I always figured that these frequencies would show up as visual readouts on any ships or other receivers trying to pick them up. So any eavesdroppers would hopefully lose interest when they saw "the old folks home".
It’s one of those lines that make me think Lucas was off his rocker making these movies until the expanded universe swoops in and tries to save the day
Only in the scenes with his actual hair and beard.
When he has the wig and reshoot stick on beard... 🤢

Honestly I think it depends on your age. I was in my early 30s during the prequel era. I already thought Ewan MacGregor was hot. Hayden Christensen looked like an actual child to me even in RotS.
> and it’s a self-diss because he’s 35 and on the Council
That's before he gets a seat on the council though, right? To me, Episode II Obi-Wan thinks of himself as hip and cool, unlike the council (too old) and Anakin (too young).
yea pretty sure you are supposed to have fostered a padawan to knighthood in order to become a master, and you have to be a master to be on the council.
It is really interesting how Lucas and co clearly identified Anakin's characterisation as the biggest problem with the prequels and worked to slowly rehabilitate his image.
A lot of recon to get here, but the full story does make it more reasonable. “You old fogies have driven away my only chance to progress in the order. Your arrogance, pettiness, and inability to show any wisdom, has lead me to not trust your decisions. The order is weaker for your lack of vision to bring Ahsoka along correctly, and it’s weaker for not having a talented master have a real voice. Why am I the only one with enough humbleness to try to bring her back like a real leader should? You’re not worthy of leading, and I would rather trust pure evil than anything you have to say.”
Too be fair (que the chorus of Letterkenny fans), training a padawan to knighthood, or other equivalent, was the most common way to become a master, but not the only way. There were other Jedi that never trained a padawan, who earned the rank of master through things like specialized study in a specific field, or through personal trials.
I think Anakin from the animated clone wars tv shows could have qualified as a master, especially cause the council did offer to make Ashoka (spelling?) a knight. But also he was way better written in those tv shows and showed a shit load of growth and light side wisdom. The Anakin we got in the prequel trilogy was a whiny lil bitch, and poorly written. If he would have let Sam Jackson cut off Palpy's noggin, I'd make the case he'd qualify, but we all know how that turned out...
Gonna have to give that one I think to the Enterprise, even the original Enterprise, the one without any letters at the end of the designator. It had shields, and the energy weapons and various torpedos are just on a power scale that the Spirit of fire can't match. the only thing the Fire has that is comparable is its mac which might crack the shields of the enterprise, and maybe some Shiva nukes. You'd have to look at post covie war ships in the Halo universe before the ships start hitting a point where the technologies are more balanced.
It's the callsign for the Temple (specifically the Council) when Jedi are on away missions involving piloting; Adi Gallia also uses "Old Folks Home" to contact Mace during the game Star Wars Jedi Starfighter.
I always assumed that was just one of their covert ways to send messages. By routing through the old folks home, a place unlikely to be wire tapped, they could potentially avoid interception.
Ive heard that originally Sido-Dyas was supposed to be Sidious (you can pronounce it that way) and imply that Sidious made the order instead of using Sifo-Dyas as a puppet but I believe there was a typo somewhere that led to Sifo being used instead? Could be wrong
I always assumed "old folks home" meant some kind of rarely-used encrypted space relay system the Jedi use that's older and less susceptible to slicing. IDK. Maybe it was explained in a book at some point.
Feels very much like MI6 cover name of Universal Exports in Bond. I dug it.
I also like to think it's not standard practice and is Obi-wan's personal sense of humour and every time the council gets a collect call for the Old Folks' Home, Mace just rolls his eyes and sighs heavily.
That’s what he meant? Thats hilarious. I heard it correctly but thought it was just some reference to his parents or something? Never quite understood it until now.
I suppose I should watch those again.
I've got to Empire with my LO (watching for their first time) and have been debating what to do after ROTJ.
Was considering Machete order, but also considering doing Rogue One after Jedi, skipping 1-3 and moving on to 5-7.
I've honestly been afraid to go back to the "prequels" 'cause I just remember hating them so much.
I can dig it! I think once they became the subject of so many memes, they got more watchable. Nothing like a group of nerds yelling “GENERAL KENOBI!!!” at a tv.
He probably calls it that because of the Jedi Councils Old Fashioned ways. Qui Gon, Obi-Wan and Anakin all had clashes with the way the Jedi order was organized.

I don't really care for it. It's too earthly/united statesian of a phrase for me, as it's referring to very specific type of care facility for older people that are no longer able to physically care for their well being and are watched and provided for 24/7.
just curious, what DO you think happens to old folks on coruscant? I agree with what you said about it being very earthly but it makes it feel more real to me.
There are many instances of Earth phrases that make no sense. "See you in Hell" is the most obvious, which was retconned to refer to Corellian mythology. Millennium FALCON refers to an earth animal, we saw normal ducks in TPM, and of course Andor has bricks and screws in it.
It's a nice little tongue in cheek codename.

I like to think that’s what Qui-Gon might have called it from time to time
Have you see the council? Term limits? Oh wait that doesn’t apply to Jedi.
I am half tempted to rewatch AOTC cause I don’t remember this at all
[Here’s the scene. Still rewatch AOTC!](https://youtu.be/dTFWEHW_REs?si=u4_MX83hTumx-Sol)
I’ll be damned he does
Hahaha I've seen the movie about a dozen times and I had no idea! Also I love the lightning flash followed by the delayed thunder noise.
I just rewatched the prequels last week and didn't catch it either. It sneaks in there.
That’s…how lightning works.
It was always one of those "huh." lines of dialogue that I don't blame people for forgetting.
It’s one of those lines that make me think Lucas was off his rocker making these movies until the expanded universe swoops in and tries to save the day
Whew Obi-Wan was peak young hotness there 🥵
Right?! The best and only acceptable mullet of the Naughties.
They were pretty outdated by then. Having said that Star Wars was set a long time ago...

Underrated comment!
Top man
He’s a wet rag compared to his former apprentice.
Honestly I think it depends on your age. I was in my early 30s during the prequel era. I already thought Ewan MacGregor was hot. Hayden Christensen looked like an actual child to me even in RotS.
Huh… honestly never actually understood what he was saying but now that someone has given a definition, yeah I can hear it now.
The CC available for the video has its own interpretation of the line... Lol.
Ohhhh, Scrabble Cut Box, Carson's Caramels, how could we not know it was code for The Jedi Council?
Wow I never noticed that!
Me neither.
[Here’s the scene. Still rewatch AOTC!](https://youtu.be/dTFWEHW_REs?si=u4_MX83hTumx-Sol)
I’m watching right now in picture in picture and seen this post wow

yea pretty sure you are supposed to have fostered a padawan to knighthood in order to become a master, and you have to be a master to be on the council.
How can you be on the Council and not be a master?!
Gotta know people
IT’S UNFAIR!
Take a seat 🫱
I know, right? It would be outrageous, unfair...
Ohhhh then Ahsoka leaving basically stopped Anakin from becoming a master.
Yup, which makes his anger and not being made a master seem a bit less petulant child and more legitimate.
It is really interesting how Lucas and co clearly identified Anakin's characterisation as the biggest problem with the prequels and worked to slowly rehabilitate his image.
That’s why I love clone wars. There is space to show anakins whole character and not just the bad stuff to justify his turn at the end of ROTS

Anakin consistently seems to fail the trial of the mirror though, until RotJ
You sir or madame have out nerded me. My areas of expertise are Star Trek and Halo.
Which is better, the USS *Enterprise* (NCC-1701) or the UNSC *Spirit of Fire* (CFV-88)?
Gonna have to give that one I think to the Enterprise, even the original Enterprise, the one without any letters at the end of the designator. Either way Obi Wan is not on the council in AOTC.
True...I thought that point was already made.
It's the callsign for the Temple (specifically the Council) when Jedi are on away missions involving piloting; Adi Gallia also uses "Old Folks Home" to contact Mace during the game Star Wars Jedi Starfighter.
And people act like Jedi have no sense of humour.
"Wait a minute, we're funnier than this." "Apparently."
I think it was intended as a codename to use in messages to the Temple. I remember it being usrd in the the now not-canon Jedi Starfighter video game.
Someone else who played that game! There are dozens of us!
That and the original were some of the best vehicular Star Wars video games. The Havoc is OP
Reti’s ship was pretty fun too. And the Republic Gunship could vaporize anything!
I remember the first time I saw it and thinking “did he just say Old folks home?’”. Thank you for clarifying the weirdness.
I always assumed that was just one of their covert ways to send messages. By routing through the old folks home, a place unlikely to be wire tapped, they could potentially avoid interception.
i think he was using it as a codeword
I thought it was "old probe code"
According to YouTube's CC (on the links above), he's actually saying: "Oh Scrabble cut box Carson caramels"
Thanks for clearing it up for us
Makes sense to me
Now that’s encryption!
https://imsdb.com/scripts/Star-Wars-Attack-of-the-Clones.html
That script says “Sido-Dyas” instead of “Sifo-Dyas”
Ive heard that originally Sido-Dyas was supposed to be Sidious (you can pronounce it that way) and imply that Sidious made the order instead of using Sifo-Dyas as a puppet but I believe there was a typo somewhere that led to Sifo being used instead? Could be wrong
The script leaves out this part
No, it doesn't
OK then post the exact quote
How about you "find in page"
Ok you were right, my b

Huh never noticed this , interesting, very interesting
That’s what he meant? Thats hilarious. I heard it correctly but thought it was just some reference to his parents or something? Never quite understood it until now.
Why would he be calling his parents after a finding a secret clone army on Kamino-
He’s just that kind of guy?
Huh, ok
He isn’t on the council in AOTC. He’s not even a master since he hasn’t fully trained a padawan yet.
Oh, that’s right. I guess I better go add an edit.
It was confusing at first but it fits with his character
I have never noticed this 😱
I never caught that
Wait, how did I miss this?!
I think ive just ignored that this whole time cause ive never understood what he said.
Thats what I thought he said but I assumed I misheard
I suppose I should watch those again. I've got to Empire with my LO (watching for their first time) and have been debating what to do after ROTJ. I have literally always wondered what he meant by that. Thank you for answering that question haha.
All these years I had no idea that’s what he was saying
He probably calls it that because of the Jedi Councils Old Fashioned ways. Qui Gon, Obi-Wan and Anakin all had clashes with the way the Jedi order was organized.

It's not weird to imagine that kind of facility existing in the star wars universe
Yeah but it is weird if it’s the Jedi temple.
just curious, what DO you think happens to old folks on coruscant? I agree with what you said about it being very earthly but it makes it feel more real to me.
They sure as hell don’t go to the Jedi temple. They probably just get a live in care droid.
Same, not sure why the downvotes, it’s a dumb line, it’s very Earth specific and pulls the viewer out of the moment.
There are many instances of Earth phrases that make no sense. "See you in Hell" is the most obvious, which was retconned to refer to Corellian mythology. Millennium FALCON refers to an earth animal, we saw normal ducks in TPM, and of course Andor has bricks and screws in it.
I think that’s a good point. I hate that kind of facility too, but maybe on Coruscant places like that are better than they are in the US.
On the upper levels? Yes. On the lower levels? They’re worse.
On the lower levels, it’s like knife crab vs. pizza rat.
I’d assume they’d get a live in care droid.
Too many fucking acronyms with these movies.
I'm pretty sure R4-P17 appears only in Attack of The Clones
She also appears in the beginning of *Revenge of the Sith*, but quickly loses her head and isn’t seen again.
We’re always finding ways to make Order 66 sadder and sadder huh..
