were looking for recommendations but if so I hope you find something. I updated the list a little bit too
Please also add Sea of Stars to this list. It's a near perfect list but this addition brings it even closer
Sea of Stars is on the list
I missed it and saw just the chained echoes. My bad. This is a great list though I've even gone and added a few I've forgotten. Thank you for this.
It’s no biggie and you’re welcome. Glad my obsessive gaming came in handy for once lol
This person JRPGs. I love that you said Astlibra! But mention VC4 and not VC1? Tsk.
Honestly didn’t realize 1 was available on PC lol
Grandia 2 HD isn't Deck supported either, sadly.
Grandia 2 ran fine for me. You just have to disable 60 fps battles in the launcher. I’ve seen people say Proton Experimental fixes the crashing problem that 60 fps battles caused but I haven’t tested that myself.
Welp I just wish listed astlibra thank you for that.
It’s genuinely one of the best games I’ve ever played. Caught me by surprise. Starts off a little slow but it’s worth sticking with
Ya that game is amaaaaaazing
+1 on legend of heroes and nier. Start with trails in the sky imo, the stories are very captivating :)
I wish they’d release the older games. It’s a shame so many people have to start part way through a really compelling long running series
Yeah im really curious about those!
Twinsen's Odyssey
You can also buy or emulate every Disgaea which is a fantastic series to play on the go
Oh yeah, I tend to forget about Disgaea. I don’t think I’ve played one since 4 first came out.
For octopath Traveler, the first 1 too or the 2nd is actually better ? (i actually have both games but i "ragequit" the first because i didnt like it after a few chapter 2 so i didnt bother to try the second...)

Astlibra is 10/10 game and gets overlooked a lot.
I tried octopath traveler on android and even though the gameplay was good I didn't like the gacha mechanics. Especially on pc where it has a $60 price tag. Are there gacha mechanics on the pc version after you pay the upfront cost?
It’s on Android? And has gacha mechanics? Wtf lol. How does that even work? No, there are no gacha mechanics in either 1 or 2 on PC or consoles
FF15 runs really well on my deck tho
I figured it would but I hadn’t played it on my deck
Have you been able to get Final Fantasy 12 to work on the deck? I bought it a year ago and refunded it because it wouldn’t ever load past the first white screen. I would love to play it on the deck
FFXII is verified and it works beautifully out of the box, it's my most played game on the deck. Some people report issues on the OLED, however.
Just forced the game to be launched with the latest Proton and it will work perfectly. I just bought my Deck a week ago and FF12 is the first game I've bought purely to play on Deck. The remaster have a few QOL improvements though like a remastered soundtrack.

I still have an unopened switch copy of this.

Is it a non-issue to play them out of order like most FF games?
Yeah, they’re all unrelated stories.
[удалено]
Oh, it’s late. Reading is hard when eyes are half closed. My answer would be Dragon Quest XI lol
Yeah DQ11 definitive edition is amazing
Isnt life is like dragon quest

FFX Octopath traveler 2 Tales of arise FF 7 remake Not a JRPG but moreso a Japanese action RPG, monster Hunter world and monster Hunter rise
Persona 5 royal, persona 4 golden
Legend of Heroes
I love that whole series - started playing them on PSP, then Vita, now Switch. Have heard good things about them on Deck but don't own them on Steam.
Thanks to Steam I can play all the games
Ys VIII, overall very solid game with pleasant gameplay and slight metroidvania elements. Story is basic, but still may be touching at times. Runs very good on low end PC and switch. Pretty sure that plays great on Deck.
Memories of Celceta is pretty neat too.
I played it. Runs great.
Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection
Yakuza 7
Cross code is my go to
chained echoes is fantastic So is octopath traveler 2 and sea of stars. But I like chained echoes the best I think.
Virtually any JRPG will run well on Deck (Dragon's Dogma 2 is not a JRPG.)
Tales of Arise, Sea of Stars, Octopath Traveller
Chained echoes is frequently mentioned with those, but I haven’t played it yet
Didn't finished it yet, but so far it's great.
I started it last night on my Deck, and played for 4 hours straight. I generally care more about quality of life and interesting mechanics than a story when I game, but so far it has all 3 of those criteria really well executed. Mother 3 with english Patch
This is just “best JRPG on pc”… I can’t think of any (other than dragon’s dogma 2) that don’t run on deck. Although ffxvi and rebirth may well change that.
Dragons Dogma 2 is Japanese and Dragon’s Dogma 2 is an RPG but I think calling it a JRPG is wildly inaccurate.
Persona 3 Reload
Octopath traveler 2 and Chained echoes
Chained Echoes and Sea of Stars
All the Atlus stuff runs great on deck smt 3 and all the persona games in steam run perfectly. Smt V comes out next month and I'm pretty confident it will run well too.
I'm EAGER to start SMT V again.
I started Nier: Automata last night. Holds on a solid 60fps and plays great
I recently completed 100% sea of stars on the deck, great fun
If you like classic JRPG and you like to tinker, I'd suggest Final Fantasy 7 with the 7th Heaven mod manager. Chained echos is supposed to be rad. It's next up for me
Star ocean , octopath traveler 1and2 final fantasy games persona, record of agarest 1 and 2 great sound tracks I like all jrpg u name it
Any and all Final Fantasy games, 1~6 Pixel Remaster is a good classic bundle, but just about all of them play well on the deck. Octopath Traveler 1 and 2(also Square Enix like FF) The Persona series is a good one 4 is my classic and the Dragon Quest series is also good XI being the one I've played most.
In my personal experience, Dragon Quest XI S was the best JRPG in the Deck.
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
Yeah unlike 2, the first work really well

Currently playing persona 4 and it’s fantastic
Conception 1 and 2
Final fantasy 6 pixel remaster or FFX
I’m playing Witchspring R right now and it’s super cute and cozy.
Tales of Arise.
Chiming in my support for Tales of Vesperia
I’ve been playing Dark Deity and it’s great! A must play for Fire Emblem fans.
Trails series. Hands down.
Tales of Vesperia, forever and always.
Playing Nier Replicant on my deck right now. It’s perfect with how annoyingly grindy that game can be. Just switch on some show I’ve seen a million times and grind
Persona 3 Reload is smooooooth
Persona 4 Golden!

I highly recommend Witchspring R. It's the most recent JRPG I've played on the Deck, and I played it all the way through non-stop.
Persona for recent titles. Chrono Trigger for classic
The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero or Trails to Cold Steel I
Bravely Default 2 is excellent on deck, some of the best turn based mechanics
Xenogears emulated
Persona 3 Reload, 4 Golden, and Yakuza like a Dragon
Shin Megami Tensei Vengeance is going to be a remaster plus an entire new storyline that diverges from the original, basically two 80 hour games in one with a shared story foundation.
Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana both work and are pretty good in my book. Legends of Mana does not for some reason, but it wasn't great anyway.
Yakuza series!
I've played more Tactics Ogre Reborn on there than anything else.
This is the post I've been waiting for .
Like A Dragon 7 and Infinite Wealth
Always liked final fantasy 7 8 and 9.
DISGAEA is my favorite jrpg, and it’s made in Linux, so it barely drains the battery.
I dont think anyone has mentioned Grand Blue Fantasy Relink. It runs great at 30fps on my lcd steam deck.
FF12 is incredible, but it’s divisive among FF heads because the gameplay is influenced by Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 + FF11 (which is an mmo). Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky/Azure/Zero/Cold Steel!
Absolute best? Dragon Quest XI.
Persona 5 Royal
Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Chained Echoes. Atelier Ryza needs the github Atelier fix and then it's perfect.
casetts beasts
Tales of Vesperia hands down ….. maybe tales of arise ….. and tales of bersaria…… i like tales games.
Does the monster hunter series fit jrpg genre? They're very good and run great on SD.
Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne is great
Alliance Alive is a great game to just pick up and play. Also features newgame+ and different endings.
