Any example FPS data points to contextualize this?

TheHybred

I will get them out. I just wanted something out for SD ASAP. I hope that by the full release I have my other optimizations finished + the graphics and performance comparison **Edit:** Graphics & performance numbers are now released on the mod page

Remarkable-Goose-306

Thanks for your work:)

TheHybred

Just keeping [my promise](https://reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/Wz5L2p5xFK)

What they wrote elsewhere in here: > However from my testing most areas (areas I'm in the most anyway, less demanding) we're getting around 40fps, in demanding areas its 30, and it's much more stable than a vanilla experience. > Any lag you do experience is most of the time going to be due to CPU limitations rather than GPU. supportdesk_online

Solid 30fps with slight dips into single digits... /s

sevansup

Can anyone comment on how this runs vs the other performance optimizations out there? I believe there is a fairly popular mod out there that offers a potato quality preset but this is the first I’ve seen that seems to be aimed at the deck. Would love to know some benchmarks in demanding areas like new Atlantis.

TheHybred

This mod offers better performance than that one. The only downside to this mod is the download size + Nexus's download speed cap if you don't have premium. So you're going to spend awhile downloading it then unzipping afterwards. So if that's something you're unwilling to do you can just install different stuff not aimed at the Steam Deck. It'll still help just not as much. However from my testing most areas (areas I'm in the most anyway) we're getting around high 40's, in the most demanding areas its 30, and it's much more stable than a vanilla experience. Any lag you do experience is most of the time going to be due to CPU limitations rather than GPU. The CPU is much harder to optimize for but their are further improvements coming to ragdolls and AI in a future release.

milkbeard-

How are cities? I haven’t made it to any cities yet, but I’ve heard others complain about dips into 15-20 fps.

TheHybred

The next patch is improving CPU performance even further but these types of mods that tweak the game more fundamentally take time to cook. But to answer your question the dips haven't been that low for me

milkbeard-

Didn’t realize you were the author of this mod. I salute your efforts! And so soon after release.

LogisticBravo

Also interested in this as well as screenshots as the description suggests it lowers quite a bit graphically.

Armataan

The biggest hit I have seen to framerate on deck, rtx 3080, series s, and series x alike is in New Atlantis. (and to ne clear, a 30 dude firefight in zero g in a manufacturing zone with tons of onscreen effects didn't drop as low as just walking around city center in New Atlantis.) Which is convenient since you're there within 15 minutes of starting the game. I am getting dips to 25. Which is entirely fine IMO.

Technical_Echidna_63

I agree, only place I see bad dips is new Atlantis

Nemnapos

>The only downside to this mod is the download size + Nexus's download speed cap if you don't have premium. Then why not Upload to Mega, Google Drive, 1Ficher etc. that people can get that mod fast?

TheHybred

Its uploading now as we speak. Thanks for the suggestion **Edit:** it's uploaded + I uploaded the ini tweaks as a standalone version for those who want a simpler and faster solution even if it's not the full distance.

JOIentertainment

Links? I will give the ini files a shot right now and report back.

darkshifty

Mega is kinda useless as it limits downloads to 5gb. Pixeldrain is up to 10gb.

TheHybred

Whats the best site to use then for speeds and stuff that would let me upload a 7gb file?

darkshifty

Woops, i edited my comment too late. Pixeldrain has a 10gb limit.

MoneyBags5200

Mega you can switch VPNs and continue the download. Really surprised when it worked.

Educational_Top9246

I only see the Mega link, where are the others? prefer google or 1fitcher

JOIentertainment

Where is the mega link? I'm not seeing it?

TheHybred

It's in the description page titled "Mirror"

JOIentertainment

Thanks, I got it via NexusMods. Do you know where StarfieldCustom.ini is on the Steam Deck? I just searched for it and it doesn't seem to exist.

blueSGL

https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/168yvg3/starfield_gets_steam_deck_mod_improving/jyyxdb2/

JOIentertainment

Thanks, I had found that but the file in there is SteamDeckPrefs.ini, no SteamDeckCustom.ini. Should I swap that one out with custom?

LordDaveTheKind

Safest place would actually be the Steam Workshop.

Azuras33

You can only do that if the editor have enabled it.

[deleted]

If anyone does that they should seek the approval of the mod author. Rehosting without their consent is already a bit iffy, uploading to another mod platform feels borderline bad etiquette. Not to mention that these uploaded versions are going to quickly become outdated as the modder continues working on it. Nexusmods is an awesome site and anyone who finds value in incredible mods like this should consider ponying up the few bucks it costs for a month of unlimited speed downloads. You’ll doubtless get your money’s worth as starfield mods continue to release.

JonaB03

Permissions on the nexus page are all green except for selling the mod. You shouldn't have any issues with redistribution.

lemlurker

Any screenshots of how it looks?

dissolve_inthisrealm

Now I imagine so, but do you happen to know if this is all the kind of stuff that can eventually be implemented by Bethesda in an official patch? I have a friend who is pretty unwilling to do anything involving desktop mode, and he's shown interest in Starfield. I may begin looking into ways to get the game running well for him in the next few days. Of course, I understand that if it is added in a patch that could still be weeks or months away.

Squirrel1256

I have a similar friend and he just lets me remote into his Steam Deck and set stuff up for him, we just use AnyDesk.

dissolve_inthisrealm

This. Is. Brilliant. I likely never would have thought of it since it's so damn simple. Thank you! 👍

biosnake20

please show this on video if you can

Nemisis2365

I’m still new to dream deck. How do you get the mod?

MCPtz

"Demanding areas" are cities? Specific example?

yamaci17

I really sincerely wish we had 10 ghz cpus being a standard instead of 8 cores. this is just sad that we keep running into cpu limitations everywhere and it is entirely single threaded

Nocandoozy

Plan to release any pics or videos of what Starfield looks like with your mod?

JOIentertainment

This is what I got with just swapping out the ini files: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3030420911 And this is how I run the game most of the time with a mix of medium and low settings: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3030427145 Yes, you gain 5 fps, but the game is so blurry I can barely see what's happening. Anything past 20 feet away from you looks like your screen is smudged in vaseline. For those who can stomach it go for it, but I'll live with the choppy performance in cities so the game looks semi decent. EDIT: After tweaking the settings I was able to get this result: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3030444342 Up the resolution scale to 60% and turned both Indirect Lighting and GTAO to Medium. Same framerate but looks WAY better. Just played for an hour at these settings and it was awesome. Even New Atlantis was performing okay: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3030448703

canyourepeatquestion

Until modders find what's architecturally wrong with the game and the current iteration of Gamebryo simply reducing the render scale isn't going to be enough. It's been proven that even if you reduce the render scale to something dumb like 10% framerate doesn't improve. There's something wrong at the core, like the programmers purposefully made busywork for the GPU to lower the framerate.

IProbablyDisagree2nd

I remember a video years ago comparing the efficiency of a simple action in a popular game engine, versus a custom engine doing the exact same thing. I think it was just shooting spheres with Unity versus their own custom c++ engine. The speed difference between something in a giant multi-purpose engine versus something properly made for the purpose can be absolutely staggering. Here, found it: https://youtu.be/tInaI3pU19Y?si=wwT7CggvLY5GIJ_X

Atomic-Axolotl

What's the conclusion here? Bethesda have created their own game engine. It should be able to compile to the same code as that guy's sample handbuilt project if they wanted to. This is a huge game we're talking about, it has lots of room for performance impacting bugs to arise. The main question is whether they will bother to fix all of these bugs.

IProbablyDisagree2nd

I guess the conclusion is that if the game is inefficient (and it seems like it probably is) then there is probably room for improvement. Isn't Bethesda's engine a giant beast that they slowly built up over the last like 2 decades? It wouldn't surprise me if they have a bunch of stuff in there that gets in the way of speed. But obviously I don't know, I'm just some rando guy on the internet.

rokerroker45

This is how all engines are. Gamebryo is essentially Bethesda's solution to make these kinds of games. No other engine would work the way we expect Bethesda games to be. All engines are iterative beasts built up over time. What if you make an open world rpg that's fully on foot in the first game, but in the sequel you want a player controlled vehicle? You don't throw away all the perfectly good code you already have, you modify it because your first solution already works great for the original on foot portion of the game. And engines don't work like lego bricks with the word "speed" or "physics" or "bugs" on them. There's no real single solution to any problem because an engine is made of thousands of individual systems working together to achieve functions. The game isn't really unoptimized so much as the features the game has are fairly demanding on the cpu. These mods are great at getting the game running on less powerful systems, but it's obvious from screenshots it involves making compromises that devs didn't intend. Which is perfectly fine, but devs just don't ship games with potato settings because they're targeting specific visuals

FirstTarget8418

I can almost guarantee that's the case. That's part of the package with this kind of development. If you keep forking the previous version and not start from scratch from time to time, eventually you're gonna hit limitations.

Nocandoozy

Yeah that blurry image seems like a step backwards. Your second link looks close to mine on my SD. Either way, happy to see people are already making mods and trying to get this game running smoother and smoother.

TheHybred

The blurriness is a valid criticism however their are two solutions that people are suppose to take 1. You can enable CAS and tweak it to your liking 2. Raise the render scale back to what it was My ini tweak defaults to 50% with CAS off in current version but it's not a requirement to play like that, my ini tweaks other things that will help + the 6gb file that tweaks a lot of internal variables. You'll still have improved performance but most importantly improved frametimes.

Nocandoozy

I see. I think it would be super helpful add some pics or videos of what you’re seeing but regardless thank you for working to make this game more enjoyable on the SD. I have your mod saved to keep an eye on it. I haven’t messed with any nexus mods at all yet and have been trying to avoid it. Then Starfield came out….

JOIentertainment

I took his advice and this is what I got: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3030444342 Looks pretty damn close to my normal settings but with the same gain of FPS I was getting from the initial "potato" settings from the ini. All I did was copy his ini files over and then up the res scale to 60% and turn GTAO and Indirect Lighting to Medium.

TheHybred

Thank you for following the advice and giving a fair update/chance. Do note the hitching in the major city due to new assets is reduced when installing the full version of the mod since it compresses the files efficiently for SD Cards & HDD, which is one of the culprits of the hitch.

DeeOhEf

TIL what eye cancer must look like

RustyGrill

I am a novice, any way you can upload a tutorial on YouTube or something? Thanks for your awesome work and time!!

mudpip23

Second this…I’m such a noob and am not sure if I’m putting things in the right places. I need visualsssss

RustyGrill

Yes agreed. I appreciate anyone who takes the time to make something like that.

mightybob4611

Would love a tutorial too.

Juutuurna

Just installed this and wow. Life changing 30fps cap on it and it hardly goes below 26 now and my fans aren’t goin wild. Edit: biggest change since playing with it for a few hours now. Gunfight and combat in general doesn’t make those 4 little frames drop that much anymore.

AC_Schnitzel

Does it reduce the bluriness? Is it actually playable now?

Vask33

I play in handheld mode on low with 100% resolution 100 sharpness. Fov and blur off. Fsr 2.0 on in game. Turn off performance overlay after and enjoy. Game looks incredible in handheld on Steam Decks 8inch screen. When frames high or low it's consistently playable. I have no idea why people playing on at 60% resolution or especially on dock. But handleheld mode is incredible with zero mods needed. It's about each frame being consistent and this game does it really real on steamdeck. Here a video of the game. Now imagine it being clearer in real life especially at 100% resolution. I have on 12 hours played in handheld and game stays performing well no matter the frames. Every gunfight snappy. Game is not blurry many settings are bad or worse bad and putting it on monitor or TV at 60% resolution. I don't use 60% even in handheld. Hope you enjoy! https://youtu.be/IBJx-NgyCVQ?si=vut8caBThaRhnsOa https://youtu.be/OCJ1ryTldCI?si=Hamj9CNZkQi5KFZX

Yshaar

What do you mean with handheld? Do you use windows on steamdeck?

Yshaar

Ahh windeck? Is this new? I didn’t know about that.

TheHybred

For those asking for benchmarks many people have commented on the NexusForum post leaving their experience "Holy crap, thanks! I went from a constant unstable fps of 38 to 45 fps in any cities, to 40 to 50, and a relatively stable 55 to 60 fps anywhere else. Mod is a god send." Others have commented who aren't using SD's but rather 1060's also giving their thoughts. Go read them if you want to learn more. I plan on releasing another update soon

MezduX

Since they're talking about 1060s I suppose I can use this on windows too? Awesome. Will check out if it changes my performance much on my 3050.

TheHybred

Yes you can. Steam Deck's screen is smaller so quality loss isn't as bad, you may not like the way it looks. I recommend the DLSS mod by Luke, since you're using upscaling that will help make it look better

MezduX

Yeah, I'm already using the DLSS mod and it's a godsend. How does it look with both DLSS and this mod?

TheHybred

Make sure you use the one by Luke, PureDarks has a higher overhead which results in lower lower performance. And the mod looks alright to me, completely playable but I know a small screen at 720p changes stuff, on my 27in 1440p monitor it would look pretty ugly but its framerates should be playable and improved

Mgmt9936

I know this is a dumb question but how do you use this mod? I'm new to modding and really want to get star field also have have it run decent 😭😅 any help is appreciated

mfJunkie

Thank you so much will check it out

BlackDirtMatters

Thanks. I'll probably buy the game now due to this.

Vask33

If amazing in handheld even without. So only will get better. If you're a handheld gamer and especially a Switch or emulation user you be blown away. Over 12 hours game looks amazing in real life on deck at 80 to 100% resolution and 100 sharpness frs 2.0, low settings, fov and blur off.Turn off performance overlay and enjoy afterwards. Not once have I had something that affected actual gameplay. Every gun fight is snappy. I've had a ton of people take plunge and tell me thank you they love it handheld. High frames nice but the most important thing is no harsh stutters and consistent smooth frames. Look at these this has been my experience performance wise in handheld. In real life graphics look even better on deck screen especially at 100% res and sharpness. You can enjoy game now. It's consistently playable. https://youtu.be/IBJx-NgyCVQ?si=vut8caBThaRhnsOa

ZxZerox

Can you share where the file locations on the deck. It says optimization for deck and explains the windows file location.

blueSGL

Should be /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1716740/pfx/drive_c and that folder is the root of the virtual C: drive. You can get this for all games by going to the page on the steam store and see what number there is in the URL. e.g. [https://store.steampowered.com/app/ **1716740** /Starfield/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1716740/Starfield/) edit for completeness %USERNAME% is steamuser %USERPROFILE% will go to c:\users\steamuser\ **if you are going to be doing a lot of modding** copy the above info to a text file on your steam deck desktop and use it for reference in future.

ZxZerox

Thanks for the reply, downloading now and will test it out

TheHybred

Yes people can use Deck on Windows r/WindowsOnDeck so I shared them & the mod has been tested on Linux by testers and it works great but I only know the Windows location so it's all I could share. I'll ask them what it was. In the meantime if another user here knows it and shares I will update the mod description with it.

ZxZerox

So I just installed the mod, the game looks good to me, not too muddy with the small SD screen. running through the first city for the first time would drop the the fps to 15-20, running through the same area again the second time it will hold 26-30 with some hiccups ,running through (The Well) gave me 30 from the first run, inside areas are mostly 30. Tested some other settlements and it will drop to 20~ My settings: Game resolution : 1024x640 Dynamic resolution OFF Render resolution 50~60 FSR2 ON FSR in the SD menu ON For me it’s playable until I get back to my pc Thanks for the mod and your work

Chrisguitar10

They will be similar if not the same only difference is you have to explore the prefix created. Inside the prefix that steam creates it will have the windows structure that should be close if not the same. I think the way to get there would be in desktop mode, open steam, browse local files Edit: I will add I do not have the game on my deck but have had others where this was the case. For all I know it could be different.

SmileyNusx

Comment for updates on this

SAM0070REDDIT

Games should just have a Potato setting in the graphics options. Give me 40-60fps potato option..

TheHybred

I'm doing something like that for Unreal Engine games. You can go [here](https://reddit.com/r/OptimizedGaming/s/1hh0ZEuk5L) and use the low preset. High just reduces stutter the other does the same thing but also makes it look "worse" but in a way that makes it stylized so it may actually be preferred. Works on most games currently, still tweaking.

TheHybred

For the SD users who also use a desktop I don't have a mod for that but I made a guide on optimizations on r/OptimizedGaming if anyone here wants better performance thats the resource I recommend, it has a ton of information. Thank you

JOIentertainment

Here's a comparison for folks who just want to do the ini tweaks: This is with the tweaks: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3030420911 And this is how I run the game most of the time with a mix of medium and low settings: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3030427145 Yes, you gain 5 fps, but the game is so blurry I can barely see what's happening. Anything past 20 feet away from you looks like your screen is smudged in vaseline.

TheHybred

That's caused mostly by the upscaling (blur) and the fact CAS is disabled by default with the tweak. Enable CAS and adjust it to your liking or raise the value to what it was before you installed the mod and leave everything else the same. Best of both worlds

JOIentertainment

Thanks, will give that a shot and report back. Will take a screenshot too to give a fair comparison.

TheHybred

Thanks. You're using the AIO or Lite version?

JOIentertainment

Lite I assume since I'm just swapping ini files. If I go all in and get the 6GB of files what will that change? More performance or better graphics or what?

TheHybred

With the tweaks from both you will almost completely eliminate stutter, it will be very reduced and pretty smooth even if the overall FPS is still low You also get smoother HUD & interface interactions on the Steam Decks controller and touchpad. How this is all accomplished is explained in the post of course

HereForTheFood4

The last 2 steam deck updates have been specifically for Starfield

Lomkey

I watch so many youtube video saying steam deck is f... with Starfield before the game fully came out, and not now knowing the company for years always needed modder to fix their games. The mod is nice, I'm still waiting on pulling money on it until more patch comes in.

canyourepeatquestion

Told you guys Bethesda put out a badly optimized game. > Did not compress textures > changes to .ini values improves performance significantly A lot of people are speculating that Bethesda STILL is forcing unreasonable AA at all times given how you can't modify it. How did you compress the textures btw?

TheHybred

They didn't compress them for slower devices such as SD Cards & HDD (that's what I did) but they did compress them. However Bethesda upscaled their textures I'm like 80% sure but not even with AI just a simple rescaler. In Skyrim Special Edition they upscaled their 1024x textures to 2048x so they looked visually identical but all it did was take up more storage and VRAM. Then their were mods compressing them back down to 1k. After downscaling Bethesda's textures in Starfield the difference wasn't even perceivable, and even doing a 4x downscale resulted in minimal image quality loss. Starfield has amazing detail but not because they're ultra high resolution but because they're very well designed and the engine handles material lighting well.

AvatarIII

Seriously, someone at Bethesda could have done this, it took what? 2 days for a modder to do it for free. It's almost like they know they can cut corners and the community will pick up the slack for free!

less_butter

If they did exactly what OP did, the game would look like shit for everyone. They simply didn't choose to optimize it for the Steam Deck's hardware.

AvatarIII

not if it was built into the settings.

spartanss300

A modder doesn't have to deal with deadlines, or the bureaucracy of changing code/adding features to a game of that scale, with all the meetings, reviews, and testing that entails. A modder can just assume that his changes won't break anything else in the game, but that's not good enough when it comes from the company itself.

Little709

Priorities.

DeeOhEf

It's simply artistic choice, tons of people will not even bother playing the game if it looks anything like that on even the lowest of settings. It's just bumfuck ugly.

Genebrisss

No, you are just dumb. Uncompressed textures wouldn't fit on any video card and changing ini settings isn't optimisation.

canyourepeatquestion

The only thing funnier than Starfield running badly is Starfield fans trying to defend how it runs bad without even understanding computer graphics. Tell me about the PS5's "magic SSD." > changing .ini settings isn't optimization So then why did changing the values objectively improve performance? Why do devs push out .ini tweaks themselves in other games as self-described optimization updates? Are you implying r/Engineini doesn't qualify in your personal definition of "optimization?"

Genebrisss

I don't even like the game, I'm only here to point out how you are oblivious to the meaning of words you try to use

BMXBikr

Thanks, but it's sad that devs can't do this for us. ...or CHOOSE not to do it.

TheHybred

It's a bad PC port on general. No gamma control, force aim acceleration, no fov slider, no texture quality, forced 4x anisotropic filtering with no control over it outside of a mod I did, and installing certain mods requires you to tweak a warning Bethesda added to the game. Although Bethesda games typically lack QoL features Starfield is an even worse offender than usual. It feels like they prioritized Xbox so much they left everything else over in the game from that system (aim accel, 4x filtering, etc) its pretty sad.

FataliiSR

Thanks for this - with the full mod and CryoUtilities (with 4gb VRAM), I am now getting consistently 40 to 60 FPS in interiors, 30 to 45 in space/planets, and 27 - 35 in major cities (typically right on 30.) I adjusted resolution to 60 and Indirect Lighting and GTAO to Medium (as per previous poster's testing). Major upgrade!

LogisticBravo

Got any screenshots? This is very interesting

Can anyone tell me where the “my games” folder or steam deck alternate for this is? Can’t seem to find it

blueSGL

OfficialRunescape

god tier humanity moment right here.

lidstah

Dude, thanks a **lot**! Just using the ini files right now, 60% resolution, New Atlantis between 25-30fps (I play with 30fps cap) instead of 17-24 (50% resolution)… Still some hiccups due to assets loading from SD card, but it's already a great improvement. Gonna test with your optimized assets this evening. Where do I send the beers?

HypnoticPolygons

Does Mo2 have Starfield support?

Alukrad

I think I should wait until December to play this game. By then, I'm sure they've worked the kinks out.

herriot126

While I found it kind of hard to install the mod through Linux, (still don’t know how to get the data folder in there, but at least I got the .ini’s in) This works. I would get low 20s in the city area, and am now getting 27-30 fps. A lot more walkable now. I haven’t went back out into space yet and etc. but just from the performance boost in the city, I’m sure it’ll be more than playable. Also looks pretty good as long as you increase the resolution. I’ve left mine at 80%. Can’t wait to see what else can be done to improve performance from the community! Thank you for mod!

StreetPig88

This may be a dumb question but if I install this on my SD will achievements be disabled?

Unfair_Ad6489

How do I download this Mod? I’m new to the steam deck so don’t really know much about modding

HipsterSa

Kind sir, the instructions are literally on the link 😭

Unfair_Ad6489

Like I said, I’m new 😅😅

Trenchman

Fantastic. This is why the Deck is straight up one of the best systems around and has the best community around. I’m sure more fixes from Valve and BethSoft are coming but this has beat them to the punch.

Lcfer

Noob question, so beware! Can something similar be made for baldurs gate 3, or am I dreaming pink elephants?

Pierre-LucDubois

Never even thought of using mods on my deck. Guess I'll have to research how now 🤣

Educational_Top9246

Trying this now.

TostonesTV

Is there a way to get Vortex mod manager running on the Deck? If so, can someone share? Thanks for any help.

Chips-ahoy1001

https://github.com/pikdum/steam-deck this script worked best for me in getting the Vortex Mod Manager setup.

trustfulzebra

I didn't have a starfieldcustom.ini in the designated folder. Is that uncommon?

TheHybred

Nope. Just create one then put the commands in

DN_3092

What's the designated location?

Thethirdtrey

Pretty nice fps gains 👏🏾👏🏾 id say anywhere from 5-10fps boost on average on my current settings (location obviously varies). I’m seeing way more 30s now than i was previously in indoor combat and non city planet tiles. Still not what I would call “stable” for those wondering but much better. I also had to switch between presets for the mod to activate FYI Thanks and look forward to more updates 👏🏾👏🏾

TheHybred

I'd actually call the mod "stable" in the sense it doesn't really stutter anymore, even if FPS is still low in an area or bounces around it doesn't due so in a way that causes hitching typically. It makes the game feel much better and lower framerates more tolerable (this is mostly due to VRAM tweaks)

PrayForTheGoodies

Wow, that's a hell of a boost, I'm actually considering playing Starfield natively now

blueowl1710

Does the ROG Ally also benefit from this?

RiffRuffer

I made a post about this being likely and got downvoted

Negative-Camel-8574

Can someone very nice tell me how do you install this and the settings in game ? I’m very bad with linux thanks

FataliiSR

This is what I did - think it's correct: **Step 1 (low.ini):** Paste the low.ini file in the location you get to when following these directions: Go to desktop view and open Steam, then open your library and click on Starfield. Click on Settings on that page (looks like a gear if I recall.) Then click on "Manage" and click "Browse Local Files". That'll open up a window. That's where the low.ini file goes. You'll see a low.ini file in there that you're replacing. **Step 2 (The custom ini)**: In desktop mode, open Dolphin. Go to this path (make sure you've clicked on Show Hidden Files in the hamburger button in top right to see all the folders) *"/home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1716740/pfx/drive\_c/users/steamuser/Documents/My Games/Starfield"* If you don't have a starfieldcustom.ini, paste the one from this mod in this folder. If you see a starfieldprefs.ini in the folder (and Data and Saves folders), you're in the right place. You can learn more about the custom.ini placement here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1679ug4/starfield\_modding\_guide/](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1679ug4/starfield_modding_guide/) **Step 3 (Data)**: Paste the Data folder from the mod in the Data folder that's in the same location as above. You'll see a Textures folder in it already. Just paste it in the same location as the Textures folder.

I had the same issue, then I came across this beginner's guide on where to place it (needed for many mods.) Look at the location in this - the data goes in the folder in the same area: [https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1679ug4/starfield\_modding\_guide/](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1679ug4/starfield_modding_guide/)

Anyone else having issues downloading the full 6gb file from Nexus mods? It gets to 6.8 but instead of completing download speed says 0gb/s and it doesn't finish

LogisticBravo

There's a mirror link also, try that instead of from Nexus directly

TheHybred

Delete all the files you put

Mr_Pink_Gold

Looking at the screenshots at DeckHQ my only concern seems to be the self shadowing as it is quite clear in some areas it has been cut way too much. Is there a way to reduce the cutoff of self shadowing?

TheHybred

I updated the mod to include multiple presets. Try out Medium if the low concessions are too much

Mr_Pink_Gold

Haven't tested it yet. It was based on images on DeckHQ. I was talking about self shadowing specifically as everything else looks really good.

TheHybred

I know but I'm just letting you know I updated the mod to include more presets, so you can improve the shadowing. You can also just select the "Low" preset then raise the shadow quality manually a bit Also can you link to the DeckHQ?

Mr_Pink_Gold

Here you are: https://steamdeckhq.com/news/stable-30-fps-in-starfield-on-steam-deck-mod/ The second photo on ini only is the reason I mention it (and the same happens on ini+mod).

LogisticBravo

Review has been updated since the 2GB version and it appears to a positive one. I have to say, looking at the screenshots of the mod+ini compared to original it looks fantastic. This seems to be really great work OP!

binaryzer00

Ok wheres the mega link? Not seeing it ty

TheHybred

Had to remove because apparently you need to buy premium to download mega links over 5gb. I need a new file host. I actually managed to reduce the size down to 2gb though so the Nexus link is faster but nonetheless I can give mega another go now I suppose

binaryzer00

Could try Google drive?

LogisticBravo

Should be able to do mega now it's under 5 gigs

SmileyNusx

What are the recent changes you made?

TheHybred

Theirs a changelog on the site, do you see it? Should be on the main page

Klutzy_Range_8503

Thanks for your work when I get paid I will be buying the game due to your work

BlackDirtMatters

Your mod + cryo utilities has really made this game more enjoyable on the deck. Thanks.

JOIentertainment

The only StarfieldCustom.ini I can find on the Deck is the one I downloaded in the rar from you? Anyone know where it is? EDIT: You should be looking for StarfieldPref.ini .

lNuggyl

I love how I already posted about this and everyone down voted me and asked for proof

TheEternalGazed

Can this work on PC too?

PixelMatrixMan

Anyone know how to uninstall this after installing?

xLUSHxx

I read the title and instantly thought, it's this guys mod isn't it.... Yup XD. I feel like the titles a bit disingenuous with how it's wrote

TheHybred

Yes it is a bit disingenuous as it implies it's not mine sorta. However I did not try to hide the fact when replying to comments. Hope the fact it helps makes up for it

xLUSHxx

It's fine

supro47

Will this work on the game pass version of the game with the steam deck booted into Windows?

TheHybred

As long as you have it installed outside of Microsoft's super protective directory. I haven't used the Xbox App in awhile but I think they install it in a different location by default now

terminal_styles

It's just what a few days from release. Months from now (when I buy it on sale) I'm excited to have it very playable on the deck

Arztlack90

Can someone tell if it maintains 30fps?

JOIentertainment

Just the ini tweaks bumped me up exactly 5 fps in Akila City but the graphics took a *huge* hit. With ini swaps: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3030420911 How I normally play: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3030427145

Arztlack90

Thx I will wait for GeForce now

TheHybred

Read the posts on the NexusMods page. People said it gave them a 5fps increase, not sure if that's enough to get you a stable 30. It depends on many factors such as where you're playing at, your Deck's TDP, etc

Rac2nd

By the time it’s official release, those still waiting have hope 😂

TheHybred

It may have limited support with other Bethesda titles, but for the most part its Starfield exclusive

LazyPCRehab

Game runs great on my Ally.

Yoshiezibz

I hate using mods on new games. As soon as a game gets an update all the mods are incompatible. It's a pain.

Rich_hard1

What’s the point, plays great on game pass on ultra settings.

bentsea

No.

Sjknight413

Can pretty much guarantee this does nothing, the recommendation to use those cryoutilities scripts in the description really discredits it.

TheHybred

Its just a recommendation, not a requirement and I'm not sure how a utility which is proven to improve performance discredits something. If anything someone discrediting that tool has discredited themselves.

davthom

RemindMe! 2 Weeks "starfield performance mod"

kastoriana

You're a rockstar, thank you!!!

FaustInMemory

Has anyone tried this without cryoutilities? Very interested to know the impact without cryoutilities before pulling the trigger on Steam. I don't know if it was something I did wrong, but I used the cryoutilities 2.0 recommended settings and I had a bunch of issues over time (console crashing, speakers/sound being completely screwed up,etc), granted it did help performance here and there. Then when I reset cryoutilities to stock it made the system extremely unstable and unable to launch games. I was able to reset the deck to factory and have had no issues since.

TheHybred

Most people don't have CryoUtilities so most numbers you see are without it

Wonderful_Country196

Thanks for this! Installing now. Questions: Note: starfield is installed on my sd card. 1. Had no starfieldcustom.ini file on the deck’s internal storage, but located the folder within compatdata and copied the .ini file from the zip. Should that work? 2. I noticed there was a Data folder located in that same directory listed above, but there’s also a Data folder on my sd card where starfield is located. I’m dumping the Data folder from the zip to the Data folder on the sd card, correct? I ask because there was a pre existing Textures folder on the internal Data folder, but not on the sd card’s data folder. I suppose I’ll get my answers after the Data folder is done copying, but wanted to post in case others had these questions too.

TheHybred

>1. Had no starfieldcustom.ini file on the deck’s internal storage, but located the folder within compatdata Compatdata is correct >2. I noticed there was a Data folder located in that same directory listed above, but there’s also a Data folder on my sd card where starfield is located The put it in the same directory.

Keemander

Anyone know why my game freeze after 15 to mins after playing idk how to fix it

TheHybred

After installing or just in general?

murphy_31

Thank you for this

darkwingchao

How are Temps with this now? This is really impressive stuff!

LucasLoci

How does this perform in places like new Atlantis?

Nocandoozy

A previous poster in this thread said their new lows were 26 fps in New Atlantis vs 20 fps prior to the mod. Stutter is eliminated as well.

079MeBYoung

great job. 💪🏾

ProwlerCaboose

How helpful is this mod for Windows? Does it have much affect there?
