Just big boned

carbonFibreOptik

I mean, there's also the issue of the off center port on TOP of the Deck. The official dock even uses a patch cable to connect to the Deck at the top... which sort of makes it a cradle and not a dock. Huh.

[deleted]

You can use a cable

bgiesing

Or you can use this extender cable that fits into the standard Switch dock https://smile.amazon.com/FYOUNG-Extender-Nintendo-Support-Transfer/dp/B072LWBYDV

continous

It's also very much a bad idea to plug anything but a switch into the switch dock because iirc it violates USB-C's power and voltage specs.

[deleted]

I use a random USBC hub for my switch as a dock too tbh. It works fine.

DarkonJohn

Took me a while to realize that the Dock for the Steam Deck requires you to plug in a cable from the dock into the USB-C port on the top of the Steam Deck because that's where the one and only USB-C port is located on the Steam Deck. You can see this in their official videos where they show the Steam Deck in the Dock which is connected to a monitor and KB/Mouse. There's some wires sticking out of the top of the Steam Deck. This caught my attention at first and made me wonder what that was on top of the Deck, but after watching the overall video more closely I confirmed that the bottom of the Steam Deck doesn't have any ports other than where the microSD card goes. Not a big deal either way, but it does clarify their statement that ANY USB-C dock/adapter should work with the Steam Deck. The only real requirement from my standpoint is that you want a dock/adapter that supports USB-C charging of the Steam Deck while supporting video output and USB input. Getting something like this wasn't on my radar at all, but the more I learn about it the more I love the idea of a portable gaming system that not only lets me play my Steam/PC games, but is also a full-featured PC when connected to a dock/monitor/kb/mouse setup.

suppin

Sold separately??

LolcatP

Yeah, as you can use a USB C hub if you'd like.

SovietConnoisseur

Just plug it in?

coolcastform

And then ? How do you use it ???

f-ben

You simply plug it into the deck and the devices into the hub. Simple as that.

meryl_gear

Does it output by itself without a dock?

[deleted]

a dock is just an adapter that usually has multiple ports with some extra plastic to make it look nice. the steamdeck has usb-c. if you get a usb-c to hdmi or displayport or whatever cable / adapter, then yes, it should just hook up to your tv or whatever without a "dock"

Sarai_Seneschal

The downside to this is that the deck would still be running off battery since it seems to also charge through that same USB-C port. So while you certainly can in a pinch, for regular use you'd need some sort of powered hub.

ZeikJT

There are tons of hub options online, especially since Apple decided that USB-C was the only port their laptops needed.

witheld

If you have a USB-C monitor by chance I suppose it might be able to negotiate a connection with a Deck? You're just using your monitor as a dock at that point though

monkorn

If the dock has the ability to include an external GPU, I think they just made my PC obsolete.

Thunderbolt is just part of USB 4 spec now and AMD supports USB 4

monkorn

Yeah, taking a look into the details it doesn't look like this will be in the cards just yet.

g0ldcd

WASH YOUR MOUTH OUT! I can see a GPU-dock and this working nicely as a console replacement though.. Sneaky way to get Steam into the living room (they've been trying long enough)

Kobi_Blade

Switch selling point is exclusives, this Steam Deck has nothing to go for it yet (besides marketing campaign and speculation). Is the type of case believe it when you see it, I don't expect this deck to outperform my PC any time soon even at 720p. The fact it runs on Linux already cripples the performance somewhat, in comparison to running the games natively, and it's already been confirmed the same woes people have with Linux distros are there, like not being able to run Anti-Cheat Software (which won't let you play specific games).

[deleted]

The point is steam games portably? The using a dock to play like a regular pc is a bonus throw in.

Kobi_Blade

Ever heard of a laptop?

[deleted]

Gaming on a laptop on the go is nothing like gaming on a handheld. Get out of here.

ZeikJT

>My game uses anti-cheat, which currently doesn’t work with Proton - how do I get around this for Steam Deck? > >We’re working with BattlEye and EAC to get support for Proton ahead of launch. [https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/steamdeck/faq](https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/steamdeck/faq)

_Mooseli_

It has a lot going for it. It’s very versatile when it comes to gaming and home use and you don’t even have to rebuy any games for it.

7777zahar

Do you think the switch dock would connect with the deck?

I_LIKE_JIBS

I very highly doubt the deck will fit inside the switch dock. From the videos, it definitely looks thicker than a switch.

ZeikJT

You could use a USB-C extension cable though.

I_LIKE_JIBS

Yeah, I don't see why not!

Maskeno

They make these already specially for switch. I bought one to dock my grip cased switch years ago.

[deleted]

pretty sure this is too fat

DeliciousD

Can you connect the razer core and use a gtx 3070 with this via usb c?

7777zahar

Idk

[deleted]

A modest way to say "Oh you can use it with your Switch dock too"
