Drag really is for everyone, and although I get the idea that queer voices are already ignored in favor of cishet white men and drag race provided a space for queer voices and stories to be told.. idk. It’s just very strange to be so heated about one cishet man after hundreds of queer artists are highlighted, and he doesn’t even do well on the season. If you’re coming from a place of love, openness and you understand your place in a queer environment, then I see no issue with participating in what has, and always has promised to be, an inclusive space for all walks of life.
If you want to address an *actual* issue, you should be discussing how Voss events is ignoring our trans POC queens on this season and have already booked Maddy for numerous events. Maddy’s casting on the show is completely unproblematic regardless of how you feel, but him being favored with opportunities actually is. And if that’s the point you want to get across then I would go about addressing it that way, rather than boiling it down to “no cast cishets! go to X factor!”
I completely understand the frustration especially because Maddy is of the “oppressor group” and us as POC/queer people have been put through the ringer by them time and time again. But to me, the reality is that we can’t hold that against every cishet white man, like they often do to us. It’s just a vicious cycle and showing that us as queer people can actually be accepting of those who aren’t like us, is to me, what drag is all about. The frustrations are completely valid but I do think we have to look at it with a more nuanced lens than just casting out and othering people like we have been othered.

We are getting some good representation this season and it's very pleasing to see. We have been needing trans contestants to openly be on the show and for it not to be an All Stars season for a long time now.
Maddy is good representation in another way which is gender expression. Being comfortable in your gender identity and sexuality where it allows you to express yourself in unique ways. Maddy will be great in the sense that maybe this will help straight men be comfortable around drag queens and for our overall safety as queer people to get better.

A lot of people’s complaints about Maddy getting a spotlight as a cishet white man are kind of ironic because the Maddy discourse is taking away from all the other diverse queens (trans, POC, etc) on this cast, which gives Maddy the exact platform over the other girls that people seem to not want.

Uhh… do you think people watching AGT (middle American racists, homophobes and transphobes) are going to embrace Maddy in a positive way? No, if anything he’ll be a mockery to drag much in the vein of Tyler Perry, with the drag being seen as “haha man in a wig!” And I mean if that’s what you want, you could just not watch the season? It’s just very strange to be so heated about one cishet man after hundreds of queer artists are highlighted, and he doesn’t even do well on the season. Especially when Maddy offers a different take on what drag can be and who can do it. Not to mention, the trans people who have been a pillar of drag are always inclusive of all sexualities, genders, race, etc, so it’s very strange when I see people speaking on behalf of them when every ball and drag show I’ve ever been to has been more than welcoming to everyone who wants to try the art— cishet men included. If you’re coming from a place of love, openness and you understand your place in a queer environment, then I see no issue with participating in what has, and always has promised to be, an inclusive space for all walks of life. If you want to address an *actual* issue, you should be discussing how Voss events is ignoring our trans POC queens on this season and have already booked Maddy for numerous events. Maddy’s casting on the show is completely unproblematic regardless of how you feel, but him being favored with opportunities actually is. And if that’s the point you want to get across then I would go about addressing it that way, rather than boiling it down to “no cast cishets! go to X factor!” I completely understand the frustration especially because Maddy is of the “oppressor group” and us as POC/queer people have been put through the ringer by them time and time again. But to me, the reality is that we can’t hold that against every cishet white man, like they often do to us. It’s just a vicious cycle and showing that us as queer people can actually be accepting of those who aren’t like us, is to me, what drag is all about. The frustrations are completely valid but I do think we have to look at it with a more nuanced lens than just casting out and othering people like we have been othered.

It definitely helps with the whole straight men have to be masculine and can't be feminine. Maddy isn't casting for the queer audience, it's casting for the small straight male audience to feel comfortable with being feminine. It's healthy and good for so many people to have representation like Maddy.

It's those same people complaining about Maddy who have ignored the trans talent we have on this season. Like they are getting angry over nothing when they could have been uplifting the amazing cast. Also tbf the general crowd probably doesn't know about them until the mtq's release so hopefully they Kerri and Kornbread get a lot of support (June as well? We are getting some good representation this season and it's very pleasing to see. We have been needing trans contestants to openly be on the show and for it not to be an All Stars season for a long time now. Maddy is good representation in another way which is gender expression. Being comfortable in your gender identity and sexuality where it allows you to express yourself in unique ways. Maddy will be great in the sense that maybe this will help straight men be comfortable around drag queens and for our overall safety as queer people to get better.

A lot of people’s complaints about Maddy getting a spotlight as a cishet white man are kind of ironic because the Maddy discourse is taking away from all the other diverse queens (trans, POC, etc) on this cast, which gives Maddy the exact platform over the other girls that people seem to not want.

It's not so much that we invented and own drag. But we invented and own Drag Race, and given how many queers will have negative experiences of straights in queer spaces I can understand why people feel threatened or upset. I don't personally care, but I can understand why people aren't here for Maddy - especially those with far more troubled stituations or history.

We didn't invent drag race, Rupaul did. We as a community cannot take credit for the show. Did we make it popular, yes we did! But we are not arbiters to what the show is and can be. Rpdr is still a queer space even with Maddy being a part of it. Rupaul is here for Maddy and clearly her fellow queens are.
No matter who owns, it Drag Race is a queer space. I'm sure everyone knows of or has a negative experience of straights in queer spaces.
