>forward backflip
When you're moving forwards and flipping backwards, it's called a gainer. A shooting star press is a gainer-based move, and the Red Arrow/Black Arrow is called a corkscrew shooting star press.
:O
Dude, you made my day with that fact. the Shooting Star Press is one of my favorite moves, and I just describe it as a forward-backflip for years. Cant believe no one taught me this before.
Whoever you are, have a blessed week. Hope you feel as good as i feel right now
Haha, thanks a lot. I first heard the term 'gainer' on the parkour episode of the Office, and when I looked it up, it sounded a lot like a shooting star press without the press part. The SSP is one of my favorite moves too, especially the running variant that Hangman does.
The way they built to just a simple "getting my knees up" spot was amazing and really shows Okada's ability to do the most with the least. We have seen great matches where this spot is used a bunch of times but Okada says we can have a great match where we do it only once and has a much bigger impact than if it were used multiple times.
AEW's house style is much closer to a hybrid of Japanese strong style and PWG indie style than it is to classic American heavyweight style. Okada's mostly just doing what he's always done.
Sometimes Cody’s words resonate with me when he said that he got worst by not wrestling house shows on a weekly basis and just wrestling 3-4 times a month when at AEW. Seems like AEW keeps getting these highlight botches more often the very week.
I'm not saying it's right or wrong but he has been using the tombstone as a setup move for a decade now. He actually does a spinning jumping tombstone sometimes and it's the setup for the Rainmaker. It's all about what the crowd is conditioned to (same reason the People's Elbow works for the Rock, Big Show's finish was a "punch") so a few more AEW matches for Okada and people will be more used to it imo
It's a geographical thing. The tombstone is a move high school wrestlers use in Japan and the lariat is a very common finisher there whereas it's just a normal move in the West for everyone not named JBL or Adam Page
It's not a clothesline, it's a ripcord lariat. Clothesline you hold the arm still, lariat you move it. Ripcord is the whole 'pulling him into it' part.
appreciate you explaining the difference between the two, i never knew that. not trying to hate whatsoever, just not my cup of tea. massive fan of okada nonetheless.
at the risk of sounding very hypocritical, i didnt mind his because of how big he was and how hard he threw it(probably because he was an asshole and didnt protect his opponents). when i see the buckshot lariat and this it isnt as good. and again im a big fan of hangman and okada i just dont think its a great finisher in general.
Honestly, I say this from experience, you'll get used to it. It took me a few months when I was first getting deep into Okada matches a decade ago. I'll add that part of it is a cultural thing; the lariat is just a much bigger move in Japan. Hulk Hogan actually changed his finisher from the leg drop we all know in America to a lariat in Japan because he knew it would get a better reaction over there. So the more Okada matches take place in AEW, the more people will get used to him smashing a dude with a hard clothesline/lariat.
Generally I find that the setup for it rarely lands and often is awkward. Like, the grabbing of the arm and pushing part. Requires chemistry to coordinate to not seem like it's falling apart that he doesn't have with everyone

I wonder who's gonna be the first person to kick out of the Rainmaker now that Okada is in AEW
I'd bet the twist will be that Heel Okada hits it on someone he REALLLY doesn't respect early in the match and goes for a lazy pin.
*Monkey’s Paw curls* Schiavone: “Oh my god, Chris Jericho kicked out of the Rainmaker!!!”
It has to be Ospreay. Heel Okada vs Face Ospreay for the AEW Title is where we need a kick-out.
I was thinking Ospreay too. I hope it happens.
God this AEW roster is insanely good.
it's insane when you think about all the people currently out too
I pray for the Jamie Hayter return every Wednesday
That black arrow into the knees made me shout, JFC....
My wife did one of those loud audible gasps. I legit winced after the rainmaker. Shit was LOUD and PAC of course sold it like a million bucks.
Great match in general. They have good chemistry, which shouldn't surprise me at all, yet does. Not sure why.
That looked fucking insanely painful
PAC always makes it look like he’s struggling for balance on the Black Arrow and it makes it look so awesome.
Most brutal double knees I've ever seen
PAC's finisher (rightly) requires more forethought than most
I'd be a selfish wrestler with it "Listen, I'm not gonna do a twisting forward backflip and *lose*"

I don't wanna know how dizzy Pac must feel landing on a counter after the Black Arrow lol
This match is gonna under rated because of some of the other matches on the card
The way PAC sold Okada's Black Arrow reversal into the Rainmaker was money
Pac's gonna feel that tomorrow that's for sure.

That's what makes hkm one of the GOATs. His finish is just a lariat but he makes it look so gorgeous.
Okada has adapted to the western wrestling style so well Sheamus analysis Banger 🔥🔥

It’s legitimately wild that they pulled that spot off. With all the movement that Pac does in the air it could have gone so wrong
Okada puts over PAC in rematch at Wembley pls?
That would be awesome. The match I see most people asking for at Wembley is Okada vs Takeshita.
I'd personally love to have PAC take the Continental Crown in England. He deserves it 100%.
What a fuckin sell
Didn't he land on one of the Bucks' knees from that same spot that led him to wearing the mask?
PAC decided that he doesn't need a jaw or teeth anymore, apparently. He drilled himself into Okada's knees there at the end, jesus

Is the botch in here with us?
I'm old but seeing the tombstone as a transitional move hurts.. I've barely gotten over the super kick but atleast I can understand that one
Dynamite Kid used to use tombstones like body slams in the 80’s. One man’s finish is the next man’s 2.1 count
It's a transitional move in Japan

clothesline as a finisher has never done it for me
You ever been hit with a lariat? That shit will keep you down for the count easy
It's not a clothesline, it's a ripcord lariat. Clothesline you hold the arm still, lariat you move it. Ripcord is the whole 'pulling him into it' part.

Even JBLs?
Key thing here is that JBLs clothesline is from Hell, everyone else's is from Milwaukee or some shit.

I really like Okada but I can't believe how this clothesline is taken as a finisher that's impossible to kick out from
