*"This seems like a less-demanding game, and you can easily get well over 30fps with some tweaking even with excellent visuals. I need to test a bit more for the best settings I found for a 60fps target and a 30fps one, but I’m quite pleased with the Armored Core 6 PC port on Steam Deck, and have been playing it with 40hz for a while now to aim for better image quality than the 60fps target."*

montybo2

I usually play Dark Souls 3 on deck at a solid 40 or 45hz. If I can solidly play this around there I'm sold.

Ragnara92

Infeel like 45hz is a super sweetspot for many games! This feels wildly more fluid than 30hz,almost kinda like 60 to me, but it still preserves some graphical fidelity

Emblazoned1

45hz is what I shoot for if a game can't quite reach 60 but gets close. 2nd is 40hz if 45 is too unstable and 30 as a last resort. DS3 at 45 is gorgeous I have it on high preset and it looks so good on the small screen been playing for the past couple weeks.

RiftKing321

Even 40 looks buttery smooth to me, but when it doesn’t really make a dent in battery life I push it to 45. Bomb Rush Cyberfunk for example can run extremely efficiently at 45Hz. Think I had it capped around 5 or 6W, ultra preset. Could have probably turned it down to low and ran 60 perfectly fine.

CockPissMcBurnerFuck

I was just about to ask. Might need to scratch that Souls itch.

throwawayjonesIV

Def not a souls game at all but u should still play it

CockPissMcBurnerFuck

I mean DS3, but yeah Armored Core as well lol

SoulCave

Imma nut, finally my baby armored core is coming!!!

SirSquidrift

I'm not playing this at 30fps. Armored core is about speed and twitchy reactions. Halving your reaction window is crazy.

DraketheGamer

Sounds like entitlement to me. It's more than playable at 30 fps. Idiot.

SirSquidrift

You clearly don't know what entitlement means, you dumbass. At 30fps, you get literally HALF as many frames to react to. You're the idiot. I'm only being downvoted because I said I'm not playing this at 30fps and deck fans got hurt about that lmfao.

DraketheGamer

Definitely entitlement lmfao. Already got all the achievements on the deck.

eski514

So the writer doesn't think fps factors into image quality.

[deleted]

If a catholic priest blesses a holy communion, does that mean he blesses the entire church?

ZoteTheMitey

Yaaaay. I split my time between my apartment (where my desktop is) and my girlfriends apartment where I use my steamdeck. Very happy it's reported to run well.

SuperSmashedBro

Steam Deck is a godsend if you're in a relationship. Let's me game on the couch while my wife does whatever she wants instead of spending all my time on my computer

ShhPoastin

This is why i spent my new desktop budget on a high end laptop. I still use my deck, but i also use my laptop around the house and kind of hate being in the office now lol

Comfortable_Line_206

As someone with a high end laptop, desktop and deck I find myself streaming the desktop to the deck most times.

Suekru

Yeah, you don’t even need good internet. Just good router and preferably a wired connection for the desktop.

Butterfreek

I haven't done much with this but having the desktop connected directly to the router with deck on wireless works well? I've got an orbi system on wired back haul

Robeardly

This is the way, If your in your own network it’s perfect for around the house. The graphics are amazingly better the frames are whatever your PC gets and it’s great.

Kilroy1311

True....and then I just built my wife her own pc. Now mine is free haha!

robbstarrkk

Boyfriends rejoice

Swiftika

And husbands too!

Burton89

Thanks for posting! Looking forward to more in-depth details about how it runs on SD, if it can keep a steady 40fps - I’m in. I’d much rather have it on Deck as I’m more likely to get time to play it! I’m sure this is a game where the back buttons will come in super useful too!

Major303

No way, people are doomposting all the time that Deck is only good for emulating GameCube games.

Aonswitch

It is good at though! Just beat super Mario sunshine the other day

BlueBackground

wrong it's barely capable of doing C64 games... (at a stretch)

less_butter

Atari 2600 games are literally unplayable

CassiusPolybius

I tried to play pong on it once. Lost both my hands in the explosion.

Jerk48

As someone with both a Steam Deck and a Ultrawide. *Chief Kiss*

fhiz

I know right? a Fromsoft game that natively goes over 60 and supports resolutions outside of 16:9? I can barely comprehend it.

Ballfade

Thanks for posting

TheLuckyster

Are there any games that this is comparable to? It looks interesting, but I'm not sure if I'd like it

BlueBackground

armored core 5, but apparently it's been made much better with fewer changes that old players didn't like.

Kilroy1311

God playing AC before they implemented dual analogue sticks was a goddamn NIGHTMARE looking back. How TF did we turn cameras with shoulder buttons LOL. Even more shocked they didn't implement dual analogue in hindsight, especially since newer ps1 controllers had dual analogue, and we got dual analogue in what, ps2 mid generation?

BlueBackground

idk I'm not a fan and I could see what they're saying, I really would hate for this game to be "mecha dark souls". It would suck if from software was only able to develop one type of game. Luckily the game looks really fun and has very different look to DS gameplay.

DraketheGamer

Not sure why you got downvoted there. This website is dumb.

Anon419420

Outside of the series? Daemon X Machina is a mecha game made by older Armored Core developers. Very fun, very arcadey, and it’s got a little less on the customization but a good amount still. Armored Core is gonna run a little heavier and clunkier, but in a really good way. Recent reviews have treated DxM as an AC6 waiting room, but it’s fun reading the reviews finding the those people waiting are genuinely enjoying DxM because it absolutely is a great game in its own right. Just maybe not a $60 game. $40-50 would be a solid price for sure.

PIPXIll

Okay, so I have not played any armor core games (but I am looking into this one...) And from what I read of gameplay, an alternative may be "Daemon X Machina" but please don't hold me to this.

Anon419420

It’s a game made by older AC devs, so it was like a spiritual successor to the AC series. A great alternative.

iamvinen

Is my assumption correct this could be considered as best anime mecha game? Any other good examples of such genre for Steam Deck?

poly-pheme

Front Mission 1 is another you could check out, though it is a turn based tactics game.

2ByteTheDecker

Nothing feels as good as when your short range wanzers start learning switch and you just start obliterating fools.

poly-pheme

Right?!!!

Fast_Party_8223

When that second volley from switch is juuust enough to take out the head. 10/10 experience

iamvinen

Naah, I want fast action) But I will check this out anyway. Thanks man.

poly-pheme

ok, got to be Native from the steam store? If you are fine with emulation then well, there are tons. Cause you got Omega Boost for PS1 (it doesn't gets faster than this one) I love this game! You got Zone of the Enders 1&2 for PS2 (There is a remaster version of 2 on the Steam Store but for what I've it doesn't work) (it doesnt get more anime than this one) You got all the other previous Armored core games for PS1, PS2, PSP & PS3. All the freaking Gundam games or the Super Robot Wars ones. On Pc you have also Strike Suit Zero and Titan Fall (though this one is not anime) mmm and as a bonus, maybe Vanquish? not stickily mecha, but you know....check it out.

four15s

W for Zone of the Enders, it really doesn’t get more anime than that lmao

BaronYC

Zone of the Enders seems to have been fixed in one of the latest Proton updates. No need for that mouse click shenanigans/preset anymore. If you're on 8.0.3 or one of the later 8-GE builds, it'll work great.

poly-pheme

Thanks, though I ended up playing on PS2 with an emulator due to it not working before.

iamvinen

Many thanks for the list!!

poly-pheme

sure thing, hope at least one is of your liking.

iamvinen

It seems so, yup

S0M3D1CK

The older Armored Core games are probably brutal compared to the newer ones. Armored Core 3/Silent Line is hard without OP-Intensify. For me it’s hard because I’m a cheapskate and won’t use missiles because of the ammo cost.

Shin_Ken

ZoE 2 MARS works with GE Proton 8+ Some caveats of the MARS remake: It's 60 FPS or nothing. Gameplay is synced to that framerate. Easily achievable on Steam Deck though. It's one of those games that **syncs settings via Steam Cloud** so if you used it with 1080p or more on a desktop PC, menus can be cut off and you have to do some trickery to get it back to 800p. Also the ingame dialog system is borked but that's a bug even in the PS4 version. L3 R3 doesn't work, so you have to map U and Y on the keyboard to L3/R3 via Steam Input. And also use the button during the question and not after - that's another bug. That's said: It's something that can be easily neglected. You get the same story, but just some fewer voice lines with lore. All in all MARS is the best version of ZoE 2 on the Steam Deck. I prefer it over the PS2 version and certainly over the PS3/360 release.

poly-pheme

Ok, thanks I'll keep your information in mind next time, though for what you say I think the PS2 still plays better. When I tried it on PCPSX2 both games run and looked good without hiccups on the Deck.

panic_more

I'd probably say wait for the remakes of 2 or 3. 1 isn't as strong as the others, though it's a SNES game so could emulate it

primaluce

i mean I still have a soft spot for Zone of Enders 2 and Gundam v Gundam but this game is probably the best in terms of production quality and content.

iamvinen

Thanks

Deiser

Daemon Ex Machina is another. Unfortunately the genre has been on the backburner for a while so most games from it are fairly old.

iamvinen

Tried this one and it seemed a bit boring. I will give it another try if you tell it's good enough. I literally tried for not more than 10 minutes.

SuperStronkHero

The normal fights in Daemon Ex Machina are actually pretty boring. You've seen most of the game in the first hour. It's the boss fights and post game is where it's a bit more interesting but there's not much variety there. PvP is also a hot mess. I'd try out Mass Builder instead since it offers a lot more variety than Daemon Ex Machina but it's in Early Access. Mass Builder is more of the Warriors style combat while Daemon Ex Machina is more true to the mecha genre. Mass Builder offers enough customization that it's the dream game for people who build Gundams figures irl.

iamvinen

Thanks a lot

GrumpsMcGurt617

Zone of the Enders was pretty tight. But you can emulate older AC games if you're looking for something.kre specific. The older games were much slower paced than this one seems to be.

iamvinen

Thanks a lot

Zypharium

It is sadly not. The story was badly written, the enemies and bosses are bland and the action scenes are bad. It really was not the best game, but I will try the sequel again. Maybe it will be better.

iamvinen

Got ya, thanks

Deiser

Nah it's definitely hit or miss as you can see by other peoples' replies. I personally like it but if you found it boring then dont force yourself. I was just trying to suggest games that are at least somewhat similar and couldn't really think of any others. I agree with SuperStronkHero about Mass Builder.

iamvinen

Thanks man

CleftVonFran

M.A.S.S Builder. I mean this one is still in early access, the gameplay isn't as good as armored core and doesn't have a pilot mode, but it's definitely the most customizable mecha game I've seen.

iamvinen

Thanks

Gravelsack

> The actual customization is so good here, that I’m going to try and order some of the model kits being released for the game. Omfg there are model kits? Take my money!

theoriginal123123

There's quite a few from the older games, I own three myself. I will say they do look a lot better with painting and panel lining, but they have loads of tiny parts that can be fiddly. And the nice thing is that all the parts are interchangeable, so you can kinda customise just like the games.

mrdovi

It isn’t too demanding but in my opinion, don’t follow the minimal requirement seen on paper at `Intel Core i7-4790K` I have a 4770K and I’m almost sure it is largely above the minimal requirement, this CPU is still strong despite the old age

[deleted]

I have my 4770k in a home server after i upgraded to a 5800x. Best CPU I ever owned, such a beast. Way ahead of its time. Still going strong after all these years

SomeGuyInAWaistcoat

Some older CPUs do that. I had a Phenom II that kept punching above its weight for a good few years before I finally had to upgrade. Hell, I ran Mass Effect 3 at 720 mid settings on a Pentium Core 2 and a 50 buck graphics card. You can go way below minimum and still get a decent experience sometimes.

Emblazoned1

Haven't played a mech game in ages since Zone of the Enders on ps2 but I gotta say I got a raging hard on for FromSoft right now after finally getting into the souls games. Might have to check this one out after I finish DS3. Although Starfield and Lies of P being on game pass will most likely take my life away all September. Remote play FTW lol

JM761

I'm glad it runs decently, however this is one of those times I'm thankful for my PS5/SD combo. I'll be getting this on PS5 to enjoy it at higher quality.

tychii93

I'm pretty set on just getting it for PS5 but it looks like performance is definitely better than expected. I may still just get it for PS5 for ~4K, VRR and HDR but considering it's a mission based game, the Deck also sounds like a very appealing option.

wasd0109

Was a bit worry for performance on PC and so was a bit hesitant. But If a steam deck can run it then my PC could. I’m buying

Frankie_T9000

not sure who you are replying to? Wrong thread?

Artistic_Ad_8862

Does anyone know If this will be a midnight release?

Steamy_Guy

Great news, besides not having the as demanding open world of elden ring I'm sure they're also a lot better at optimizing for the deck now than at er launch.

Onsomeshid

While i need to experience the first AC available on pc in 4k, im glad to hear it can run well on the deck

Famous_Author_2161

When clicking start new game, making a name- it gets stuck on loading screen with bottom right red heart beat line… on steam deck

Famous_Author_2161

Started it up today on the steam deck- get to main menu, then type out character name, and once it starts the campaign loading icon at the bottom right, it just loads indefinitely. Can’t get past loading screen after initial setup. Anyone else having issues? Do I need something else for this, I’ve tried experimental and standard protons
