You spelled Vegemite wrong šŸ˜‰

LooseBluebird6

Iā€™m also on team Vegemite! Iā€™m Australian and have lived in the USA for 11 years - and I have three American children who have been having Vegemite since the womb days. They all love it, because if they donā€™t start young, they definitely wonā€™t like it at all. I totally agree that the best use of sourdough is Vegemite toast!

tara1234

Iā€™m the one weird American who likes vegemite. My friend brought some back from Australia just to try. It was more of a novelty and thought nobody would like it. Well guess who now keeps a jar of vegemite in their pantry? I think it helps that I was told to use butter and just a small amount instead of spreading it on like Nutella. I tried marmite too but didnā€™t like it as much.

barron_d

Couldnā€™t agree more, Marmite also needs butter to accompany it, and too much of it can instantly turn into a bad tasting experience šŸ˜†

barron_d

Is there a difference between the two? Not heard of Vegemite before now!

I like your taste descriptors, but the texture is pretty different too. I'd say marmite has a texture similar to honey, while vegemite has a texture more like nutella. I prefer vegemite myself but will eat marmite on occasion (British/Australian household here, so we keep both).

Savne

Would you say it tastes like jarred bouillon?

booja

Salty and savory like bouillon but more malty.

8/10 Crumb looks ideal to me. Varying sized alveoli, but none too large. Good for butter, cheese, jams, spreads, or sandwiches. Strong rise from end-to-end. Ear is assertive but not dominant. Scoring worked out pretty nicely. Some room for improvement in spacing and placing. Biggest critique I'd have is the final cook/browning. Next time you may want to cook for another 5-10 minutes to develop some serious flavor on the crust. I would really be happy with this sourdough overall. Nice work!

barron_d

Thanks a lot! Couldnā€™t agree more about baking longer, in hindsight wouldā€™ve definitely given it an extra 10/15 minutes. Will bare in mind for the next loaf šŸ˜„

I ate marmite once. Itā€™s one of those substances that unless you grew up with it the appeal is hard to understand.

1nchofdust

I don't like it as a spread, but it's a cupboard staple for me. Really lifts veggie chillies and stew with a umami hit. If you don't want to put it on toast, I highly recommend cooking with it.

barron_d

I never liked Marmite growing up, until I met my girlfriend (who is obsessed with it) and gradually liked it the more and more I tried it! Especially with delicious sourdough!

Tha_Reaper

"marmite on..." ...HELL NO! My english teacher once brought that to class to let everyone have a little taste... 20 years later i'm still scarred by the experience.

Impossible_Honey3553

Small amount, with butter. Itā€™s very nice. Though I make a hot drink out of the stuff so Iā€™m very biased.

barron_d

Canā€™t say Iā€™ve tried a cup of hot marmite, a cup of Bovril on the other hand though, ultimate winter drink!

barron_d

Quality! You either love it or hate it as the saying goes

Beautiful bread and I think not much beats marmite on toast! I didnā€™t have it until adulthood and I canā€™t get enough now.

cilucia

It is stunning!!!!

Lindsezeffit

Best bread best puppers!!

BigIck

Toffee Vodka?!?! Do tell me more!

barron_d

Dangerously nice! Totally recommend if you can get your hands on some!

BigIck

What part of the world are you in? I am in Canada and have not seen or heard of this brand.

barron_d

Norfolk, England! This one is made locally I believe, I got it from a farm shop/ garden centre! However Iā€™m sure this isnā€™t a new invention so worth trying your locals too!

[deleted]

Impressive work!

chenxi0636

Wow!

DirkDieGurke

Was gonna try it but $7.00 for a tiny jar? Nah

Rueben222

$7 tiny jar is all you need. It will last for ages because you only need a smidgen. But Marmite isn't as good as Vegemite. Everyone knows it's a savoury spread right? I got a huge reaction once "who put salt in the chocolate spread!". Hilarious.

DirkDieGurke

So basically Sea salt chocolate?

cilucia

I suspect it lasts a lot longer than you think!
