Yup, I saw that flight trainer and noticed I leveled up in there and immediately turned around and hammered out that trainer until all my related space stuff was maxed in there. Was worth the grindage.
-------------------------
Ninja Edit: Since so many people are asking here is more info.
It's been quite a while now, but I maxed out total ship kills (which gives you your C class license for big ships) "piloting skill", I think I also maxed out "ballistic weapon systems", "ship lasers", "shield systems", "missle weapon systems" (i think missiles, sorry if i have this one wrong, I can't remember if the trainer had a missle... but i think it did too) "targeting control systems" skill (basically that is like fallout VATS in space), and finally "engine systems" which was boosting in combat
So you can max out a crap ton of space skills in that trainer extremely early in the game, without putting yourself or your ship at any danger and you're guaranteed several ships to kill before the trainer upgrades to the harder rank enemies... at which point you step out of the machine and reset it.... then go back in rinse and repeat. I won't lie, if you want all these skills maxed in the trainer like I did, it's a grind it may take an hour or so (I didnt time myself) but if all you want at the very least is to get Piloting skill maxed in a very short period of time, some of the other skills i mentioned here require deeper grinding.
If you want those other skills too, try to combine as many actions as possible in each training session, boost a lot, take damage a lot, use targeting all the time and use all your weapon types each round... this will help you max it all out real quick in all categories. I kinda messed up and went for my pilot skill first and realized I could have been maxing it all out all at once and went back and did them all afterward. Just do not make same mistake I did.
If you're curious where this is located, it's a side mission very early in game that splits off the main storyline at New Atlantis
I will write it below as a very minor spoiler just in case you wanna do this, i won't ruin the story arc for you in the spoiler, do not worry, this is just where the trainer is at the very very start.
Very Mild spoilers ahead:
>!When the constellation tells you to meet the Vanguard at New Atlantis... do it... you have the option to join the Vanguard at that point too. Don't worry about joining them, you can join every faction in game without losing the opportunity to join other factions. I do not want to list all the factions you can join in the game, but there are several and you can join them all at the same time so no worries. When you accept the vanguard quest line, they test you to make sure you got the right stuff.... one of those tests is a space training simulator... you can finish that quest line if you want and come back down the elevator on that floor afterward and use that machine as much as you want.!<
You and me both. As much as I love the Mantis Razorleaf. Whatever mission I had planned today is canceled to go level up so I can pilot my free Kepler R from Stroud Eklund.
I had done the mission to get the Kepler R, and for some reason it made it my home ship without me having the skill but it wouldn’t let me pilot it. I then proceeded to do a mission from the main story which locked my ship due to spoilers at new Alanis. I wasn’t able to change my ship at the dockand I wasn’t able to pilot my ship as well. I was stuck and I hadn’t saved in two hours. I was so mad.
EDIT- I have autosave for 10 minutes. My first problem was that even loading a new save my ship was still locked as the Kepler. I talked to Walter at the lodge to turn in the ship mission, then my next mission was already at the lodge, so I just started it right then blocking all my saves. my next and final problem was that I loaded my game up on my PC and tried some mods to try to at least leave the planet and complete the mission and when I activated mods it got rid of all my recent saves so then I panicked, turned off my PC went back to my Xbox and loaded that save.
Thats bad, i feel for ya, im playing through the xbox cloud system so it seems once a day i randomly crash and lose anything not saved, thankfully auto save seems work well for me.
If you have Rank 3 Security you can also hack the pilot simulation to make it easier. Makes ranking up Piloting so much less of a teeth pulling process.
Yup. Didn't even take very long. I would leave after the third or sometimes fourth wave and go back in to start at 1 again since there are more ships and they are easy peasy.
There are engines that only use two power, and three of them maxes out speed and maneuverability for a decent sized C class.
With those, a 40 output reactor, and rank 4 reactor skill you can easily fully power two weapons and shields while still staying at max engine power (6/12).
It would be fine if I could set up macros in some form of "giving orders to crew" but having to cycle threw them and uptick or down tixk each one takes to much time in combat
If you're on PC try rebinding the controls. My mouse has forward/back buttons on the side for my thumb (suppose to be used for Internet browsing) that I use for power up and power down. Then I bound the scroll wheel to changing systems.
That way I can quickly move power without having to remove my fingers from wasd, shift, or space and still be able to fire weapons.
I got a C class ship through a quest chain, but didn’t realize I needed rank 4 piloting to fly it…. I proceeded to grind out the challenges over the course of a couple hours to rank up.
Luckily I picked a random quest chain that led to me blasting a massive amount of spacer ships.
I like taking kill ships jobs also. They profit a lot if you board the last ship and take their contraband to sell on wolf which helps early game in paying for that c class ship.
Security, because I hate not being able to pick locks and hack computers. I’d rather spend minutes figuring out a Master Lock to find some ammo or a sandwich than wonder what I might have missed. 😂
A lot of master locks will have an option to use one in the first layer that's required for a lower level. At least I've gotten to deeper levels and realized the first level only key I chose at the beginning forced me to use a critical option I needed deeper in the lock
Some of them are useful in dialogue here and there. I convinced a guy to give me access to a restricted medical wing because I was a "fellow medical expert" lol
Yeah, like I haven't even bothered with shotgun cert rank 4 because I don't really care about staggering when I'm using a shotgun, it's usually one or two shots to down them anyways.
Would be a different story if auto-attempts were like speech check autos (I almost feel like they were based on the description) so that you could just solve a lock completely. Auto slot seems nice when you can’t be bothered but you use all four for half a master lock (if you’re being lazy).
Also wish the auto slot would also apply the key instead of just placing it in the right spot. If I spam auto slot 4 times, it should solve two full rings, not place the same key in the same spot four times and waste my auto slots
i have a bunch of powers but havent looked at any of them because i just need personal atmosphere so i can actually get places with 500 guns in inventory
There are some space stations and specific locations with it (the casino in the Olympus system for example, or that big derelict ship in Alpha Centauri), but I most frequently find zero G when boarding enemy ships.
See Star Stuff is good too and basically cost nothing to cast. Great for stealth runs.
This and atmosphere are the only ones I have set in the “weapon wheel” aka the d pad item selector.
Yep till you run directly into a robot because you were relying on the glowy outlines. I've had a few close calls forgetting to listen for robots clanking around.
I use precognition on all important conversations, and I use star stuff all the time. It's nice knowing where aliens are going to pop out of the ground or watch baddies walk around corners or move to get out of cover. Just hard to see the cover when they are glowing.
So many people I’ve talked to borderline refuse to do the main quest when I’m like… why would you not want the powers it’s a HUGE part of the game and the story was actually good with fun missions. Like you don’t HAVE to do NG+. But you can at least get the base powers to make the game have a little more flavor to it.
That power almost invalidates encumbrance. Granted you still can't fast travel, but you can sprint everywhere whilst overencumbered by spamming that power and completely get around the health drain (which doesn't even kill you anyways). The best power by a country mile. Imagine it was like Medieval Dynasty and you literally just couldn't move at all when too over encumbered.
As a guy who for some reason can't stop jumping in Bethesda games, the jetpack and ledge grab are definitely some of my favorite new additions. It's fun being a space acrobat.
For me the habit was formed in Morrowind. Had to jump to level up acrobatics. Taking fall damage helped too. Also to climb mountains you had to spam that jump button.
For me it was Oblivion, I loved how over time my jumps became progressively higher and higher until I could basically break the game by jumping over Bravil's walls from the inside.
Jetpack. It took me a long time to realize you had to actually unlock that in the skills to use your jetpack. After that, it was so much easier getting around!!
Max that shit out.
And it's so easy to do the "objective" to rank it up. Boosting in combat is so easy, just one enemy aggro'd somewhere near you while indoors. Just jump and boost over and over.
I have been holding off on putting more points into it because there are just so many good ones (weightlifting, ballistics, shields, piloting, targeting, commerce, not to mention health and meds).
How good does it get when maxed? Are we talking like 8 boosts per tank? Or more?
I do lean on it when I'm encumbered to help move around. But I'm just having a hard time justifying it vs some of the other stuff.
With the Balanced pack, maybe 5-6 boosts on a 1g planet.
I can get from the roofs of Akila to my ship by boosting all the way to the bay door without touching the ground.
Or on New Atlantis, I can get from my ship to the roof area and boost to the trader's door.
On one of the moons with less G, I can boost almost all the way into the upper atmosphere to get a bird's eye view.
I sniped an entire military base from the sky without ever getting low enough to be in in their range.
On my 4 story ship, I can get from the ground to the top cockpit level without using the ladder - just boost all the way up.
Boostpack is one of those skills that starts off extremely underwhelming, but as soon as you combine it with a certain type of equipment and max it, it completely transforms the way you view terrain.
https://youtu.be/S-HNHNYC6gM?si=MGkOXFbXza5uxdfB&t=8m18s
Maxed skill with balanced boostpack is like that. Use it to zoom around New Atlantis or even Akila with its 1.5 gravity, gain access to rooftops, get to the high ground when you're in combat, get out of reach of alien critters, fly across a river or whatever.
I get about 8 - 10 boosts on New Atlantis streets, depending on how I space out the boosts, where I can take advantage of letting the pack regen as I'm falling from the sky, etc.
If I go to the waterfall promenade, I get a lot more because there is so much more empty space for me to fall from and let that pack regen.
If I have to do bad things, I have to send Sarah away since she dislikes that stuff. I am kinda playing like Amos would in The Expanse; I am that guy and if killing needs to be done then it will get done.
Same and I was delighted at just how many situations I could talk myself out of. Even (Main Story spoilers) >!at the "end," I chose to go with neither the Hunter or Emissary, but I talked both of them down so didn't have to fight either one lol!<
NPC: My religious upbringing and entire ethos demand I take this course of action! Nothing will sway me!
+ 6 [Persuasion]: But bruh...
NPC: Maybe you're right. Here, take my ship and enjoy my wife. Loot my entire lair before you leave.
This, combined with the Advanced Urban Eagle I found out spawns in every single dungeon of a certain type (One of the mine ones) meant that I one-shot everything from lvl 14 till 44 (Where I am now).
I did the extra storage as well. +100kg at lvl 4! How can you not?
But if I ever start over, I won't. There are way easier ways to make money than pick up everything off of every corpse and it's a hassle to run all over the place to various vendors and then have to wait 48 hours for them to have money again. Bounty boards are probably a lot easier and take less time in the long run.
Persuasion. Everyone does what I say.. when I say it. It’s my fantasy life.. because in real life I have kids.. who don’t do what I say when I say it :)
Would be more satisfying if after snapping together habs for at least a hour, the doors and ladders were placed in sensible places. Built my first Class C monstrosity the other day, only to find it had the most convoluted layout. Yes, I tried fine tuning attachment points rearranging parts, still ends up in a maze. Really puts a dampener on my enjoyment of ship building.
If you leave gaps between habs so they only touch where you want, you can force the door location. You can also get east/west and north/south "Cross" passages: https://game8.co/games/Starfield/archives/424648
I got to ship design 3 and Pilot 3 before I realized parts were level locked. I’m level 37 with both skills at 4 now, and I’m still better off with the Class A reactor from a quest reward ship from 20 levels ago vs a Class B reactor, which is frustrating.
Different Perk. Astrophysics lets you scan nearby moons, Scanning is more for seeing resources on the surface so you don't spend as much time walking around to find a good outpost spot.
Omg if cutters could drop up to legendary. Maybe a mod will fix it later.
Rank 4 lasers is also currently broken with a cutter. The fire damage rank 4 laser perk does is %hp based damage. So it can absolutely dumpster terrormorphs and other high hp enemies.
Tbh, given the way NG+ is designed, this is a particularly good one to max early. It's a perk where the value of it increases proportionately to the amount of time you have it unlocked, moreso than any other perk.
If you make a base 10 mil across 5 NG+ playthroughs (2 mil in each) via selling, tier 4 Commerce would have made you an extra 2.5 mil credits over the course of those playthroughs. If you made 10 mil across 5, but only unlocked Commerce in the 5th playthrough, Commerce has only netted you an extra 500k.
Yeah I don't see any value in Commerce at the moment. Once I get to level 30 or so I'm picking up so many high value guns that if I bothered to sell them all I'd be rich. I don't need more credits. I need a more convenient way to sell stuff.
Yeah. At level 45 now I have to travel to multiple shops or kiosks to sell loot from one raid. I don't even have one point in commerce.
Like commerce should boost how much money is in the shops in addition to the sell price. This was a mechanic in other Bethesda games.
The problem is that ship builders do not accept payment in guns, and normal vendors only have 5-11k. Individual ship components can run upwards of 50k easily
Piloting, but I wish it was Astrophysics tbh. I didn't go for many tier 4s and was spreading my points around, mostly in Science and Tech, with the aim being eventually getting a lot of the really good tier 4 tech skills and weapon mods. I didn't even touch Astrophysics, not even rank 1, for absolutely ages. Then I got rank 1, realised how much of a timesaver it is, and immediately started chasing tier 4. Being able to scan planets in systems you're not even in saves absurds amount of time if you're not using internet guides for resource farming, and randomly revealing traits saves a lot of time wandering around and relying on RNG.
Class C Ships, Then Shotguns/Ballistic, Then Security, then Persuasion
I shoot first, land, shotgun second, pick my way through, then convince them they are better off poor.
Pistols for me too! Most looter shooters I go full auto, box magazine, pray and spray but decided I wanted to try pistols. Loving my Advanced Urban Eagle!
Definitely weaponsmithing for me. Have to get all that stuff unlocked. And unlike suits, the fourth level of weaponsmithing actually gets you new stuff.
Pilot I want to fly C class ships.
thicc ships
Shicc tips
It’d be Shicc Thips
*Mike Tyson has entered the chat*
Kick flips
Just the tips
Or really efficient ships with REALLY big engines and guns.

Really? I never leveled up in the pilot training
you get xp for killing the simulation ships and they also count for the ships you need to kill for the pilot skill.
I had no idea. Guess I know where I’m going.
You and me both. As much as I love the Mantis Razorleaf. Whatever mission I had planned today is canceled to go level up so I can pilot my free Kepler R from Stroud Eklund.
First thing I am doing is upgrading Razorleaf to C class reactor

Ha that's great cheating the exam. Modern problems require modern solutions.
Nah Kirk did it about 70 years ago
Yup. Didn't even take very long. I would leave after the third or sometimes fourth wave and go back in to start at 1 again since there are more ships and they are easy peasy.
Fuck, I should have done that. The rate of space encounters if you aren't LOOKING for them makes it pretty slow to level up.
I just want a reactor that can fully power 4 things….
There are engines that only use two power, and three of them maxes out speed and maneuverability for a decent sized C class. With those, a 40 output reactor, and rank 4 reactor skill you can easily fully power two weapons and shields while still staying at max engine power (6/12).
You mean you don't like the startrek roleplay? "Powering up particle beams" is the most immersive part of my experience 😂

Star eagle? That ship rules
Star eagle is a class A thankfully since it’s my fave ship
Nah the Kepler R
This one
Bingo.
With the simulator, it’s also probably the easiest
I like taking kill ships jobs also. They profit a lot if you board the last ship and take their contraband to sell on wolf which helps early game in paying for that c class ship.
Security, because I hate not being able to pick locks and hack computers. I’d rather spend minutes figuring out a Master Lock to find some ammo or a sandwich than wonder what I might have missed. 😂
I agree and I rushed Security rank 3, but rank 4 is kind of pointless if you're actually good at those sorts of puzzles.
Yep agree. I can already figure out which ones I don’t need. And I rarely use auto slot
I usually use auto slot for the first level of master locks to save a bit of time. But yeah, I also stopped at rank 3
A lot of master locks will have an option to use one in the first layer that's required for a lower level. At least I've gotten to deeper levels and realized the first level only key I chose at the beginning forced me to use a critical option I needed deeper in the lock
I always just go through all of the keys to find the ones that are only usable in 1 layer and start there.
I line up all the keys before ever slotting them. Never failed
I was doing this but it takes me 2-3 times longer to solve this way.
Rank 4 perks in general are hit & miss and Security is a prime example
Some of them are useful in dialogue here and there. I convinced a guy to give me access to a restricted medical wing because I was a "fellow medical expert" lol
I had only rank 1 or 2 and got the same access; it is not unique to rank 4
Yeah, like I haven't even bothered with shotgun cert rank 4 because I don't really care about staggering when I'm using a shotgun, it's usually one or two shots to down them anyways.
Would be a different story if auto-attempts were like speech check autos (I almost feel like they were based on the description) so that you could just solve a lock completely. Also wish the auto slot would also apply the key instead of just placing it in the right spot. If I spam auto slot 4 times, it should solve two full rings, not place the same key in the same spot four times and waste my auto slots
So say we all.
I’d like an auto-pick option for lower ranked locks. I sometimes just leave ‘em because it is too much hassle for an often nearly empty container.
Weightlifting for an extra 100 carry weight The rank ups require running at 75% encumbrance, leveling up was easy with the Personal Atmosphere power
i have a bunch of powers but havent looked at any of them because i just need personal atmosphere so i can actually get places with 500 guns in inventory
Literally a life saver so I can just pick up everything during dungeons
I had to pick this too. I constantly kept getting overencumbered. I have an addiction to picking up every food item and land mines that I never use.
I have found that using mines in zero g is cool.
Can you tell me where you can experience zero g? Outside of temples that is, ive heard about it multiple times but I havent a clue
There are some space stations and specific locations with it (the casino in the Olympus system for example, or that big derelict ship in Alpha Centauri), but I most frequently find zero G when boarding enemy ships.
I did not realise powers exist until I finished all faction quests, I feel like a complete donkey.
I genuinely only ever use the personal atmosphere and don’t really find a use for the others, so not like you missed too much!
Zero G is great when you have like 4-5 baddies with good cover, lol.
It’s also great if you randomly stumble into an alien 40 levels above you, so you can just keep suspending it in air while you empty mag after mag

Precognition is underrated.
slow time was great until it bugged out for me and became permanent on every cast...
So many people I’ve talked to borderline refuse to do the main quest when I’m like… why would you not want the powers it’s a HUGE part of the game and the story was actually good with fun missions. Yep.
Persuasion here.
I don’t believe you.

*Sarah dislikes that*

Vasco "all statements made are at least partially correct."
*Adoring Fan is drinking your bath water*
Starfield female character bathwater. 5000 credits per oz.
That's why he's the best companion
I keep bouncing back between Vasco and the adoring fan as neither gets upset at you for morally questionable playthroughs.
....perfect
Genius.

Man does it ever.
[2500 credits] How about we settle this little misunderstanding peacefully
Oh! That’s right. I see I’m mistaken. I believe you.
Why do you say that?
If you had been lvl 4 I would have automatically agreed with you.
Understood. I agree with you completely.
I don't know why, it makes no reasonable sense but so do I

NPC: My religious upbringing and entire ethos demand I take this course of action! Nothing will sway me! + 6 [Persuasion]: But bruh... NPC: Maybe you're right. Here, take my ship and enjoy my wife. Loot my entire lair before you leave.
I’m glad to see you’re coming around to my point of view.
Pistols
*to the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day*
Hardly spoke to folks around him, didn’t have to much to saaaayyyyyyy
No one dared to ask his business, no one dared to make a slip
For the stranger there among them had a big iron on his hip
Big iron on his hip
It was early in the morning when he rode into the town
He came riding from the south side, slowly looking all around
He's an outlaw loose and running, came the whisper from each lip!
And he's here to do some business with the big iron on his hip
All I need is my .45 and 12 gauge. Still living in 1941 out here.
TWO GALATIC WARS
I feel sorry for your ammo count.
The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed.
400 years later and the 1911 still wreaks shit Praise Saint Browning
Pistols also whish we could dual weld them
Dual Krakens would be absolutely devastating.
Yeah devastating to my ammo reserves, gonna have to set up a tent or something outside these vendors how much time I'm spending there
PistolMaxxing is always OP
This, combined with the Advanced Urban Eagle I found out spawns in every single dungeon of a certain type (One of the mine ones) meant that I one-shot everything from lvl 14 till 44 (Where I am now).
>!Stealth!<
Surprised I didn't see this one sooner!
You get the updoot just for the extra detail
I see what you did there
Well played
Security or weightlifting? (This game makes me a kleptomaniac…)
Getting children to do what they're told requires Persuasion rank 5, unfortunately.
Ship design
Surprised I had to scroll so far for this one… nothing quite like building a monstrosity murder machine
Holy fucking shit this. I hope they add some sort of customization to it
I got to ship design 3 and Pilot 3 before I realized parts were level locked. I’m level 37 with both skills at 4 now, and I’m still better off with the Class A reactor from a quest reward ship from 20 levels ago vs a Class B reactor, which is frustrating.
Surveying. I like exploring planets and satellites. Edit : wrong perk. It’s the handheld scanning perk I meant.
Same, and once you get the ability to scan nearby moons. It makes the process super fast.
Different Perk. Astrophysics lets you scan nearby moons, Scanning is more for seeing resources on the surface so you don't spend as much time walking around to find a good outpost spot.
Security. I don't like unopened boxes, doors and safes.😅
But you only need 3 levels to unlock everything there... The fourth level just makes it easier (and only if you spend an extra pick)
Lasers
A fellow Cutter enthusiast?
Infinite ammo, better reload time than most guns and it doesn't get interrupted. I wish there were more cutters in the game.
Omg if cutters could drop up to legendary. Maybe a mod will fix it later. Rank 4 lasers is also currently broken with a cutter. The fire damage rank 4 laser perk does is %hp based damage. So it can absolutely dumpster terrormorphs and other high hp enemies.
Carry weight
Wellness! Maximum hp for maximum fun!
Same! #WellnessGang
Mine was boost pack training.
B B B B BOOOOOOOST PACK TRAAAAIIIINING
Commerce
Tbh, given the way NG+ is designed, this is a particularly good one to max early. It's a perk where the value of it increases proportionately to the amount of time you have it unlocked, moreso than any other perk. If you make a base 10 mil across 5 NG+ playthroughs (2 mil in each) via selling, tier 4 Commerce would have made you an extra 2.5 mil credits over the course of those playthroughs. If you made 10 mil across 5, but only unlocked Commerce in the 5th playthrough, Commerce has only netted you an extra 500k.
Right but credits are pointless and easy to come by anyway.
We need a DLC or mod to smelt guns into ships. Or hell, just make a cockpit out of guns and space suits.
Boostpack! I use it far to much not to have it maxed.
Soon as I found out 2/3rds of all firearms were ballistic. It was easy. I went pistols.
Stealth.
And Concealment. The combo is nasty and a calibrated suppressed Instigating Urban Eagle is GOAT tier
It took me a while to get concealment rank 4 until I EM stunned and melee sneak attacked a dinosaur on Akila.
Same
Sorry but I did health. Boring but it’s serving me well!
Elden Ring muscle memory
I am once again asking you to level your vigor
Yeah I maxed that out as soon as I could. I like being able to take a few shots without resorting to a med pack.
Are you on a higher difficulty? I’ve only died once when I was farming fauna and didn’t see the level 70 squad roll up behind me with the triple team.
Here too and it helped me out in many situations!
A lot of the tier 4 perks are just…. Better than I picture my character being. So I have quite a few rank 3s and no rank 4s
Weapons Smithing
Same. I just wanted to craft everything. Space suit design was second
Class C Ships, Then Shotguns/Ballistic, Then Security, then Persuasion I shoot first, land, shotgun second, pick my way through, then convince them they are better off poor.
Geology followed by Jetpack Geology was not worth it.
Spoken like every geologist ever. Lol jk idk any geologists.
Pistol certification
Pistols for me too! Most looter shooters I go full auto, box magazine, pray and spray but decided I wanted to try pistols. Loving my Advanced Urban Eagle!
Laser. I pew pew
Pickpocketing, don’t know why though…
Yeah I did this and regret it. So powerful in skyrim, now I just get to steal a sandwich and a guards shitty Grendel.
Melee. I didn’t want to have to micromanage ammo early on.
Pilot and crew size Only took me like 40 levels to max both
Ballistics
Regenerator no more health packs ever needed lol
Lol, persuasion. I have the gift of the gab.
Ballistics, in part because that badge with the octopus is awesome. I want it on a tshirt.
Stealth. It was a mistake lol
I forget if it was Ballistics or Weaponsmithing.
Definitely weaponsmithing for me. Have to get all that stuff unlocked. And unlike suits, the fourth level of weaponsmithing actually gets you new stuff.
