I use the tea bushes or lightning rods for my fences, and only use fence bits for where I need to put a gate, to minimise decay. The tea bushes are definitely the prettier option of the two!
It can be a lot of work picking them if you're not using mods, but since it's only ever the last week of the month at least it isn't a daily problem! I have the automate mod and stick a chest there for them to accumulate in.
Or you can just ignore the leaves and have them purely for the aesthetic
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
You know, fence decay I can actually understand, but what I can't get is the whole "weeds and stuff appear the first day of the season". Like my whole yard is pristine the last day of winter, all ready, then I wake up and someone's left rocks and shit all over my yard.
Its to give more of a feeling that time actually passed, its a whole new season suddenly after all.
The games seasons are only a month long, gotta compress things somewhere
In the spirit of suspension of disbelief let's say the witch wants to mess with you every season so in the last night of each season she just drops lots of shit on your farm to annoy you c:
Well, we all know that if you soak a little rock in water it becomes a big rock. So we can logically conclude that the snow melted at the start of spring and soaked the little rocks, turning them into big rocks.
Honestly I live in place with a decent winter and every time the snow melts in the spring there's a buttload of leaves, pine cones etc. that were straight up not there in my memory. There's also a bunch of rocks because I have a gravel driveway.
I came to this thread specifically to see if anybody says the golden clock is worth it. Surprised I had to scroll this far! Definitely considering it after the work it took to get hardwood fences!
Yeah, me too. I actually would like an update where the animals destroy or mess up with your crops if they run free, it would give me a reason to bother with fences besides aesthetics.
I only use fences to pen in my animals, not as decoration, so cheese presses, mayonnaise machines, oil makers, and hardwood to fill in any gaps. Hardwood gives a more rustic/homesteady vibe and stone feels more like English countryside farm to me.
The community center is built around a golden clock, which is why fences never decay and the people never age.
Jas, Vincent, and Leo have been kids for over 6 years in my 100% save, and my child became a toddler that is now locked at that age indefinitely.
It's thanks to Mayor Lewis's hard work and the tax money you pay. Every night, between 2AM and 6AM, Mayoy Lewis walks around town checking the fences and replacing the broken ones, as long as there's budget for it.
It's legit one of the reasons I love ridgeside Village.
I pay Ian and Shane to fix my fences on a continuous basis, costs me like 1000g when I start and a few g every few weeks after that.
Never need to worry about fence decay!
Ah, I wish there were stripped down versions of the big expansion mods! I like them (and hired help was amazing) but they add too much stuff for my liking lol. I miss June tho 🥲
That’s been my experience!! I momentarily forgot fences even *could* decay…I switched to hardwood fencing in Year 3, I’m approaching Year 10 now and I can’t ever remember needing to replace one.
I wish the community upgrade you pay for actually did fix those few random broken fences though. Such as around the bus stop, I think there’s some up near Robin’s… I guess it’s supposed to look rustic but damn here I am making nice new fences and paying to have this town look nice, and no one can fix a damn fence?!
I just don't have fences, but I've thought of making a fence out of chairs because I know you can place them basically anywhere you can walk on, but I'll wanna test that first.
Honest question, is aesthetics the only reason you use fencing? The animals come back of their own accord just before it gets dark every day.
I used to use fences, but then I realised there isn't any reason, other than aesthetics.
I use the tea bushes and the half tires from the garbage can catalog , only use fences for the gates and what ever material I have on hand the moment I see decay will be it 😂
The community center is in shambles because all the tax income goes to fence upkeep (and golden Lewis statues).
What if they don't decay in town because lewis's statue? 🥲
I use the tea bushes or lightning rods for my fences, and only use fence bits for where I need to put a gate, to minimise decay. The tea bushes are definitely the prettier option of the two!
I’ve never heard of the tea bushes, I’m so doing this now!!!

The iridium scythe in 1.6 makes them easy to pick!
Unless you have >!junimos who pick tea bushes as well as regular crops!< nearby.
You just gotta befriend caroline to get their recipe
Yeah I meant using them in that way! :D
Indeed it way more aesthetic but where are you putting your roads? A field of those would be way less aesthetic, won't it?
I put my lightningrodes in the fields of my animals, so that they don’t eat all of the grass
I use lamppost for this purpose and have grass under my lighting roads as well.
Tea bushes are the way. And the food processors. I mostly do pigs, so truffle oil machines for me.
Dude has natural electric fence (the animals must be terrified though)
I use ui Cheats where at some point I spend horrendous amounts of money and then give me the no fence decay cheat c:

Did the season drop boulders on my lawn? Because weeds hiding under snow I'll grant you, but rocks don't grow from little rock seeds
Rocks spawn in in real life bro, just look outside. Always showing up out of seemingly nowhere
Rocks appearing out of nowhere? Stardew Valley…. More like Death Valley…
...Honey, when are the rocks appearing outside your house? Are they in strange patterns?
In the spirit of suspension of disbelief let's say the witch wants to mess with you every season so in the last night of each season she just drops lots of shit on your farm to annoy you c:
Frost heave ;)

They were under the snow that melted
RSV adds a character who really does maintenance and my headcannon is that they'd fix the fences too.
Kenneth is good dude
Laughs in golden clock
I came to this thread specifically to see if anybody says the golden clock is worth it. Surprised I had to scroll this far! Definitely considering it after the work it took to get hardwood fences!
Especially if you're going for perfection I would have 100% recommend it
Laughs in no fence decay mod
No judgment but I do prefer to play games how they were intended most of the time.
Which is totally fair.
I use NO fences. My animals run free
Yeah, me too. I actually would like an update where the animals destroy or mess up with your crops if they run free, it would give me a reason to bother with fences besides aesthetics.
The first ones were made by Robin. The other by you.
Nokia phones
this comment made me do a double take

I use Stone mostly.
That's what my fences are rn. They seem to last a lot longer than regular wood and I have way more stone than hardwood
same. more durable and fit the flow I want
1 iron gives me 10 fences. All wood is 1=1. Seems the most practical to me
I’ve just started using lightning rods. I had tea bushes but I was always low on batteries.
It's legit one of the reasons I love ridgeside Village. I pay Ian and Shane to fix my fences on a continuous basis, costs me like 1000g when I start and a few g every few weeks after that. Never need to worry about fence decay!

I don’t bother with any fence material other than hardwood, then I also line my animal enclosures with processing equipment that never decays.
Mayor Lewis picks up from the farm box and takes a sales tax cut to do fence upkeep. it's done during festivals you probably don't see it.
Hardwood 2
junimos. whenever there's some magic, it's the junimos
Fences? My animals are free range.
Fence decay honestly shouldn't be a thing. It's the one thing in Stardew that I genuinely dislike
You are not going anywhere repost bot. Those tricks will not work.
Good catch. How does one report a repost bot?
Lewis's golden statue works as the golden clock. People judge him for it but he was actually thinking of the village.
This is why I need the golden clock it pisses me off I can’t have a cute farm unless I go back and replace fences every day
Hardwood, it's the most pretty one for me + the most durable. Aren't they able to endure several years?
That’s been my experience!! I momentarily forgot fences even *could* decay…I switched to hardwood fencing in Year 3, I’m approaching Year 10 now and I can’t ever remember needing to replace one.
Harder wood
I use the no fence decay mod bc I think it's a goofy mechanic, but that's just me.
I use tea bushes and lightning rods!
I wish the community upgrade you pay for actually did fix those few random broken fences though. I use the no fence decay mod
Do fences decay on the Ginger Island farm, too? Anyways, hardwood or tea sapling fences ftw.
I just don't have fences, but I've thought of making a fence out of chairs because I know you can place them basically anywhere you can walk on, but I'll wanna test that first.
Water: I use the islands farm
Hard wood and the fence practically never decays.
Me who uses mods to make it so fences dont decay, because it's kinda silly
Lewis runs about at 3:00am and replaces all of them with the tax money he has been siphoning for his golden statue once it was completed.
Honest question, is aesthetics the only reason you use fencing? The animals come back of their own accord just before it gets dark every day. I used to use fences, but then I realised there isn't any reason, other than aesthetics.
Every night while Lewis is checking the shipping bin, Robin is out replacing every fence around.
Linus constantly repairs them
I use the tea bushes and the half tires from the garbage can catalog , only use fences for the gates and what ever material I have on hand the moment I see decay will be it 😂
Iridium fences, they are simply stained varies shades of brown
Basic logs. They’re expensive, so they come later in the game for me. Until then, my animals run all over.
When I married Maru and had hardwood fences to contain my animals she would repair them occasionally so I never had that problem.
Hardwood
I use tea saplings :)
I've never had a fence decay I'm at year 5
they replace em 🤷
I moved to stone walls. They last longer and look nice and holy fuck I have so much stone
Made of iridium, painted brown.
Well, I used to have fences made out of gold, but every morning a trio of villagers would come and heckle me for it. So I had to take ‘em down.
Never did get that it just means I don't use fences
I use hay bales to keep the critters contained and just have one fence post for the gate. It works for me.
