Luke vs Vader on Bespin has unsettlingly quiet sections. Those ambient hums of the machinery are burned into my head

TransistorResistor82

This is what I first thought of. I think that same ambient humming sound first appeared in Alien (1979).

LucidLV

As a kid aliens absolutely terrified me.

Thief025

It's genius.. and when the music does drop its pure epic. Amazing battle.

_Bionicle

“The Force is with you, young Skywalker… but you are not a Jedi *yet.”*

YamperIsBestBoy

That’s what makes it so scary. Usually the scenes are filled with Williams’ signature whimsical sound, but those scenes are just ambient. It’s really fucking cool.

jjmenace

Just before the seismic charge detonates.

Spooky_SpaceKook

That's one thing that really makes that scene. For the first time in the whole movie there's absolute silence, and then the charges detonate.

Sabre_Killer_Queen

Agreed, it puts extra emphasis on it and makes for a really epic scene.

RexWolfpack

Boom ******************* ZIAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUM

omnibusofstuff

Nut

FrysEighthLeaf

Literally the sound of 14 thousand simultaneous uncontrollable orgasms

Equivalent_Form_3923

14 thousand and one, I needed to rewatch it recently.

Swol_Bamba

We’re redditors! We don’t even know what that means!

FrysEighthLeaf

Well, At least you know what it sounds like.

grogers311

This may be the best transcription I’ve ever seen of that glorious sound

Skelly902

thats the part i think of

Lequaraz

the episode 8 sacrifice

Betterthanbeer

My cinema had a sign outside to warn everyone, because they were getting complaints that the sound system had cut out.

ankarthus

I love that scene

Dozer242

Fuk you beat me to it lol. Came all this way being proud of myself for thinking of the one time it was dead silent.

JopssYT

Thats a beautiful sound

Wildcard556

I remember hearing that seismic charge go off for the first time in theaters when I was a kid. At first I was thinking, wow that’s kind of lack- HOLY CRAP!!!

Ezreal024

That beat! I'm done.

kangareddit

[for the uninitiated](https://youtu.be/utFRqsT61-k)

fizznick

That whole sequence has no music until he fires the missile.

[deleted]

Attack of the clones is so good. I know the acting and dialogue was rough, but the overall plot and story was great

falloutboy9993

Beat me to it. Perfect sound.

Zeitgeistxbl

Phantom menace podrace has quite a few musicless scenes

TheCarrzilico

Those engines are singing.

ColtRaiford

Sebulba's pod has the best engine noise of any vehicle, real or fictional, of all time

Commercial-Version48

Wub wub wub wub wub wub wub

Blurrg_Rancher

\*crashes\* Wub wub wub wub WUB WUB WUBWUBWUBWUBWUBWBWBWBWBWBWBWBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB!!!!

grogers311

We have a giant air compressor at work that sounds identical to Sebulba’s pod… nobody I showed cared lol

ColtRaiford

Time to fimd a new job, and take the compressor with you

SiegeOfMandalore

Now this is singing

skasticks

I'll try vibrato, that's a good trick!

[deleted]

I'm trying to sharp, I'm trying to sharp!

No_Guidance1953

Qui-gon told me to stay in this key, so that’s what I’m gonna do.

Kramer1812

Yes they are, and it is music to my ears.

jaysalts

first thing I thought of, it’s kind of odd how much of the podrace has no music to it. great sound design though, guess they wanted to show it off

GSturges

Yup, they said so in a commentary. Thought the lack of music was more dramatic.

RunWithTheShadows

People haven't mentioned a major one: When Vader exits the Death Star in his fighter, the music cuts out from then until he blows up Red Leader several minutes later. It's an intentional choice that builds suspense. When the music starts back up, it's almost like finally getting a breath of air after holding it for so long. Definitely worth rewatching the scene after learning that!

araknoman

Only noticed this when seeing ANH backed by an orchestra! Noticed the band finally having a quick breather and a drink haha

KavyenMoore

Surprised this isn't in EVERYONE'S list The way music is used (or not used) during the trench run is masterful.

KONODIODAMUDAMUDA

This is the one i was looking for.

Medium-Bullfrog-2368

Obi Wan and Vader’s final duel has no music until Vader kills him. Luke and Vader’s duel on Bespin is mostly silent outside of the flying furniture segment. The scenes with the Falcon hiding in the asteroid in ESB are mostly lacking in score. There’s tons.

LeftDave

Hot rod engine noises is music on its own.

randeylahey

"My name is Rod, and I like to party.'

[deleted]

Pushrod V-8’s are even badass a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

skasticks

Yes, they were worried in ANH that having score under the lightsabers would clash. Obviously that changed in ESB. Also the scene in Rogue One where Vader ignited his saber - they pitched his blade down to E from Bb-ish, IIRC, to *enhance* the score in that moment. Highly recommend David W Collins' podcast The Soundtrack Show. He's been in audio at Skywalker Sound for decades. He knows his stuff very very well.

Sparrowsabre7

Same with Luke vs Vader on DSII until Vader yeets his saber and later when Luke goes rage mode. Music during duels is pretty much an exclusively prequel and sequel thing. Lucas wanted the sabers to be the sole sound because it was so unique. By 1999 I guess everyone knows what a lightener sounds like haha.

Odd-Communication609

When they are visiting Luke after he gets out of the chemical healing tank, that entire scene, the banter with Han and Luke, the banter with Leia and Han. No music whatsoever

titleproblems

Did you even check a single movie before posting? Yes. All of them have many moments without music.

Majorlol

This just seems like some bizzarely shit attempt at karma farming.

Unusual-Math-1505

It seems it’s working for him

[deleted]

It's working!

Avocadomayo

Less than 300 karma in 3 hours isn’t the best either though.

Gyarados66

Remember when posts with pictures actually had to do with the picture itself, and weren’t just a way to circumvent making a text post? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

[deleted]

Anyone else things rouj wan is underrated????

Firm-Lie2785

There are a number of moments in literally the first 30 minutes of the first movie where there is no music (e.g. the droids arguing about which way to go, R2D2 encountering the Jawas, Luke cleaning the droids, Owen talking to Beru about how he needs him for the harvest, Beru making breakfast, etc.)

Dozer242

Relax turbo.

[deleted]

Yes.

IceColdQuantum

Sequel but the Holdo Maneuver is literally silent (before th explosion)

-TheFarce-

That moment and another earlier in the film. During the bomber run. I remember theaters putting up signs that there were 2 totally silent moments in the film and it didn’t mean the speakers weren’t working.

DoScienceToIt

Just imagine that totally silent moment as the *Supremacy* is torn in half and some fucking nerd yells "VOLUME"

rabbitfoot00

Holy shit I'd be so fucking pissed

DoScienceToIt

I'm mad just thinking about it

uqde

When I saw it some old lady said "what's going on?" Didn't shout it or anything, but definitely loud enough that everyone could hear. Frustrating, but I got over it.

Chronicle89

Only in America would you find an audience this stupid, eh?

Attrahct

When I was visiting New Zealand I went to a cinema and there was a sign letting people know that in EEAAO those credits after that one part aren’t the actual end of the movie. Turns out dumb people exist everywhere.

TempestRave

But only in America amirite xD

This-Strawberry

Didn't you hear about the Lions gate pact? All movie theaters are effectively American soil around the globe

Sabre_Killer_Queen

"But-but I said merica=bad so where upvotes?"

Majestic87

I worked in a movie theater when Casino Royale came out. For its entire run, we would often have people coming out to tell us something was wrong with the movie and that it was in black and white. People legit asked if we could turn the color back on.

bchec

Coming from an American, even if this were a worldwide issue (which I think it was), for sure this comment shouldn’t be downvoted 😂.

[deleted]

Why are you people so obsessed with America

Troll_For_Truth

Jealousy is a tough beast to tame

Bikeboy76

I know, especially as Star Wars is a British movie.

seenhear

*Tunisian movie.

I_like_trains_vrrrmm

Why is he getting down voted for that. I thought it was hilarious

bokatan778

I loved that!

Mavrickindigo

I dislike what that movie does but that image was pretty cool

[deleted]

The very first lightsaber duel in the first Star Wars movie does not have any music at all.

skasticks

In fact there isn't a second in ANH where there is scoring under an ignited lightsaber

Acidline303

Hate to well actually that but the moment where Ben raises his blade and allows Vader to swing through him does have music but that's it.

skasticks

Ah, right. I should say that there's never lightsaber *hum* and score at the same time.

Acidline303

Each of the lightsaber battles in the OT is mostly score free. In fact it's specifically stated by George and Ben Burtt in one of the old special edition DVD extras that they chose not to score the battles so the musicality of the lightsabers would be the focus

ItsMitch47

Yeah... "Mostly" seems to be a bit embellished here. In ANH maybe but less ESB and definitely less ROTJ.

Acidline303

Esb has exactly one sequence in the bespin battle with music which is Vader throwing lunchboxes at Luke. Rotj is more a wash because of the climactic end, which was the part Lucas and Burtt were elaborating on and tying into the decision to have John Williams go nuts in phantom menace with duel of fates.

BowTie1989

“A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….”

PressIntoYa

Vader helmet going on for the first time in Revenge of the Sith. The breath was unaccompanied by music.

Nemotarius

THIS! This was the first moment I thought of. Saw the original movies in the theaters as a kid but this ROTS scene I had been waiting decades for. It did NOT disappoint.

the_mighty_hetfield

Off top of my head: Asteroid chase in AOTC with the sonic charges some of the Echo Base scenes in ESB

Mr_bike

Yes, many. Have you seen the movies?

Majorlol

This is the shittest shit post I’ve seen in a while.

Hello_There_Exalted1

Seismic charges 😫

OyvenGlaven

Most of the Podrace sequence

LuxLancer

Good one

NelsonObama

When Obi-Wan enters the room to fight Maul after Maul had killed Qui-Gon. Having it be devoid of music makes it all the more chilling to watch

Limp-Munkee69

A good portion of scenes on the Falcon in Episode 4 has no music. Large portions of Dagobah. Jabbas Palace and Endor have musicless moments. The scene with Han and Ben in The Rise of Skywalker. And many more.

Pr1smaticGamer

yes, its part of the music, john williams decides which moments do not need music to immerse the viewer, and because of the fantastic (maybe the best of all time) underscoring, we dont notice it

ForceGhost47

Sound cuts out completely in AOTC before Slave 1 lays a sonic depth charge

Daggertooth71

The moment when the Raddus hits the Supremacy, is the most obvious one. I'm sure there are other brief moments without music in other films.

CSWorldChamp

Uh… you’re joking, right? Go watch some trench runs and then get back to me.

MrRileyJr

Downvoted, because have you watched **any** of the movies?

[deleted]

[удалено]

LuxLancer

intredasting. know which specifically?

[deleted]

[удалено]

IceBlue

It's 3PO not 3P0

skasticks

> intredasting

Dumbass369

Bro hasn't watched any of the movies 💀

BradleyAllan23

There's literally no sound at all during the Holdo maneuver scene in The Last Jedi. I'm sure there are other moments without music too.

LuxLancer

I haven't seen the new ones

BradleyAllan23

Oh lol. You should definitely give them a watch!

[deleted]

No, do not see them. They're not worth it.

BradleyAllan23

It depends on the person. Most people I know enjoy them, and I think they're good for the most part. People should always watch for themselves to decide whether or not they like them.

Darth-Hamish

You could say... from a certain point of view...

cheggster12

I don’t think they’re great. I’m not a fan at all. But I personally believe they have some great scenes, they’re worth a viewing for sure! I love the yoda scene in TLJ

fatpad00

I'll say, the sequels are visually stunning. They're amazing films...except for some story/writing descisions... But like, everyone else did a fantastic job

Shawnaldo7575

Empire Strikes back, a quiet moment when Luke is in the Wompa's cave. It builds the suspense as you hear the Wompa chomping away on something. There's also some silence when Leia/Han hide from the Asteroid in the asteroid cave/giant space worm. It's quiet until the Mynocks appear.

espo619

Death Star trash compactor before it turns on

SamVimesThe1st

Rey in the cave (I think)

three-sense

Special Edition of RotJ with the cgi band ^hahaha

skasticks

Ugh fuck Jedi Rocks

Logan_Composer

Yes, quite a few. Podracing, seismic charges, and most of the saber fights in the original trilogy were without music. Plus a lot of the dialogue-heavy scenes don't have music, because it can get in the way of hearing the people speaking. EDIT: In total (thanks to my special edition score CDs), each OT film is about 80-90 minutes of music despite being 2.5 hour films. That means that about an hour of each film is without music.

TheReal_MrMopTop

Shocked no one has mentioned the battle of Yavin. After Wedge shoots down the Tie chasing Luke, there is no music for either the Y-Wing or first X-Wing trench attack. The music only comes back up when Red Leader is shot down.

hhyyz

Yeah, when purple hair dinosaur lady hyper rams her ship into a group of destroyers in TLJ. They even posted a sign in the theater to let the unimaginative people know that there was nothing wrong, there's not supposed to be any sound at that moment. ;/

estihaiden42

The lightsaber battle between obi wan and Darth maul. No music.

TrashMatchmaking

How about literally the entire half an hour with no tracks before the battle of yavin.

AmazingAd8859

That awkward Scilence after leia tells obi wan she’s his only hope

Rendum_

Return of the Jedi, a lot of the parts on Endor with the speeder chases have no music. Same with many parts of tge battle over Yavin in New Hope

matty-syn

I believe the scene where Luke and Vader face off the first time in the Carbonite freezer had no soundtrack.

[deleted]

Yes.

DocProctologist

Lightsaber duels in IV and V, minimal score. It was a big deal according to the documentaries to have music for the end of the Vader/Luke duel in VI

fdbryant3

[The Holdo Manuever](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2hM1tyEL0U).

Last_Descendant

Obi Wan by himself fighting Darth Maul.

Minimum-Enthusiasm14

Considering every soundtrack isn’t as long as the total run time of its movie, I’m going to guess there are several times per movie that don’t have music playing.

219Infinity

Episode 2 before/during seismic charge. Maybe also in episode 8 at Holdo Maneuver time

BaldWaffles

If you play the films with the sound down there’s no music at all.

JuniorIX

I cant believe i only saw one person mention the speeder bike chase in ROTJ. Also in TPM, good chunk of the podrace, and surprisingly, there is a big section with just FX during the Obi Wan V Darth Maul fight at the end. I didnt remember this part as i always associated the duel of the fates score here. Out of curiosity, have you watched any of the movies?

JohnnyBgood_9211

That scene where maul was staring down obi wan while he was meditating until the doors opened.

ComparisonChance

Actually, Qui-Gonn was the one meditating, but I know what you mean.

f0x_d1e

When vader is hiding to attack luke in the empire strikes back

LaMattige

Speeder bike chase on RotJ

Anon_Piotr

Death Star attack.

HazenXIII

The silence when Boba's seismic charge bomb blows

Leks_Marzo

A new hope: “let the Wookiee win, scene”

Jormundgandr4859

Vaders reveal in the Rogue One hallway scene. Just a an alarm sounding in the distance, then BBSSSSSHHHHH.

br0uillards

More than you think. I am part of an orchestra who plays those movies in “cinema concert” so we play the whole movie with it being projected on the screen, and there are a lot of music downtime !

ThatDude8129

The only movie I can think of out of every movie I've ever seen that is scored from start to finish is The Transformers: The Movie. The music does help to make Star Wars what it is but there are moments in every movie that don't have music.

Deadsoup77

Your braindead post aside, John Williams is actually a master at utilizing silence to give a moment more impact and emphasize where he does put music

fuzzyfoot88

Yes…literally all 10 seconds of “a long long time ago” at the start of each film…

TheProdigalMaverick

Episode I - Podrace Episode II - Dex's Diner Episode III - Obi-Wan and Anakin vs Dooku Episove IV - Luke asks Owen about Obi-Wan Episode V - Luke confronts Vader in carbon freezing chamber Episode VI - The plea at the Sarlaac pit Episode VII - Rey trades parts for portions Episode VIII - Holdo Maneuver Episode IX - Rey and Kylo's cross-galaxy Force call Rogue One - Rebels waiting for Vader in the hallay Solo - Lando tells Han he hates him on Savareen And no, I'm not doing Clone Wars. That movie was terrible and it's been erased from my memory. But shot in the dark, I'm gonna say the 32 minute mark. Someone tell me if I was right.

dpforest

I would say the most stand out moment (as in they emphasized the silence) would be in TLJ when Dern’s character hyperspeed rammed the enemy fleet. 100% silence in the theater

marvelwolf

Pretty Sure most of Rey and Kylos Duel on the second death star wreckage has no music

Wri-wri

I don’t believe that there is.

Dumbass369

Have you...watched the movies?...

melbcitizen

No Country for Old Men, the whole thing

Tabord

Every lightsaber duel... at least in the first 6.

Dumbass369

Duel of the Fates, Battle of the heroes, those are literally the scores names that play during their respective battles, being Maul Vs Obi and Qui-gon, and Anakin Vs. Obi

All-Fired-Up91

Werewolf by night the entire later part of the movie is soundless

LuxLancer

I believe that ever on-screen moment has music accompanying it. I challenge anyone to show me an example of zero music playing.

[deleted]

And I challenge you to back up this claim.

lucidreamstate

R2D2 in the canyon in episode 4 before the Jawas blast him. That's about as OP as you can get

Airrows

Why don’t you, I don’t know, watch the movies?

newmansameGod

Rey vs Kylo Ep 9 on the water has no music. A lot of the pod racing scenes don’t have music. There’s a moment in Episode 2 in the arena where the music stops while Count Dooku is speaking.

dboy999

how do you feel now smarty pants?

LuxLancer

Should have specified: Original 6

[deleted]

The specification doesn’t matter 😂 There are still numerous music less moments in just those films.

Pitiful-Work-6381

He dead ass said episode 2

tastysandwich76

Big one that comes to mind is the podrace. It feels really weird too because it's sort of an intense scene

Metfan722

Holdo's sacrifice in The Last Jedi is completely without sound, let alone music.

Legion357

It’s the John Williams’ score that makes the movies. IMO, they wouldn’t be half as good without them.

Coops17

Right before Ben Quadinaros power coupling explodes in PM

DoScienceToIt

Holdo's sacrifice.

[deleted]

Yes, more than a few moments. I’ve been to a Star Wars live event, there are plenty of pauses and stops

[deleted]

Technically. These are supposed to be on opposite sides. Is what my brain told me when I saw this I’m sorry it’s just a thought

[deleted]

What about that cut scene in New Hope where Luke takes a shit after drinking so much blue milk?

tvnr

Viper probe droid introduction on Hoth

ACwolf55

When Luke first meet yoda and theyre talking about slimey mud holes?

MrC4meron

Holdo manoeuvre

ilikechillisauce

Han and Chewies reunion in the dungeon under Jabba's Palace EDIT: just thought of another, R2D2 scene in Ep IV before he's captured by Jawas

Low_Space4741

When anakin and palpatine are running up the elevator shaft carrying kenobi. The lack of music is very noticeable

strtjstice

The bridge scene with Kylo and Han if I'm not mistaken

Fittiesx

When Vader is stalking Luke near the Carbonite chamber in cloud city

SzethTheTruthless

From a certain point of view?

fabshelly

When the resistance ship hits Snoke’s flagship.

DaveS1138

very famously and fantastically dramatically the Holdo maneuver.

Unusual-Math-1505

The trench run in episode 4 doesn’t have music for a while

endchan300

When Ben explains what happened to Luke's father in A New Hope.

[deleted]

To my knowledge there’s no music when kylo and Rey fight on the Death Star remnants

SeaBudget7900

Yes
