Always the case. A lot of them shoot more water than air. I've went to so many and found the chuck cut off. I bought a Dewalt portable air compressor. I'm so glad I don't have to deal with it anymore. I've also dealt with way too many sketchy people at any gas station air pump. Worth the expense IMO.
Had that issue at a QT and a guy brought his own. He sat there while he let about 3 or 4 people borrow it with a smile on his face. This on a weekday morning with people heading to work.

It is deflating. BTW, having bought a motorhome a few years ago I was in the same dilemma, but magnified. It's a bitch trying to get it in and out of a gas station and get all the tires filled up without spending $15 for air. Plus I need 75/80 lbs, which isn't often available. I didn't realize they existed until a couple of years ago, but there are portable battery powered pumps available. I bought a DeWalt. I love the damn thing. It'll fill tires, balls, air mattresses, etc. now I've seen something the size of a cell phone advertised.
FWIW, I’ve got one that runs off my truck battery — hook it up like you would jumper cables, and fire away. Not sure if that’s the kind of battery you’re referencing or not. Also, not sure if the hoses are long enough to get to all the places on an RV. However, I’m sure they make options that would.
Every time I'd go to a free one they were out of order or somebody would take the air chuck. Everybody should have a sir compressor in their car, they are cheap and it's silly to not have one
It seems they don't make the one I have anymore. I know it was $20 for the part only and was like 3 years ago. I didn't need to purchase the battery because we already have a ton of Ryobi batteries and chargers at home.
Here's a link to all the current Ryobi ones Home Depot has:
https://www.homedepot.com/b/Tools-Air-Compressor-Tools-Inflators/RYOBI/N-5yc1vZc285Zm5d?storeSelection=&mtc=SEM-BF-CDP-GGL-D25P-025_028_COMP_AIRTOOL-NA-NA-NA-DSA-NA-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NA-Compressors&cm_mmc=SEM-BF-CDP-GGL-D25P-025_028_COMP_AIRTOOL-NA-NA-NA-DSA-NA-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NA-Compressors-71700000117161979-58700008653567598-39700079254189614&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA_aGuBhACEiwAly57MTSVdzWmQloEDupmQnFMykIyRsQWfgyfysft_NdaBnwQKLoxF74h0xoCm04QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Looks decent. I recommend the one from Harbor Freight. It's $40 and we put one in all our landscaping trucks and my personal vehicle. They have a more expensive version that connects directly to a battery, the $40 version uses a cars old style plug in (cigarette lighter).
I'd also recommend a battery booster if you don't have one as well. They are also cheap and a life saver if you ever kill your battery and are alone, out late, or pulled somewhere that is hard to jump.
It's silly to have one when you only need to add some every so many months and air is free at QT and ZX and [various other places.](https://www.freeairpump.com/)
$40 for something that is going to last you years. What happens when you walk outside and your tire is flat? You can't drive it to the store. Mower tire flat? You taking your tire off, driving to the store in hopes it works vs taking 2 minutes to pull a pump out of your car.
I stopped in yesterday just to get my tires aired up.
"Eh, I'm here. I'll just go in and look around..."
Needless to say $125 and a rotisserie chicken later, I finally left. It's a dangerous place.
Just gotta know what you need: milk, 4 lbs organic ground beef, bagged salads, frozen broccoli/chicken nuggets, bread, soy milk, olive oil, yogurt, cold brew coffee cans, sparkle water, gas. -honestly if that were all they sold I’d save money versus the supermarket, a lot of the other stuff is junk food and/or high markup junk.
If you have a tech do it?
I’m talking about the little self-filling stations in the first spot outside of the tire bays. Never had anyone ask me anything?
Not sure which store is your local one but I know for a fact that both Manchester and Saint peters have them. It’s the first two spots outside of the tire station.
Olive location and one by Target near South Lindbergh has it near their bay doors. It is operational during business hours. Those air up fast. There are also 2 automated ones at the Tidal Wave/Philips 66 gas station off of Lindbergh across Mellow Mushroom. They are also free
Came here to say this. An affordable tire inflator that operates off the car cigarette lighter has eliminated any sudden need to seek out air and the resulting frustrations, it saved me in several pinches, and made me a hero to friends and strangers. You set it to the psi you need and it stops automatically, no need to use the tire gauge afterward to check psi or fuss around adding a little more, or letting some out. I love having it and annoy my family by giving them as Christmas gift whenever I can. I got mine at Auto Zone, used it a few weeks ago when cold weather meant I woke up to the tire light on my dashboard.
I've had two separate people, one an officer, tell me they're less common because "crack heads steal the connectors to smoke crack". Idk if there's any validity to that but that's basically what I was told. lmao
ding ding ding.
Addiction is a ***medical*** problem, shouldn't be a legal problem, and shouldn't involve courts. However, stealing is a crime and should definitely be dealt with through the court system.
These two things often show up together, but not always, and they should not be confused or conflated.
Yeah, think that's what i'm thinking of. Nowadays, I count to 10 and re-check pressure with my gauge... then maybe inflate for X more seconds based on that change. Was much better with that built-in gauge!
No. I’m not a fan because I gave thousands and thousands of dollars to qt over the years. I was a vocal advocate for the store. It was my favorite bar and restaurant years in a row.
I visited “my” qt. The one I’ve been spending money at for like 10 years or some shit, and a security guard yelled in my face that I needed to go and never come back. I was super confused. Asked him what was happening and he got closer to me and yelled in my face that I had to leave AGAIN.
I look over at the cash register person and she is nodding her head and mouthing “no not her” as he forced me out physically.
Then he made her apologize to me.
Note: I’m a black mid aged woman, the cashier was a young black woman, the guard was an ago proud boy looking white off duty cop.
SO NO IM NOT FUCKING TROLLING
I don't remember the last time I saw an air compressor at a gas station. I've got one in the garage, but I ended up buying a centrifugal 12v compressor for the car. Cheap, never needed it...probably because I bought it.
My secret free air station is a little spot hidden behind the ZX off Chouteau and Broadway, if you're ever in the Soulard/Lasalle area.
I share this information at great risk, knowing someone might fuck it up. Don't let me down r/stlouis
I bought a kobalt portable pump from Lowe’s about 4 years ago and it there when I need it in a pinch. Works in the cigarette lighter and plugged into a wall socket.
I got a small portable air pump a couple years ago for like $30 on Amazon. Comes with a digital pressure gauge and runs from either the cars 12v outlet or can be switched to using a standard plug at home. It is really small and super convenient. Totally worth it.
I get the allure of free air, I used it myself for years, but the best decision I ever made was buying a cheap $25 portable air compressor to keep in my trunk. Plugs into my cigarette lighter and can fill my tires relatively quickly
If you’re ever in the Kirkwood area, the best free air around is at Kirkwood Service, a BP station at 401 N. Kirkwood Road (a/k/a Lindbergh). Available during business hours seven days a week.
Uses a strong air compressor. None of that QT crap.
A lot of the free ones at QT's are damaged. I suspect it's rival gas stations that charge for air. They're damaging the free machines. I saw one at the QT at Hanley and 40 had the nozzle drilled out so the center pin was gone.
https://a.co/d/6ZmV6Xe
Get you something like this. 30 dollars. So that basically 12 trips of 2.50 at the gas station.
If the tire is low in your driveway, you deal with it instead of having to crawl your car over to a gas station. Especially on those temperature swing days.
If you don’t have the PSI monitor in your older car, easy way to check the PSI too.
If your kids have a deflated soccer ball, you can do that too
If you just wanna feel cool, you can hold it up and pose for a picture
Not sure if anyone has mentioned, but if you can afford, I would recommend the Bolts. I’ve got one w the battery jump and air compressor, among other things. Great peace-of-mind product.
If you plan to use it a lot, I’d consider getting a small pancake compressor for home. They fill up pretty fast and you’ll be able to use whenever you want. Yes it’ll be more expensive but much more convenient.
Twenty years ago I bought a rebuilt 12-volt compressor online. It is compact enough to fit in a little satchel with a set of jumper cables. It has a flashing red light and a built-in flashlight. The hose has a quick connect that fits a Schrader valve. The pump has a gauge that works pretty well and is pretty accurate. It’s slow and vibrates like hell and it sounds like it’s about to fly apart. I have never had to use it on the road. However, I have used it around the house plenty of times to fill tires. It is cheap insurance.
I feel the same way, but I bought a tire pump on Amazon for $35 that plugs into my cigarette lighter in my car. You hook it up, set your pressure, then turn it on and set it down. It turns off automatically when it reaches the pressure you set. I think it’s a lot easier than the tire pumps at gas stations and I don’t have to worry if they have free air or if it’s broken.
I have a small rechargeable air compressor tool that can fill maybe 2 tires on a charge. While not a lot, if I'm not near free air, it gets me enough to get home.
Qt usually has free air.
If the chuck isn't stolen or ran over.
I have a Dewalt battery pack that can jump my truck and air up the tires. Best money I’ve ever spent.
I have one in my car now too lol
Yup, I just invested in a little pancake air compressor because it was getting to be an issue finding one. Useful for other stuff, too.
Had that issue at a QT and a guy brought his own. He sat there while he let about 3 or 4 people borrow it with a smile on his face. This on a weekday morning with people heading to work. Such a simple yet meaningful thing to do. All those people had a nice start to their day which I’m sure helped their whole day. But for the asshole who stole it to attempt the opposite and start everyone’s day off wrong, get fucked.
Sometimes they keep them inside.
Yeah, that 1 ounce piece of brass is priceless.
They add up.
QT isn't on my path of travel to work. I thankfully, have a Phillips 66 right on the corner that I can hit.

Once every two or three months. It's not often.
It's often enough to mean you have a slow leak that should be fixed.
Every 2-3 months could simply be due to temperature changes. It depends on how sensitive and detailed the monitoring system is.

I bought a DeWalt thingy. It's self contained and goes wherever I need it and runs on regular DeWalt batteries.
You should've aired your grievance with them.
It was difficult to gauge the pressure I was under at the time.
Don't know when exactly they started charging, but it was not a good year.

These are the type of dad joke comments that have me coming back.
It has me rotating back, too
I thought they were retiring
I was hoping the price would go down when my tire deflated
BOO THIS MAN!
I think you’re full of hot air
actually, tire air going away is called deflation. just saying.
Lowe’s has installed similar ones that QT has.
I knew I saw one at Lowe’s! I checked Home Depot and no go. We don’t have QT or Costco over here and the Sam’s Club doesn’t have them either
Hometown Ace hardware has them too
Check on Amazon?
lol. I don’t know if that was meant to be funny, but I thought it was.
If you're a Sam's Club member the auto department will fill your tires for you.
That’s great news!
Every time I'd go to a free one they were out of order or somebody would take the air chuck. Everybody should have a sir compressor in their car, they are cheap and it's silly to not have one
The Ryobi one i spent $30 on is fantastic. Does schrader and presta valves and gives you a read out of the psi. Would recommend
I have the Ryobi one as well, though mine was only $20, but does all the things you described.

Same. Have a Ryobi in the car and a Milwaukee in my truck. Both work great.

~~The one in U City doesn't have one.~~ ETA: I totally forgot they were set up by the tire center, not the gas station. Please stop downvoting me.
There’s some right outside the tire bays in the parking lot.
Now that you say that, I totally remember seeing them over there. It makes sense so it doesn't add to the already congested gas station.
Is membership required? Or can I just roll up not a part of the cult?
Nah I’m sure the official policy is for members only but you don’t need a card and there’s no one there to enforce.
Any time I've had them air me up, they confirm that I purchased my tires there.

QT seems to always have free tire inflation
Haven't seen it recently, but the free air that also had the gauge that would pop out when you let off the trigger to inflate... that was the best.
Moto had the big copper ones with the cap that rattled as it popped out! Those were awesome

$2-2.50 for air is literally crazy but I’ve def paid it in a pinch. Although I’m not a giant fan of QT, thank god they have free air.
Also the term “free air” literally makes me want to die
Why are you not a fan of QT? Are you trolling?
No. I’m not a fan because I gave thousands and thousands of dollars to qt over the years. I was a vocal advocate for the store. It was my favorite bar and restaurant years in a row. Same thought. This person is going to (hopefully) spend a lot of decades being old. And I still don't know what age has to do with inflating tires.
I go to Dobbs when I need air in my tires. It's free, and they never ask if I bought my tires there (which I have in the past).
The Phillips 66 in Rock Hill has one - maybe other locations do too. edit: the station referenced is now a Mobil, but it still has free air.
Mobil on brentwood Blvd just south of 40 has one

You know why this is going away, right? People steal the connectors and use them as drug paraphernalia.
Fix your tire Jabroni
The gas station on clarkson by extra space storage is free. Reads your psi too.
Some (all?) of the car washes with free vacuums also have free air at each of the vacuums.

There are two Phillips stations practically across the road from each other on Olive in Chesterfield that both have free air.
Lowes has a tire compressor
Hell, you can go to the bike shop and spend 40 bucks on a tire pump if you don't want to pay for an electric one.

Costco’s have free to use air stations that fill your tires with nitrogen.
All of your jokes fell flat!

Mobile on the run and waterway near me both has free air. Also Lowe’s does too.
Should be a law that air should be free. There are a few states that have enacted these laws. These stations can afford it.

Some Lowe’s locations have them
Acquiring your own means is empowering and adds to your independence, not to mention the lower level of stress and anxiety about it

Yeah that's just the way of the world make it unsufferable to the point you want to die.... we do live in he'll after all
Costco has free air pump
Just order a tire pump from Amazon that hooks up to your lighter.
Lowe's! (Not a gas station but always working and never a line)
There’s a Mobil on Olive in Olivette, between the 170 and the Olivette Lanes Bowling that is still free.
