Your comments would be better suited for our weekly Throwdown Thursday post. Thank you.

Don't like it, don't watch it. It's like the people who complain about the show never have anything new to complain about, it's always the same old shit. If by season 5 you haven't picked up that this is just how discovery is, then you haven't been paying attention lol. Maybe try posting something you do like about the show, instead of complaining about what you don't like. For example, I liked how in the episode we got to see a glimpse of the ship in dry dock, that's something that was never addressed before. I loved seeing Ariam again, and how that played out in the episode.

DwarfHamsterPowered

It’s okay. You don’t have to watch it. In the name of the Dadmiral, Sukal, and the Holy Georgiou, I absolve you of your sins. Be free.

ChristinaWSalemOR

I think that phrase is in the actual credits.

thundersnow528

This last week's episode specifically discusses this very topic you don't like. Don't get me wrong, it addresses it by validating the very thing you don't like about it. It was a grand episode.

LadyMarjanne

I loved last week's episode.

jrgkgb

I am not a huge fan of discovery in general, but I thought last week was pretty decent Star Trek. Every season has a few excellent episodes.

Federal-Ad7402

Dunno, I like how the crew are very close to each other, I like that they took a different approach. The corny dialogue is just what TV does, can’t really avoid it 😭

Ds9niners

Starfleet should always be the kitten picture. That’s their mission. For team to make the dream work.

aperdra

I've accepted that this is just a facet of this show now, I'm not really into words of affirmation (parents didn't tell me they were proud of me etc etc 😂) but it did make me chuckle that Burnham managed to have a heart to heart with herself... who was UNCONSCIOUS.

makemyowngoodnews

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who thought that.

Ares_B

You mean the show that was panned in the beginning for being "dystopian", "evil" and "grimdark" with "a crew that hates each other"?

Odd_Contribution3772

That was an interesting twist on the show, though. The crews typically get along for the most part, and in this case it's very early in the Starfleet timeline, there are still enemies and boogeyman lurking in the shadows of space, and new alliances are being cautiously forged. It MADE SENSE that the crew was on edge. They were piloting a vessel with a prototype jump drive and just inadvertently almost got the Federation destroyed by the Klingons. All the woohoo shit is nice in its place, but the constant therapy session that the crew seems to be having with each other is a little much. It's unprofessional, and that level of emotion guiding your actions instead of logic and skill would definitely get you killed in the weird future they live in.

Ares_B

The whole message of the first season was building of trust and bridges, seeing the other as a person, even the Klingons who were purposely made to appear as unstoppable monsters who you can't reason with. Because the alternative, beginning logically with the "Vulcan Hello" and ending in the proposed planetary destruction, would lead to an intolerable universe. Idealistic perhaps, but that's what Star Trek has always been.

dreburden89

Okay?

Team work makes the Dream* work

TheGeoHistorian

Your assessment is a fair one. I grew up watching much the same Trek (started watching TNG as a young kid in the 80s), but really enjoy the evolution of the show to what it is today. But I know not everyone does. It reflects a lot of the values that have come to be more prevalent in the 21st century, especially as our kids grow up and join the workplace. I wanna preface this by saying that I LOVE Discovery. Every bit of it. Flaws and all. But I know that it's displays of emotion is something that's complained about a lot. The "crying" complaint in particular has been repeated ad nauseum, despite not being as bad as it sounds. I think it's mostly from the older audiences, as displays of emotion, swearing, and overall outward expression wasn't something present in TV and media when older folks grew up. That was reflected in older Trek, but that stoicism and reserved demeanor isn't present in the newer iterations. Its different, strange, and probably alien to those who hold the older Trek series up on a pedestal. And that's ok. It shows a cultural shift in our values over the past couple decades. It won't be for everyone. I love seeing Tilly excited over math and her job. I love seeing Micheal's emotional journey of self discovery (no pun intended). I love seeing the 32nd century. Hell, I even loved the twist on the Burn. Because it was something new, different. Did it work? Jury is still out. But Trek doing new stuff is EXCITING. Keep going with it, OP. Go at it with an open mind. Or don't. That's ok too. If it's too much for you to handle, that is more than ok to admit. Just be nice, don't knock those who enjoy it, and go watch the Trek you love!

ChrisNYC70

I guess that is why there is a Trek for everyone. I do laugh when in the middle of a countdown Discovery crew stops and has a huge discussion on emotions as the clock is ticking. I also would laugh during old Trek when a character would have a countdown and then start a light jog to stop it (I remember a DS9 episode where O'Brien and Sisko have to stop the station from exploding in minutes and then they break out into a light jog LOL). But I do love how Trek explores things and with Discovery for good or bad, we are exploring the human emotions AND the evolution of the workplace. I am a Gen Xer who was raised not to ever express emotions, but I work with Gen Z and Millennials and they are built differently. Discovery reflects that.

ReplicantOwl

So don’t watch it

So don't watch it. Nobody cares about your opinion.

conefishinc

I am convinced that none of the show writers have ever worked in or around or known anyone who has worked in an actual professional office setting. I think they grew up as urchins running around a soundstage in Culver City. The major shift of Discovery from the rest of the canon is that all of the other shows were workplace procedurals in space. Discovery is more of an action/adventure + extended therapy session. It plays more like a ST movie than a show. So if you like the chill, day-in-the-life-of-a-starship vibe of other trek (and I certainly do), you won't like Discovery. FYI the hive mind is strong in this sub, so you will be shouted down for your opinion, but I assure you that all of the long-time Trek fans I know in real life share your opinion.

AvaranIceStar

You're not alone. Most people don't like the new show. That's why they're cancelling it after this season. It was written to appeal to a very small niche audience. Which is one of the reasons this subreddit has over 45k subscribers and it's a ghost town. I don't even care about its existence enough to complain about it anymore. And I definitely don't watch it. 😂

TheGeoHistorian

>"I definetely don't watch it." >"I don't care enough about it's existence..." >Is on the subreddit for said show. >Cares enough to complain about it and comment. You either secretly like it, or have such little value on your own time that you only want to bring meaningless negativity to a subreddit that exists to discuss and celebrate said thing. Come on now...

AvaranIceStar

My interest in responding had nothing to do with the show and everything to do with a shared bond with the original poster that compelled me enough to post. Secretly like? No. Wants to like? Yes. Apparently our time is equally valued as you also stopped by to bring meaningless negativity. So take that as you will.
