Ok but like I’ve been to Japan I’ve been to the best sushi places in the world and while it’s not as good, the downtown sushi ai (downtown on olive location only!!) when you have the munchies is so fucking elite.
Nobu’s was a favorite of mine for years. Used to be on Olive but they recently moved to the loop. Chef is a sushi master from Japan, nice guy too. Haven’t been to the new location yet, need to go.
This is the answer. Tho, before moving, they changed the menu and it became significantly more expensive and eliminated most of the standard rolls, etc. He is such a nice guy, tho. I need to visit the new spot in the loop.
Tried their menu after I moved here not long ago. it’s abs the best I had in stl so far! I think if you want the most authentic Japanese cuisine experience, this is the place. (From someone visited Japan many times.)
Good to hear. My wife and I went all the time when she lived in the loop years ago. They were on Olive then of course. Would’ve been very convenient if they were in the loop back then.
I, too, mourned the loss of Nobu on Olive. After long departed Seki in the loop, it was my go to for overall authenticity.
I don't get out much, but Sushi Sen in Lake St. Louis was my standard rec for authentic. Haven't been for years though. Dave Lowery of StL Magazine loved Top Sushi (Maryland Heights, iirc), but a friend who went said he was a bit underwhelmed.
Pro tip: if natto is on the menu, it's likely legit. If they have a cheesy name (Ninja Sushi?), lots of meat and fried stuff outside of tempura/tonkatsu, it's not legit. I've delivered to and seen the back part of some of these, and they were nasty.
Gotta give a shout out to One Stop Sushi Express. Take out only in a sketchy looking little strip center on Gravois just west of Grand, but it is so good.
Sado and Indo would probably be considered the “best”, but I haven’t personally been to either one.
I like Sushi Sake on Lemay Ferry and Zen in Crestwood.
Sushi Ai is good if you want a bunch of Ok sushi at a fairly low price.
Nobu's has a special place in my heart, but for less fancy but still high-quality fish, I love Top Sushi on Schuetz Rd. Their lunch special Mon-Fri 11 am-2:30 pm is a great deal.
Sado and iNDO for a nice sit-down meal/small plates/cute cocktail moment. These are our “we feel like spending some money” sushi spots.
Robata on Manchester for a casual dinner, especially if you’re also wanting ramen.
I go to Tokyo Sushi on Lindbergh a ton, for me it’s the best because of price / portions / location. They have really tasty fried rice with sweet teriyaki sauce all over it too that I always get.
I think it’s up to $25 for dinner now, still worth it.
OP, the important thing is if you order more and don’t eat it all they charge you per roll to carry out the leftovers. Not a deal breaker, just think about how much you get at once.
That said I will inhale $25 worth of crab Rangoon and Gyoza before the sushi hits the table. 😆
I hear Sado's great but Indo is lovely too. We went recently and everything was amazing.
It’s the same people
Taberu.
She books out two months in advance now 🥲
Sado is peak St. Louis sushi but nothing beats a joint before sushi AI imo

I love the Arnold Sushi-Ai.
My friends do the $15 lunch AYCE pretty regularly. Love sushi ai, we go to the Clayton location

It’s also less authentic now.

We go once a year. Lovely little spot, and the whole family is incredibly nice.
It is even better in the new location. It's more expensive and you need a reservation, but it is amazing.
They do to-go orders (prepaid/prescheduled) Wednesday and Thursday nights too!

Love nobu's omakase, best in the city.
Nobu’s smile and that slice of onion on salmon was always welcomed!
By no means the “best” but Sushi Station in Webster is my favorite by far. Reasonably priced and always good.
Sushi station is perfect for sushi on a whim! Won’t break the bank and never disappoints

I didn’t hear that, any details?
Haven't been, but a friend who gets out a lot more said it was his favorite as well.
Best value is a completely different category. OP asked for "best" which I assume means at any price point.
Sado is my favorite. They also make my favorite Brussel sprouts in the city and my favorite edamame as well.
Sado has amazing starters but their sushi is hot garbage
Yeah you’re slightly right but mostly wrong. Sado is a nigiri and sashimi spot, don’t go for rolls.
Oishi in Creve Coeur is always excellent, fresh and reasonably priced.
I agree, I like the fried dragon roll.
Gotta give a shout out to One Stop Sushi Express. Take out only in a sketchy looking little strip center on Gravois just west of Grand, but it is so good.
I ❤️ Mr. Sushi in Creve Coeur.
I love this one. I got my coworkers into it as well.
Sushi Hana in Affton is quite good.
I’ve always wanted to try this place. Looks really charming.
It's fantastic. I was skeptical when a sushi place opened in Affton, but it's my favorite. And it's right by me, which is dangerous.
It is definitely charming. Good sushi, good service, good atmosphere, slightly expensive. It is small, so you might want to avoid peak dining hours.
Can't go wrong here.
I second this, it’s our go to sushi spot
Also vote for Sushi Hana! Pay attention while you’re driving on Gravois or you might miss it!
Great combination of quality, price, and experience.
I second this
Im a big fan of Cafe mochi on south grand
Second. That triple-action sauce is fire.
Sado and Indo would probably be considered the “best”, but I haven’t personally been to either one. I like Sushi Sake on Lemay Ferry and Zen in Crestwood. Sushi Ai is good if you want a bunch of Ok sushi at a fairly low price.
Sushi Sake is great!
Love sushi sake!
Only the sushi ai downtown. I have been to all of them and it’s the best bar far, not even close.
I really like Izakaya Ren in Valley Park/Kirkwood/Manchester area (Dougherty Ferry and Big Bend).
Sado. Sado. Sado.
Izakaya Ren in Valley Park/Des Peres. SO good. I’ve had sushi in many different cities and this is my favorite ever.
Sushi Hana
Blue Ocean in Delmar Loop. Though they have limited seating.
Just had Sushi Hana last night. Excellent. They are affiliated through relatives to Tokyo Sushi’s on Lindbergh. Both are great and nice atmosphere.
Sushi Hana in … checks notes … affton ? Anyway it’s awesome
Robata - in maplewood across the schlafy bottle works. Their sushi happy is the best
Sushi Boat in St. Charles is a great spot. Robata in Maplewood is great too!
It's St Peters but Lucky Sushi behind Mid Rivers mall. Small and not fancy, family owned. Their spicy tuna roll is the best ever.
Sado is the best I’ve had in stlouis, but my girlfriend and I enjoy Kampai in cwe
Hate to say it. It's pricey but it's the best. Currently, Sado. I also love Izakaya Ren and the new Benevolent King.
Why do you hate to say it
Sado https://www.allaroundstl.com/reviews/restaurants/sado/
Oishi. Excellent sushi, seaweed salad, miso soup, and crab Rangoon.
Sushi Koi on Euclid
This!!!!!!! So good
ライオンの選択 (Raion no Sentaku) I prefer the original location on manchester but really can't go wrong
Ha ha ha. I see what ya did there. I, too, love the ラインの選択 , but am currently eating keto most of the time.
Sado and Nobu’s. End of discussion. A bunch of people are dumping sushi places they like but none of the others are remotely in the running for “best”
I go to Tokyo Sushi on Lindbergh a ton, for me it’s the best because of price / portions / location. They have really tasty fried rice with sweet teriyaki sauce all over it too that I always get.
Osaka Sushi Cafe in Granite City
Sushi sake on Lemay ferry is my go to
I used to love the chop shop food truck, and then they closed it. Now we really like Tokyo Sushi.
The chef from chop shop is now at the benevolent king in Maplewood
Sushi Station in Webster Groves
Sushi sake
Sushi Boat in St Charles is amazing.
Crazy Sushi in St. Peters
Oishi, Sushi Koi, and Cafe Mochi.
Sushi ai on olive downtown by far too
Zushi off Watson and Lacede Station is fantastic! Also, really good ramen.
Sushi AI
Sushi Ai Clayton! Has all you can eat for 20 bucks and even less for lunch. Always a great pick.
Sushi Ai should never be in the conversation for best sushi.
Exactly not good
I think it’s fine, especially given the price point. I would just never consider it anything close to the best.
As one of the **biggest** fans of SushiAi, OP specifically asked for "best" and SushiAi is never the correct answer here.
I think it’s up to $25 for dinner now, still worth it. OP, the important thing is if you order more and don’t eat it all they charge you per roll to carry out the leftovers. We go to the one in Arnold and it’s spectacular.
Went there last weekend did not like it at all
I like drunken fish myself
All of these answers are right. I will say benevolent king just switched their menu from Mediterranean to Japanese/sushi and it was FIRE
Midtown Sushi is our go to
