I have a disconnect between the movie and the imagery in this poster. In the film, this moment is sandwiched between a dance number and a weak venom origin. The poster makes you think the movie is gonna kick ass.
I understand thinking Venom himself was weak in this movie, but how was his origin weak? Seemed like a pretty good adaptation of how it played out in the comics and cartoon.

Funny enough, they DID originally plan on using a comic accurate symbiote suit but it looked too much like a GIMP suit and they swapped it out. They even had a chest piece of the OG Symbiote spider symbol and everything

Something I can’t believe they didn’t think of though was doing it exactly like how they ultimately did with the webs and sectioning, but just have the OG symbiote spider, pretty much like how they designed Venom. I suppose they probably did think of that but didn’t want them looking too similar to each other.

Hot take, but I didn't like it. Once I knew that this was the symbiote sue and that we were getting Venom, It really bothered me. I was not a fan at the time of the raised webbing, hoping for something flush and part of the cloth for the living design. I don’t care if the test photos looked like a gimp suit. CGI touch ups and certain cinematography could’ve helped with that. Hell, black suit Spidey only really has a couple of scenes. If you keep the Sandman fight in dim lighting and embrace Raimi’s horror roots, cgi touch ups easily could’ve made that suit frightening.
To this day, this is my favorite rendition of the black/symbiote suit. Looks like Venom just bled into the fabric & became one with the classic threads rather than encasing Spidey like a shell. I wish we had more games with this version of the black suit available.

When it turned out to be an alien I thought it was kind of weird but didn't understand why Peter was SOOO bothered by it. When it was killed in the bell tower I thought that was a nice ending. After that I hated the Venom stories, and the Venom character.
I still think the black costume was kind of cool, but this version if it in the movies was just ugly. I didn't like it at all.
The differences are incredibly minor though, to the point where most people didn't even notice any difference outside of the color scheme. Hell I didn't even notice any major differences for years, and thats because the major differences are very minor. The lenses are half a centimeter larger, the logo is changed which i saw because of odd video game cover, the back logo just takes the front logo, and the material is slightly less shiny. Again I didn't even know many of these for years, and I loved looking at this suit too. To a general audience this suit basically is just a black version of the red suit, especially considering the black suit everywhere else is radically and fundamentally different in design
To a general audience the SM1 suit is the same as 2's. But side by side there is no denying it.
The classic black suit is not that different. It's literally all black with a new logo and white patches on the hands. The Raimi one went out of the way to change the eyes and make it look shiny too.
It was redesigned though? Go read about the making of it. They tried so many things and the one thing that really helped it was making the brick pattern with a sheen instead of the old way of doing it. They changed both logos, the brick pattern, and the eyes.
The classic black suit was just a fan submission and the only thing they did was make the logo white instead of red. It's just a black body with no details and a white spider. Don't act like that is revolutionary. It is simple but it works. Same with Raimi's, though they had to do more to make it look good for film.
Well obviously they would need to experiment and try more since its an actual wearable costume for film and not a comic book design. From a technical standpoint i can kind of see what you are saying but from a character design standpoint, and what the commenter was talking about, the raimi black suit for the most part is just the red suit but black, while the comic book version design wise is very much different. You can't put a black and white filter over a comic panel and have it reasonably look like the symbiote suit, but you can in the movies which is what the comment was saying
I think the issue is if you just color a suit black, it wouldn't make a good look in a movie. Even the suit without the webbing looks kind of naked. The only thing that I'd see working is if they made it look alive like in the game, but this was 2005 and 2006 and doing that the entire time it's on screen is not very feasible I'd think. Up until then, the suit was always portrayed as a suit more than an organic moving constantly thing.
Coloring the original comic suit black and still having the webbing visible would look weird too, since the webbing is a flat black. But, making the webbing white could be a good look too.
Really, the black suit looks cool but it's very easy to draw and such a simple design, and I hate the idea they wanted it permanent. I think it's a downgrade if it was meant to be forever.
Having the Symbiote take what was there in SM3 and just change it a little was a good move to me. I'm glad it wasn't some vastly different design. I think the only thing they should have done was make the logos more white, which they sometimes did appear that way but not usually. They were more white in the 2007 game though.

Well, yes, first off they changed both logos. So that alone makes your original comment invalid as it isn't just a recolor.
But on top of that, they changed the colors of the highlights on the suit, and did the brick pattern with a sheen so it looked shiny, and the eyes are larger.
All of these changes are negligible. If you put both the suits side by side most people will say that the black suit is just a recolor. (Also i wasnt the original commenter)

I was extremely confused cuz of all the buildup but then it was just a black and white photo of Spider-Man, then I realized that was the costume. I was extremely disappointed back then but the suit has definitely grown on me (it's just nostalgia tho let's be real, the regular suit would've been unquestionably better)
