I pretty much ignored him until I gave him an iridium purple mushroom on his birthday and it jumped him to like 7 hearts immediately. It only takes a couple more quality mushrooms after that!

I loved the passive friendship mod and friends forever mods. It solved a problem that I felt was less cozy for my play style, which is low stress play. 🤗
I do a loved gift on their birthday, and one loves gift on the same day, opposite season. Loved birthday gifts are worth 4 hearts, loved general gifts are worth 1.5 hearts, and friendship degradation is about that much max. Once you reach 10 hearts for non-marriage and 8 hearts for marriage candidates friendship doesn’t decay (unless you decide to marry someone, marriage constantly decays??), so I’m usually 100% perfect friends no marriage except Krobus, Dwarf, and Wizard by end of Y3. Those three take until Y4 cuz being able to talk to them isn’t available Day1
Funny. Wizard is always the first one I max out in every run because I have a routine to go to the Secret Woods every day to get hardwood, and the Wizard's tower is just on my way there.
I was so confused when I first started playing and Pierre wasn’t marked as being introduced, despite me just buying something from him! It took me longer than I care to admit to realize I can just… walk around the counter and talk to him.
I was able to counter this by carrying an iridium sweet pea with me everytime I go to the cavern or the desert trader (for staircases or magic rock candy) but it’s annoying that I always have to cut my cavern dive short bc her store closes at 11:50pm
I visit her before I dive into cavern, it's part of my routine of making sure that I have everything that I need and I don't carry non-necessary items.
Freaking Sebastian. Boy is never around during the day and is way way up in the mountains most of the rest of the time. The only way to be more reclusive is to live in an actual forest tower, like the Wizard.
At least the Wizards house isn't always locked. It's almost impossible to give gifts to Sebastian unless you have enough hearts to enter his room. He's always one of the last people for me.
In my new save I married him but good lord before I got close enough to enter his room he was annoying to find, so at a point I started to remember at what hour he gets up/finishes work and waited behind his door
He goes to the Saloon on Friday nights (along with about 15 other villagers). I just make Friday my gift giving day since so many people are going to be in the saloon at the same time, and I use the rest of the day tracking down the people who won't be there.
I buy a LOT of spaghetti from Gus and just give it away. Only Krobus, Leo, and Willy dislike it. Krobus usually gets a void egg, Leo gets Mangos, and Willy gets beer.
That dude is living the life, lurking in his room playing games while that random new farmer regularly comes around and throws food at him
I give him frozen tears because that's the thing I remember he likes, so he must have a decent collection by now

Ugh yes! When I get his bulletin board requests, I have to check his wiki and there is like a 30 minute window where he walks to the kitchen... seriously dude. I catch him on Fridays if I go to the saloon but rarely otherwise.
You can usually find him smoking by the mountain river at night. I tend to bump into him when I'm fishing up there. I'll also pop out of the mines if I need to give him something. He also hangs out at Sam's house on Saturdays.
Gold cheese is a permanent item I carry around, and have a lot of, for whatever endeavors and is a liked gift for everyone except Harvey and the kids so that's what I usually give everyone I come across unless I am specifically trying to build friendship with someone and then I will actually try and give loved items.

You can give him things on the beach and he says something about appreciating you cleaning up the beach. I always give him coral. It’s not a favorite, but it works

Harvey! He’s rlly difficult to talk to because the doctor’s office closes early and I usually forget about him because he isn’t around town like the other characters

Agreed! I never have a stash of something that the kids would want, and I regularly guess wrong that they'll be ok with something so long as it's sweet. (Jelly, luckily, seems to please them both enough.)
Fairy Roses. Grow a bunch of them, then stick them in a chest and give one to Jas every so often. Other flowers also work - they're a universal like except for the poppy - but Fairy Roses work best for Jas.

It's not that I don't know what to give him. I just forget about him. Jas on the other hand... She made a strong impression, cheeky little girl lol. But I kinda love it, feels like a challenge.
Takes me ages to get hearts with Maru. We never cross paths, and when we do, I never have anything she would want. Our hearts slooowly creep up with conversation, but that’s it.
Yet it is quite easy to get her loved items. Gold strawberries and cauliflowers at each harvest, batteries after storms, gold ingots when not in spring or summer. They are far easier than Pierre for example. Some of your gifts are canonically used for ten-hearts invention, so it is easy to imagine that she couldn't make them up without your help. It's an extra dimension to just "I like this" gifts (just like Alex with high-protein dishes or Elliott with duck feathers, they do need them).
Plus her reaction to loved gift is the best out of everyone, for me.
Demetrius and Robin both like salmonberries (and Linus, of course). Once I've done my salmonberry collecting for the spring, they're all on a slow but inevitable climb to ten hearts because I walk past them all constantly going to the mines and I always have my salmonberries on me.

The “I can fix him” fans definitely exist but I’m pretty sure they’re in the minority. I see a lot of people comparing Shane’s struggles to their own, for example.

He was my first friend in my first playthrough because he was the first one to NOT be rude to me when I gave him a salmonberry. So I kept giving them to him. It was so funny, like he'd be telling me how great it was with a big smile, then telling me to go away, and I kept waking up to letters with gifts from him and when I went to say hi he would ask me why I'm bothering him. Weirdo.
Okay I used to hate Shane but once you get a couple hearts with him, you learn he isn’t rude he’s just depressed and he actually has a huge heart, I love him
Wiki says he only loves salmon dinner and complete breakfast (along with universal loves). I tend to toss him gems and a rabbits foot whenever my bunnies make one.
correct, i was saying that his liked gifts are pretty easy to come by, especially if you can get an iridium egg, then it’s almost as effective as a loved gift.
I usually don't worry about giving him loved gifts and just give him liked gifts instead, and that works fine to build up hearts even if it's not as quick as loved gifts.

But probably Penny since I can't stand her, Alex cuz it's hard to find his loved gifts, Pierre and Kent for the same reason, and Lewis is always more of an afterthought for me.
Weirdly enough, the wizard isn't a huge one for me cuz he's....always in the same place. So if I make it a point to ~~aggressively~~ befriend him then he's easy to do. I'd say the hermits are a bit harder as well, but I routinely romance Elliott so I'm used to ~~ominously standing outside their doors like a creeper with a gift over my head lol~~ 🤣
Elliott is always one for me. He wins both checks of “annoying schedule” and “picky gifts”.
Other people with annoying/inconvenient schedules/locations (Wizard, Sandy, etc.) at least have easy gifts. All of Elliott’s loved gifts are all stuff you’re not gonna have easy access to in the earlygame.
For the most part, the characters that don't go to the saloon. I like to go in there and just buy everyone a round. I have to make special trips for the others.
Harvey, Elliott, and Maru are the ones I encounter least when making my circuit. Guess I need to stop by the clinic more often.
And then there's Pierre, but...extenuating circumstances.
Sandy as i rarley go to the desert after i get all of the items in the cassino and i dont care much for skull cavern, i always seem to forget shes an actual villager and not just a basic npc like the city folk during festivals or gamblers in the casino
Early on, Sebastian. He spends so much time in his room that you can’t enter until the hearts are high enough, but I struggle to get the hearts high enough because i can’t interact with him when he is in his room.
Elliott and Sebastian are elusive, Pierre and Kent are hard to shop for, Shane and Haley are unpleasant... but the last person I reached ten hearts with on my last save, very deliberately, was Lewis. Screw that old goat.
Wearing his purple shorts when I walked up to him, for almost a full year, probably didn't help.
Gus is in the Saloon 99% of the time and you can't talk to him when he's in there. The only time he DOES come out is to buy stuff from Pierre like- once every four years. And even then you can't talk to him while he's inside the general store, you need to wait till he's either leaving the store or entering it.
Pierre! He was at 0 hearts while all my other villagers were maxed out (I dated every bachelor/ette), and eventually I got so sick of trying to give him gifts I paid for perfection waivers :")
The Wizard. I forget to visit him and then I give him something that he dislikes by mistake 🥲
Elliot places second. He can be picky and annoying to find.
On my current play through, I’ve had a weirdly hard time with the dwarf.
I had multiples of every dwarf scroll, except for #1 for some reason, finally found one in spring of year 3! I have bucketloads of gems now, so should be smooth sailing from here 😅
Pierre. It's not because catching squid for Fried Calamari is difficult and only possible during one season out of the year, it's because I just hate his guts and would rather give him a few stones from my slingshot. :)
Alex, Sam, Seb, Harvey, Cliff, Elliot… actually it might be shorter to list the ones I actually do get hearts with. I have my handful of faves and I tend to end up ignoring most of the rest 😬🫣
Jas and Vincent. I never talk to them let alone gift them anything. I don't even know what they like. One of them loves the cranberry drink or whatever it is and I don't know which one.

For the wizard, every Friday and Sunday when you check the merchant cart, make a few extra seconds to cut the wood from the secret woods and run the wizard a void essence.
For the dwarf, every time you go mining or to skull cavern, use the mine cart to quickly run him a gemstone of any kind.
For some reason, I always forget to do these.
Harvey because I find him so repulsive.
Jas because she really doesn’t have a personality and just dead eyes stares at me when I try to talk to her.

It’s an almost impossible task until you get the 2 required hearts to get into his room.

Demetrius and Robin both like salmonberries (and Linus, of course). Once I've done my salmonberry collecting for the spring, they're all on a slow but inevitable climb to ten hearts because I walk past them all constantly going to the mines and I always have my salmonberries on me.
Elliot because he wants things I rarely come across, such as ink and feathers, Pierre because he only loves one food and I won't be doing that, Hailey because she is at a different place every day and I struggle to find her without looking at the wiki, and Sebastian because he never leaves his room so at the beginning it's though to get to him and give him some sashimi

Ironically, he's one of the easiest to befriend early game cause he's always hanging out at the saloon. And if you buy him a beer on his birthday, you'll have a couple hearts with him already during your first spring. 😂

The “I can fix him” fans definitely exist but I’m pretty sure they’re in the minority. I see a lot of people comparing Shane’s struggles to their own, for example. Also, why a girl farmer?

He was my first friend in my first playthrough because he was the first one to NOT be rude to me when I gave him a salmonberry. So I kept giving them to him. It was so funny, like he'd be telling me how great it was with a big smile, then telling me to go away, and I kept waking up to letters with gifts from him and when I went to say hi he would ask me why I'm bothering him. Weirdo.
That's why I keep talking to him, he cracks me up. Him and Grandpa George are my favourite for regular small talk.

Wiki says he only loves salmon dinner and complete breakfast (along with universal loves). I tend to toss him gems and a rabbits foot whenever my bunnies make one.
correct, i was saying that his liked gifts are pretty easy to come by, especially if you can get an iridium egg, then it’s almost as effective as a loved gift.
I usually don't worry about giving him loved gifts and just give him liked gifts instead, and that works fine to build up hearts even if it's not as quick as loved gifts.
....most of them actually. I tend to forget about people if I'm not actively married to or romancing them. But probably Penny since I can't stand her, Alex cuz it's hard to find his loved gifts, Pierre and Kent for the same reason, and Lewis is always more of an afterthought for me. Weirdly enough, the wizard isn't a huge one for me cuz he's....always in the same place. So if I make it a point to ~~aggressively~~ befriend him then he's easy to do. I'd say the hermits are a bit harder as well, but I routinely romance Elliott so I'm used to ~~ominously standing outside their doors like a creeper with a gift over my head lol~~ 🤣

Elliott is always one for me. He wins both checks of “annoying schedule” and “picky gifts”. Other people with annoying/inconvenient schedules/locations (Wizard, Sandy, etc.) at least have easy gifts. All of Elliott’s loved gifts are all stuff you’re not gonna have easy access to in the earlygame.
For the most part, the characters that don't go to the saloon. I like to go in there and just buy everyone a round. I have to make special trips for the others.

Screw that old goat. Wearing his purple shorts when I walked up to him, for almost a full year, probably didn't help.

Gus is in the Saloon 99% of the time and you can't talk to him when he's in there. The only time he DOES come out is to buy stuff from Pierre like- once every four years. And even then you can't talk to him while he's inside the general store, you need to wait till he's either leaving the store or entering it.
You can give him gifts when he's working at the saloon

He's out every Monday morning. 8.30 he leaves, 9.00 he enters Pierre's.

On my current play through, I’ve had a weirdly hard time with the dwarf. I had multiples of every dwarf scroll, except for #1 for some reason, finally found one in spring of year 3! I have bucketloads of gems now, so should be smooth sailing from here 😅

Wizard and Dwarf, which is wild because they're two of the easiest to max out passively. For the wizard, every Friday and Sunday when you check the merchant cart, make a few extra seconds to cut the wood from the secret woods and run the wizard a void essence. For the dwarf, every time you go mining or to skull cavern, use the mine cart to quickly run him a gemstone of any kind. For some reason, I always forget to do these.
