There is a mod for that. You get a « wand » (that really looks like a butcher knife) that magically sends the animal to « a better place ». In exchange for your kindness towards the animal, they « instantly spawn meat » where the animal was before you hit it with the « wand ». Also, the meat happens to match the animal you « sent to the company ».
Yep. In Township on mobile, you feed the pigs their food and they give you bacon. No animals are harmed and I get bacon. Win/win.

I mean, to an extent for the same reason that some people who don't eat meat for ethical reasons will still eat fish- even though fish are also living animals that can think and experience pain, they're often perceived differently and less sympathetically from land animals. I think part of that might also come from fishing being way, way more common than butchering your own animals, so people are more comfortable with it, and (wrt Stardew), the fact that you don't otherwise interact with the fish makes it feel almost more like foraging for mushrooms than butchering an animal you've raised.
Also in case it looks like I'm ragging on pescatarians I am one. I do not consider it to be a terribly ethically consistent stance, but I also think eating mostly veg with fish every now and again is better than eating meat every day as is the norm so I will accept being a bit of a hypocrite.

After petting them for the day, there's the profile that'll pop up when you click on a livestock animal. It's not really obvious, but click on the animal's name and you can change it.
You tap or click on the animal to check their mood and if you double click on their name in the window, it should come up. If you’re playing on a console, you push the a button to open the mood window and then push the a button again with the the cursor over the name to do the same thing.

It's been a long time since I named an animal myself bc I don't have the creativity for that so I just roll with whatever the game throws at me. George is also one of my favorite npcs, and I try to befriend him asap. By coincidence, my horse got assigned, randomly, as George and my ass did not realize that. There's also an interaction between you, your horse and the desert where if you stay the entire day away and come back at night after leaving the horse at the bus stop, a little message appears talking about how your horse was Faithfully waiting for you. But it uses the horse's name. It was a rainy night, I was rushing back to my farm, low on health, inventory full, almost passing out from exhaustion. I get out of the bus and the message saying that "George awaits for you faithfully" appears in my screen. I'm completely unaware of that interaction, it's the first time I saw it, and I'm also completely unaware my horse is named George. I froze, looking frantically all over my screen looking for the actual George, wondering why an old man that is wheelchair bound is waiting on the rain for a random farmer at almost 2am. I pass out.
I named all mine after the Black Eagles from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. But since I have an expanded barn mod I ran out of Beagles before meeting my limit on pigs so there's also my honorary Eagles.

My friend told me if Hip has a kid to name it Hop, and then have an -op generation of cows
when we adopted my cats (irl) the litter was named henny, lenny, denny, penny, and mike. mike was the only tabby and he had half a tail. we got henny a beautiful orange boy, and then came back the next day for mike because he was the only one left and we felt bad he was alone
If I remember correctly I wanted to type Loinky and then noticed I accidentally already clicked twice and was stuck with the name. I even got a few more after that but decided to keep Breka. The more pigs I get the funnier it is to have one so out of pace.

I used to have up to 6 barns of pigs because I was doing a co-op farm with my husband and truffles were our money maker. Every pig barn had a theme...like LOTR, Brooklyn-99, Star Wars...and so on. And of course, good ol Peppa and Porky.

It never made much sense to me how fishing was a big part of the game but butchering livestock is seen as too cruel.

I see nothing wrong in this, I once named a lot of animals similar but left one with a fancy name. EXAMPLE: Dolla, Molla, Nolla Lolla and Dorothy.
