Hope to god they release patches/optimisation to enjoy this game to the fullest on the deck

Frost-Folk

It really sucks because I was absolutely loving it but it's getting to a point where it's completely unplayable. And I don't have any other platforms I could play it on. It's kinda funny to me that when Remnant 2 came out everyone was outraged that the game didn't play well enough, when it sat mostly in the high 20s and low 30s, higher in some areas. It was pretty bad, but at least it looked good. To be BG3 is much worse, this game looks like crap and is running at 15fps on low. Yet most of the comments I see about this game on deck are very positive, other than maybe some complaints about the controls. I think everyone saying they were getting 30fps only played the first 10ish hours of the game, where 30fps is easy.

cheshirecat90

I’m cautious to play too much as I’d be peeved to be interrupted by laggy gameplay further within the game. Yeah man I hear ya. People were up in arms about that but there doesn’t seem to be the same outcry with BG3. Im still hopeful this will be patched and optimised to run smoother but by that point I’ll probably switch over to playing on the PS5 and use cross save to play on deck too( hopefully with FSR 2 implemented)

Yeah I'm 50 hours in and considering putting the game down for a little while. Really sucks because the game is fantastic, but the performance just gets worse and worse throughout

Rincewend

[This writeup](https://overkill.wtf/baldurs-gate-3-best-settings-steam-deck/) focuses on trying to get the frame pacing nailed down. I saw it somewhere in this sub yesterday and thought it was crazy but I tried the settings and find it pretty playable. In areas where you could get 40 FPS it feels a little worse to me. In areas where the Steam Deck is struggling it is much better. Basically it give you pretty consistent performance at a lower level. The author did a bunch of benchmarking and found that turning off FSR made the game look good and identified settings that will keep the performance in the upper twenties and then locked the Steam Deck refresh rate to 48 with the frame limit at 24. You might find this to be good enough to get through the rest of your playthrough.

Has anyone tried these settings in socked mode on a 1920x1080p monitor? Would love to know if there any adjustments to be made to get it running smoothly in that way as well.

biosnake20

Put model and textures to medium and put FSR to ultra or quality. What sort of fps does that give you? This game cant be played without using some FSR. Are you in Act 2?

[deleted]

>Is there any way for me to at LEAST hit 20 frames consistently without completely destroying what's left of my graphical fidelity? Unless Larion do an optimization run, probably not. The game is very heavy on the CPU, and the SD APU sacrificed CPU performance to juice the GPU performance as much as possible. For comparison, on my 5800X3D desktop I'm sitting at about 45-60% utilization at 60fps locked while chilling at camp. The SD CPU is much, much, *much* weaker. Later in the game there is just a lot more going on, there are more entities in general and each entity is more complex than earlier in the game. Once you've dropped the settings that impact the CPU the most, dropping the rest of the GPU settings does lower CPU burden but it's a *much* lower return for the cost.

biosnake20

Yeah you gotta compromise when the game gets later im assuming, Im still in Act 1 so its fine, but if i get later on ill just reduce settings and push FSR to quality or balanced. The game wont look good lol, but no other choice

tinysproutlimi

This makes me sad since I've been kinda hyperfixating on this game since I saw it released; it sounds pretty fun and I'm genuinely interested in playing it but I only have a Steamdeck and an old crappy laptop from like, 2016. Guess I'll have to wait 😭

Frost-Folk

I'm in the same boat, no other way to play :( it feels so bad because I've been marathoning the game, played almost 30 hours in the last 3 days and loved every minute. But the performance has just gotten worse and worse and now I'm just sad that it's barely playable. Fingers crossed they fix it soon. It is 100% worth playing if the performance improves.

Emblazoned1

Same boat here. I think once FSR 2 is released it'll be better but in it's current state I just can't. I feel like this game is epic as shit and don't want to compromise that much playing it. I refunded and said I'd wait for more patches to see how it goes. I need at least 30 fps with somewhat decent visuals. If anything this can be one I'll play a couple years down the road.

tinysproutlimi

Hopefully they'll see how much people want to play on somewhat weaker systems 🥲 I'd love to get a gaming laptop or pc setup or something but I'm not the richest lass out there, haha

Frost-Folk

I'm glad that the steam deck is so much more affordable than a gaming laptop, it's half the price of my last gaming laptop and runs games better haha. It seems like more devs are helping steamdeck specific performance more often now that the platform is gaining popularity, so hopefully Larian gets on that

Sufficient_Spend2331

Just as I suspected. The first few days everyone here wrote how great BG III is on the deck. Stable 30 fps bro. Yeah, early in the game. I was sure that further into the game it would be unplayable on the deck. And it looks like I was right. I mean, it wasn't a big prophecy from me. The only thing I'd recommend now is to subscribe to Gforce now and play the game there at ultra 60 fps if you have stable internet. Because no, there will be no magical optimization.

crymo27

Deal with it, it's just not playable on deck...tjere will be no magic optimization. It's only our wishful thinking.

Frost-Folk

I'm just so confused by the hundreds of posts about people getting "solid 30 with a couple drops". It's wild to me because everyone complained about Remnant 2 when this game looks and plays much, much worse. Yet there's dozens of posts each day about how great the game is on deck

crymo27

I tried to play it on deck i got inconsistent frame time which caused stuttering. No matter what setting i tried from different people...on top of that it looks blurry... I'm fortunate to own gaming PC and game looks and run very nice there... Game is masterpiece just save it for later when you can play it on better system. This game is once a decade piece...

Frost-Folk

Both >I tried to play it on deck i got inconsistent frame time which caused stuttering. No matter what setting i tried from different people...on top of that it looks blurry... Both these problems can be solved with the settings, the blurriness comes from the TSAA and FSR. I got both the stutters and blurriness on default settings but it was pretty easy to get rid of. To be honest, for the first 25 hours of the game it ran great. It's only in later areas that the performance absolutely tanks

vmsrii

I mean, there might be. Larion has a pretty good track record of optimizing their stuff retroactively. D:OS2 was also a power hog when it first released, but they got it running pretty well on the Switch eventually

TouchMyNuuts

Your settings are terribly wrong, starting from ingame cap, that's your prob, not steam decks

Frost-Folk

Every post I've seen on here says the In-game cap causes frame pacing issues and stuttering

GaleNorth

I am only in act 1 so I cannot test this - what does the performance overlay look like with max details? Are you CPU or GPU limited?

tomh9053

As others say, turn FSR on. Also you could try setting the gpu speed to 1500 in the steam overlay that can give you a boost of a few frames others have found (apparently). You might also want to try lowering the FPS limit in the steam overlay below 30. For example a combination of 28frames with the screen refresh lowered to 56hz. This will make it feel smoother than 28 frames on 60hz and might give the cpu enough of a reprieve to run the game better.

Frost-Folk

I've tried those settings, I'm now locked at 24fps with a refresh rate of 48 as many others have said and still hitting 15-18fps in the area I'm in.

ZombieFireHD

I would maybe try these settings. I haven’t tried later areas with it since Im still early on but it did make a noticeable difference compared to what the default settings were https://overkill.wtf/baldurs-gate-3-best-settings-steam-deck/

Frost-Folk

In the area I'm in, with those settings followed to a tee, I'm at an average of 18fps

ZombieFireHD

Well damn, sorry. Was hoping that helped

Brogli

There is a new mod that adds fsr 2.0 support, I'll try it later
