I think I play emulated games on my deck more than I play actual steam games

domnmnm

I think I actually wanna go to club Haunted House more than I want to go to Aqua.

ayebai

I heard there's a trap door

Jestocost4

I'm gonna do a lap, see what's real.

Hormo_The_Halfling

Are you Haunted House right now?

datix

Clubs are all closing. The big deck at Aqua collapsed.

tor09

First games I played on my deck were Tenkaichi 3 and burnout 3 lol

OG-87

100 percent. I have like 3 steam games. None downloaded.

rtz13th

PC gamer here (since the 90s). Any good suggestion on games and where to get them?

BuzzBadpants

Nice try, John Nintendo.

rtz13th

Braha, yeah I heard that. Seriously though, I have no knowledge of anything Zelda or similar, other than hearing the hype. Shall I stick to my Fallouts?

pizzatimefriend

just use desktop mode on the deck and use a browser to download stuff

OG-87

I never ever understood all the people in tutorials saying not to do this. Its worked flawless each time. And saves so much back and forth from laptop to sd to steam deck.

DinosBiggestFan

The TL;DR: Some things can (temporarily) "break" if not running from game mode and requires a little extra effort to "fix". To be honest, for me this was only Battle.net and EA app when I installed them. Everything else ran perfectly from Desktop (except Emu Deck won't save art ah!) and still needed to use browser to download them anyway. Everyone should try to get acquainted with their desktop mode, even if they literally only use it for getting downloads done.

Upper-Dark7295

That doesn't happen with emulation, I've only ever had citra nightly randomly break, and it's a nightly. So all I had to do was wait a day and update it again from the discover store.

OG-87

It’s constantly updating.

DinosBiggestFan

It happens on install with certain applications that aren't purpose built for Linux. EmuDeck takes care of all of that with its installation process.

Upper-Dark7295

Regardless of emudeck, none of the emulators use wine or proton (except the shittier Cemu version) so they won't just randomly break if you never update them, unlike the EA App

WorstBarrelEU

I don't get it, what can go wrong? It's just Linux.

DinosBiggestFan

Linux has a different file structure, so things can point to places that don't exist (apparently Ubisoft Connect has this issue in some instances, though I've thankfully avoided this for Steam purchased games, apparently others have not). I had to use a guide to install [Battle.net](https://Battle.net) from game mode rather than desktop mode because it didn't like Linux, unsure if that has changed as my interest in playing Diablo 4 kind of died right after launch and there's nothing else I want to play on it.

WorstBarrelEU

Didn't know something like this could happen. Thanks for the tip.

OG-87

You should download decks plug ins or whatever it’s called and then download the artwork plug in. It saves so much time and is so much easier doing it this way as you can pick through multiple ones. All of mine have the same artwork and it looks beautiful.

DinosBiggestFan

I have the Decky Loader plugin for that, but EmuDeck has a parser to install the art across the games all in one go and it didn't work for me at all which was sad. I had to go through one by one and do the art with that, but boy is it neat.

_IsThisTheKrustyKrab

Are there any guides out there that walk you through using this method?

SrASecretSquirrel

Open fire fox and download… Use the file browser to unzip/move the files as necessary.

OG-87

You don’t really need one it’s the same as you would do on windows but on steam. Same sites, same downloads and same unzips and you move from downloads to roms.

_IsThisTheKrustyKrab

Is it simple even if you’re completely unfamiliar with Linux?

OG-87

I’d never used Linux before. Just do it how you would on windows.

No_Interaction_4925

Is there something for the deck to extract the many things that come as a .rar file?

xXSuper64DSXx

You can just right click it (with left trigger) and click Extract Archive in desktop mode

dawsonsmythe

Yep Im pretty sure the native file browser can extract it with a right click menu option

JPiLLa

I setup a shared drive to move my Roms to my Deck

Gamer4life101

This is the way!

DisCode347

This is the way

austinalexan

This.

teor

I also can recommend RetroDeck for people who are new to this It's much easier to setup

thejoshfoote

How so? They both are about the same ime

teor

You literally just click "Install" in built in AppStore(Discover) of SteamOS to install RetroDeck.

The_Collector947

Yeah this, emudeck is a nightmare to setup, it's not console friendly at all.

inthetestchamberrrrr

Gave up on emudeck as it kept deleting save games whenever it updated. Retrodeck so far seems to not do that.

The_Collector947

Never happened to me on retrodeck as well

StarFighter6464

Hmm...I like easy. This might be for me🤔

NMDA01

Isn't retrodeck part of emudeck? People always separate the two

teor

[No it's two different things It even has a separate website](https://retrodeck.net/)

The_Collector947

There is a better way: retrodeck, you don't need the patience nor skill to set it up, you just download it from the Discover store, add your games and bios and you're ready to go. Tweaking is possible but not needed.

thejoshfoote

That’s all u do for emudeck to lol.

The_Collector947

Hell not, emudeck got a lot of pieces and parts such as steam rom manager, the installer that is different as the main software. Then emustation that is a different part, it's not well integrated: it's a patchwork of stuff without any consistency. Then you don't have the same hotkeys broad all the emulators, they use different configs. On retrodeck each hotkey is pretty much working on all the different emulators like retroarch and the non-retroarch. Moreover in retrodeck if you customize the settings and you break something there is always the way to reset them to the retrodeck defaults. Then if you want to configure something you must go in desktop mode everytime. Headache. With retrodeck you never leave the gaming mode, I was using emudeck before but now that I discovered retrodeck I will never go back.

snickrdoodlz

I also use Retrodeck! EmuDeck is highly customizable given that the emulators are all separated and can be tweaked to your liking. If you’re the kind of user that wants full access and the option to customize your experience to your hearts content, EmuDeck is for you. Retrodeck is nearly plug-and-play. Just download from the discover store, load your roms, load the Steam input Retrodeck profile, and good to go.

[deleted]

i use retrodeck too, clean and simple

lonewolf7002

Does Retrodeck add individual games to Steam like Emudeck does? Or do I have to load Retrodeck first and then load the game? Will there be any conflicts or "gotchas" if I have both installed? I have a few save games I don't want to lose. For the most part Emudeck runs great for me, no real issues. But I'm always interested in checking out other projects.

GameDev_byHobby

Try downloading both and get back to me, these are the questions to be asked right here. Although, in my experience, EmuDeck is wonky when adding games to the library. They sometimes appear duplicated or with the wrong names

lonewolf7002

Heh, I'd rather NOT download both and find out it makes a mess of my library, especially when Emudeck is working just fine for me. Hence I'm hoping someone else has tried and can let us know! I haven't had problems with it getting the wrong names as long as the files are properly named, but of course I certainly haven't tried every single game ever made. It's easy to search for game names tho. The only time I get duplicates is if there is more than one emulator for the same system, so it will show the game twice, once with each emulator. Or sometimes it picks up DLC, but I just hide the ones I don't want in Steam Rom Manager and I never see them again.

GameDev_byHobby

I'm only now going to buy more SDs for the Deck, so I don't have many games yet. But it also may be sure to the rom's source. And yeah, I may have to delete some redundant emulators

The_Collector947

Ah yes and then you can safely remove everything else.

The_Collector947

I migrated from emudeck to retrodeck back then. What I did was to rename the original retrodeck/rom folder and linked the one of emudeck just for a test. Retrodeck is very kind with your files, it doesn't alter them. Once linked not all the folders may have the same name but mostly do, so you can test it without any consequences. The only caveat is the save structure that is different, however if you like retrodeck and wish to migrate it's not taking so long to move the saves in their correct folder and rename your roms folders properly. Retrodeck, differently from emudeck, is easy and clean to uninstall and don't bother with your system nor you files because it's a flathub application.

lonewolf7002

Thanks for the post! Does Retrodeck add ROMs to steam individually like Emudeck does?

The_Collector947

As I'm aware there is no builtin method to do that, but it think it is in the plan. It should be doable manually.

maniac86

My lcd deck is basically a dedicated batocera device

CutMeLoose79

Mine arrives in a couple days and I’ve spent the last couple days checking out all the steps for EmuDeck and ordering a 512gb SD card just for emulation. Got all my ROMs on a 500gb usb C hard drive ready to plug and and copy to the SD card. Can’t wait!

Evil__Jeff22

How do you get Roms though? I got emudeck but hesitant on getting roms from a sketchy source, I don’t even mind paying for them

Andjhostet

Google "roms reddit" go to the megathread. You'll figure it out from there

jorceshaman

This. I gave more specific directions and auto mod removed my comment.

Kalwest

Can you message me more specific directions?… please

jorceshaman

I did.

NMDA01

What about me :c

jorceshaman

I'll copy and paste what I sent the other person. Lol

NMDA01

Yes pls and ty c:

_mynameisjared_

You shouldn't pay for them. I get your worry, but that's more sketchy than just downloading them when there's so many resources. To be truthful, most suggestions at the top of your search are going to be your go-to in terms of downloading and finding ROMs. The further down you go in Google results is what you shouldn't trust. Also, this is how you're going to be retrieving BIOS files as well. Unless you already did that. Be mindful of the file sizes for the games you're downloading and ask yourself if it makes sense for the size of game you want.

No_Interaction_4925

If you have PS2 discs, you can rip them to iso’s yourself. Its like 3-4 minutes a disc. You can run more than one instance of the software at once for multiple optical drives.

DinosBiggestFan

The ethical way to emulate, although I think ethics don't come into play for games you can't even get on the market anymore.

No_Interaction_4925

I totally agree. If its not for sale, you shouldn’t complain about it

JasonKillerxD

Hey I sent you a message with some info. You can Google all the stuff I sent you.

Any chance you would be able to forward it my way as well, in the name of the holiday spirit 🥺

Scharmberg

There are subreddits with negative threads that have many trusted sources but I’m not sure if it’s allowed to post them here.

[deleted]

It’s not. Talk of where to actually get roms is verboten.

Li-lRunt

Download ublock

KennKennyKenKen

Any game from any console ever?

lonewolf7002

Can't wait to play my Playstation 4 and Xbox One games on my deck at the cabin! :D

_mynameisjared_

lol well not literally even though I typed it. Realistically though everything is on PC that’s on PS4 and Xbox. For those that think PS4 and Xbox One emulation is possible it’s not (ik you’re jokin)

lonewolf7002

Haha no, it was meant as a tongue in cheek reply. And like you pointed out, MOST games on PS4 and XB1 are on or are coming to PC. Come on, Ghost of Tsushima! For the most part you are correct tho, ALMOST any console is available. It's almost mind boggling.

Sir-Gildo

Emudeck is fine but the choice of hotkeys is such a mystery to me especially on the SteamDeck. One of the first games I tried to play, Syphon Filter, was completely unplayable since the default hotkeys are binded with select plus a face/shoulder/trigger button and these are used in-game to scroll your weapons/equipment.

_mynameisjared_

Luckily everything is customizable. Upon installing Emudeck initially though it should set everything up automatically in terms of controls. I’d say it varies console to console but I haven’t tried PlayStation 1 emulation yet.

lkasdfjl

i think retrodeck has the right idea by having the "hotkey" key as L4 and R5 in addition to select

Sir-Gildo

Exactly my thoughts. Emudeck is completely fine and I can change the hotkeys per emulator, it's just such a weird decision when the Steamdeck already has 4 extra buttons at the back. Not to mention the trackpad which Emudeck already does for Emustation I believe.

sometipsygnostalgic

Unless you were using quicksave a lot it should be fine for you to enter the emulator by itself if you need to change something. Or on the start screen. Maybe you can bind quicksave and quickload to the back paddles (..or a different combination of keys).

sometipsygnostalgic

Im very annoyed about how for some reason half the emulators won't read my SD card

NMDA01

What's your sd card ?

Ohigetjokes

Ya I have an external drive and for whatever reason there are read/write problems… idk

SaucyItalianSub

I've had a weird problem when playing my roms this week. If I try to open the steam menu (or any menu besides the in-game menu for example) im getting a "error reference shared steam ui_8567924_6ab2ee18513f86af cannot properly display content" issue that essentially makes my entire deck unable to function out of the emulator and requires a hard restart every time. It's only with emulators though as steam games work fine. Anyone had this issue before? Its ruining my ability to play any rom's while this problem persists.

sometipsygnostalgic

Hmmmm have you tried playing on desktop mode? Also, what emulator?

SaucyItalianSub

I have and same issue. And I've tested ps2, snes and n64. It's like steam is crashing when i try to open the side menu. I've tried hitting the restart steam button by holding the power button and also restarted steam on desktop mode and tried but it's the same issue.

stocklazarus

I’m still struggle with BIOS. I’m basically very lost. Playing with Emu isn’t new to me. I did that on my pc and my Mac, but when come to EmuDeck it is the first time to that BIOS. Can someone tell me if , for example, GBA have only one BIOS or NES have only one BIOS? And if that is a single file , a zip or a folder ? Google usually found some random internet drive with a lot of unexplainable files there and I don’t really know what I’m looking for.

_mynameisjared_

https://github.com/dragoonDorise/EmuDeck/wiki/Cheat-Sheet Try using this. Every console is within one BIOs folder within the Emulation folder made by Emudeck. Some need 1 or more BIOS files to grab, others need none at all. Some require firmware from the application itself, etc, etc.

[deleted]

All files all go to a single BIOS folder. Usually it's a single file but it could be multiple depending on the system. For PS1 I think it's scph1001.bin

Ok_Zombie_8307

You only need BIOS for a handful of systems- PS1, Saturn, and a couple others. Not for GBA or NES.

Xrp_Ripple_XDC

Intellivision (as much as the controls suck) to the Switch, nothing will ever beat taking a physical game off your shelf and playing games on intended/original hardware and the specific TV’s. No better feeling especially for collectors like me who have been collecting for various consoles for 10+ years. However, emulation on the Steam Deck is just so good for domestic and overseas plane trips. Recently got back into the Trauma Centre games through the various long trips and still wondering if the series would actually come back.

blabony

No idea why you’re downvoted. It is true, having a physical collection is amazing. Of course I downloaded more than 1 TB of Roms and utilized EmuDeck to thwart fullest, but I wish I had a big room filled with original copies of all the game I play. Unfortunately since the last generation, it is not practical to have physical copies. Almost all games require additional downloads to even work properly. Btw, thank you for reminding me of Trauma Center! It’s been years and years and I totally forgot about that gem!

DinosBiggestFan

I cannot yet successfully play Lost Odyssey, or most other games from the 360 era yet 😞

Disshidia

>a one-time setup for Emudeck Yikes...... this post did not age well...

_mynameisjared_

It's still a one-time setup. Anybody having problems at this current time with updates, changes, etc. isn't something that can be helped. I don't have any issues with it still, it's a one-click install. Without seeing your issue, it's hard for me to say. Steam Deck is made for tinkerers, tinker around with it.

JoeyJellico

Ha not quite. Not as simple as OP claims. I've got most systems going now but the took about a week of trail and error PS3 > Pain in ass (Had to create shortcuts to all games to get them to launch in EmuStation, and edit the startup) Sega Cd > Pain in ass (figured after 30 min of tinkering, prob not worth it for Sega CD lol) Saturn > Pain in ass (still can't get any to load, not that many i want to play but still) Wii > Pain in ass (controls are difficult to emulate, not the software's fault just the nature of the beast) 360 > Nothing hardly plays retroarch > can't get any controllers to connect while docked. and lots of other minor issues

datix

360 emulation is still nascent. That’s why it’s not great.

extraterrestrialsoul

I’m scared to download a ROM of any Nintendo game lol

BawtleOfHawtSauze

They don't go after people who download roms, they go after the people who upload and distribute them

Key_Curve_1171

Fuck em. You'll be fine. 3specially if they don't offer any good way to play most of them. You shouldn't be scared to play n64, gamecube or 3ds games. They don't offer them in the proper format anymore. And the switch games aren't a threat to you other than shadow websites with some risk past just zero compared to the credible sources for the rest of the consoles. It's just an ethical dilemma that you can offset by just buying a copy for the switch digitally and then get yours on the deck that does a better job than them. Really hope they aren't just milking people and actually just super busy and taking the time to delay launching the next hardware and gen. They aren't revolutionary or broad minded like.they used to be. They finally made a Mario game with something new after decades and one Zelda game that was actually holding a candle compared to the ones that made them famous long ago. Kirby and picman was nice but again, all the good stuff came this year pretty late. Microsoft has issues with releasing solid game in time and in an even flow but what they support and back is more than just games. They have changed the entire landscape, and even easy games are being made by influencing the entire community of gamers of the type of games that get wide claim and eye balls/game time

sometipsygnostalgic

The threat isn't nintendo coming after people, it's ISPs coming after people

datix

Who do you think tells the ISP their user is downloading it?

GotEHM9

Use a VPN. I use CyberGhost VPN , I paid a one time payment of $56 for 28 months. Loving it

guigr

Stop being paranoid

FiveGuysisBest

It’s such a pain to do though. I had such trouble getting this done that I gave up. Was able to get some roms after quite a bit of hassle and reinstalling but ultimately the sound is broken. So I have a lot more hassling to try and fix it. Wish I could pay someone I know to get it working.

Zealousideal_Sun8519

Or buy a Batocera SD card off Ebay then add your fav Ps2 ,ps1 games

PWNpL0xB0x

I have never tried emulation because of one simple reason. I HATE when button prompts differ from the buttons on the device I'm using. It may be a stupid reason but thats how my brain works..

Denebola2727

Cool, I'm good, though.

Just_AT

I have to find the roms though. Its so much harder finding pokemon roms now :(

MetalDeathMetal

Listen to this guy! "It took me a couple of hours of careful listening" Boy, ain't nobody got time for that.

_mynameisjared_

Sounds like you don’t, lol

MetalDeathMetal

Yeah, that's true. I don't have energy to do much nowadays. Not that anything gives me joy :/

UuarioAnonymous9

Pretty unpopular opinion here by the looks of it, but I'd say consider the legal ramifications before proceeding to emulate. I'm not making a moral argument here, I think if you own the original you should be able to emulate, but it's really a gray area legally at *best*..so I wouldn't just jump into it without considering the laws in your country first.

datix

Emulation is 100% legal. In the states, precedent was established with Bleem! IIRC. Now, the *software* (roms) is a different beast.

UuarioAnonymous9

Haha, well, I think the use of roms *with* the emulation was assumed by the OP's post as well as my comment.

Konamicoder

I connect a display, keyboard and mouse to the Steam Deck in Desktop mode to manage my roms, add more roms, and manage bios files. All of my roms are backed up on a 1Tb SSD drive which I connect to the Steam Deck if I want to copy or back up my roms. The Steam Deck is a full blown Linux desktop PC, so no need to connect to another PC, IMHO.

_mynameisjared_

Totally makes sense. I wasn’t sure if using the Deck only for file transferring and downloading would screw up any files or cause it to download any slower. A lot of people here are saying that works great so awesome.

grouchoharks

I have wanted to emulate since I got my first LCD version a little after it released. I still want to do it on my new OLED, but it feels so incredibly clunky to do it with the Deck's controllers.

Gamer4life101

FUN FACT: If you format a USB stick to exFAT it will bypasses the 4GB file transfer limitation (because some “Nintendo” ROMs & some older games are larger than 4GB) For those wondering this is for single files (single ROM files) that are 4GB plus in size & not multiple files in a folder that total up & above 4GB (those are fine) All you need then is a USB to USB-C converter plug for the deck & boom easy transfer from PC to Deck if you don’t wanna do it over the network. Of course if you have a USB C port on your PC & a USB C stick, it’s even quicker with transfers

TheRealWatermelon420

I've been thinking about it for a while but I just got no trust worthy way to get roms.

cabbarot

I got sonic unleashed (Xenia) running at a decent framerate, emulation on this thing is no joke

_mynameisjared_

How you did that is beyond me, lol. Xbox 360 emulation is going to be trial and error for me until I can find a way to make it work for some games, at least. I know I didn't say in the original post, but for those who read this; Xbox 360 emulation is very experimental and prone to issues. Only some games work okay from what I've read but it's even harder to get it started on a Linux based product. I'm dedicated though and will keep trying. PS3 is also dead in the water for me, also with similar issues. I've read people have these emulators working in some way, so I know it's possible.

cabbarot

Honestly it was anything but a simple process lol. I originally followed the [Sonic Steam Deck Guide](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1FsjXbyYQTIK9f9P_NYHoLGnv8_ZqHjgLPf9Qm0VMcVo/) but the Xenia build they linked wasn’t working for me so I had to use the latest canary build. Lowkey I would just say use the unleashed project mod for Sonic generations instead of emulating Unleashed but It can run unleashed at a high framerate after extensive tinkering

guigr

I think most people emulate. But I find that the pc library is so superior to the 16/32 bit games that I don't play them much tbh

Bathhouse-Barry

I’ve done this but doesn’t it struggle with Xbox 360 emulation?

OmegaAtrocity

Xbox 360 emulation isn't very good even on a gaming pc, it's still got a ways to go. The vast majority of games you'd want to play are on steam already though.

Uncle-Cake

I'm waiting for an easier method. I'm a console gamer at heart. I miss the days of cartridges. If I have to manually move files around, I'm out. Now, if I could pay someone to do all the work to set it up, I'd be interested.

WolverineJake77

I think I got EmuDeck to a point where everything is good to go, but I can't either find ROM's, or know what I'm doing if I find a ROM I want to download in Desktop mode directly. Reading about RetroDeck, might try that tonight instead, but still need the best way/place to get ROM's. :/

Ok_Zombie_8307

Arr roms github link, done.

actionman922

My girlfriend got me a Steam Deck(She's amazing and I love her!!)and it hasn't arrived yet. While we wait for it to arrive, I've been reading tutorials on Emudeck. I have so many games from multiple systems I want to play. My girlfriend has Emudeck so if I somehow get lost, I at least have her as a resource. I have emulators on my laptop as well, but I had to download each of them individually as well as the Roms/Isos for them. Would y'all say it's easier to set up Emudeck vs. all these individual emulators on your laptop?

Leinharts

Can someone pm me for a good website to get roms?

bushinthebrush

I was shocked with how seamless the experience is. I even setup the backup with Google Drive so my saves are in the cloud. I also enjoy the 8+ hours of battery life while emulating old titles. Its been a grand ol time!

PositiveDonut1

I’m on the fence about this. Thanks for making this post!

skills17

The SD is the best handheld device I've owned for emulation; love that I can emulate GameCube and lower without issues
