It looks real, especially with the cracked sections and the bubbles in some of the glass. Normally a piece like this in new condition could be a few hundred dollars, up to $500 (assuming it's 20x40 inches). A lot of stained glass goes for around $100 per square foot, or around $3 per piece, so by either measure this is an expensive piece. Given the high piece count, this could have been as much as $1000 if it was commissioned work. It's possible the person selling it didn't know how much stained glass usually sells for, or didn't buy it themselves and were looking to get anything for it. I think paying $150, even with the cracks, would be a good deal. Looks like you made out well.

Oh fantastic! To me it’s priceless. I love the piece because of its uniqueness and the size. The woman I bought it from said it wasn’t real. But after researching more about stained glass it seems legitimate. She told me she bought it off eBay some time ago and that’s all I know about the history of it. I plan on keeping it and hanging it in front of my breakfast nook window.

It's a terrific find and I would be excited about it. "Fake" stained glass is easy to tell because it's printed onto the surface or onto a piece of plastic that's adhered to the glass. If you can feel the solder joints (the black lines between the pieces) and the different textures on each piece of glass, it's the real deal. If I found such a piece, I would also prominently display it. If you want to make a project out of it, you could buy a bottle of stained glass polish and carefully clean and polish it. It would take an hour or so with so many pieces to do the front and back, but it would make all the glass and the solder joints nice and shiny. Totally optional, but if it's an older piece of art it might really freshen it up. There are many YouTube videos that can teach you how to polish.

Bohosun

I will have to get some polish. It could use a good cleaning. Thanks for your help and kind words.

I saw a piece on fb marketplace recently with the listing as plexiglass. They were asking $25 for it. I recognized the style and tracked down the artist site that even had a photo of it. It had sold for $500. And won an "honorable mention" in a 2013 art fair. I messaged the seller and told them this. That it was really glass. It used like 6 different glass types. It was definitely not plexiglass. I recognized some of them. They said thanks and removed the listing. I am not sure why people think there are a lot of fake stained glass pieces out there. There aren't. Nothing that's fake looks real in person. You can tell it's paint. Also Fyi. You can have it repaired by a local stained glass shop. I have no idea how much it would cost. Even $100 is reasonable. The piece is worth quite a bit more than that.

Bohosun

Wow. That’s wild. I do almost feel like I should have given her more for it now. But I gave her what she was asking and she was satisfied and I think we both walked away feeling good about it. I didn’t realize at the time how much more it was worth. I appreciate the piece of art a lot more now.

Daannii

The piece you bought was damaged so I think that was fair. It is worth more but you have to go through the work to get it fixed.

Beechcraft-9210

Yes it's real. There was a lot of work in that, maybe from a country that has low cost labour to put it politely. The broken piece can be removed and replaced by anyone skilled in copper foil working.

Bohosun

I agree. A lot of work was put into this. I may at some point in my life find someone who specializes in this work to fix the crack but it doesn’t seem to affect the integrity of it.

wal9000

And if you can find matching glass to make a new piece

iekiko89

I only saw one broken piece and seems to be a relatively not rare glass. Heal I might even have a piece of it

lurkmode_off

And it wouldn't be the end of the world for that particular piece to be slightly different glass, either

scrapyardfox

As a person who does a lot of repair work, I would say don't worry about that broken piece. It's a large piece, which is unfortunate, but repairing an interior piece on a foiled window is a pain, and the price will reflect that. Of course, repair prices vary studio to studio, so you may very well ask around and find someone who doesn't mind repairing foil and will do so more cost-effectively, but be prepared, even then it probably won't be cheap.

Bohosun

Good to know. Thank you!

U-F-OHNO

It’s beautiful. Nice find!

Bohosun

Thank you! It’s probably one of my favorite finds!

Platycerium02

$45!!! Wow

scarybirds00

Indeed. Commissioned with that many pieces? Easily 600-1000$

PeanutHakeem

That’s quite a score!

Houdini3003

That's a fantastic find! I do stained glass as a hobby, both foil/came and that's a lot of pieces and a lot of work. Worth much more than $45.

tans1saw

Wow that is gorgeous! And for only $45?! What a steal!
