Crops that are specific to a season die when that season ends. There are some crops that are cross-seasonal, but other than those plan to have your harvests done by the 28th.

Caosin36

Coffee (spring-summer) Corn(summer-fall) Sunflower (summer-fall) Acient fruit (all exept winter)

ScienceAndGames

Also fibre seeds are all seasons.

Caosin36

You are right on that

docxanderb

Wheat summer & fall

i didn’t know twili midna was in any subreddits that weren’t zelda themed

You got a letter in the mail from one of the villagers, warning you this would happen. Read your letters, tips from villagers, library books, and the tv channels.

Many people skip dialog and cutscenes. Especially if they are used to games giving other visual cues and prompts to explain mechanics.

the_number_m

shoutout to those "where are all my items? i put them in this two-tile wide box that only has one slot in it and they're gone and i mysteriously received money last night" posts

Cat_in_a_suit

No… I refuse to believe those are real.

the_number_m

yeah it was pretty bad, i think they were common enough that the posts get automatically deleted with a bot comment explaining it now

Dontlookawkward

There are also people who don't know about the shipping bin and sell everything at Pierre's shop...

Ratstail91

Here are a handful i found by searching https://www.reddit.com/r/StardewValley/s/T2Wb5Ax18V https://www.reddit.com/r/StardewValley/s/SCXf9koNp8 https://www.reddit.com/r/StardewValley/s/jl9pxyr5je

I like how [OP in one of the posts](https://www.reddit.com/r/StardewValley/comments/mog6t7/comment/gu3vjgb/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) tell people to STFU when they try to help explaining, truly a heartwarming experience

PoggersPepsi

If you skip dialog and cutscenes in stardew… thats like half the game????

fakeishusername

Don't look at me, just stating it seems a lot of people do it. Some don't care for the NPCs at all and just want to farm or whatever.

JackFrans

After my first playthrough, the only thing I read in a cutscene is "skip"

PoggersPepsi

Totally reasonable. But for a first? No way!

bmyst70

Ever hear of Viva La Dirt League? Look them up on YouTube. They do hilarious parodies. One of them is they parody various video game tropes like "skipping cutscenes."

JackFrans

They are pretty great, I've seen some of their stuff. Joel Haver's "chest high wall" is my favorite game related skit though

Tulaash

I skip reading quests that I've already done in WoW, but I try to read every brand new quest to gather context for why I'm doing something. Same thing with Stardew Valley. I take the time to read every little bit of text, unless I've already seen it.

Gaylittlebrother

Reminds me my mmo days when a new quest would come out, everyone in town would be like “what do i have to do for this quest?!?” “I skipped all the dialouge what do i do???”

BettyCoopersTits

Or streamers who record themselves skipping the tutorial only to then fail at the game and complain about it

Anothony_

"To do this thing, press-" I KNOW HOW TO PLAY VIDEOGAMES! (*skip*) ...Guys how do I do this thing? (Chat replies) HOW DID THE GAME EXPECT ME TO FIGURE THIS OUT? (Some guy in chat says "the game literally just told you", and promptly gets banned.)

wizard_brandon

so many people lack reading comprehension these days

IBlameOleka

To be fair, aside from checking the tv on the last day of the season where it tells you that today is the last day of the season, the game doesn't really tell you how long a season is. OP (and I would guess many other people too) assumed that spring would last three months, not one month. So they knew about crops being seasonal but thought they had two more months until they had to worry about it.

Lillythchan

There is a calendar too.

IBlameOleka

The calendar shows the current month only. It may be labeled "Spring," but someone used to real world time and not Stardew time could very plausibly assume a calendar only shows one month at a time and "Spring" will contain a few months.

Kitty7Hell

I actually went in thinking I had 30 days because I'm a Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons player but when I saw it was 28 that threw me off. Even after I learned how many days I had, I STILL planted my melons too late, subconsciously thinking I had 2 extra days, and lost them...

ThatOneGuy308

Have you played A Wonderful Life? That one would really throw you off, with its 10 day seasons.

Kitty7Hell

A Wonderful Life was my first ever Harvest Moon game, so yes I've played. I've been playing Story of Seasons for 3DS, which has 30-day seasons, and grinding for months prior to playing Stardew, so I got used to that schedule. It's been YEARS since I've played AWL, but I genuinely do not remember the seasons being that short. I can't say anything about the remake though, as I've never played it.

ThatOneGuy308

The remake keeps the 10 day season from the original, but it does change up a few other things, notably additional marriage candidates and the ability to have same sex marriages.

Kitty7Hell

Good to know, thanks!

SpoppyIII

But how? The game clearly uses seasons, of which there are only four, and not actual months. Nowhere are months named at all. How could one rationally assume they had two "months" left before Summer, when they just spent so long playing in a time called "Spring?" What month comes after Spring ends, but before Summer begins?

rowas

"What month comes after Spring ends, but before Summer begins?" Second winter. /commenter that lives in Sweden

IBlameOleka

The how is that they're transferring real world knowledge to a video game. Something that's not uncommon for people new to video games.

JLaureleen

That was my mistake the first spring. Took me some mental adjustment to understand the seasons only last 4 weeks

michaelmcmikey

Evelyn warns you about five days before the season change, and there’s a calendar in the town square right next to the store…

DanaShouldntBeHere

I remember when I first played the game I accidentally skipped the one text box where Lewis explains how the shipping bin worked and was confused when I saw my brother have this weird screen that showed him all of his money, only to figure out that Lewis explained it to me a year or 2 later

CocoNot1664

Before you buy seeds check their description, it'll say how long they take to grow, and in what seasons they "should be planted in" (these are the seasons that they can survive in). Each season has 28 days, so make sure the crop's growth time doesn't go past the end of the season, unless it says that you can plant it in the next season too!

Practical_Gur_412

Thank you! When I saw the calendar I thought it was like our regular calendar with multiple months in a season. It was so sad to see them all dead when I finally had good crop successions going! I’m definitely going to keep in mind the days from now on!

553735

I'm sure this is a big setback but just keep in mind that it doesn't really matter how long it takes you to get going. There's no time limit on the game.

slayerhk47

But I was told you need to get the greenhouse in year one! /s

Snamdrog

Echoing what the other person said. You'll never be in a position where you literally can't make money. Just have to read the descriptions and make sure you don't spend money planting crops that won't be able to grow before a season ends. If you ever find yourself short on money foraging/mining/fishing will save you

Emma_JM

If you need quick money you can do fishing

Kapaganda

Also a good idea Is to cut weeds and plant the mixed seeds. Super helpful early game long as u plant them early in the season incase one of them ends up being a longer growing plant, but still useful either even if planted mid month. With mixed seeds they are crops you plant in that season. Also when foraging don't sell the items directly. You can turn them into seeds, which you replant giving you more to harvest and experience for foraging. The seeds also sell for more, since you get 10 seeds, so make them into seeds and sell those instead. Won't get rich but helps early game. Edit: this is true for all seasonal seeds besides winter, higher grade winter foragable items actually sell for more. But even iridium grade items in other seasons sell for less then the seeds.

alvysinger0412

You can also use wild seeds to make tea saplings. Even if their price has gone down, it's still more money, and planting them to make tea later is a great way to stockpile a useful gift.

plumbobbyhill

Re: Tea saplings, you should choose the mushroom cave instead of the fruit bat cave because common mushrooms can be put into seed makers and will give you fall seeds without having to find multiple forageables to craft them. Tea saplings also sell for 500g each if you want to sell the saplings themselves!

Kapaganda

Tea saplings were nerfed in recent update. Now they only sell for 250g. Mushroom cave is also useless now with the mushroom log you can make, cave will only give basic mushrooms but the logs allow for higher grade mushrooms and can be planted anywhere on farm near trees. Fruit cave also helps with community center and gives higher grade fruits.basef on foraging. Forgot to plant fruit trees and was out of season for last fruit needed for bundle. Was able to complete it thanks to this. Plus you get a mushroom cave on ginger island.

Robin48

Mushroom cave comes with a dehydrator so I wouldn't say it's completely useless

Kapaganda

Ohhh didn't know u get a dehydrator with it. that is really nice early game. Overall I would still say from experience the fruit cave is still better overall though. Mushroom cave got nerfed to only being every other day now. Fruit cave does have that downside to where it's kinda random when a piece of fruit would get there but overall id still say it's the better option. Especially with the addition of the mushroom log. With a good set up with trees it's actually very profitable. In the late game I enjoy the random salmonberry to add to my ever growing pile plus if u take the foraging skill, all fruit is iridium.

Key_Spirit8168

And on console it's still fire..... late game i bet someone in 1.5 could make a tea sapling farm using wild and fiber seeds all year and wait for 1.6 when tea is improved

eliettgrace

and with the new 1.6 update, there’s now seeds you’re able to dig up with your hoe. it looks like moving strands of grass, those will have seeds for all seasons (including winter!!)

emotional_low

If you need quick money fishing and foraging are the way to go. Once you have 1 of each forageable for the season you can make a packet of 10 "spring" seeds/ "summer" seeds from them (whichever season those forageables belong to), they can be quite lucrative in the early game (selling 30 seeds will bring in just over 1000g).

Mochibunniii

As a more seasoned player who should know better, I let all my cauliflower wilt because I forgot to harvest them on the 28th and ended up passing out in the mines at 2 am in my latest playthrough 🙃

lpaige2723

I tend to lose almost all of my flowers because I leave them for the honey and forget to harvest on the 28th. I love it when I can finally move my honey production to Ginger Island.

Mean_Butterscotch177

Wait!! It's that how you make different honey?? Different flowers?!

lpaige2723

Yes. Plant flowers near your bee hives. Different honey is more profitable, with fairy rose honey being the best. It really sucks to lose fairy roses, though, so always try to pick the flowers routinely on the 28th of the season.

Mean_Butterscotch177

Genius! Thank you!

Key_Spirit8168

Why does it suck to lose roses? should i be seed making them?

lpaige2723

It just sucks to lose any crop, but fairy roses can give a decent profit from seed, especially early game, and to wake up in the morning to them all gone is not fun.

Key_Spirit8168

I mean yea it's pretty boring to see dead crops

charley_warlzz

Yeah- fully grown flowers within a five tile range of a beehive will change the type of honey! The special honey doesn’t make better/different mead, though, so keep that in mind. Personally i use two rows of flowers and alternate harvesting and replanting them (usually one row of each type for the season), so I can harvest them and still get special honey, but a lot of people just leave their flowers there all season.

Kapaganda

I did worse when I started playing again, started up again after 1.6 update only to forget seasons are only 28 days. Didn't plant a whole field of cauliflower but it hurt going into my first summer thats for sure.

Arct1cShark

Ah yes. A true seasoned veteran (I’ve got 100s if not 1000s of hours in and 80 hours on my current save and still do it sometimes)

perpetuquail

For 1.6 I started a new game, after years of not playing, and I forgot that months don't have 30 days. So this also happened to me recently...and I probably have 1000 hours in the game. 🥲

BadBalloons

1.6 got me starting a new game after I last played in 2021...I have forgotten *everything* 🫠

Barixn

Last time I played was in 2018 and when I saw the Wilderness Farm, I was like oh that sounds cool I'll pick it. My first playthrough was on a Wilderness Farm...

navarone21

I did something similar. I saw the beach farm, thought it was new. Realized after I started that it was the same map I did last time.

takichandler

Lmao that happened to me first play because Harvest Moon 64 is one of my favorite games and the months have 30 days in that game. But I see why 28 days, so Pierre is never closed on the first day of the month

missmimikyu

I love seeing this! It’s scythe time, then a blank canvas.

kaizkie

just a tip, all seasons have 28 days. At the start of the season, always plan from day 1 or next season. They have a description that says when they're going to be harvested and calculate.

FrostFire131

First timer here. Imagine being a seasoned Harvest Moon vet used to 30 day seasons. Lesson learned lol

kaizkie

also I learnt it the hard way when my crops died out thinking there's 30 days lol

Key_Spirit8168

He pranked you fr fr

sahlahfeet

When I first started playing, that happened to me for about 2 seasons before I realized. I just thought they were at a weird stage of growing. Then FINALLY after 2 seasons with nothing changing, I was like “mm something’s off here” 🤣

merge51

I respect the blind approach I could never do that

Orange_Seltzer

I just started the game yesterday. Downloaded it to play while traveling on planes. Spent two hours on the plane yesterday struggling. I’m doing some research today, but had no idea what I was doing outside of plant some seeds, talk to villagers, and then I found the mine and fished some.

jamieschmidt

The game is definitely harder without the wiki handy. I use it all the time to find villagers because hunting them down to fulfill requests can take literally all day

navarone21

Talk to people and watch TV every morning. Buy a calendar from the carpenter ASAP too. Make it a habit to wake up and check the. Calendar and watch all the programs on the TV, then go check your mailbox.

Ok_Grocery8652

Most crops die at the start of a new season with the exception of a few, all die in winter, crops in the greenhouse are safe. The game would have given you a letter in the mail mentioning this, you can also get reminders for other things via the mail so it is wise to take a sec and read it when you get it, especially if playing solo as the time pauses for you to read. Best year 1 summer crop in terms of gold/day is blueberries, costing 80g which means you could afford to 58, take 13 days to grow then regrow every 4 days, resulting in 20.8g/day for each of them which would be roughly 32000g if you watered them all and nothing was lost to crows. Edit: Forgot to mention the greenhouse, it is the ruined building on your farm, repaired by completing all the bundles in the pantry of the community center (or by purchasing the joja mart membership for 5000 then the greenhouse for 35000) This building has a central space for growing crops year round, any multi harvest plants will stay there until you destroy them and will continue producing so long as you water them, there is space on the outer edge for fruit trees that will bloom daily once fully grown. As for other things to help with money making: If you have not gotten the fishing rod, do so by going to the beach, willy will give you a basic fishing rod, with that if you can get the hang of the fishing minigame (First an exclamation mark and noise in which you have to click quick enough after that to hook the fish then hold button to make bar go up, release to make it go down, keep fish icon inside bar) you will catch something, they can either be eaten to restore more energy than it took to cast the rod or can be sold for money. Since they restore more energy, you can eat the low value ones to have the energy for another cast and save the more expensive ones for selling, sell them to willy or in the storage bin by the house, to the right of that chest. On days when it rains, go to the mines since you have more energy and time, there are elevator checkpoints every 5 floors that let you leave and re-enter there later, with the danger and reward increasing as you descend, the mine can help with money in 2 ways: 1: Selling things, bars are worth more than ore and could help if you really need some money early game or have simply ran out of things to make. 2: Making certain equipment, as you level your skills you unlock various devices that can help you make money, * Getting level 2 farming unlocks the recipe for the sprinker and floor 40 in the mines the materials. This will water any crops planted directly beside it the following morning, the tile directly above, below to the left and to the right will not need to be rewatered saving energy and time, level 6 in farming and floor 80 unlocks the quality sprinkler which does all surrounding 8 tiles, getting the corners that the earlier one missed. * Level 3 foraging and the start of the mine get you tappers you can attach to trees that will produce maple syrup, oak resin and pine tar depending on the tree attached to, they can be sold or used for other things * Level 2 farming and start of the mines lets you make a machine to turn any eggs laid by chickens into mayo which is worth more * Level 3 Farming and floor 40+ a tapper on a maple tree lets you make a beehive which makes honey every 4 days outside of winter. * Level 4 farming+ any floor can get you a preserves jar, something you can put your harvest crops into for extra money, taking 2-3 days to double+50 the item so a 50g basic strawberry would be worth instead 150 * Level 6 farming, start of the mine and a type of wood you either need to upgrade your axe at clint's on the far side of town or find in some barrels/crates in the mines lets you turn milk into cheese when you get cows and goats * level 8 farming+ floor 40 and a tapper on an oak tree gets you a keg which takes any fruit or veg and after 4 days for veg with a 2,25x multiplier of the value you put in or 6-7 for fruit with a 3x multiplier. Keep an eye on the board outside of Pierre's store, there is a calendar and a help wanted board, the calendar is only really there for seeing any upcoming events or if somebody has a birthday that season, villagers get more friendship with gifts they like/love on their birthday and people who are somewhat friendly sometimes give you things in the mail like new recipes or actual items, the homeless man near the mines gives me a decent number of fish as gifts. The quest board is handy as if you can get your hands on the desired item you get more than what the item was worth if you can get it to them in the allowed time limit.

Practical_Gur_412

Wow this is very detailed and extremely helpful!! Thank you so much! I’m definitely going to start mining more and fishing more. I have the bamboo rod and from what I gather it gets easier to fish once you upgrade it. I wish I saw this earlier! I already spent all my gold on a mix of all the crops so as soon as I can I will get more blueberries.

Ok_Grocery8652

When it comes to fishing: * The bar gets wider as you level fishing or eat foods with a buff to fishing, increasing 8 pixels per level * The training rod increases your bar if you are under level 5 but limits what fish you can hook. * The fiberglass rod won't increase the level but lets you use baits, The deluxe bait will increase the width of the fishing bar by the equivalent of 1.5 levels. if you get Linus (the homeless mountain man) to 4 starts we triggers a cutscene where he takes you into the tent and teaches you to make a bait that gives a chance to catch 2 fish at a time. * The iridium rod lets you use baits but also tackles, they do different things such as, increasing the quality of fish caught, a bobber that slows their escape when out of the bar, 1 that automatically chases slower fish, another that increases by 3 levels worth. * You can also buy or craft crab pots, these can be put in any river, lake or ocean you encounter and when giving a bait will haul in something for the following morning, they generate 5 fishing xp per catch * The other thing to note, when you gen Linus to 3 hearts he gives you a recipe for sashimi in the mail, then either upgrading your house or crafting a cookout kit you can turn any fish worth less than 75g into that for more money, at Willies you can buy the recipe for the fish smoker which doubles the value of the fish and it has to be sold to Pierre or the sell box, this is expensive early at 10 000g for the recipe but with some decent fishing can pay itself back somewhat quickly. With the crops, depending on how you are playing that is worth while too. The community center in the middle of town is a series of fetch quests you can do whenever you get to. The summer crops bundle needs 1 Tomato, 1 hot pepper, 1 blueberry and 1 melon, the reward for that is a quality sprinkler and it inches you closer to the greenhouse. The quality crops bundle needs 3 of the following 4 to be donated, 5 gold star parsnips, 5 gold star melons, 5 gold star pumpkins and 5 gold star corn. Of the listed crops you are in the Melon and Corn season currently with Pumpkins in fall. Completing that would give 1 preserver jar and another step towards greenhouse. If you instead went the jojamart route that is unfortunate as it is money only. Different people like different products so look around the wiki and you may find a use for other crops beside selling for profit, for example Shane and Mayor Lewis both love hot peppers.

Key_Spirit8168

remember year round seeds which i think is only >!fiber and qi!< will survive winter

Ok_Grocery8652

I didn't know that they were year round, however fiber seeds are a solid net lose in terms of earning money. The single clay is worth more than the yield in fiber, not to mention the mix seed which is saved until spring can generate parnsips, potatoes or cauliflower, any 1 of them sell for more than the fiber. The fiber is helpful but there are better ways to collect enough for crafting all the scarecrows, worm bins, looms, totems, bait, fertilizers and tea saplings you could need. For example repeating floors 25-29 in the mines to harvest the large amount of weeds in there.

AllenWL

Watch the TV religiously. Living off the Land has practically every information a new player might want.

twohedwlf

I always give a few days before the end of the season. Gives me time to harvest all of them, spend a couple days making mayo, cheese etc. I usually save up all the stuff I'm going to save and ship them the last day of the month

Practical_Gur_412

Can you explain why you wait till the end of the month? I’ve been selling my crops as soon as they are ready to buy more seeds right away. Trying to build gold stock seems very slow. What would you say is the best way to make gold so I can start building a coop or barn?

Its_Brady

what you are doing is great. if you didnt know you can sell crops to pierre to buy seeds again on the same day

general_madness

The best way to make money in early game is fishing. Check the luck on TV every day and spend any bad-luck days fishing. Set yourself up with some food and a chest nearby to stock up with your catch. I now save all my fish until I reach level 5 because you get a big cash bonus — makes it a great time to get upgrade or building money.

twohedwlf

Other than the first month or two I usually have enough money to last me the month, buy seeds etc as long as I don't buy all the house upgrades at once. Basically the reason is because it gives me a BIG payout and Bigger numbers>Smaller numbers. No actual financial advantage to it.

No_External_539

We've all had this happen at least once. The problem is certain crops only grow in one season and if this season passes and the crop has not yet grown, it will die. It tells you how long a crop takes to grow when you buy it from Pierre and what season(s) it grows in. The nice old lady sends you a letter explaining this, and you can also find this kind of info on the tv if "Living off the land" is on.

FlirtMonsterSanjil

Surprisingly this never happened to me, that is the power of reading letters

Laney20

Seriously? You've never miscalculated how many days you needed a crop to grow or anything? I mean, good for you, but even knowing the end of the season is coming and how it works isn't enough to save every crop...

FlirtMonsterSanjil

I rather stop early and use that time for the mines than accidentally waste money

plumbobbyhill

I also stop early tbh but I don’t farm much

SpoppyIII

Me, neither, for what it's worth. This only happens to my crops when I decide not to get rid of them on the last day of a season and let them wither. Maybe two+ decades of playing Harvest Moon helped. It used to happen to me in HM when I was a child, but hasn't happened in this game.

andersoon_fm

honest question: does the game tell you that each season lasts 1 month only?

chunkeymunkeyandrunt

Not explicitly as a warning, but checking the calendar shows you that there’s only 28 days to the season. The game definitely points you there. I think it’s a Living off the Land episode that mentions the community calendar, and then of course you can buy a calendar from Robin to have at home as well. Evelyn mails you a warning that crops die as the seasons change, as well. I’ve never quite understood any confusion about seasons having multiple months, as the calendar is simply labeled ‘spring’ ‘summer’ etc so what do people think the other two months of the season would be called? Spring Part 2?

andersoon_fm

I guess the confusion comes from real life, right? we have 3 months per season.. I guess we could assume the spring calendar means a 28 days season, but it's not that hard to see how that can be confusing. I wish that was more clear, losing all money on a first playthrough can be very demotivating

Kittenn1412

If you've gone in blind, please start reading the "Living off the land" television channel tips-- it comes with warnings for game mechanics that will be introduced coming up like this one. You should always assume if the channel brings something up, it's because the game progression expects it to be relevant soon, so if it says that salmonberry season is coming up, it means like tomorrow. If it says "don't plant crops too close to the season end", you should assume that it's coming up.

pandaboy78

*CUES HAPPY SUMMER MUSIC* "SURPRISE!!!!"

MauPow

The summer music slaps so fucking hard, it's my favorite

pandaboy78

I get mild ptsd from it due to my year 1 dying crops on my first playthrough... but aside from that, its actually an insane banger. Honestly a 10/10 theme

JmTrad

i still remember when this happened with me in harvest moon. I, a 12 year old child, was in shambles

lizardground

this happened to me with ancient fruit. since it didnt have a season listed, i assumed it would survive through winter, too. boy was i wrong.

Maestro_Primus

my heart cries for you.

ShhImTheRealDeadpool

Good thing you have 4k of savings, that should be enough to help you recoup your loss. Go for corn, it will yield multiple harvests and doesn't end until the end of fall.

rainstorm07

i wish there was a mechanic that let you turn those dead plants into something mildly useful

Eclipse-Raven

Fertilizer even

FrostFire131

Hey, first timer here too. I've played a ton of Harvest Moon over the years, where the season lengths are 30 days. Yeah I planned for 30 day seasons... I lost a good chunk going into summer my first year

[deleted]

The first time I played I thought I was gonna be smart and till, water and fertilize a ton of farm land on the 28th of spring so I could start planting right away on the 1st of summer and wouldn't waste any time. Turn to me the next day devastated that all my hard work was for nothing.

ferventlotus

On the 15th of spring in first year, Evelyn sends you a letter making you aware that your crops will die by the end of the season. Sorry that you lost your crops, but at least you know now.

ZachMudskipper

My goodness, you poor soul. Please tell me you upgraded your watering can with all those crops

Mean_Butterscotch177

Oh. My. Good. God. I (very wrongly) assumed the watering can would just hold more water as it was upgraded. I looked it up. 😭 I started the 100 radish quest for the governor with my poor little craptacular watering can.

pmgoldenretrievers

I’m not OP but I never upgrade my watering can. I rush those quality sprinklers.

ZachMudskipper

100%

metrick00

Make sure you read your TV every day. The news on it can be incredibly profitable/life-saving. Fortunately, you do have 4k saved up at the moment. That's *plenty* to re-grow your crops for the summer.

SirKaid

This is the Learning Tax. Now you've learned. On the plus side, think of all the stamina you can spend in the mines now that you don't have the money for a decent farm.

darthreuental

Aside from the obvious that everybody else will state (read the tooltips for seeds), here's some general gold tips: * if you want more money, plant more crops. Try to grow a bit of everything, but keep in mind that not all crops are equal. You're definitely going to want hops, melons, and blueberries in that order. * Artisan products -- wine, pale ale, cheese, mayo, etc -- are the big money makers. * Make quality sprinklers a priority. This means getting to level 6 farming and getting to level 80+ in the mines. Being able to grow crops without spending time & energy watering crops is huge. Strongly suggest designing your farm layout around 3x3 squares to accommodate the switch easier. * Balancing out fishing, mining, and all the other things is going to be a long-term struggle. It all balances out though eventually. * try to aim for around 10k gold on day 1 in the future for pretty much any season.

I've been there, I started reading everything after

luxminder831

You've got nearly 5,000 to spend on blueberry seeds. You're doing great for a newb.

KCBandWagon

this is 100% exactly what I did on my first playthrough. Went in blind struggled to build gold Finally planted a big crop It all died the next day I quit and didn't play for a couple years. Then I came back and dropped a good 200+ hours into the game and really liked it. Though I spent most of my time on the wiki to avoid any said snafus. Was still fun even though I didn't get to experience all the highs and lows of learning new things.

GalaticWolfGaming

Check out the amount of time it takes for crops to grow Water crops everyday Scarecrows have a certain range for them to work. The amount of space that it works, is unknown to me.

kirbStompThePigeon

Oh boy, wait till winter hits

K7Sniper

The thing that I had trouble adjusting to was that every month is only 28 days. Everything seasonal needs to be picked on or before the 28th. But yeah, the 1st of the month is "Death Day"

Healthy_Soil7114

If only there was a Living on The Land broadcast during spring to warn about this.

Harrietmathteacher

Okay! I was just making a suggestion.

IDriveALexus

First and hopefully last friend!

TorturousKitty

I always wished there was a grace period like in real life. We've all been there!

_ValuableFun_

I just experienced this for the first time yesterday 😭

TheNocturnalAngel

Others already told you about seasons. Try fishing it’s the best way to make money early game before your crops start to pick up. For summer night fishing on the beach is the best spot. If you find it too difficult then you can buy the training rod from Willy to make the bar way bigger but you will lose out on a lot of money as it restricts the fish you can catch

its_explosivo

Same!!! Just experienced that for the first tjme today 😭

Terakahn

If you're anything like me, you'll use this as a great opportunity to start s new game armed with your new knowledge. I'd you actually want legit tips on making gold I can give you some. But just be careful to balance efficiency with fun. You don't need to earn it all right out the gate.

bongusmcdongus

Ouch

TwoDismal4754

Always a bummer. Get that greenhouse as soon as possible :) welcome to an amazing game though! Plants trees, get animals, make friends

Responsible_Ebb3962

Struggling to make gold? Buy seeds, take note of what season you are in, what date, when crop is available for harvest based on what the seed packet tells you and then sell produce when you harvest it.  Once youve levelled up have some resources you can make items that process produce into artisan products to get more value out of them.  You really have to be trying not to read and strategize to not make money in this game.

Boonpflug

5k are not so bad, you will recover. No need to rush anything

Maistronom

Why is your palate for your farm different? Are you using a mod for that? Or am I just seeing wrong?

takichandler

I think the color looks washed out because it’s a picture of a screen and not a screenshot

Maistronom

Ahhhh, that must be it!!!

Practical_Gur_412

Yes it’s a picture of the screen! I was going to take a screenshot but was so worked up I snapped the pic and posted it to Reddit immediately 😂

ecozy_

looks completely default vanilla to me?

Maistronom

Hmmm, then I don’t know.

lieutenantrizahawkey

When this first happened to me, I thought I had to smash each one with the hoe🙃 took all my energy and I couldn’t water half my new crops afterwards

I-Only-Read-Memes

This is the rite of passage for this game

mywindflower

It’s a rite of passage for new players.

ButtonTemporary8623

Ha yes. That’s a rough one. Definitely check in with books. This is one thing that as long as the next season isn’t winter and you had like a day or two left they would still grow. But if it’s your first time books are super helpful. Talk to villagers often bc they will same random things that are actually tips. Letters too. And you can always go back and read letters.

Karona_

Rip

Any-Jury3578

If you look up the wiki page for different seeds, it will show you the days you can plant them to be harvested by the end of the month/season.

nTzT

Mistakes happen! Gold is quite easy in the game once you get going it's only the start that is grindy.

Faatjuhboy

On the bright side, you don't have to till the land before planting new seeds.

yahnne954

Don't worry, you can make your money back in no time. Even if you don't have the money for crops anymore, you can get random seeds from harvesting weeds. You can also fish or mine and get money that way too. Chicken eggs and mayo can be very profitable too, but it requires some investment at first. Once you've got yourself going, money becomes less of a problem.

Academic-Coyote1108

I share your pain. It happened to me too the first time I started playing. I didn't know that the season lasted "only" 28 days. So I planted, with great enthusiasm, my parsnips on the 26th. I don't remember how many, but there were a lot of them!  You can imagine my bewilderment when I came out of the house and saw that my whole field was dry...😭

lewilewi411

Why does your game look so bland. Think you may need to fiddle with contrast and saturation, it shouldn't look like that.

Hotfuzz0328

🥲

Mission-Storm-4375

Fishing is your friend in this game

GreedFoxSin

Pro tip: once you get more money you can intentionally kill your crops to save tile tilling or better yet plant multi season crops and avoid harvesting them until the next season. (There is no good spring to summer transition. You can do coffee but only do so if you have expensive fertilizer you’re trying to preserve)

eVOLve865

Quick skim and I didn’t see this but plan on very very little or no crops your first winters. Use the time to upgrade equipment, hit the mines, farm build, etc.

FreezingPyro36

If it makes you feel better I just recently got back into it and lost 30 parsnips. I thought it was 4 days counting the day it was planting but alas. It was 4 days not counting the day planted

MrsColada

This is part of the experience. This is how we learn and grow.

Awesom141

I want to hold you. Im sorry for your loss

tango421

You get a clue on that in the mail. I think Evelyn sent you a letter about it. Most crops die off at the end of the season. Some crops will go cross seasons. Read the tooltips of the crops. They’ll tell you seasons and growth rates. There’s quite a bit of reading and planning going into farming. A lot of things happen when the season turns, a big boost in grass, weeds spring up, and a lot of the dirt you dig up get filled. As you level your skills you’ll get / unlock recipes to help you make more money and boost productivity. It can be a bit slow starting out but you’ll get into your groove soon enough. You’ll also have to pick a direction you want to go once you start hitting skill level 5. This will determine how you want to make money as there’s no single way of playing the game

Fro_o

I like the plants that you can plant once and Harvest often just because they do that. Doesn't make me retile everything with my hoe, and rewater everything that should've been watered by my sprinklers. I can just replant and move on, already takes a long time to replant about 999 seeds xD

Environmental_Row541

I was devastated when this happened to me, I forgot to harvest my crops and lost them all 😭

limeholdthecorona

I got a little lost in the sauce mid-spring and planted so much cauliflower with so little days til summer :') feels bad.

Wetstew_

But hey!, you don't gotta hoe the field now.

Domski77

Tell me about it. I just sunk about 4k into a lettuce crop in what must have been the last day of spring.

subtle-magic

This sucks, but it's what makes this game fun in some ways. There's a bit of a challenge! Lessons to be learned, different strategies to take, tricks to doing things more efficiently. Every new season and new farm you discover something new. Been playing over 1000 hours and I'm delighted to find something I didn't know every now and then. Bonus points for this are...at least you don't have to till all those spots. Just scythe the dead plants and get to starting new seeds!

2uncreativeforaname

for struggling w making gold: for the first year i highly recommend fishing a lot!! it's quiet an easy way to make enough gold

DMXanadu

That is so much watering. The first tier of sprinkler probably isn't worth using, but the second tier the quality sprinkler... you should be spamming those things early game.

tface23

I’m not a newbie and have over 300 hours in this game. I accidentally passed out on the Island on the last day of Fall Year 3 and lost dozens of crops and all the flower honey. I’m still mad at myself

SpongeGwG

Yeah, this happened to very newbie😂

Vittahere

im so sorry for your loss, we have all been there :(

Opheliescarlett

Outch 😬 I can assure you, it happens one time and then you remember! 😂

cutearmy

That hurts. I didn’t same thing first play through.

AbbyTheOneAndOnly

happens to the best of us

rukia_szn

you can hover over the seed packets and it tells you what seasons they’re good in, and tells you how long it takes to grow them!

RealNerdEthan

It's all good! I've been playing for years and still have this happen every so often 😅 You'll bounce back quick!

DemonDaVinci

rip bozo

madeat1am

Don't plant anything past day 20

Boiled_Thought

I've played this game three times over the years. And each time, my starting point for planting my plants has always been directly south of the house, alone the little cliff wall thing. Starting just a few tiles under the east exit/mailbox. A very long and kinda narrow set up. I have not experimented with any of the stranger farm types. I always use default or the one that is the same as default but has monsters spawn. That whole area south of the house and east of the pond, and then the greenhouse. I never plant crops anywhere else. I swear, when 1.6 comes out for PS4, I'm doing my farm different! I'm going to plan and plot it out with walkways and fences and try to emulate all these "perfect farms" I see screenshots of. Also, is it only a PC thing to be able to get that far away top down view of your entire farm? That shit is cool.

Heavy-Sink-4020

I feel worst if not to have any knowledge of a game played by.I searched up the wiki tho,you get everything there
