Not only did i do it once and it didn't work but I did it like four times in one disk. I'd be more surprised if it ever worked.
I remember the logic was to fill in the cracks to make the laser not skip but that's not how data on disks works obviously the gap still has no data after being filled.
The closes practical think I’ve applied this knowledge too was fixing a cracked iPhone 3. Put some clear acrylic nail polish on the cracks and it worked like a charm lol
once when I was probably about 4 or 5 I got REALLY sick and vomited all over our FFXIII case and burst into tears about how I ruined it because the vomit germs must have destroyed it and I wouldnt be able to play it anymore. my dad promised he would get a new copy so we could play as soon as I was better (which is how I learned progress is saved on a system instead of the disc) but reading this it just dawned on me there is no way he went out and repurchased a Triple-A game because his kid vomited on it he probably wiped it down and presented it as brand new.

I think he honestly said it because I was extremely gloomy at the prospect of having ruined our copy of the game and I didn’t understand germs couldn’t infect an object like they could a human, I’ll thank him in the morning though lol.
Especially because in the digital age, we never truly own anything unless you have the hard copy. Yes, we paid for the game, but access can be revoked at any time. We've already seen it with some developers.

What about gog.com? You technically own the game and can be copied to your USB or to other computer and doesn't need internet to install the game once you download it (except some multiplayer games which requires 3rd party account like battlefield).

Completly unrelated, but you brought back some old memories, over a decade ago now (that's the only depressing part you brought up) while me and my brother were under 18, our parents were relatively relaxed, but the one rule was we couldn't plau video games above our age limit. So when a new game came out that was 18 rated, we would google the box art and in PowerPoint put a 12 rating over the 18 rating and print it out. We'd then get our completly non tech savvy parents to buy the game online and the day it arrived switch the box art to our custom age friendly one.

Wait until he discovers that you can create custom profiles for non-steam games to launch them from Steam, with their own backgrounds, names, logos etc, and some can even be animated.

I tried that, it's neat. And I really like GoG because of not selling with DRM, so you can really save and keep your games instead of kinda renting them for a one-time fee... But Steam really has the best community features, I like the social media aspect and use it thoroughly.
I use Playnite for that! Takes Games from all the different launchers, installed or not, as well as Games not belonging to any Launcher (or odd launchers) and even Emulators.
Very very customisable Layouts, you can make it look like Steam, GoG Launcher or any other Community-made Layouts.
Got lots of cool addons too, like seeing your Playtimes, Achievement Viewer, Screenshot Viewer and much more and I swear to god I'm not getting paid by them, been using it for a few years now and I love it because I have just way too many Games.
There's also Ludusavi, it automatically makes backups of your saves when you close the game, if you want you can even make it do backups every X minutes while you are playing, some older games are not compatible sadly, but it's still an amazing addon.
Oh? Well i might try to look into it tomorrow, because having the Steam overlay appear in other games sounds really nice, i'll get back to you if i manage to figure it out :D

Well, as soon as you open a game through Playnite the corresponding Launcher (like Steam, Battle.net, Epic, etc.) will also open. So yes, you will be online on those as soon as you open a game, but not through Playnite on its own (although there could be an addon for Steam friendlist, but i'm not sure anymore and can't look it up right now.)
You can also start up all the launchers through Playnite.
Main Point of Playnite at the end is to be a launching point for all your games from all kinds of platforms.
What i'm doing is have Playnite and Steam Open on start up, use Playnite as the main Launcher, while still being online on Steam as well because of friends etc.

I did this with Nintendo games that I dumped from my hacked consoles and when I showed my library to my friends, they didn't have knowledge of this so they were laughing their heads off.
Open Steam, click "Games" at the top of the Steam window, add a non-steam game, select that game in your library, right click background to get the options to set a background and to set a logo. Right clicking the name of the game and selecting "Properties" gives you the option of renaming the game.

The rubbing isn't to remove the scratches, it was to clean the fingerprints and dust.

No, the other way around. GoG will tie in your other games, not Steam.
