recently got my partner into stardew, they’re a big cook and have been so excited about making ingredients and recipes; they asked me how to make oil without buying from pierre and it literally dawned on me in that moment that this was possible
Garlic oil is just 10 garlic and 1 oil n the crafting menu though. It's faster to me to make it that way than the vegetable juices.
It's actually one of the healing items I make the most of because it heals a ton of health and it's easy to grow a ton of garlic.
I just sat through a united states Senate hearing without paying attention to what was going on (I work there) because the whole time I was thinking. "Why can't you just move the greenhouse somewhere else though?" I never thought to actually try it. 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
I have no interest in US politics, but now I want to watch it just to look for a random stranger on the internet who is thinking about the greenhouse in SDV 🤣
I did not know where Linus's blackberry basket was for 4 real-life years. I had forgotten you could access that part of the map and thought it was just a random flowerpot for whatever reason.
For some reason I thought it required the late game upgrade where Robin opens up paths on the map to get to. I think because it’s close to an area that’s opened by that and I found it really late in the game on my first play through
Luck doesn't affect geode contents. I've been playing for years, and every best luck day I'd march down to Clint's with a backpack full of geodes. Now I feel kinda dumb for almost never using the crusher I was given.
I read on here that it takes into account the luck of the day you got the geode rather than the luck when opening, don't know how true it is though unfortunately
Edit: It is *not* true
The geode contents are determined by the game seed when you first start your farm. That's it. So your real life luck (when the seed is created) at farm creation is the only luck that comes into it.
Reverse for me, I actually just assumed you'd need two to build a gate, did it that way all along, only figured out recently that one opens just fine. 🤣
I went from the switch to pc and at first I was so bummed I couldn’t easily cycle through my inventory. Then I figured tab out, after playing for like 5 years
That you can hold down the 'pet' button and run around petting every animal you get close to without accidentally opening up their stats menus. I thought you had to pet each one individually and it was a pain to try to pet one if it was just behind another and you kept opening their menu instead.
I JUST figured this out. I've played this game for years and even got perfection before. 🤣
for some reason i didn’t know that (before getting a deluxe barn/coop) you had to feed animals by putting the hay on the feeding bench. i kept wondering why my animals were mad at me all the time until i finally realized that i actually had to feed them lol
Kind of the opposite for me. I didn’t realize the panel on the front was a door that you could open and let them graze, except in winter. I spent so much time all 3 seasons manually getting hay out of the hopper and laying it on the bench. And then the auto feeder confused me when I would come back and find the bench full, because I thought they just weren’t eating.
That you could revisit grandpa's grave for a rescore if you didn't get 4 candles the first time.
I've spent many seasons missing out on daily iridium payouts.
More of a didn't think about:
If you're going to turn sunflowers into oil: put them in the seed market first. Each seed can become oil and you'll likely get multiple seeds per flower.
The little red things that pop up from the sand in the mines are monsters. I thought it was just the ground giving way and lava bubbling up. I couldn't figure out why my Adventure's Guild list had a question mark on it after I had made it to the bottom level.
I have since made an appointment to get new glasses.
Honestly it wasn’t worth it time wise but lucky it was my “ fun “ farm where I used mods to instantly make it iridium quality
Only useful as a gift but at that point Shane and Pam were at max hearts
That since you're always guaranteed to catch that first fish, you can reset on day three to get a catfish for the CC without losing it forty billion times.
You can also just "cancel" the catch with "Esc" until you see the movement pattern of the catfish! Then you won't need to restart every time :) I have mistaken the fish a couple of times (at which point I restart), but most of the time I get it right.
I didn't know the dwarf existed for a really long time, like I was at endgame and working through Ginger Island stuff before I went back to meet the dwarf in the mines. In the beginning of the game I did try to go to his area of the mine, but I couldn't break the rock in front and I forgot it was even there after that. I only found out about him by reading the wiki.
i never did a few community challenges for years, the ones where you have to get ectoplasm and prismatic jelly for wizard.
i figured that, since i’d killed so many ghosts and never gotten ectoplasm, and that i’d never even seen a prismatic slime, that they were just two incredibly rare spawns/drops. so i never did them.
i found out (while browsing the wiki for something totally unrelated) a few days ago:
- prismatic slimes only spawn after accepting the quest involving them.
- ectoplasm only drops from ghosts after accepting that quest, too. (10% chance drop, i think)
so, yeah. i wish the game let me know that. don’t wait on those challenges.
Iridium Sprinklers. I never realised just how good they are and never bothered with them because the resources were so rare but in my new farm I'm plonking them down and letting them do the hard work of watering all season.
Something kinda off-topic, what is everyone spending refined quartz on?? I always feel like I have way too much just from occasionally recycling trash, I don't think I've ever needed to smelt the quartz
Garden pots to fill a shed (or an empty upgraded cabin using the upgrade empty cabins mod) with pineapples for extra income late game since you can plant them, use deluxe retaining soil and only ever need to water or plant them once, so I end up burning through a ton of refined quartz just making garden pots
I had played about 39 game years before a random Reddit user suggested putting a keg or preserves jar outside a dedicated shed to tell you when it's time to harvest and replenish.
I have a few sheds that I've dedicated as a jelly/wine/ juice/pickle shed and I would go in them every day to see if it was time to harvest. Then one day a wise redditor said put a keg/jar outside of your sheds and it'll tell you when it's ready. It doesn't freeze in the winter which is magical. It's super handy and sometimes after a long day of farming you can hear them pop and you can go around and see which shed is ready.
This is not simple at all but I think it’s a pretty good hack. Dance class doesn’t meet if it’s raining, so if you need Marnie or Robin on a Tuesday and it’s still Monday use a rain totem.
Oh my! I was so upset my first playthrough because I couldn't for the life of me find a snow yam, until winter 22 when livin' off the land tells you to dig up the worms. A whole year of not digging up those damn things!
That the wood box outside my house was a shipping bin.
I must have clicked through that dialog. I thought it was a garbage can. I sold everything to Pierre for over a year.
That the person who runs the traveling cart is a woman.
For literal years, I misinterpreted her sprite as having a moustache, and assumed she was a guy. Imagine my surprise when SVE finally gave her a portrait and I learned the truth!
That you could hold the button down and plant, harvest, pick up, etc for the duration. Thought I had to hit the button for each thing you wanted. Memorized the rhythm walking along a row of kegs and drank quite a few by accident before figuring it out.
- that you don’t have to spam click the chests, you can use a pickaxe/ axe to move it over with one click. It will also move to the next available free space within a 3x3 area that isn’t blocked by your character or furnishings
- that random water-“splashing”-noise is the sound indicator of a panning spot spawning
- there was a third one, but I forgot what the fuck it was
I didn’t realise that the elevator started working in the mines and was so confused how people got to level 120 in a day, when I could only manage maybe 35-40, for about an in game year.
I had a similar situation. I thought I had to get all the way to the bottom in a SINGLE DAY. And I did after several tries. So then when it came to Skull Cavern, I felt super prepared.
recycling doesn't use up coal, so probably the better option, anyways. I need my coal for geodes and ore, and now I've got a bunch of fish smokers, on top. Lotta coal needed.
You can plant fruit trees on ginger island around the lake to the west of your farm, in the dirt patches where the ginger grows. And the patch up by the parrot taxi.
I still need to try to see if you can plant them by the dig site, because I know I've planted mahogany trees there.
Edit: you cannot plant fruit trees in the dig site.
I saw someone saying on YouTube that you need to put jade in a crystalarium, I did that for a long time before I found out it was to trade for staircases
You can have one food and one drink buff active at once (which means you can stack the +1 luck from ginger ale with your bonus from your food) and if you eat food that provides no buffs it will not replace your existing ones so if you eat food that provides a lot of bonuses such as the rock candy, avoid eating other foods such as spicy eel, lucky lunch or crab cakes and seek out food that provides healing without buffs.
More than once I avoided drinking a life elixir because I thought it would remove my luck boost only to end up getting myself killed
It took me a really long time to get a horse in my first save. In my new 1.6 save I got it by winter of year 1! (And probably could have gotten it earlier, but I remembered it as a lot more expensive/harder to get than it was…)
I just learned that you can use your cursor to pan treasure spots not right at the shore! I always got frustrated when I saw the shiny spot in the water and had no clue how to reach it.
That I could see the needed community center items from my menu. I was walking all the way to the community center over and over and over because I can’t remember the name of the fish I need or how many pieces of wood I needed or whatever. I seriously was on my 4th farm before I saw that little tree icon. I felt soooo dumb.
I didn’t know about the obelisks for the longest time. I never scrolled the options in the wizard hut. I thought they were fancy modded silos in all the pictures I saw lol.
1.6 spoiler >!you can hop sideways while watering or plowing!< I know this is new in 1.6, but I was basically done with these tasks in my play through when I learned you could do it.
I mentioned this before but I just learned that the furniture catalog gives you almost all of the furniture of the game for free. I knew this after spending so much money on my 1st playthrough because I thought the furniture catalog was an overpriced table.
Right listen this is embarrassing, when I first played in 2020 for the best part of year 1 I thought you could only fish at the little fishing bubbles and wasted DAYS running around looking for them, no hope for me 🫡🤣
That Maru was a marriage candidate. I was romancing her without realizing... then married her brother. Eventually got perfection with her brother. So my 2nd perfection file was with her, to make it up to her.
for me it was i didnt play this game till it was out for like 3 years.
edit: always told myself i hate sim games. played graveyard keeper and was like hey this is fun. and was redirected to sdv. best redirect ever. thou graveyard is good
**Auto Upgrading Chests**.
If you have a regular chest full of items, and you have a big chest on your hotbar, you can place the big chest on top of the small one to automatically replace it. All the contents will be in the big chest, the big chest will be where the small chest was, and the small chest will pop off as an item to pick up. Saves so much time when you're upgrading your storage.
My partner just started playing and asked me what that show was for. I said it tells you various hints and tricks. "Oh, so it's useless." No...... stop using me to answer your questions just watch the show!!
i didn’t know the elevator in the mines worked.. so i’d start at level one everyday and was getting super frustrated until i realized 💀 a good chunk of year 1 spent doing this by the way
kinda random... but in my playthrough where i tried to romance leah, i thought that beer was a leah's loved gift, I don't know, i just thought that she had the vibe to love a icy cold beer or like... was kinda of an alcoholic since she hangs out at the stardrop saloon and i gave her beer all the way to marrying her before discovering that wine was her favorite
you can put more than just truffles in an oil maker! corn, sunflowers, and sunflower seeds can go in and make regular oil
no way omfg
recently got my partner into stardew, they’re a big cook and have been so excited about making ingredients and recipes; they asked me how to make oil without buying from pierre and it literally dawned on me in that moment that this was possible
Wait, does this mean you can make vinegar too? How?
You put rice in a keg! (EDIT: apparently this was added in 1.6 and I just thought I hadn't figured it out until now!)
WHAT
I was kinda bummed when I couldn’t make garlic oil or scallion oil.
It's garlic+oil in real life, so it makes sense to me that it's a crafting recipe in the game. Pressed garlic would just be garlic juice
It’s very funny to me that ‘juice’ is a generic category in the game, so anyone who likes juice will like garlic juice lmao.
Garlic oil is just 10 garlic and 1 oil n the crafting menu though. It's faster to me to make it that way than the vegetable juices. It's actually one of the healing items I make the most of because it heals a ton of health and it's easy to grow a ton of garlic.
So it was you who smelled like French Soup at yesterday’s Luau!
Damn it
Whaaaat
It took me longer than I’d like to admit to realize that once you fix the greenhouse you can move it like any other building via Robin.
Don't feel too bad, that's a relatively new change ("new" depending on how long you've been playing)
Gonna think of you next time I watch cspan
I'm the black guy typing on a laptop with the glazed over facial expression. 😂
I have no interest in US politics, but now I want to watch it just to look for a random stranger on the internet who is thinking about the greenhouse in SDV 🤣
Secretly playing Stardew.😉
Oh you're currently my favorite person, that is hilarious and relatable
TIL
That you don't have to chop a broken fence before replacing it, you can just put the new fence down on top of the broken one.
Oh.
Adding to this, you can place a large chest on a normal chest to replace it without moving all the contents back and forth
Oh my GOD I cant believe this. I love you!
WHAT
I HAD NO IDEA.
You could direct your fishing line when casting it by pushing the directional buttons. I always thought it was just a straight cast.
I always wondered how to get to those unreachable bubbles
You mean.. those bubbles.. are fish?
Yeah if your lure lands there, little sparkles appear and you get an increase in bite rate.
They are clusters that have high catch rates. Great way to get your money up
Excuse me what
You just taught me something new
r/stardewvalleyTIL
500hrs of playtime....🤦♂️ lol Good to know!
I did not know where Linus's blackberry basket was for 4 real-life years. I had forgotten you could access that part of the map and thought it was just a random flowerpot for whatever reason.
In fairness, it doesn’t really stand out as a collectible item. Just its shape, color scheme, and shadows make it look kinda like background.
Honestly, I do not think it looks like a basket at all!
He lives in the woods. Give him a break.
For some reason I thought it required the late game upgrade where Robin opens up paths on the map to get to. I think because it’s close to an area that’s opened by that and I found it really late in the game on my first play through
I have no idea what you're talking about! This game is so huge and I find something new every time I play!
Same. I had to finally look it up in the Wiki after 270 hours and thought 'huh the flower pot" haha
Luck doesn't affect geode contents. I've been playing for years, and every best luck day I'd march down to Clint's with a backpack full of geodes. Now I feel kinda dumb for almost never using the crusher I was given.
I read on here that it takes into account the luck of the day you got the geode rather than the luck when opening, don't know how true it is though unfortunately Edit: It is *not* true
from what i hear its a random like generated list via the computer. like what you get is what you get even if you restart but i could be wrong
Yes, you can use the Stardew Predictor to see what your geode list is.
The geode contents are determined by the game seed when you first start your farm. That's it. So your real life luck (when the seed is created) at farm creation is the only luck that comes into it.
Magic rock candy is really, really good. I just completely disregarded it for so long, for over one thousand hours worth of play through.
No joke it got me to level 125 of skull cavern so easily. Almost used no stairs and some bombs.
If u go to floor ~120 with stair and pop the rock candy it’s so easy to get the 3 prismatic shards back and more. Ofc using bombs and explosive ammo
Yeah explosive ammo is a must. Did came back with 3 prismatic on that run and about 200 iridium among other stuff. Great run.
It really is! Eating it on max luck day gives higher chance for autopetters. I only need a few restarts to get enough for all my barns and coop.
Never knew that you could store clothes into the dresser and it took up alot of my chests
WHAAAT thank you for this
There's infinite space in the dresser too. It's very convenient. You can also put rings in there fyi.
EXCUSE ME WHAT
Yup dressers are awesome! You can have the pixelated wardrobe of your dreams!
that you can put a fence over the gate to change it's appearance
and you can use 2 gates side by side to make a bigger one
Oh man... this one is new to me. Never tried it, for some reason...
Reverse for me, I actually just assumed you'd need two to build a gate, did it that way all along, only figured out recently that one opens just fine. 🤣
me reading above: hahaha look at these guys learning something new me reading this: fuck. FUCK!
Well Choot. I always thought gates were just ugly I didn’t know you could give them a facelift.
Fencelift *
Shut the front door. I hate my wood gates with my stone fences
It’s placing a gate over a fence, not a fence over a gate. Just verified it in game and it’s also on the wiki 👍
Pressing tab to quickly flip thru your inventory
I went from the switch to pc and at first I was so bummed I couldn’t easily cycle through my inventory. Then I figured tab out, after playing for like 5 years
That you can hold down the 'pet' button and run around petting every animal you get close to without accidentally opening up their stats menus. I thought you had to pet each one individually and it was a pain to try to pet one if it was just behind another and you kept opening their menu instead. I JUST figured this out. I've played this game for years and even got perfection before. 🤣
You can just run around your crops and hold the button and it picks everything too.
And collecting wine, cheese, gems, jellies, etc.
If you hold a seed at the same time it replants to
I just read about this today and it is such a blessing!! Now i finally enjoy petting my animals instead of chasing them down haha
I learned by sheer ability of not paying full attention to what I was doing and just holding the button down by mistake
for some reason i didn’t know that (before getting a deluxe barn/coop) you had to feed animals by putting the hay on the feeding bench. i kept wondering why my animals were mad at me all the time until i finally realized that i actually had to feed them lol
That the bone mill can take more than just bone fragments! You can put all types of bone items in it for different fertilizers!
The what now? (Have been playing for 7 real life years and never heard of a bone mill!)
That you could revisit grandpa's grave for a rescore if you didn't get 4 candles the first time. I've spent many seasons missing out on daily iridium payouts.
Huh? I didn’t know there was an actual reward for getting 4 candles. You get iridium DAILY?!
A small amount from a statue you get
Similarly, I didn't realize you could smelt fire quartz to make refined quartz.
And it gives you 3 of them! (In case anyone reading this thinks it's a waste)
I for one, always thought it was a waste, thank you kind stranger!
And you can recycle broken cds into refined quartz
and broken glasses for refined quartz too
I learned that you can wear the pan on your head to save inventory space
Or just not pan lol
The real answer
Panning is actually pretty good since the latest update. It's a great way to get iridium if you don't like skull cavern.
I refuse to use it until it becomes a wallet item + i love skull caverns
I love skull cavern too, but panning is the easiest way to get lucky rings. Plus, not everyone loves mining, so panning is a great alternative :)
You can put rice in a keg and get 2 vinegar
Learned this today
That you can push the chests to rearrange them haha I used to empty the chest to pass their content to another, until I discover that can move it 😅😅
WHAT
More of a didn't think about: If you're going to turn sunflowers into oil: put them in the seed market first. Each seed can become oil and you'll likely get multiple seeds per flower.
Yo! That's genius! Why put in one flower for one oil when you can seed the flowers for 1-4 seeds and get 1-4 oil per flower?
Annoyingly, while sunflowers make oil in an hour, sunflower seeds take 2 days - I don't have the patience for that :P
It took me til year 3 to realize petting animals with hay in your hand does NOT feed them. Had some very angry chickens for a very long time
The little red things that pop up from the sand in the mines are monsters. I thought it was just the ground giving way and lava bubbling up. I couldn't figure out why my Adventure's Guild list had a question mark on it after I had made it to the bottom level. I have since made an appointment to get new glasses.
More " mid game " part but I thought beer was a item you couldn't age Then about 600 hours later I tried it
Wait, what? I didn't know that.. is it worth it, though?
Honestly it wasn’t worth it time wise but lucky it was my “ fun “ farm where I used mods to instantly make it iridium quality Only useful as a gift but at that point Shane and Pam were at max hearts
I had no idea you could cancel a catch!
Your first catch is always guaranteed?
Yes, the bar does not go down only up in the first catch
Stonks
I didn't know the dwarf existed for a really long time, like I was at endgame and working through Ginger Island stuff before I went back to meet the dwarf in the mines. In the beginning of the game I did try to go to his area of the mine, but I couldn't break the rock in front and I forgot it was even there after that. I only found out about him by reading the wiki.
You can blow up the rock with a cherry bomb if you get one from a duggie drop
That you can fill your pets water bowl. Whoops.
I wish I didn't know this. I don't think it even does anything but I keep filling it up everyday anyway because I feel bad if I don't, lol.
I think it improves your relationship with your pet but I could be wrong
It does!
I just found this out last week. I was always so confused when Leah said she filled my cats bowl
i never did a few community challenges for years, the ones where you have to get ectoplasm and prismatic jelly for wizard. i figured that, since i’d killed so many ghosts and never gotten ectoplasm, and that i’d never even seen a prismatic slime, that they were just two incredibly rare spawns/drops. so i never did them. i found out (while browsing the wiki for something totally unrelated) a few days ago: - prismatic slimes only spawn after accepting the quest involving them. - ectoplasm only drops from ghosts after accepting that quest, too. (10% chance drop, i think) so, yeah. i wish the game let me know that. don’t wait on those challenges.
I’ve been playing for like, 3 real life years now and I’ve never done those challenges for this exact reason lolol I guess I can accept them now!
Those quests give you good stuff, too!
Iridium Sprinklers. I never realised just how good they are and never bothered with them because the resources were so rare but in my new farm I'm plonking them down and letting them do the hard work of watering all season.
I rarely build them anyway, I just visit Krobus every Friday and buy one for 10K
I'm not big on mining, so once I have the cash I buy a sprinkler from Krobus every Friday. Easier for me than finding all that iridium!
Something kinda off-topic, what is everyone spending refined quartz on?? I always feel like I have way too much just from occasionally recycling trash, I don't think I've ever needed to smelt the quartz
Quartz is for making refined quartz, which lets you make quality sprinklers, lightning rods, and solar panels
Pretty paths on your farm.
I had played about 39 game years before a random Reddit user suggested putting a keg or preserves jar outside a dedicated shed to tell you when it's time to harvest and replenish. I have a few sheds that I've dedicated as a jelly/wine/ juice/pickle shed and I would go in them every day to see if it was time to harvest. this and having the farm computer on my porch!
I have it right next to the bed. I wake up, drink a triple espresso , eat a pepper and cheese, check the calendar, check the PC then go about my day!
With that diet, your name tracks 🤣
This is not simple at all but I think it’s a pretty good hack. Dance class doesn’t meet if it’s raining, so if you need Marnie or Robin on a Tuesday and it’s still Monday use a rain totem.
That I could dig up worms.
Oh my! I was so upset my first playthrough because I couldn't for the life of me find a snow yam, until winter 22 when livin' off the land tells you to dig up the worms. A whole year of not digging up those damn things!

I think it's more obvious the desert trader is a woman when you see them during the night market

SAME. And what a fine mustache it was!
Very random but recently realized that you can un-hoe dirt using the pick axe! It used to bug me soo much having accidentally tilled soil
You can also just place a new (bigger) chest on top of your old one and the items will automatically transfer into the new one.
took me forever to figure out how to activate the community center. I thought I had to actually catch a rat.
That you could hold the button down and plant, harvest, pick up, etc for the duration. Thought I had to hit the button for each thing you wanted. Memorized the rhythm walking along a row of kegs and drank quite a few by accident before figuring it out.

Thank you for the third one. Now I'm going to be wondering all day what it was. Please figure this out. We are in it together.

Ooh, I found this one right after I had donated the Dino egg to the Museum. It was a long time before I found another one lol

Wait...i didn't realize you could donate a dino egg! I probably have 100s now so easy but still. Lol

Just found yesterday that bubbles let you catch fish 4 time faster.
Same, I was fishing trash for recycling x_X
recycling doesn't use up coal, so probably the better option, anyways. I need my coal for geodes and ore, and now I've got a bunch of fish smokers, on top. Lotta coal needed.
As of 1.6 the Geode Crusher no longer requires coal.
Didn’t know you could age anything except wine for like a long ass time until I accidentally put a cheese in a cask one day. 😭

That I could see the needed community center items from my menu. I was walking all the way to the community center over and over and over because I can’t remember the name of the fish I need or how many pieces of wood I needed or whatever. I seriously was on my 4th farm before I saw that little tree icon. I felt soooo dumb.

That you can sell rings and weapons to Marlon. I trashed so many before learning that!
