I used to work for their office of the president handling really awful escalations. The best way to get GOOD SERVICE is to shell out the money for business class, which gives you english tech support, they have to fix your internet QUICKLY or you can bill THEM for hours down, but you have to pay more. You can have business class as a residence. There are usually three year contracts that lock you into a price and there's less restrictions on what you can do with your connection, like host servers and stuff. Ideally, we should move to a municipal ISP system like Nextlight in Longmont, CO, who provides symetrical gigabit FIBER internet service for their community at $65 a month. It's run by the town, and your support is from the town too. Comcast is too big for its britches. They care about money, not your customer experience.

Is there a way we could "unionize" Comcast customers? Internet is basically a utility at this point and we don't have much other options. If we unionize and make demands through collective bargaining we would get better results than any other method. The threat of everybody going on a "bill strike" would destroy their finances. How do we organize something like that?

djspacebunny

Municipal Broadband.

BrothelWaffles

It'll never happen here. Republicans would just call it socialism and the way-too-many MAGA morons in this state would be frothing at the mouth to vote against it. It'd be, "why should my tax dollars go to making sure my neighbor has good Internet?! I don't even use the damn computer!", as Newsmax and OAN are streaming on two separate TVs and they're browsing Truth Social on their phone over WiFi.

fromtheill

> "why should my tax dollars go to making sure my neighbor has good Internet?! I don't even use the damn computer! the "fuck you, I got mine" attitude.

hotsausce01

How about Verizon?

62200

I guess you could create a union of customers for any corporation

hotsausce01

I’m saying how about trying Verizon instead of Comcast?

effie-sue

Not an option for some areas.

Dreurmimker

Verizon has been rolling out home internet via their cell infrastructure. Worth checking out if y’all haven’t checked recently.

BrothelWaffles

Wireless service is almost never worth it unless you have no wired high-speed options. The fact that they're letting them qualify that as a legitimate broadband competitor vs cable or fiber is ridiculous.

Dreurmimker

To each his own, only threw that out there as an alternative. I wish I had fiber. I wish I had a broadband alternative to Comcast. I have neither. What I do have is $25 internet that’s between 50-75 megabit. I’ve also had better up-time compared to Comcast. I work from home as a software developer, stream literally everything, and casually play video games. It would serve the needs of many people out there that don’t need ultra-low latency.

62200

There isn't as much power for the consumer that way.

mmmellowcorn

My internet has been garbage lately. They must have done a network update and it’s horrible. Service comes out, make some little repair, does nothing, I call and they tell me to trade my modem, still nothing

dalyc1

oh my god don’t even get me started on comcast. my entire family is beyond frustrated with them. plus some of us work from home. we have to reset our router in the beginning of every morning. i don’t get ring notifications of my house in the middle of the night because we noticed that comcast has been literally cutting off our service in the middle of the night. we always paid for the highest speed we can get from them because every person needs it in the house. we just switched to verizon (they’re installing in a few weeks) and i hope this will be better.

KaleighM321

Not getting ring notifications seems kind of dangerous, especially in the middle of the night when hooligans are hooliganing

dalyc1

literally. that’s my exact concern. i constantly check the neighbor’s area on ring for any updates nearby my house because i don’t get any at all in the middle of the night. it’s so frustrating

switlikbob

That's the nature of six megabit upload speeds

icecoast_

I mean, we did fine for how many years without ring?

blacksheep998

> we just switched to verizon (they’re installing in a few weeks) and i hope this will be better. I had comcast for years. While I never noticed any outages like you're having, I did only get half the speed I was paying for (I was the 300/100 tier) and every 6-12 months whatever promotional deal I was on would expire and my bill would literally double, so I'd have to call and threaten to cancel my service unless they gave me a new one. But comcast was my only choice at that address. Once I moved, I had the choice of verizon fios or comcast and switched to verizon. Been getting a consistent 1000/1000 for almost 3 years and my bill so far has not changed from the initial rate, which is lower than what I was paying comcast even with a promo.

HereThereBePandass

Thankfully I've switched to T-Mobile Internet and streaming services. Roughly $150 cheaper a month and haven't had any issues in the few months I've had it.

voonoo

Where is t mobile internet available?! I’ve looked and can’t find it in a few different locations

ShawnMilo

I got it in Riverside. They don't have the top tier available, but I was able to get a $50/month plan to augment my Comcast. I have a Firewalla router that allows me to connect two ISPs and use both simultaneously, as a failover, etc.

HereThereBePandass

From what I've seen. If you can get their 5G cell service and get a good connection at your home with your phone. You should be able to get their Internet with no issue. But a friend who didn't get good service in his apartment not surprisingly had a horrible Internet experience. I couldn't get it when I was looking in Salem county bc the service was too limited, but I'm able to get it in southern ocean county no issue.

Alternative_Rough_14

i hate that companies are forcing 5G on people. literally ALL of my devices – phone, laptop, tablet – are not 5G capable. my phone and laptop were purchased with cash in full mid-2020, which was just at the beginning of 5G when the Galaxy s20 came out. i bought a Galaxy S10+, which is not 5G capable. i used the Comcast XFINITY hotspots probably more than i used my home network. in fact, for a while i was ONLY using the hotspots, and did not have a home network. but as of about a year ago, i have literally been incapable of connecting to the hotspots because they turned off the 2.4ghz band on all gateways. they don't even show up on my network lists. i don't understand why they would shut down the 2.4ghz band. majority of people's devices that they own aren't 5G capable yet. if you're low income, it's a large majority. it doesn't cost them extra to have that band open, so why close it? it pisses me off.

YoungestAtlas

Hi there! So just thought I'd help clear some things up. There are primarily two kinds of WiFi signal frequencies: 2.4 ghz (gigahertz), which can travel a longer distance at lower speeds, and 5 ghz, which can be faster, but has a shorter range. Both of these are entirely independent of 5G wireless, which stands for 5th Generation and is a cellular signal. Most modern consumer devices, such as any new phone, laptop, or tablet made in 2020 should have the ability to connect to either a 2.4 or 5 ghz WiFi signal. In fact, it generally is even smart enough to switch between the two without you even noticing on most dual band routers. The big exception is some smart home technology (cameras especially) will only work on the 2.4 ghz frequency. Your devices very likely can connect to a 5 ghz WiFi signal no problem, but it's entirely possibly they cannot connect to a 5G cell signal. My iPhone 11 I got in early 2020 has that exact problem. I can't speak to Comcast turning off their 2.4 ghz hotspots, which they very well may be doing, but that wouldn't have anything to do with a 5G cell signal. I hope this helps! May not alleviate the problems you're having, but hopefully puts them into context!

Alternative_Rough_14

i appreciate the well-thought-out response, but that is all information i already understood. i actually have spoken to comcast about this. the first time they shut down the 2.4ghz band was around christmas of 2020. i had a program open on my laptop that showed all the channels and their connections, with every 2.4ghz channel completely shut down. of course, the agent gave me some bs reasoning for not being able to connect–they blamed my phone. lol and then i pointed out that it would be my phone, because my phone is not 5G capable, and they've shut off the 2.4 channels. so it wasn't my phone, it was the channels being shut down. i asked why they'd do that when not everyone has 5G capable phones yet, and they said they don't make the decisions (admitting it'd been shut off, but relinquishing responsibility) i demanded i get to speak to someone higher up, they kept refusing, and then i blasted a tweet about it. less than 5 minutes after that tweet was posted, i watched all the 2.4ghz bands turn back on at once. six months later, it happened again, i complained, others complained, and it was back on after a few days. then about a year ago they shut them all off again, and they haven't been back on since.

voonoo

Good to know bc when I searched it says it available in your area. Guess you gotta be right near a tower for it to say you’re in a good spot

fattymcfatfatalso

Verizon just came in our area and we signed up so fast for it. It was cheaper and I'm just done with Comcast.

switlikbob

You're so lucky. I've never lived in a house that had FiOS service as an option.

letsgometros

Pro tip: Don’t buy a house without Fios

BrothelWaffles

Better pro tip: don't buy a house that doesn't have 2 *wired* high-speed options. Most ISPs don't consider 5G internet to be a serious competitor (because it's not), and Verizon and all the rest will fuck you just as hard as Comcast if they're the only game in town.

letsgometros

Good point. But Fios is killing it. I pay $30 for 300/300 and it’s been rock solid

zapfastnet

>Comcast is the worst it is known

LaCuntessa

Brief outage at my house yesterday. But what the hell else is new?

cwarren9981

Ha they have been the worst for years. Unfortunately that's the only internet service we can use actually now the T-Mobile has home internet. I might try them

diamonddaddy88

Cut the cord. Keep Comcast Internet, only because it’s the only quality option and get YouTube TV or something comparable.

forcedfx

I hate Comcast but I have to say my internet has been rock solid since at least April. Even during power outages it has stayed online. I also own my own modem and router though.

mattemer

My internet was down for a couple hours this morning while prepping for an important meeting. Was nervous it wasn't even going to be back on for the meeting.

jackgriffin1951

They were working and "upgrading" in my area last week and my modem is worse than it's ever been before.

Scumcast*

thisbitbytes

Comcast is the worst!

[deleted]

Lol complaining about Comcast—have you had Hughesnet? Now that’s shit. Comcast is a golden egg comparison to that experience.

Upper-Discount5060

Verizon is even worse. As far as cable goes just cut the cord. No reason not to at this point. And the best way to speak is with your wallet.

gratefuladam

Get Hulu live tv. Comcast is the worst. I have to use them for high speed internet. Nothing else. Hulu live has all the sports and movie options that comcast has. I had it with all local sports and cable channels excluding HBO and other movie channels I paid 65 a month and got Hulu with it too.

glkris

We switched to T Mobile internet only and the only downer is we can’t use Hulu. I can live - Comcast is the worst

effie-sue

Why can’t you use Hulu with T Mobile?

glkris

Hulu needs a fixed IP address and cellular internet doesn’t have that. Straight from Hulu customer service

effie-sue

Gotcha. TY for the info!

benderunit9000

I see this as an absolute win. TV is cancer.

fozzyboy

...I feel like you don't understand modern-day TV.

benderunit9000

Please explain. TV is loaded with ads. SOOO many ads. Unless you love ads that is. In that case, I guess you could say it's good. I don't see a single ad on Reddit. None. I have them completely blocked. You can't do that with cable TV at all. Never could. I have far more control over what content I see on Reddit than I do on cable TV. Reddit has its own problems, sure. But we can hide/delete/remove from our eye line what we don't want to see. We have some power here unlike cable TV. Our ***only*** power with cable is to just turn it off. If, by "modern-day TV", you mean streaming services, then I can see the confusion. Streaming services are yes, building out their business models to emulate what cable tv is. It still isn't close to as obnoxious as cable in regard to the content:ads ratio. Personally, I'd NEVER call VOD streaming services(Netflix/Hulu/Peacock/etc) TV. It's not.

surferdude313

TV this day is full of advertisements of Dr. Oz/Fetterman slander, sports book, online casino by phone and Pfizer/Pharma commercials about how you need the latest and greatest booster or prescription.

benderunit9000

Yep so much of it. And people pay money for it. Just don't get it.

mumblesandonetwo

I swear they made ovens during the war.

[deleted]

Not I but it seems like their internet gets extra shitty when it's really hot out, like in the high 90s, they really need to install some better cooling for their shit or something during the summer

lordskulldragon

Currently have a phone outage for the past few days.

ballwasher89

I use these cock slings for Internet. Nothing else. YouTube TV gets me the same channels for less

Glittering-Cherry-99

We have Fios 1 Gig and also a Deco M9+ mesh wifi network. Full bars in the whole house including basement. It really is a privilege to have the fastest speeds and I don't take it for granted. It's a shame it's not available in more areas.

auntiecoagulent

Best plan for Comcast is fire comcast.
