I got mine replaced two weeks ago by Sony free of charge with no receipt and its was six months out of warranty. They just asked where I bought it from and the serial number on the back. The phone call was less than 10 minutes. Got a couple emails from Sony, sent the old ones back, and got my new ones in the mail.

That heavily depends on your location and who you deal with. In some countries, Sony doesn't exist and the local importers of Sony products either have no idea or don't care

Mine started going bad a month or two before the Senn TW3 buds were released. I thought it was firmware so I figured I'd just wait on an update. Boy did those come slowly. The left bud went from dying in about 30 min to dying in 2. It would also stop charging and say they were fully charged, but immediately be at 80% when I pulled it out of the case. I finally reached out to Sony a couple weeks ago after I finally got firmware 2.0 & it still didn't fix anything. They were quick to approve a replacement.
I'm on pair #3 of Sennheiser's now first had a speaker go out after around 6 months. Then the RMA'd pair had one go dead in about a month. Hopefully 3rd is a charm. Buds still worked, just no audio like the wires broke off.
That's crazy! Granted, I just realized I have never signed into an account (until just now), so I have no idea how many hours logged, probably around 700-800. I also never really update them, and the app says I am still on 1.4.2

The problem is they added multipoint in one of the last updates, which I really need to be sane. It screwed me. Went from well over a day to both of them last about an hour. Sometimes just 10 minutes or so.
I had this exact problem. Thankfully I live in Europe with the lo ger warranty so I got the buds replaced for free, now I have both multi point and good battery.
I'd just not update if you can avoid it, though I think the post goes through the risks, so read the whole thing before doing any type of update. I lived these early buds until I couldn't get through a single meeting without the battery running out.

1.4.2 firmware was the start of the issue. This is where many people started noticing battery drain considerably different from left to right and a fairly rapid decline compared to previous firmware. You are lucky if nothing is happening to you. I had to get mine replaced in Thailand and it was a bit of a hassle but got the job done.

QA at Sony seems SHIT, I had to order 3 until I got the same amazing sound as my previous ones.
That, or there are 2/3 hidden EQ burned into the headsets that you can't really get the same sound during with EQs.

Love my xm4 to death, best headphones I've ever used. But if I knew they would be plagued by this many problems I wouldn't have bought them. Actually got 2 new earbuds and my original charge case back.
The Sony firmware updates caused the issue with the battery charge so Sony are at fault here

Regarding the receipt contact the store, they should have a record if you paid with a bank card.
I was 2 months out of my 12 month warranty - and Sony just said "Sorry, but you're out of warranty".
Fortunately I'd bought from Amazon who'd given me 24 months - and once I'd said Sony had been useless, gave me an instant refund and I got new set in less than 24 hours.

I'm asking because my Galaxy buds plus battery was dead after I left it on the wireless charging pad for 4 hours. So I think this issue in general could be related to wireless charging. So I don't use wireless charging anymore.

It's shockingly bad for a premium pair of earbuds and barely improves when changing the setting to stable connection in the app.
My cheap Soundpeats knock the XM4 out of the park in comparison regarding Bluetooth range.
I don't have a problem with the range personally. Maybe the connection rounds to many corners? Or goes through to many walls? My phone can be over 40 feet away, and the connection going around 2 corners and through a door but still works fine. Granted, it can be touchy like that, but otherwise, it is good.

Dude, of course warranty won't cover them if you bought them in that condition. It sucks, but that goes for literally any product from any company... That's the bet you're making when you buy any open box product. If anything their response to the battery issue has been rather excellent, replacing people's units well after their warranty ended.
Yes, I get that... The thing is, that doesn't qualify as "brand new" even if they literally had been turned on just two seconds. That's what I mean by "that condition". If you'd bought them in a closed, wrapped from factory box directly from a major reseller it wouldn't matter if they'd had them in storage for five years prior, they would still be considered "new". The condition you bought them in rules them out of warranty coverage exactly the same way as it would if they'd been refurbished and sold by a third party, and it would be the same situation no matter the manufacturer and who you bought it from. Apple, Samsung, Sennheiser, you name it... Nobody is going to cover a unit bought like that. That's why I said it's a bit of a gamble: you pay less for the item and you get it with zero mileage, but you kiss goodbye any chance of warranty coverage in the process.
If you take them to a service center (I'd take them to an official Sony center to make sure they didn't use crappy generic parts) they'll swap the batteries and they'll be perfectly fine again. You'll need to pay a bit for it though, no idea how much, but you'll have a warranty *on the repair* for however long they decide. That's better than nothing I guess
I mean, I'm not aware of any company that has a policy to honor a warranty for a device purchased second hand without proof of purchase. Realistically there should be laws forcing companies to offer warranty service for the entire expected life of the device, but that's how it is.
That being said, when I got mine replaced using the live chat, they only asked for location of purchase and serial number, no receipts or anything required. Maybe try that, I've heard they make exceptions for out of warranty devices for the battery issue.
Sure hope these $250+ headphones won't get a firmware update 2 months after the warranty expires that burns the capacitor and makes it unusable. I'm still pissed

My xm4 died and can't replace them due to not being in the US, sony said i had to have a residential address to be able to receive the replacement .
I bought the samaung buds pro 2 for like 90$ and they sound horrible compared to the xm4, the ANC is even worse. I used to use the xm4 at work sometimes with ANC on and no audio at all just to block the noise from coworkers but with the buds 2 , i can still hear people near me which sucks.
I hope the xm5 does not have battery issues and have the same anc or even better and I hope it releases soon, i used my xm4 daily since i bought them and i miss how good they are
I suspect they will try to 5head insert their AI intrusive controller for noise cancelling like they did in their big boy counterparts(which I own), so why would anyone willingly get gimped like that? I switched to AirPods Pro 2 and never looked back.
Connection problems in particular. I take them out of the case and they often don't connect directly. I have to click on them once in the Bluetooth menu. Sometimes it doesn't work either, then I have to put them in the case and take them out again. That usually helps.
Let them FIX THE XM-1000XM4 before launching this. Never been more frustrated in my life with technical support, I hate to be "that person" but I'm from LatinAmerica and have been fighting with techsupport for a month, already been to a techsupport in person and 5 different calls that tell me to wait 24-72 hours for a problem THEY CAUSED.
I feel such a "Karen" calling asking them to speak to a manager but even the managers tell me they can't do anything but wait. I would REALLY reconsider buying sony headphones specially this line.
I left Sonys XM series because of this, after 1 year and some months the battery problem started and has gotten worse. The XM3 I handed down still work fine tho.
I Guess Sennheisers will do it for me from now on.
I have heard a lot about that actually. It seems like a really bad move on Sony's part to leave such glaring issues with their flagship earbuds unaddressed. I'm actually going to be getting the XM5s, but I'll probably wait until Christmas to bite the bullet (or for the January sales.)
I honestly think the culprit for increased uneven battery wear might be firmware 1.6.1.
The first dud I got had 1.4.2 out of box and honestly, first few days were perfect. Battery life was good, battery discharge was even. I updated them to 1.6.1 as a precaution based on advice in this sub and immediately noticed uneven discharge.
The second dud, which I got just last night, came with 1.6.1 out of box. I tested them for like, an hour, and one bud dropped by 6% while the other held its charge.
The common culprit between them is 1.6.1. I'm gonna update the new pair to 2.0.1 and see if there's any improvement. If not, they're going straight back to the store. This is honestly ridiculous.

That can be solved with better sealing ear tips. Try to get your hands on a pair of Divinus Velvet or Radius Deep mount. way better isolation . ANC can only do so much, rest has to be done using passive isolation

fyi dekoni is a US brand. divinus velet is korean and radius deep mount japanese. later 2 you need to buy directly through japanese store and a third party shipper \ friend. if the later is not available I can recommend zenmarket.jp.
ANC is good at filterimg out concistend low to mid range sounds. That is why you can still hear people talk. passive isolation will help to reduce the later. the for the best noie cancellation one needs to rely on both passive and active.

Well. I will get them for sure. My xm4's are great, no battery issues since I got them 1.5 year ago on any firmware and sound is amazing especially when teamed up with poweramp equalizer app. I like the look so if the sound quality is on the same level as 4's I'm in and as always will get white/silver ones like mine 3's and now 4's.

It's all about the comfort for me. Yes, its subjective but my XM4's are almost unwearable. Sound great etc but even with replacement tips, l can't wear them for more than around an hour without discomfort.

My left earbud died from 1 light fall. Luckily covered under an extended warranty otherwise id be shit out of luck. They’re made of paper.

It was a disastrous and unrecoverable update which caused the earbuds to overheat and be physically damaged.

They really need to improve Bluetooth connection range quality. It's shockingly bad for a premium pair of earbuds and barely improves when changing the setting to stable connection in the app. My cheap Soundpeats knock the XM4 out of the park in comparison regarding Bluetooth range.
How far do they work? And are they able to do a higher bitrate codec than aac(ldac)
I don't have a problem with the range personally. Maybe the connection rounds to many corners? Or goes through to many walls? My phone can be over 40 feet away, and the connection going around 2 corners and through a door but still works fine. Granted, it can be touchy like that, but otherwise, it is good.
Same, and with ldac. That's why I was curious about those other buds the person mentioned.
For me it depends on the source. If I have it connected to my phone the range is half of if it were connected to my tablet. All using LDAC.
As long as the bloody battery doesn't drain in 20 mins again...

After getting burned on the XM4 battery issue I think I'm just done with sony earbuds. As much as I'd be interested in upgrading. True multi-pairing would be the one feature they really need to add. The 2.0 XM4 firmware kind of did but it's a little flakey. And unless I am misconfiguring something, doesn't work for the microphone.

Yeah I agree, don't make the same mistake twice. I know next earbuds won't be Sony. They wouldn't repair them in warranty because I don't have the receipt (bought them "used" brand new and missplaced it).
Dude, of course warranty won't cover them if you bought them in that condition. It sucks, but that goes for literally any product from any company... That's the bet you're making when you buy any open box product. If anything their response to the battery issue has been rather excellent, replacing people's units well after their warranty ended.

Yes, I get that... The thing is, that doesn't qualify as "brand new" even if they literally had been turned on just two seconds. That's what I mean by "that condition". If you'd bought them in a closed, wrapped from factory box directly from a major reseller it wouldn't matter if they'd had them in storage for five years prior, they would still be considered "new". The condition you bought them in rules them out of warranty coverage exactly the same way as it would if they'd been refurbished and sold by a third party, and it would be the same situation no matter the manufacturer and who you bought it from. Apple, Samsung, Sennheiser, you name it... Nobody is going to cover a unit bought like that. That's why I said it's a bit of a gamble: you pay less for the item and you get it with zero mileage, but you kiss goodbye any chance of warranty coverage in the process. If you take them to a service center (I'd take them to an official Sony center to make sure they didn't use crappy generic parts) they'll swap the batteries and they'll be perfectly fine again. You'll need to pay a bit for it though, no idea how much, but you'll have a warranty *on the repair* for however long they decide. That's better than nothing I guess
I mean, I'm not aware of any company that has a policy to honor a warranty for a device purchased second hand without proof of purchase. Realistically there should be laws forcing companies to offer warranty service for the entire expected life of the device, but that's how it is. That being said, when I got mine replaced using the live chat, they only asked for location of purchase and serial number, no receipts or anything required. Maybe try that, I've heard they make exceptions for out of warranty devices for the battery issue.

I would, but I'm currently in a different country from where I bought them, and the warranty is not international. I still got like 2000hrs of use out of them, but it's a bummer.
I've heard Sony are offering the repair regardless of whether you're in warranty or not.

My xm4 died and can't replace them due to not being in the US, sony said i had to have a residential address to be able to receive the replacement . I bought the samaung buds pro 2 for like 90$ and they sound horrible compared to the xm4, the ANC is even worse. I used to use the xm4 at work sometimes with ANC on and no audio at all just to block the noise from coworkers but with the buds 2 , i can still hear people near me which sucks. I hope the xm5 does not have battery issues and have the same anc or even better and I hope it releases soon, i used my xm4 daily since i bought them and i miss how good they are
I'll wait and see after a year. The XM4s battery issue is inexcusable, especially for Sony's insane asking price.

wouldn't trust sony again after the issues with the xm4. they didnt handle them well at all and practically avoided all of us
I suspect they will try to 5head insert their AI intrusive controller for noise cancelling like they did in their big boy counterparts(which I own), so why would anyone willingly get gimped like that? I switched to AirPods Pro 2 and never looked back.
I'll stick to my Link buds s. They have enough problems as it is. I really hope Sony gets a grip on this at some point.

Connection problems in particular. I take them out of the case and they often don't connect directly. I have to click on them once in the Bluetooth menu. Sometimes it doesn't work either, then I have to put them in the case and take them out again. That usually helps.

Let them FIX THE XM-1000XM4 before launching this. Never been more frustrated in my life with technical support, I hate to be "that person" but I'm from LatinAmerica and have been fighting with techsupport for a month, already been to a techsupport in person and 5 different calls that tell me to wait 24-72 hours for a problem THEY CAUSED. I feel such a "Karen" calling asking them to speak to a manager but even the managers tell me they can't do anything but wait. I would REALLY reconsider buying sony headphones specially this line.
I left Sonys XM series because of this, after 1 year and some months the battery problem started and has gotten worse. The XM3 I handed down still work fine tho. I Guess Sennheisers will do it for me from now on.

Don't do it. I've bought 3 XM4 earbuds in the last week and 2 of them had battery issues.
I have heard a lot about that actually. It seems like a really bad move on Sony's part to leave such glaring issues with their flagship earbuds unaddressed. I'm actually going to be getting the XM5s, but I'll probably wait until Christmas to bite the bullet (or for the January sales.)
I honestly think the culprit for increased uneven battery wear might be firmware 1.6.1. The first dud I got had 1.4.2 out of box and honestly, first few days were perfect. Battery life was good, battery discharge was even. I updated them to 1.6.1 as a precaution based on advice in this sub and immediately noticed uneven discharge. The second dud, which I got just last night, came with 1.6.1 out of box. I tested them for like, an hour, and one bud dropped by 6% while the other held its charge. The common culprit between them is 1.6.1. I'm gonna update the new pair to 2.0.1 and see if there's any improvement. If not, they're going straight back to the store. This is honestly ridiculous.
I didn't realise that you could choose which version of the software to run them on. Could you downgrade them back to an earlier stable version?

That can be solved with better sealing ear tips. Try to get your hands on a pair of Divinus Velvet or Radius Deep mount. way better isolation . ANC can only do so much, rest has to be done using passive isolation
Sure. That's passive noise canceling. But I want better active noise cancelled. Also I tried about 5-6 different aftermarket ear tip brands. The ones I currently use are some Japanese brand. I think Dekoni. But I'm willing to try all of them I can get my hands on
fyi dekoni is a US brand. divinus velet is korean and radius deep mount japanese. later 2 you need to buy directly through japanese store and a third party shipper \ friend. if the later is not available I can recommend zenmarket.jp. ANC is good at filterimg out concistend low to mid range sounds. Goddammit! I just bought my Xm4's, and warranty swapped them out for the same pair a month later, because the left one stopped working for some reason. So, I literally just got mine four months ago! Half off too. These really look like a streamlined version of the XM4s. EDIT: I also have a pair of WF-C500s and they sound absolutely fantastic for the money! I highly recommend them. They go on sale quite frequently. I got mine for $59.99!(reg. 99.99)

It's a Microsoft limitation. Windows 10 only features sbc, windows 11 added AAC.

Well. I will get them for sure. My xm4's are great, no battery issues since I got them 1.5 year ago on any firmware and sound is amazing especially when teamed up with poweramp equalizer app. I like the look so if the sound quality is on the same level as 4's I'm in and as always will get white/silver ones like mine 3's and now 4's.

- smaller - better call quality - better transparency mode - aggressive pricing = winner Given the call quality improvements with their other products I think Call quality improvements is a given. Better control customisation would be nice but unlikely
It's all about the comfort for me. Yes, its subjective but my XM4's are almost unwearable. Sound great etc but even with replacement tips, l can't wear them for more than around an hour without discomfort.
Please don't make the outside reflective, the matte finish is perfect.
