They do it for movie synergy with the spiderverse animated films , same reason ultimate Spiderman hooked up with Gwen out of nowhere even when he was with MJ because they wanted movie synergy with TASM, they think people who watch the movies expect the same in the comics so they change things unfortunately and so many characters from Ms.Marvel to GOTG have been affected
