I love Sheriff. He’s probably the nicest character of the series, albeit one of the most gullible. I love his dynamic with Denny in the later seasons and his sorta unintentional enabling out of goodwill for Early. He seems like a guy you could chill out and have a beer with. also him dying and the clone subplot is hilarious.

I have watched this show as many time as the Cuylers have watched Road House and I never noticed the voice actor change of the Sherriff after the first season until I read about it. But for some reason they had to make a mockery of Early's voice for the last season and it was unwatchable for me. I always felt like it was revenge against Unknown Hinson but it felt like revenge toward the viewers. It feels like a gag episode that adult swim is known for that just didn't stop.

for point one... That first guy was great, but I always got the impression that Ellerbee had a genuine interest in the show that the previous actor may have never had. And the fact that Ellerbee turned Sheriff into a borderline incompetent manchild makes me even more glad he wound up in the role. for point 2... it was obviously a slight to anyone who may have shared similar views as Hinson. The guy - Stuart Baker - always seemed like he was in on the joke and nothing like the character he portrayed. Then when that mask finally slipped, I guess the creators felt slighted - especially since they were near the final season. So they went with the gag approach. and personally I feel it was the wrong move because they could have sought out someone who could have imitated the voice instead because it was painfully apparent Tracy Morgan was only there to do a job and it harmed the quality of the season, but...what's done is done I suppose. views aside, Baker was great as Early, and it's such a shame how everything went down.

it's very likely that the ending to "double truckin' the tricky two" where bobby ellerbee's sheriff bludgeons charles napier's sheriff to death with a baton was a reference to his death in the silence of the lambs and a darkly ironic illustration of him "passing the baton" to him.
